Deer on the Move, Motorists Use Caution

$
0
0
HARRISBURG, PA - With deer becoming increasingly active, and daylight saving time soon to put more vehicles on the road during the hours when deer move most, the Pennsylvania Game Commission is advising motorists to slow down and stay alert.

“White-tailed deer are entering a period of increased activity and are crossing roads more frequently as a result,” said Game Commission Executive Director R. Matthew Hough. “While drivers should always remain alert and on the lookout for whitetails crossing roads, there is reason to pay particular attention while behind the wheel now and in the coming weeks.”

Deer become more active in autumn with the lead-up to their fall breeding season, commonly referred to as the “rut.” Around this time, many yearling bucks disperse from the areas in which they were born and travel, sometimes several dozen miles, to find new ranges. Meanwhile, adult bucks more often are cruising their home ranges in search of does, and they sometimes chase the does they encounter.

Add to this the fact autumn sees a number of people taking part in outdoor activities that might flush deer from forested areas or briar thickets, and that deer are more actively feeding to store energy for winter months, and it quickly becomes evident why motorists might be more likely to encounter deer on roads.

When daylight saving time ends Nov. 6, there also will be increased vehicular traffic between dusk and dawn – the peak hours for deer activity.

Drivers can reduce their chances of collisions with deer by staying alert and better understanding deer behavior. Motorists are urged to pay particular attention while driving on stretches marked with “Deer Crossing” signs.

Learn what to do if you have a deer-vehicle collision.

Tips for motorists
  • Don’t count on deer whistles or deer fences to deter deer from crossing roads in front of you. Stay alert.
  • Watch for the reflection of deer eyes and for deer silhouettes on the shoulder of the road. If anything looks slightly suspicious, slow down.
  • Slow down in areas known to have a large deer population; where deer-crossing signs are posted; places where deer commonly cross roads; areas where roads divide agricultural fields from woods; and whenever in forested areas between dusk and dawn.
  • Deer do unpredictable things. Sometimes they stop in the middle of the road when crossing. Sometimes they cross and quickly re-cross back from where they came. Sometimes they move toward an approaching vehicle. Assume nothing. Slow down; blow your horn to urge the deer to leave the road. Stop if the deer stays on the road; don’t try to go around it.

Law Enforcement, PennDOT Focus on Seat-Belt Use, Impaired Driving as Holiday Travel Period Begins

$

0
The Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invite parents and caregivers to make this holiday season a safer one by taking advantage of free car seat checks across the state that will complement the nationwide Click It or Ticket “Operation Safe Holiday” enforcement effort occurring from November 20 through December 4.

Troopers and other department members certified as Child Passenger Safety Technicians will conduct no-cost car seat fittings, at various locations from November 14 through November 27, no appointment necessary. Car seats will be checked for suitability, and participants will receive instruction on proper installation and child restraint. For a complete list of child passenger
seat fitting stations, please visit www.psp.pa.gov.

“Seat-belts and child passenger safety seats save lives when used properly,” said Major Edward Hoke, Director, Pennsylvania State Police Bureau of Patrol.  “Troopers will be issuing citations for seat-belt and child seat violations as part of the enforcement effort, but other focuses of ‘Operation Safe
Holiday’ are education and prevention.”

Under Pennsylvania law, children under the age of four must be properly restrained in an approved child safety seat. A new provision, signed into law this summer, mandates that children under two-years-old be secured in a rear-facing car seat. Children from age four to age eight must use an
appropriate booster seat.

Children ages eight to 18 must wear a seat-belt when riding anywhere in a  vehicle and all drivers and front-seat passengers 18-years-old and older are required to buckle up.

“Part of PennDOT’s mission is to educate the public on safety concerns and encourage them to do the right thing to protect themselves and their families, PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said. “This holiday season we’ll work with law enforcement to urge travelers to always buckle up and never drive impaired by drugs or alcohol.”

During enforcement operations, law enforcement will conduct seat belt and impaired driving enforcement simultaneously because unbelted and impaired driving crashes are shown to be significant contributors to traffic injuries and deaths, especially during nighttime hours

According to PennDOT data, during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period in 2015, including the weekend before and after the holiday as well as the day itself, there were 4,029 crashes and 45 fatalities in those crashes statewide.

The Christmas and New Year’s travel periods, including the weekend before Christmas, New Year’s and the weekend after, saw 4,985 crashes and 46 fatalities.

Additionally, during the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s holidays last year, 1,209 of the statewide crashes involved a driver impaired by drugs or alcohol, with 38 fatalities in those crashes. In that same period, there were 1,076 crashes with unbuckled occupants, with 48 fatalities in those
crashes.

Officials also encouraged travelers to use the SaferRide app. The app, developed in 2014 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in an effort to curb drunk driving, is available for free download on Android and Apple devices and is a great option to facilitate a safe ride home after
you’ve been drinking. Once the app is downloaded, you can use it to call a taxi or a friend by identifying your location so you can be picked up.

The holiday seat-belt and DUI enforcement are funded by part of PennDOT’s statewide distribution of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration enforcement monies this federal fiscal year. For more information on PennDOT’s highway safety efforts visit, www.penndot.gov/safety.

The public can join the discussion using the hashtag #PASafeHoliday.

Brantley Gilbert Kicks Off Tour in Reading

$
0
0
Quietly selling back-to-back platinum with Halfway To Heaven and Just As I Am,Jefferson, Georgia’s Brantley Gilbert became a different kind of heavy metal force. Not seeking attention, but going straight to the heart of his audience, he tapped into the outlier, the roughneck, the downhome and the downtrodden by rocking his country hard and writing songs torn straight from their lives – making him the word-of-mouth favorite among people who don’t care what you call it, just that you bring it every time.
“People want to rock, they want to party, but they want the songs to be about their lives, and all I’ve ever done is write my life and take it on the road,” says the CMA Song of the Year nominee. “I come from the same kind of place our fans do, and there’s a lot of people just like me and my guys out there – and they show up because they know we’re gonna put it down.”

Starting Feb 2 in Reading, PA., the man with 6 #1s including Jason Aldean’s seminal “Dirt Road Anthem” and “My Kind of Party” picks up where he left off with two sold-out months-in-advance shows at Colorado’s iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater with his Devil Don’t Sleep Tour. Since last year’s Blackout arena tour played to unprecedented numbers across the heart of the rust belt, the true Midwest and the South in the dead of winter and his summer Take It Outside amphitheater tour saw the BG Nation turn out night after night.

“We try to take all the songs even further live,” says the man whose music includes the life-affirming, dignity-driven “One Hell of an Amen,” the beneath the surface love song “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” and the influence-embracing “Country Must Be Country Wide” in a far-ranging repertoire. “Because those folks who love the records, we know they’re gonna want it to hit between the eyes when come out to the show, and we wanna give’em the night of the year every time we take that stage.”

That fierce need to push his songs beyond the limit is what’s made the man who’s not afraid to stand up for what he believes in a force on the touring circuit – and it’s what’s going to make Gilbert’s Devil Don’t Sleep 2017 Tour push the limits of what a country show is all about with his unique blend of hard rock, classic song craft and dashes of church music and hip-hop thrown in.

“Headlining shows in arenas gives you a lot of room to rock,” admits the man who won 2013’s Academy of Country Music’s Top New Male and 2014’s American Music Award for Favorite Album – Country for his Just As I Am. “The rooms are big enough, the energy really gets going. They push us, we feed them and the whole thing gets louder and louder til it feels like the roof’s gonna come off. But they listen, the people who come like when we strip it back, and you can hear’em sing. So after last year’s Blackout, this year’s Devil Don’t Sleep is gonna be that much better.”

Named for the album Gilbert will be dropping in early 2017, his latest tour will be an intense night of music, graphics and songs ranging from Hank Junior to his own signature kind of post-Outlaw country. Joining him for the tour will be Tucker Beathard, currently closing in on #1 with his debut “Rock On,” and indie breakout Luke Combs, climbing the charts with “Hurricane”.

And in honor of Veteran’s Day – and Gilbert’s ongoing commitment to America’s veterans – he will donate one dollar from every ticket sold through the BGNation pre-sale to the Disabled Veterans of America (www.dav.org). In addition, ALL ticketing-information and links can be found at BrantleyGilbert.com, as well as through local outlets.
