Man Facing Firearms Charges

ASHLAND —  According to Ashland Police, Timothy J. Stephens, of 1116 Brock St., was charged with one felony count of persons not to possess, transfer or use firearms and three misdemeanor counts of prohibited offensive weapons.

Police said on August 24, 2016 officers were called by Officer Robert Yotko of the Schuylkill County Adult Probation office asking for assistance for him and Officer Becky Bracey at Stephens' residence.

At the scene, police said the probation officers handed over a green and black case containing a .22LR RMJ revolver and said they were at the home to conduct a check on Stephens and saw .22 caliber ammunition in the living room.

The probation officers said when they asked Stephens if there were any weapons in the house, he told them that he had a handgun in a case behind a sofa in the living room. The case was pulled from behind the couch by the officers where they found the weapon inside.

Police said the weapon was assembled but had no ammunition in the cylinder, but there was a box of ammunition inside the case with the revolver.

During a search of the home, police said probation officers also found prohibited weapons in the form of a medieval-style mace weapon with a handle, chain and ball with protruding spikes as well as a PR-24 style police baton.

Stephens was read his rights and when questioned said he just had the mace and baton but another man had given him the revolver to hold for him.

The charges were filed October 27, 2016 with Magisterial District Judge Christina Hale.

Police said they learned that Stephens has a 2007 conviction for robbery that prohibits him from possessing a firearm.

The founder of Mrs. T's Pieorogies, Ted Twardzik Sr. passed away on Wednesday.

The company issued the following statement on Thursday.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our founder Ted Twardzik, Sr. We honor his legacy here at Mrs. T’s Pierogies and his impact in Shenandoah and the surrounding communities. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.

According to the company's web site, Ted Twardzik started the company in 1952. Twardzik's mother Mary was known for making the best homemade pierogies in Shenandoah. After returning from college with a degree in business, he had a vision: why not sell his Mom’s pierogies in stores, so more people could enjoy her amazing pierogies? In 1952, he did just that.

Schuylkill Officials Comment on Trump Election

This week's election of Donald Trump and the pros and cons of what followed truly made this week one of the most historic moments for our country.

The election though hit close to home for Schuylkill County where we seen large turnouts with some polling centers seeing turnouts near 75%.

While the popular vote for Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton was close overall for the nation, but Trump defeated Clinton in a landslide within Schuylkill County.  The Wall Street Journal even reported that Donald Trump received 3 times the amount of votes in this election compared to Mitt Romney in 2012.

The coal region of Pennsylvania has been said to have helped in Trump's victory.

We reached out to some of our local officials to give their take on President Elect Donald Trump's victory.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brock Stein, Chairman of the Schuylkill County Republican Committee
Schuylkill County had tremendous voter turnout, and President-elect Trump won in every precinct in the County. The Schuylkill County Republican Committee wishes President-elect Trump the very best and looks forward to maintaining the momentum this election has created.

George Halcovage, Schuylkill County Commissioner
In recent years, the American working class had been too long ignored and disenfranchised. Last night was a resounding victory for the working class and our Schuylkill County values. It was a beautiful example of democracy in action. The voice of the people was heard. Donald Trump spoke to all of us who have felt that real changes were needed in Washington, DC. Jobs, healthcare, safety and trustworthiness are extremely important. We that serve in government are public servants and need to respect the voice of all those we represent. For those of you who had hoped for a different outcome, I understand and respect your disappointment. However, it is now time for us to heal and unite. We show that bipartisanship on a local basis and we now need to show that it can be done nationally as well. Congratulations, President-Elect Trump! Let's Make America Great Again and God Bless America!

Frank Staudenmeier, Schuylkill County Commissioner
“This was obviously a historic election---one for the ages---I am very pleased with the results & that Donald Trump is our President------I strongly believe that his first priority is to reach out to “all” the people to begin to unify this great country of ours”

Christine Holman, Schuylkill County District Attorney
This had to be the most divisive election in modern history and I am proud to be a part of his obtaining the electoral votes for Pennsylvania.

I take Trump’s slogan “make America great again” to heart and am encouraged and excited about the future –it won’t just be business or should I say, “politics” as usual.

Founder of Mrs. T's Pierogies Remembered

Shenandoah, Pa., November 11, 2016 – Theodore F. “Ted” Twardzik, Sr., founder of Mrs. T’s® Pierogies, passed away on Thursday, November 10, 2016, with his loving family by his side. He was 89.
Mr. Twardzik founded the company that bears his mother’s name in 1952, upon returning home from New York City, where he worked as a staff accountant at Arthur Anderson & Company. He was inspired by the long lines of people at church fairs clamoring to buy his mother’s homemade pierogies – and the possibility that these long lines might translate to grocery stores as well. And they did.

With five women sitting around his mother’s kitchen making pierogies and selling them to local stores, he knew he was on to something. It wasn’t long before he had worn out his welcome in that kitchen and decided to move production to the company’s current location in Shenandoah, Pa.

With his pierogies, Mr. Twardzik is credited with bringing a completely new category to the frozen food aisle and is considered a pioneer in the frozen food industry, inventing and developing Mrs. T’s proprietary pierogy-making equipment as well.

Mr. Twardzik took great pride that his original idea, vision and hard work led to the first national brand of frozen pierogies. Today, Mrs. T’s Pierogies is Shenandoah’s largest employer with more than 240 associates. An even greater joy to him was the impact Mrs. T’s had on providing jobs and income to hundreds of employees and their families in the community over the years. Mr. Twardzik never forgot his hometown of Shenandoah and the people who helped him realize his dream.

“Today my family lost a husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Our community lost a tireless advocate for its citizens, and the industry lost a pioneer. We will miss his indomitable spirit, unique sense of humor and tireless work ethic,” said Tom Twardzik, son of Mr. Twardzik and current president of Mrs. T’s Pierogies. “We are humbled to know that his legacy will live on every day in the countless people he touched and the millions of Americans who love Mrs. T’s Pierogies.”

Born on September 7, 1927 to parents Frank and Mary (Benik) Twardzik of Shenandoah, Mr. Twardzik was one of six children. He graduated from Mahanoy Township High School in 1945 and went on to attend the University of Notre Dame. His time in South

Bend, In. was interrupted to serve honorably in the U.S. Army, where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant in the 83rd Mechanized Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron.

After leaving the service, Mr. Twardzik returned to Notre Dame, graduating with honors in 1951. At Notre Dame he was active in the Glee Club where he served as the group’s treasurer; and was also part of the club’s two appearances on CBS-TV’s Toast of the Town, hosted by Ed Sullivan.

His first job was at Arthur Anderson & Company in New York City, one of the “Big Eight” accounting firms of its time. He left soon after to pursue his entrepreneurial dream of bringing his mother’s pierogies to the masses.

Even after retirement, Mr. Twardzik’s passion for business did not wane. In 2000, he co-founded Lee’s Oriental Gourmet Foods, which is still operating today in Shenandoah, employing 30 people.

Mr. Twardzik and wife Jean supported a multitude of local and national charities. They were members of the Edward Frederick Sorin Society Founder’s Circle at Notre Dame, created the Twardzik Family General Library Endowment and supported a Distinguished Library Collection in Polish Studies. The Twardziks were also supporters of Hillsdale College and are President’s Club Life Members. They created the Twardzik Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Endowment, which funds the Twardzik Business Seminar Scholarship and the Twardzik Free Enterprise Tradition Award Scholarship. The couple donated the building on South Main Street in Shenandoah that now houses the Greater Shenandoah Area Historical Society. Mr. Twardzik was a Pace Setter of the Schuylkill United Way, continuing his father Frank’s charter efforts with the Schuylkill County Society for Crippled Children.

Mr. Twardzik is survived by his beloved wife of 60 wonderful years, Jean; his three sons, Ted Jr., Tim, and Tom; five grandsons; and loved nieces and nephews.
