Ashland Memorials Added to National Register of Historic Places

Earlier this month, the Borough of Ashland received notice by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission that the Mothers’ Memorial has been added to the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of Interior - National Park Service.

According to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and National Park Service:

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of our Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. It's authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources.

Adam J. Bernodin III, Ashland Area Historic Preservation Society Member, Historical Marker Nominator; and Raymond Jones Ashland Borough Manager were officially contacted by April Frantz, National Register Reviewer of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission about the Mothers’ Memorial, Hoffman Memorial, and Veteran’s Memorial, making the list on the week for September 18, 2020.

The Mothers’ Memorial, the Hoffman Memorial, and the Veterans’ Memorial are three small, landscaped memorial parks connected by the associated Hoffman Boulevard (Pennsylvania State Route 61) and a stretch of Market Street in the Borough of Ashland that will be listed by the National Park Service.

The National Register of Historic Places Nomination Form was prepared in joined efforts with Bernodin and Margret Newman. Margret Newman was a selected consultant hired on a grant by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

The Ashland Boys’ Association Pennsylvania State Historical was dedicated on August 31, 2013.

According to Bernodin, “The Ashland Boys’ Association historical marker honors all current and former residents that faithfully came home to a proud coal mining town. The sentimental impact of this homecoming was felt throughout Pennsylvania and the Industrial United States when they erected the Mothers’ Memorial.”

Bernodin also said, “the National Register of Historic Places honors the Mothers’ Memorial in Social History in the United States. Whistler’s Mother’s was the quintessential imagine of motherhood of the United States during that time when the WPA Mothers’ Memorial was erected during the Great Depression and still today the only one of its kind statue in the world honoring all mothers.”

“The Ashland Boys’ Association made history choosing the subject on canvass of the bronze replica of the American iconic painting of Arrangement and Grey and Black No. 1, commonly known as Whistler’s Mother.”

The Ashland Boys’ Association, Dr. John L. Hoffman, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Work Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression with the stone masonry stonework around the Mothers’ Memorial, Hoffman Boulevard Islands, Hoffman Memorial site, and around stonework around the field piece of the Veterans’ Memorial are all sentimentally connected.

This was all based on the region's coal mining anthracite heritage with the current and former residents of the Borough of Ashland.

The Mothers’ Memorial is the symbol of the very foundation of the Ashland Boys’ Association. The meaning of the Ashland Boys’ Association was to come on home and the work home evoked thoughts of their mothers.

The Ashland Boys’ Association and the Mothers’ Memorial will now be sentimentally shining forever as a model community as the symbol of United States Social History honoring all mothers, family, and friends!

A company will bring new life to the former Gitman's Shirt Factory in Ashland.

In June, Gitman Bros. / Tom James Company announced they would be closing their Ashland Facility in the 2200 Block of Centre Street in August/Early September. 2020.  The closure would leave almost 100 people without a job.

Starting this week, a new company has moved in and will give the facility new life and keep jobs in the borough.

Brigade Manufacturing Inc., of Tullahome, Tennesse has taken over the facility.  The company makes clothing for the U.S. Armed Forces as well as for the United State Postal Service.  The Ashland location will focus on shirts for the Postal Service for now.

Gitmans employees had to reapply with over half of the former employees submitting applications and keeping their jobs.

A deal between Gitman and Brigade reportedly happened after Representative Dan Meuser seen a newspaper article on the Ashland Shirt Factory closing and reached out to Brigade's board of directors Vice Chairman Richard J. Holcombe which led to the company's interest in the building.

Brigade's employee are expected to begin production at the facility this week.

Seven municipalities in Schuylkill County received grants totaling $600,000 from the 2020 Community Conservation Partnerships Program for eight projects that will go towards making improvements for various parks, according to Senator David G. Argall, Representative Mike Tobash, Representative Jerry Knowles, and Representative Neal Goodman.
“I am thankful that these projects received these well-deserved grants,” said Argall. “These projects will be a great benefit for communities across Schuylkill County.”

“I’m glad to see the conservation grants will be going to good use in Frailey and Porter Townships,” said Tobash. “In these difficult times, outdoor recreation is important for our citizens, and the much-needed upgrades for Good Spring Park and Reinerton Playground will be good for the communities.”

“This is great news for our community,” said Knowles. “Grants like this help support recreation and conservation opportunities, which help make the 124th Legislative District a better place to live, work and play. In addition, it creates jobs for the area. These grants show a tremendous example of what can be accomplished when community and state government leaders work together.”

“Now, more than ever, people are looking to spend more time in the great outdoors. These grants will help them do just that,” said Goodman.

East Union Township received $50,000 to rehabilitate American Legion Park. This project will include the construction of a pedestrian walkway and the installation of new play equipment.

Frailey Township received $200,000 for the development of the Good Spring Park and Trail. This project will include the construction of 1.3 miles of trail, parking lot, and an observation area.

Porter Township received $100,000 for the rehabilitation of Reinerton Playground. This project will include the construction of pedestrian walkways as well as the installation of new playground equipment.

Reilly Township received $70,000 for the development of Memorial Park. This project will include the construction of a gazebo as well as a parking area and pedestrian walkways.

Rush Township received $70,000 for the further development of two parks: Grier City Park and Miller Park. Both projects will include the construction of a pavilion as well as stormwater management measures.

Saint Clair Borough will receive $50,000 for the rehabilitation of their little league field. This project will include the renovation of the ballfield and pedestrian walkways as well as the installation of fencing.

West Penn Township will receive $60,000 for the further development of J.E. Morgan Park. This project will include the construction of comfort stations, a pavilion, shade structures, and utilities.
