Law enforcement raided a home in Minersville Wednesday morning which led to the finding of methamphetamine and one arrest.

According to Minersville Police Patrolman Jeffrey Bowers, on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2020, around 8:00am, a search warrant was executed at 438 New Castle Street, Minersville, and on a dark gray 2005 Chevrolet sedan.  Both are owned by Darrin Wayne Lynch, 51, also known as "the Grinch".

Lynch was found in the basement of the home where law enforcement also found $445.00 in currency, two business cards identifying Lynch's drug trafficking business, a digital scale, and other items.

A search of Lynch's vehicle led to the find of a Morton Salt container with a false bottom which contained a bag containing a crystalized substance, 17 glassine baggies containing a crystalized substance weighing approximately 23.3 grams, a ledger/owe sheet, multiple phones and tables, and other items.

A field test of the crystalized substance tested positive for methamphetamine.

Due to the findings, it lead police to believe Lynch is involved in drug trafficking from the home and charged him with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, and criminal use of a communication facility.

Lynch was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Kilker who set back at $25,000 straight cash bail and remanded to Schuylkill County Prison

Geisinger Offers Free Telephone Assessments for Breast Cancer Risk

$

Geisinger is making high-risk breast cancer screenings more convenient for the community by offering assessments through a phone call during a free, all-day event on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Those who register for the event will have a one-on-one breast cancer screening call with a Geisinger provider to discuss their individual risk factors, health options and follow-up care, if needed.

The event is open to all women ages 18 and older who are concerned about their breast health. During the 15-minute phone appointments, a member of the Geisinger care team will complete an assessment with the participants to determine their level of risk for breast cancer.

“Routine breast cancer screenings are important for all women, but even more so for those at higher-than-average risk,” said Dr. Jacqueline Oxenberg, Geisinger surgical oncologist. “While we’re all dealing with the uncertainty of COVID-19, cancer occurrence is not stopping, and neither should cancer screenings and regular health checks. This event is making it easier for our community to continue these important health discussions. While these telephone screenings are a valuable piece of the breast health puzzle, they do not replace yearly mammograms.”

After the phone call with the Geisinger team, participants will receive information on their results and additional resources or follow-up actions, if necessary. The care team can set up an appointment for an in-person evaluation if the clinician has determined there’s a risk.

Geisinger offers a multidisciplinary team of specialists — including oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, geneticists, integrative medicine specialists and behavioral health counselors — to care for patients with breast cancer.

The Gilberton Borough Council meeting on Wednesday evening led to a new Mayor and other items after the passing of their previous Mayor.

On August 27th, 2020, Gilberton's Mayor Mary Lou Hannon passed away after a short bout with cancer.

The borough was left without a leader and by law, the council had 30 days to appoint a new one.

On Thursday evening, the Council met for their monthly meeting and during new business, determined who their next Mayor will be.

Council President Dan Malloy opened the floor and asked for anyone who was interested.  Councilman Bill Hannon immediately motioned for Council Vice President Michael Van Allen to take the job and  Councilman Lloyd George seconded the motion.

Gilberton Fire Chief Frank Jackowiak's name was almost mentioned and received a motion from Mark Kiersey, but the motion did not receive a second.

The council continue and offered a vote to all council members on whether to make Van Allen the new Mayor, all members voted for Van Allen, with the new Mayor abstaining from the vote.

Van Allen said later after the meeting, "We are deeply saddened by the death of Mayor Mary Lou Hannon.  I'm honored that the borough council felt that I could hold this position and I will try to uphold her [Hannon's] standards and keep paving the path forward the way she has through the years."

Without a judge present, Van Allen's swearing in would be held at a later date.

After the vote, Borough Solicitor Paul Domalakes offered a resolution to the Council to consider to honor the passing of Mayor Hannon.  The resolution also recognized December 5th, Hannon's birthday, as Mayor Lou Hannon Day in the borough.

All council members agreed to move forward with the resolution which read:

WHEREAS, Mary Lou Hannon served as the duly elected Mayor of the Borough of Gilberton, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania for over twenty years; and

WHEREAS, Council is desirous of expressing their appreciation for the dedicated, tireless and determined service of Mary Lou Hannon and her unswerving devotion to the betterment of the Borough of Gilberton and its citizens therein; and

WHEREAS, the entire Borough is saddened by the untimely death of Mayor Mary Lou Hannon on August 27th, 2020;

NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved this 24th of September 2020, the Gilberton Borough Council recognizes and honors the life and service of Mary Lou Hannon to the Borough of Gilberton and hereby declares the 4th of December, 2020, Mary Lou Hannon Day.

The resolution was unanimously agreed upon.

The next New Business was to advertise to fill Van Allen's vacant council seat.

Next, Councilman Bill Hannon, and Mary Lou's husband, handed a letter to President Malloy submitting his resignation as council member as of the end of the meeting.  The remaining council members "regretfully accepted".

Council Member Mark Kiersey offered and accepted the Vice President position.

Council then returned to the issue of empty council seats, since now that have two open seats.  Council Member Lloyd George motioned to appoint Christine Antalosky and Barry Brassington to the empty seats.

The motion was carried both accepted the positions.

Both Antalosky and Brassington will be sworn in at a later date.

A man has been locked up in Schuylkill County Prison after going on a joy ride while naked and crashing into a fire company early Friday in Shenandoah Heights.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, on Friday, September 25th, 2020, around 6:00am, troopers received a report of a naked male walking on Virginia Avenue in Shenandoah Heights, West Mahanoy Township.

While a State Trooper approached Virginia Avenue, a white SUV was seen crossing over Swatara Road from Virginia Avenue without stopping at a posted stop sign.

The SUV drove over the Heights Fire Company parking lot and impacted the firehouse's building coming to a rest just inside the building.

When the trooper approached, a naked male crawled from the driver's seat into the back of the vehicle.

While the trooper detained the naked male, a female approached and stated the vehicle in question was her vehicle and the male just stole it from the front of her home.

She told police that the naked male had entered her vehicle and drove forward striking a parked vehicle, then drove away almost striking her boyfriend.

A further investigation revealed that the naked male entered a home, around 5:30am, on Swatara Avenue before stealing the vehicle.  The owner of the home was able to make the naked male leave.

As a result of the incident, Damian Hester, 18, of Shenandoah Heights, was charged with criminal trespass, vehicle theft, DUI, recklessly endangering other person, indecent exposure, criminal mischief, and multiple traffic violations.

Hester was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Kilker and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison unable to post $50,000 straight cash bail.
