The Northeast PA Manufacturers & Employers Council and Pennsylvania College of Technology announced the first recipients of the YES Certificate Program Scholarship for the 2020-21 academic year.
Six students from six school districts have earned the award. All have been certified through the YES Program and have chosen to further their education at Penn College. The students and their school districts are:

  • Madeline M. Bordner, Williams Valley;
  • Ryan D. Evert, North Schuylkill;
  • Karson J. Felty, Pine Grove Area;
  • Matt J. Siluk, Blue Mountain;
  • Marcus A. Toot, Pittston Area;
  • Ethan R. Wagner, Minersville Area.
Each of the students will receive a $2,000 renewable scholarship. If they choose to pursue a bachelor’s degree, they will be eligible for up to $8,000. Through this opportunity, students will enter the workforce as well-rounded employees, having received essential skills training through YES and advanced technical knowledge in their field of study during their time on campus.

“The Council applauds the accomplishments of these six students and would like to congratulate them on earning this scholarship,” said Darlene J. Robbins, MAEC president. “Through the joint efforts of both the Council and Penn College, they will undoubtedly be leaders in the workforce of the future.”

“We are thrilled to offer this scholarship opportunity to students who successfully complete the YES Program,” said Carolyn R. Strickland, vice president for enrollment management and associate provost at Penn College. “To earn this credential, students must demonstrate persistence, a strong work ethic and a high level of commitment – qualities that are also exhibited by Penn College graduates. YES Program graduates will make ideal ‘tomorrow makers.’ We are especially excited to welcome this first cohort of scholarship recipients to our Penn College community.”

YES (Your Employability Skills), which is administered by the Council, is a 120-hour, one-credit, year-round elective course that addresses the shortfall of basic skills that employers say they are seeing in many job applicants. The course covers 38 modules in all, including communication, team building, interview/resume/cover letter writing, completing a job application, personal finance, conflict resolution and time management.

In order to earn a certification and become a graduate of the program, students must achieve passing scores on both the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) and the Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test, demonstrate an attendance rate of 95% or better, pass a six-panel drug screen, complete the 120 hours of curriculum, and earn their high school diploma.

Since the program began in 2006, more than 7,500 students have enrolled in the program, with 2,633 earning their industry-recognized credential.

As an additional benefit to the first scholarship recipients, Penn College announced that, in future graduating classes, YES students will be able to stack their scholarship with a new opportunity through the college that offers support to completers of career and technical education programs.

To be eligible for the Career & Technical Education Student Scholarship, an applicant must be a Pennsylvania resident, be enrolled full time, have completed a minimum of one year (or 360 hours) in a Pennsylvania Department of Education-approved career and technical education program, earn a 2.0 cumulative GPA for all CTE-completed coursework, submit a final official CTC/CTE transcript, and submit the Penn College Scholarship Application.

Like the YES Certificate Program Scholarship, this opportunity offers a $2,000 renewable scholarship for up to four years for baccalaureate students and two years for associate degree students. To renew, all recipients must remain enrolled full time and maintain a GPA of at least 2.5.

YES graduates who were also enrolled in a career and technical education program will be eligible to earn up to $16,000 through the two awards.

For more information on the YES Program, visit the Council’s website at www.nepamaec.com or call 570-622-0940.

New Sanitizing Technology Introduced at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill

$

A new ultraviolet light technology has been introduced into the Environmental Services (EVS) Department at Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Schuylkill.

The benefit promises to be great for patients and staff alike and it uses no chemicals, but it can sanitize a hospital or treatment room in as little as 15 minutes.

Called SURFACIDE Total Room Disinfection, the equipment delivers ultraviolet (UV)-C energy in a highly effective manner. A triple emitter configuration allows the system to ensure full eradication of any pathogens (germs) on surfaces or in the air. There are no known bacteria or viruses that can survive UV-C energy technology including the coronavirus and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It is used in patient rooms and other areas of the hospital after regular cleaning and sanitizing has been completed.

“This technology provides an extra measure of protection for patients and staff,” says William “Bill” Reppy, President, LVH–Schuylkill. “We are very fortunate to have this technology here and now in Schuylkill County. In fact, when you enter our facilities, you can be assured that we do not just look clean, we are clean.”

LVH–Schuylkill is the only hospital in Schuylkill County using the SURFACIDE technology.

Other Lehigh Valley Health Network facilities also use ultraviolet light technology to supplement their cleaning and sterilization practices.

“At a time when everyone is so rightly concerned about germs and proper sanitation, it is absolutely essential that we are able to make this technology available here at our Pottsville facilities,” notes Terry Wagner, Director of EVS. “Infection prevention is the reality of clean.”

The unit at LVH–Schuylkill uses a system equipped with three emitters or towers. The SURFACIDE system is able to cover more surface area than single emitters during a single cycle. This ability to cover more surface area allows for safer, more efficient cleaning of patient rooms, bathrooms, ORs and any other areas within the hospital that require supplemental disinfection. With SURFACIDE’s three emitters operating during the same disinfection cycle, more surfaces are exposed, leaving behind a safer environment.

LVH–Schuylkill will use the technology in patient rooms, operating suites, exam rooms, restrooms and other areas.

Employees began using the ultraviolet technology in early July

A man is facing charges after firing a gun during an argument in Frackville on Sunday.

According to Frackville Police Chief Rick Bell, on Sunday August 30, 2020 around 7:00pm, the Frackville Police were dispatched to a home in the 300 block of N. Center St. for a domestic disturbance where a shot from a handgun was fired.

Police departments from Butler Township, Shenandoah, and Mahanoy City responded to the scene to assist.

After police arrived and investigated, evidence was found confirming that a single shot from a gun was fired. Officers also recovered a firearm at the scene.

Steven Davis, 41, of Frackville was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, possessing instruments of a crime, and disorderly conduct.

Davis was arraigned by on-call Magisterial District Judge Rossi and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison on $75,000 cash bail.

Davis posted bail on Tuesday, September 1st, 2020.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 9th, 2020 before Judge Rossi.

Minersville Man Charged for Sexual Assault of Two Children

A Minersville man was locked up on Tuesday for the sexual assault of two children.

On Tuesday, September 1st, 2020, Troy Troup Jr., 28, of Minersville was taken into custody and charged with 2 counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, 2 counts of aggravated indecent assault of a child, 2 counts of indecent assault, 2 counts of corruption of minors, and one count of indecent exposure.

According to Minersville Police Patrolman Jeffrey Bowers, the charges come after an investigation when Troup's girlfriend reported that she believed he was possibly sexually assaulting her two daughters, ages 12 and 9.

An interview of Troup by Minersville Police and Schuylkill Children and Youth offered no plausible explanation as to why the children would make the allegations against him.

On August 27th, 2020, the children were interviewed by the UPMC Children's Resource Center in Harrisburg, where both girls were interviewed and assessed individually.

The children described to investigators that Troup forced the girls into various sexual acts with him as well as exposing himself in front of them at their home on Delaware Avenue, Minersville.

Based on the facts presented, Minersville Police believe that Troup conducted a pattern of sexually predatory behavior including sexual assaults on both girls.

Troup was taken into custody on Tuesday, and arraigned before Magisterial District Judge David Plachko who locked him up in Schuylkill County Prison on $150,000 cash bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 8th, 2020 before Magisterial District Judge Plachko.

City of Pottsville Requests Compensation of Taxes from Schuylkill County

$
0
0

During the work session of the Schuylkill County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday, the City of Pottsville requested funds from the County that was owed to them and collected from tax collection.

During the public portion of the meeting, City Council Member and Director of Accounts and Finance, Mark Atkinson, attended the meeting via Zoom/Phone to find out why the money was being withheld.

Atkinson had stated that a meeting occurred in March between the City and County where the County disputed what they owed to the city over a discrepancy.  Atkinson also stated that by law, the only time a discrepancy can be reported on an election year is prior to March 15th, which he said did not occur.

Atkinson noted that the County is withholding over $46,000 that is owed to the city.

Commissioner Hess asked for an answer to Atkinson's request, to which Councilman Atkinson said he would be requesting a court resolution along with the other City Council members to resolve the matter and asked for answer today.

Schuylkill County Treasurer Linda Marchalk commented, stating that her office processed the request and had a contract through December 31st, 2019 but had not received an updated contract.

Marchalk stated that due to not having an updated contract, Finance the Controller's Office would not authorize the checks.

Marchalk also stated that her office continues to receive monthly bills but until she receives an updated contract, those checks would not be authorized.

She also elaborated that the County pays the city of Pottsville $85,000 to collect 9,000 tax bills and pays 1/3rd of the employees salary and health benefits.

She also stated her office pays 66 other tax collectors totaling $285,000

Marchalk further added that the City failed to provide a job description of the staff in terms of what they do.  She stated that the employees also collect other city bills.

"I don't think it's proper and adequate that they are charging us 1/3rd because they are doing more than collecting county real estate taxes." Marchalk said.

After Marchalk spoke, Atkinson again disputed that the funds could not be withheld because of the State Law.

At this point, Commissioner Hess interjected and said this should be a discussion outside of the meeting and requested that a separate meeting be held as soon as possible between both sides in order to resolve the issue.

Additional notes from Wednesday morning's meeting will be posted later.

Wolf Administration Lifts Ban on Fan Attendance to High School/Youth Sporting Events

$

On Wednesday, Governor Wolf announced that the guidance has changed and will now allow a limited number of fans to attend high school/youth sporting events.

In early August, recommendations from the Wolf Administration did not allow fans at any indoor or outdoor sporting events.  While the guidance wasn't an order, the PIAA followed the Governor's recommendations.

On Wednesday, updates to the guidance were changed and will now allow 250 fans for outdoor events and 25 fan for indoor.

The new guidance states:

Professional sports organizations are permitted to practice or play outdoors with 250 or fewer people in attendance and indoors with 25 or fewer people in attendance, provided they follow orders issued by the Secretary of Health and recommendations issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other health or athletics-based organizations. Sports organizations are not required to submit a safety plan for approval to DOH if fewer than 250 people are present at an outdoor site or directly outside of the site.

Professional sports organizations that want to play or practice with more than 250 people at an outdoor site or directly outside of the site (or 25 people or more for indoor sites) must submit a plan to DOH for approval. The administration will not approve plans submitted to DOH which include spectators in or directly outside of the site or venue.

The guidance does not state if the 250 fan count includes players, coaches, and/or officials.

The ultimate decision will be decided by each district/organization.
