The hospital presented community representatives with two AED devices, one for the Police Department and one for the Fire Department.

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock can potentially stop an irregular heart beat (arrhythmia) and allow a normal rhythm to resume following sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). When used appropriately and properly, this device can mean the difference between life and death.

Mary Lou Hannon
– loving wife, nurturing mother, and endearing grandmother – passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her husband and children on Thursday, August 27th, 2020. She was taken from this world after a sudden and swift battle with cancer.

Mary Lou was born in Ashland, Pennsylvania to the late Joseph Biscoe, and Edith Biscoe. She was raised in the small town of Gilberton, alongside her nine brothers and sisters. From her earliest days as a child until her last days on this Earth, Mary Lou loved her hometown and the community she grew up in. She was the first female and longest serving mayor in Gilberton Borough history, but her dedication to and love for her community did not start or end with her career in politics. Mary Lou was also a lifelong member of the Gilberton Methodist Church, a former cheerleading coach and football booster club leader, as well as a nurse and caretaker to elderly throughout the community and local nursing homes.

She was a small town girl, who believed in staying true to her upbringing and never shying away from a challenge. She was loyal to friends, protective of family, courageously assertive, and full of conviction. She liked to recall a favorite quote: "You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life." Mary Lou believed that very few things could be compared to the importance of standing up for what you believe in.

Perhaps the one thing that Mary Lou held above everything else was her family. And she believed that her role as a wife and a

mother was to be the glue that held everyone together. That translated into a loving woman who insisted on a clean and organized household, well-cooked meals for her husband and children, family parties and events planned out in great detail, and an insistence on loyalty and protectiveness toward one another. May we, Mary Lou’s family, remember her strength as we learn to live and face the challenges of life without her guiding presence.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband of nearly forty-two years, William ("Bill") Hannon; her oldest son, William Hannon, Jr. ("BJ") and wife, Carla; her son Jonathan Hannon and wife, Andrea; her son Joshua Hannon; her daughter Cassandra and husband, Robert Fisher; and her extraordinary grandchildren: Sierra, Alyssa, Kyerra, and Declan Hannon; Alessandra Fisher; and Alex Brzoska.

A service will be held at the Gilberton Methodist Church on Wednesday, September 2nd, 2020. Friends and family are welcome to visit between 5pm and 9pm. There will be a short church service beginning at 5:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations for a scholarship fund in the memory of Mary Lou.

The family would like to thank David D. Jarrett Funeral Home for their gracious help during this difficult time. Please visit www.jarrettfuneralhome.com for more information.

Schuylkill County First Responders Recognized for Service and Honor Those Who Lost Their Lives

On Sunday, after not being able to hold the 2020 Volunteer Firefighters' Association Convention, Schuylkill County still figured out a way to recognize first responders and remember those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

On July 30th, the Schuylkill County Firefighters' Association  announced the cancellation of the 2020 Volunteer Firefighters' Association Convention due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The cancellation not only left the event's host, the Ringtown Valley Fire Company, with a loss of money due to expenses, but the fire service of Schuylkill County was not able to honor their LODD's (Line of Duty Deaths) with their annual service which has been a tradition for 65 years.

As the Volunteer Firefighters' Association President, David Sattizahn stated "Like always, the fire service of Schuylkill County overcomes every obstacle thrown at us and COVID-19 is just another one of those obstacles".

The fire association, Schuylkill County Police Association came up with the idea to incorporate a procession where everyone socially distanced, but also still hold a service and recognize first responders.

At 5:00pm Sunday, companies willing to participate were asked to meet at Martz Hall in Pottsville.

About 70 fire apparatus, ems, and police responded and filled the parking lot.

At 6:00pm, a special service was broadcast by Rev. Crawford and Msgr. William Glosser from the Schuylkill County Emergency Operations Center and was broadcast over a special operation channel and that was able to be listened to by all the apparatus via radio.

The procession honored the those from across the country, as well as within Schuylkill County,  who lost their lives while on duty.

Ringtown Valley then led a silent procession of the apparatus through Pottsville which included an archway on Centre Street and led to the Nativity BVM High School.

The apparatus rounded the school to the front, where Pastor Christ Rothharpt (Trinity Lutheran Church, Pottsville), Father Edward B. Connolly (Pastor Emeritus, of Girardville), Fr. Barnabas Shayo (St. Patrick's Church, Pottsville), Brad Harris (Envoy of the Pottsville Salvation Army), and Monsignor Edward J. O'Connor of Pottsville, blessed the apparatus after they passed by.

Special thanks were given to Firefighters' Association, the Schuylkill County Commissioners, the Ringtown Valley Fire and Rescue Co., Pottsville Fire Department, Pottsville Area School District, Schuylkill County Department of Public Safety, Schuylkill County EMS partners, Schuylkill County Police partners, and Schuylkill County Fire Chiefs Association, as well as Nativity BVM High School for helping organize the event.
