Schuylkill League, Superintendents Discuss Fan Attendance and Away Team Members

Earlier this week, the Governor's Administration Guidelines for high school sporting events during the COVID-19 pandemic was altered to allow up to 250 people at outdoor events and 25 for indoor.  The Schuylkill League has commented after a meeting on how the league will move forward.

The 250/25 rule for sporting events includes athletes/coaches/officials as part of their total count, which left the question, Who else gets to attend?

The Schuylkill League announced that committee members and the superintendents that operate within the league met to discuss the issue.

In a joint statement from the Schuylkill League and Superintendents, it was announced that away teams will have a limited number of athletes that can attend and that no "away fans" will be allowed to attend.

"The genesis of our decision is both student and health centered, primarily focusing on our students who participate in school sponsored activities.  It is the decision of both Schuylkill League Superintendents and the Schuylkill League Executive Committee that each away school will only be granted a set number of student athletes, coaches, and essential game workers.  All away fans will not be granted access."

Schuylkill League President, Dr. Steve Toth, commented further in regards to the decision to not allow "away" fans and to let each school district decide their other needs.

"Our league did not want to nor did we feel it was appropriate to dictate to each district. After discussion with our League, Superintendents asked to be part of a discussion.

What this does is give local control to schools and every superintendent supported having no away fans. This allows districts to identify their needs and wants at their home outdoor events." Toth commented.

Each school district will now make their own determination if they will allow homes fans as well as how many can attend.

The Schuylkill League statement also noted that each of the league's schools are working to provide live streaming of their events.

The first competition dates for fall high school sports are listed below:

Pastor Returns to Ministry After Sexual Abuse Allegations were Made in Shenandoah

This past week, a Pastor returned to ministry after sexual abuse allegations were made against him.
According to Diocese of Allentown, Father Robert J. Potts, Pastor of St. Ursula Church, Fountain Hill, has been returned to ministry after being cleared of all allegations following a 10-month inquiry conducted by independent investigators.

The allegation against Father Potts was received by the Washington, D.C., administrators of the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program, who then notified the Diocese.

On the day the Diocese was notified of the complaint, Bishop Alfred Schlert removed Father Potts from ministry and directed that law enforcement be notified. The Diocese had no knowledge of the complaint before being notified of it.

The person who made the allegation told the Compensation Fund Administrators that Father Potts sexually abused him in the 1980s and early 1990s, when Father Potts, now 83, was pastor of the former St. George Parish, Shenandoah.

The Office of the Schuylkill County District Attorney determined that the case would not be investigated because the Statute of Limitations had passed.

The Diocese then hired independent investigators who pursued all possible leads in the case and determined that Father Potts did not commit the acts that were alleged. The investigative firm, based outside the Diocese, employs retired F.B.I. agents who are trained investigators with decades of experience with the agency.

The Independent Review Board, a group of lay experts in abuse issues formed to review such cases, then considered all of the facts in the case and recommended unanimously that Father Potts be reinstated. Bishop Schlert accepted the recommendation.

Governor Wolf Announces Restaurants May Increase Indoor Occupancy to 50 Percent

On Tuesday, Governor Tom Wolf announced that restaurants may increase indoor occupancy to 50 percent starting September 21.

To ensure that these businesses operate safely as Pennsylvania continues to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, and to instill customers and employees with confidence knowing that they can dine safely, restaurants will commit to strictly complying to all public health safety guidelines and orders through a self-certification process.

“While our aggressive and appropriate mitigation efforts have kept case counts low, we must continue to take important steps to protect public health and safety as we head into the fall. At the same time, we must also support the retail food services industry that has struggled throughout this pandemic,” Gov. Wolf said. “The self-certification ensures that restaurants can expand indoor operations and commit to all appropriate orders so that employees and customers alike can be confident they are properly protected.”

Restaurants that self-certify will appear in the Open & Certified Pennsylvania searchable online database of certified restaurants across the commonwealth. Consumers will be able to access this database and find certified businesses in their area, ensuring that consumers can make more informed choices about the food establishments they are looking to patronize.

The self-certification documents and information about the Open & Certified Pennsylvania program can be found online starting September 21st.

Any restaurant that wishes to increase to 50 percent indoor capacity on September 21 must complete the online self-certification process by October 5. Business owners should keep a copy of the self-certification confirmation they will receive by e-mail. Social distancing, masking, and other mitigation measures must be employed to protect workers and patrons.

Further, starting September 21 restaurants that have alcohol sales will close alcohol sales at 10:00 PM.

Additionally, restaurants that self-certify will be mailed Open & Certified Pennsylvania branded materials, such as window clings and other signage designating their certification, which they can display for customers and employees.

The self-certification will be used as part of ongoing enforcement efforts conducted by Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania State Police Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement, and will be shared with the departments of State, Labor & Industry and Health, and other enforcement agencies.

Restaurants operating at 50 percent capacity will have their self-certification status checked as part of ongoing enforcement by these agencies starting on October 5, and will focus on educating businesses.

The commonwealth will continue its measured approach to easing restrictions, keeping the rest of the targeted mitigation tactics specific to the food retail industry in place as restaurants increase capacity to 50 percent.

Further, a restaurant’s listing in the Open & Certified Pennsylvania restaurant database shows it cares about its customers, employees, community and the economic future of the state.

The self-certification process is modelled after a similar mitigation effort in Connecticut, and the alcohol sales limitation is modelled after a similar mitigation effort in Ohio.

“We recognize the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on Pennsylvania’s small businesses, especially on our restaurants,” added Gov. Wolf. “Through this self-certification process, our commonwealth’s restaurant industry will ensure the safety and well-being of both employees and patrons alike, and will be able to begin a return to normal operations and financial recovery.”

Restaurant owners with additional questions about the self-certification program can contact covidselfcert@pa.gov.

It’s recommended that everyone age 6 months and older get vaccinated against the flu every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Caregivers for children between 6 months and 3 years old, who can’t be vaccinated at the Geisinger primary care drive-thru events, should make an appointment with their pediatrician’s office for a flu shot.

While the flu vaccine won’t protect you against COVID-19, it can help keep you out of the hospital.

“This year it’s critical for everyone to receive a flu vaccine,” said Stanley Martin, M.D., Geisinger’s director of infectious diseases. “By getting a flu shot, you’re helping to lessen the chances you end up hospitalized with the flu. Keeping unnecessary flu hospitalizations to a minimum allows our health care heroes to treat patients battling other illnesses and be ready for any possible spikes in COVID-19.”

Flu season generally begins in late October and runs through May. Getting vaccinated early in the season is the best defense to keep yourself and those around you flu-free, Martin said.

“The flu and COVID-19 viruses spread in similar ways,” Martin said. “The same measures you take to protect against COVID-19 — wearing a mask, social distancing and good hand hygiene — can also help stop the spread of the flu. The bonus here is we have a safe and effective vaccine to add to these successful measures.”

Locally, Geisinger’s public drive-thru flu shot events are:
  • Saturday, Oct. 10, at Geisinger St. Luke’s Hospital (Orwigsburg) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Sunday, Oct. 11, at Geisinger St. Luke’s Hospital (Orwigsburg) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 31, at Friendship Fire Co. No. 1, Englewood (Frackville) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 7, at Tremont Area Ambulance from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Local Geisinger primary care offices are offering the drive-thru flu shots to patients and Geisinger Health Plan members from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, and Saturday, Sept. 19, at:
  • Geisinger Frackville
  • Geisinger Orwigsburg
  • Geisinger Pottsville
There’s no need to preregister to get a flu shot. Remember to wear a mask and loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the upper arm.

When arriving at a drive-thru vaccination site, follow all directional signage. You will need to fill out a short electronic form before receiving your flu shot. Remain inside your vehicle next to an opening window, and be aware that staff will not enter vehicles to provide flu shots.

In addition to the drive-thru flu clinics, Geisinger primary care and pediatric offices offer flu shots during regular office hours, with many locations open until 7 p.m. Geisinger Pharmacy locations offer flu shots for patients, and those age 9 and older can get a flu shot at Geisinger Convenient Care locations any day of the week, with no appointment necessary.
