Schuylkill County First Responder Parade and Service Announced for This Sunday

On Tuesday evening, Schuylkill County officials met in front of the Humane Fire Company in Pottsville to announce a special parade and service for local first responders this weekend.

The Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters' Association held the press conference to announce to the media about their plans for the event on Sunday, August 30th, 2020.

On July 30th, the Firefighters' Association announced the cancellation of the 2020 Volunteer Firefighters' Association Convention due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The cancellation not only left the event's host, the Ringtown Valley Fire Company, with a loss of money due to expenses, but the fire service of Schuylkill County was not able to honor their LODD's (Line of Duty Deaths) with their annual service which has been a tradition for 65 years.

As the Volunteer Firefighters' Association President, David Sattizahn stated "Like always, the fire service of Schuylkill County overcomes every obstacle thrown at us and COVID-19 is just another one of those obstacles".

Through the cooperation of the Firefighters' Association with Rev. Crawford, the Schuylkill County Commissioners, the Ringtown Valley Fire and Rescue Co., Pottsville Fire Department, Pottsville Area School District, Schuylkill County Department of Public Safety, Schuylkill County EMS partners, Schuylkill County Police partners, and Schuylkill County Fire Chiefs Association, the organization felt that a parade with a modified service would be a safe way to continue the tradition.

On the evening of Sunday, August 30th, 2020 from 5:00pm to 6:00pm, all willing fire companies, police, and EMS may participate in staging their apparatus at Martz Hall in Pottsville. Ringtown Fire will have their Convention Mugs available for anyone wishing to purchase a mug or take some back to their own firehouses to commemorate the event.

From 6:00pm to 7:00pm, the silent procession of the apparatus led by the Ringtown Valley Fire and Rescue apparatus, will leave Martz Hall and proceed through city which will include an archway at Centre Street. (Full route listed below).

While the procession is taking place, Rev. Crawford, Msgr. O'Connor, and Msgr. William Glosser will conduct a service from the Schuylkill County Emergency Operations Center which will be broadcast over a special operation channel and will be heard through all the apparatus via radio or from their home.

Additional Faith Leaders will also be along the route of the procession.

The procession will lead to the Nativity BVM High School where priests and ministers will bless the apparatus as they pass by and will mark the end of the procession.

Association President Sattizahn thanked everyone who helped make the event a reality.  "It has been a monumental task to bring this service together while still maintaining  the COVID-19 guidelines that we all must remember to follow". he said.

Minersville Police Chief and Police Association President Michael Combs said "We give thanks to the Firefighters' Association for this opportunity that brings all ambulance, fire, and police together and thats a good thing because each one of these people are out there everyday putting their lives on the line and especially in today's environment that isn't recognized."

Ringtown Valley Fire Chief Joseph Gilbert said "We would just like to thank the commissioners and the association.  We were uncertain what was going to happen and when we cancelled it, they came up with this plan to help us defray the cost.  With selling mugs, this will help us defray the cost of about $15,000 which we have invested.  Once again we want thank you".

Pottsville Fire Chief Jim Misstishin said "There were some broken hearts at the time when we had to postpone this, we understand that.  But the Memorial Service means a whole lot more than the convention, the parade, the trucks, the Memorial Service taking care of our own is what we need to do and having the police and EMS involved this year makes it special event".

Attending Tuesday's press conference along with President Sattizahn were the Schuylkill County Commissioners Gary Hess, Baron Hetherington, and George Halcovage, Minersville Police Chief Michael Combs, Pottsville Fire Chief Jim Misstishin, Joseph Gilbert and Joe Mickelsavage from the Ringtown Valley Fire, Scott Krater, Director of Schuylkill County 911, and Shelby Sattizahn from the Schuylkill County Emergency Management.

Procession/Parade Route

- Beginning at Martz Hall
- Travel down Laurel Street to Center Street
- From Center Street to Norwegian Street
- From Norwegian Street across Route 61 to Wolfe Street
- Then Wolfe Street up to Nativity BVM High School

Shenandoah Community Members Continue Annual High School Football Tradition

On Tuesday, four members of the Shenandoah Community continued an annual tradition to show support for the Shenandoah Valley football team.

Brian Rooney, of Shenandoah, began the tradition of painting a Devil's Football Helmet at the intersection of Main and Center Street in the borough almost 20 years ago.

The tradition didn't stop there when others began to spray paint the school's devil on the street in front of player's homes.

During the 2019 season, the football helmet was changed to a North Schuylkill Spartan helmet with the number 6 on to show support for injured Quarterback Jaden Leiby.

"There's really no other community out there that does something like this." said Rooney.

Plans got changed a little for the 2020 season since construction is taking place on Main Street, so the helmet was moved to Stadium Road near the intersection with West Centre Street.

Rooney along with Bill Moyer Sr., Bill Moyer Jr., and Derrick Donchak continued the tradition on Tuesday, all while the Blue Devils practiced on the hill behind them.

During breaks the players stood along the fence and watched as they finished the helmet and spray painted devils as a crosswalk across Stadium Road leading into the stadium.

"It's like a small family when it comes to football in our community.  We just want to show our support to our team" said Bill Moyer Sr.

Justice Department Seeks Data from States, Including Pennsylvania, that Required Admission of COVID-19 Patients to Nursing Homes

$

On Wednesday, the United State Justice Department requested COVID-19 data from the governors of states that issued orders which may have resulted in the deaths of thousands of elderly nursing home residents. New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan required nursing homes to admit COVID-19 patients to their vulnerable populations, often without adequate testing.
The Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division is evaluating whether to initiate investigations under the federal “Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act” (CRIPA), which protects the civil rights of persons in state-run nursing homes, among others. The Civil Rights Division seeks to determine if the state orders requiring admission of COVID-19 patients to nursing homes is responsible for the deaths of nursing home residents.

For example, on March 25, 2020, New York ordered: “No resident shall be denied re-admission or admission to [a nursing home] solely based on a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19. [Nursing homes] are prohibited from requiring a hospitalized resident who is determined medically stable to be tested for COVID-19 prior to admission or readmission.”

“Protecting the rights of some of society’s most vulnerable members, including elderly nursing home residents, is one of our country’s most important obligations,” said Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Division Eric Dreiband. “We must ensure they are adequately cared for with dignity and respect and not unnecessarily put at risk.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, New York has the highest number of COVID-19 deaths in the United States, with 32,592 victims, many of them elderly. New York’s death rate by population is the second highest in the country with 1,680 deaths per million people. New Jersey’s death rate by population is 1,733 deaths per million people – the highest in the nation. In contrast, Texas’s death rate by population is 380 deaths per million people; and Texas has just over 11,000 deaths, though its population is 50 percent larger than New York and has many more recorded cases of COVID-19 – 577,537 cases in Texas versus 430,885 cases in New York. Florida’s COVID-19 death rate is 480 deaths per million; with total deaths of 10,325 and a population slightly larger than New York.

On March 3, 2020, the Attorney General announced the Justice Department’s National Nursing Home Initiative. This is a comprehensive effort by the department, led by the Elder Justice Initiative and in strong partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that uses every available tool to pursue nursing homes that provide substandard care to their residents. As announced on April 10, 2020, the department is also investigating the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke, Massachusetts, where COVID-19 has taken the lives of at least 76 residents. https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/federal-investigation-conditions-nursing-home-veterans-massachusetts-announced

The data requests and Soldiers’ Home investigation are not accusations of fault or wrongdoing by the states or any other individual or entity, and the department has not reached any conclusions about these matters.

Bloomsburg University Shifts All Instruction to Remote Learning

On Thursday, Bloomsburg University announced it will shift all instruction to remote learning effective Monday, Aug. 31, for all courses in progress.

A determination regarding classes scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Oct.. 7, will be made no later than Monday, Sept. 21.

According to a press release from the University, the decision to transition to remote learning came after University leaders saw a concerning upward trend in positive COVID-19 cases within the BU community.

"This decision was made after consultation with my leadership team, members of our Council of Trustees, and the Office of the Chancellor," said Bloomsburg University President Bashar W. Hanna. "With care and concern for the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff, their families, and our neighbors in the Town of Bloomsburg, it is clear that we must make this transition and modify our on-campus operations to protect our community from the continued spread of the COVID-19 virus."

In July, the University announced its "Back to Bloom" plan following federal and state health guidelines.

BU President Hanna and Mayor Bill Kreisher also issued a joint letter to all students prior to the opening of the semester urging students to follow all safety precautions and be good neighbors in town.

All courses in the Zeigler College of Business and the College of Education will switch to remote instruction, as will the majority of courses in the College of Science and Technology and the College of Liberal Arts. Exceptions may be made on a case by case basis for specific courses such as clinicals and labs as we continue to monitor these classes. This follows the guidance of the PA Department of Education reopening guidelines that permits clinical training and field experience for all individuals preparing for licensure and certification.

Students on-campus will not be required to leave their residence halls since a number of students come from areas without broadband access or may not have the support they need to complete the semester successfully. Students who choose to return home will be reimbursed for their remaining room and board. The BU Residence Life staff members and community assistants will be working with all on-campus students to guide and support them during this time.

The Student Health Center will remain open. On-campus facilities (including the Rec Center) will be available to on-campus residents only. All applicable unused fees will be reimbursed as appropriate. Effective immediately, all clubs and organizations have to suspend all in-person activities. They may continue to hold meetings 100% virtually. Any students or groups who do not abide by this emergency policy will be held accountable pursuant to the Student Code of Conduct.

"I know that this announcement will be a disappointment to many of you, and I share your disappointment," said Hanna. "But I am confident that we will work together in support of our students during this transition over the coming days, and throughout a successful fall semester."
