Route 54 Reopens near Locustdale; Work to Continue During Overnight Hours

A detour that was in place while work on Route 54 near Locustdale was lifted Thursday.
According to PennDot District 3, the detour has been lifted on Route 54 between Route 901 (Mount Carmel Highway) Locust Summit to Route 4027 (Lavelle Road) in Locust Dale, Mount Carmel Township; however, motorists should expect lane closures beginning next week as work continues.

On Wednesday, July 15th, the contractor New Enterprise Stone and Lime will continue work on Route 54 at the intersection with Route 901 in Locust Summit. Work will be completed between the hours of 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Motorists should expect single lane conditions with flagging.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of July 2020, weather permitting.

Motorists are urged to slow down, be alert, watch for lane changes, expect delays in travel, and drive with caution through the work zone.

Teen Reported Missing from Lebanon County; Possibly in Schuylkill or Berks County

State Police are investigating a missing teen from Lebanon County.

According Pennsylvania State Police Troop L Public Information Trooper David Beohm, on Thursday, July 9th, 2020, around 1:00pm, troopers responded to West Richland Avenue, Myerstown Borough, Lebanon County for the report of a missing Juvenile. 

Upon arrival, Troopers were informed that the Juvenile had not been seen since Tuesday, July 7th, 2020, at 10:30pm. 

The Juvenile, Calvin BLATT, 15, is described, 5'8", 140 pounds, brown eyes, brown curly hair, and an athletic build. The Juvenile was last seen wearing black athletic shorts.

It is believed the Juvenile may have been picked up by an acquaintance with an unknown destination in the Lebanon, Berks, or Schuylkill County area.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact 911 or your local police station.


"Back the Blue" Campaign Visits More Schuylkill County Law Enforcement Agencies

As part of the "Back the Blue" campaign that we posted about yesterday, the group continued to hand out more gift baskets to area police on Friday.
Shawn Phillips helped organize several departments to come to one spot to receive their baskets.

Picture are Police Departments from Tamaqua, Coaldale, McAdoo, Kline Township, Rush Township, Port Carbon, New Philadelphia, Walker Township, New Castle Township, and Schuylkill Township.

Not pictured but also receiving baskets were Blythe Township, West Penn Township, and Ryan Township.

The group also dropped off a basket at the Pennsylvania State Police Barracks in Frackville.


Lease Signed to Build Schuylkill County's First All-Inclusive Playground in Minersville

On Friday, Dustin's Adventureland officially signed a lease with the borough of Minersville to build Schuylkill County's first all-inclusive playground.

Dustin's Adventureland is a non-profit that was organized to eliminate barriers for children that are handicapped or have special needs. The non-profit's mission was to build a playground that will be specifically designed for these children. 

The non-profit has raised nearly $25,000, all through fundraising throughout the county. 

On Friday, the group and the borough of Minersville took the next step to make the playground a reality.

During a recent meeting, Borough Council unanimously approved a piece of land to be leased by the non-profit. The land is located  between the Lions Pavilion and swimming pool at the Minersville Recreation Complex.

Dustin Adventureland's President James Womer and Borough Council President Katielynn Milbrandt officially signed the lease Friday with Dustin's Adventureland Vice President Jeffrey Dunkel and  Board Member Bob Giba present.  Present from Minersville were borough council members Mike Firestine, Sarah Newton, Robert Umbenhen, Ian Mahal, Vice President Stephen Darosh, as well as Borough Manager Bobby Mahalchick.

"On behalf of Dustin's Adventureland, we would like to thank the borough for allowing us to enter into least with them, for construction of the playground" said  President James Womer.

"We are so excited to have Dustin's Adventureland coming to the borough of Minersville to build the first all-inclusive playground in Schuylkill County." said Borough Council President Milbrandt.

Dustin's Adventureland Vice President Dunkel thanked the Minersville Lions and also the Minersville Little League for working closely with them.  "It's been several months in the making for this lease to come together.  It's finally coming to fruition so we are excited."

"This is something that the county needs to address the children that have special needs.  The biggest pleasure we are going to have from this is seeing the smiles on the young children's faces and that says it all right there" said Borough Manager Mahalchick.

A groundbreaking for the project is expected to take place in the Summer of 2021.

Dennis R. Schott, 64, Frackville passed away Tuesday July 7th at his home.

Born in Ashland, he was a son of the late John and Mary Palulis Schott.

Dennis was known for being an excellent musician and playing in the former band, Tucker Young.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John H. Schott III.

Dennis is survived by his two sisters and a brother.

Funeral services will be announced at a later date.

Charles J. Antonelli, 72, of Forestville, Cass Township, passed away on Thursday at Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest.

Born in Pottsville, he was a son of the late Charles and Elizabeth Chernosky Antonelli. He was a 1965 graduate of Cass Township High School. He was employed by the former Tamaqua Cable Company (now Prysmian Draka Cableteq) until retiring.

He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Minersville.

Preceding him in death was his wife of 46 years, the former Mary Bohr, on October 19, 2019.

Charles is survived by three daughters, Cheryl Hart (spouse, Neal), Cass Township, April Moran (spouse, Paul), Norwegian Township, and Crystal Gillis (spouse, Michael), Mechanicsburg; four grandchildren, Aiden Moran, Katelyn Moran, Emily Hart, and Jackson Gillis; two siblings, Craig Antonelli (spouse, Patricia), Newtown, Reilly Township, and Donna Bernasz (spouse, William), Forestville; a nephew, Edward Pollman.

Thomas K. McCabe, Jr.
, 35, of Girardville, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 4th, 2020, in Shenandoah.

Thomas was born in Pottsville on December 16, 1984, a son of Kimberly Ann (Spital) Houtz, of Girardville, and Thomas K. McCabe, Sr., of Frackville. He attended the Shenandoah Valley School District and last worked locally as a short order cook. He was of the catholic faith.

Affectionately known as "Bubba' and "Fluffy", he loved to make people laugh and was always the life of the party.

He was an avid Penn State and Dallas Cowboys fan and he also was also a fan of the New York Yankees.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kevin Houtz and Nicholas McCabe.

In addition to his parents, Thomas is survived by the love of his life and best friend, Tabie Jones of Tamaqua, and their son, Conner.

He is also survived by his sisters, Amy Houtz, of Pottsville; Kristen McCabe, of Girardville; Meagen McCabe, of Girardville; Cassidy Houtz, of Girardville; a brother, Eric McCabe, of Girardville and by his maternal grandmother, Genevieve Spital, of Mahanoy City.

Thomas is also survived by his extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Tuesday, July 21st, 2020 at 12 Noon at the Stauffer-Breznik Funeral Home in Ringtown.

Visitation with Thomas's family will be held from 11AM until the time of the service.

All guests are reminded of the protocols for social distancing and the use of face masks as mandated.

Mary Louise Buchinsky
, 58, of Shenandoah, passed away on Wednesday, July 8th, 2020 at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Shenandoah on January 29th, 1962, she was the daughter of the late Theodore ‘Ted” and Rita (Banewicz) Williams.

Mary Lou was a 1979 graduate of the Shenandoah Valley High School, and then continued her education at Penn State University – Schuylkill Campus. She worked as the office manager for the Borough of Shenandoah for more than 20 years. She loved spending time with family and taking care of everybody. Mary Lou enjoyed her collection of purses.

Preceding her in death, besides her parents, was her sister, Rita Williams Holman in 2006 and a father-in-law, John Jack Buchinsky in 2017

She leaves behind her loving husband of 35 years, John Jack Buchinsky, 1 son, John Jack Buchinsky IV with his wife Bre, of Shenandoah, 1 daughter, Jillian Onisick with her husband John, of Shenandoah, and a grandson, John Theo Onisick. 3 brothers, Ted Williams with his wife Patricia, of New Jersey and their children, Teddy, Johnny, Trisha, Michael, and Rita Marie, Gerry Williams Sr. of Minersville and his children, Gerry and Amy, and John Williams with his wife Beth, Pottsville, and their children Josh and Zack. Of the late Rita Williams Holman, her children, Jess and David. 1 brother-in-law, Yogi with his wife Eileen and their children, Jim and Mark, 2 sister-in-laws, Julie Faleski and Joann Pribish with her son Zack. Mother-in-law, Madeline Buchinsky. Several great nieces and nephews also survive.

A visitation for family and friends will be conducted on Monday, July 13th from 5 to 8pm at the Oravitz Home for Funerals Inc, 40 N. Jardin St, Shenandoah and then on Tuesday morning, July 14th from 8 to 9:30am at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10am in Divine Mercy Parish, 218 W. Cherry St, Shenandoah and will be officiated by Msgr. Ronald Bocian. Burial will follow in St. Casimir’s Parish Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the: Rita R. Holman Breast Cancer Foundation.

Man Killed in Motorcycle Crash in Schuylkill County on Saturday

A Berks County man died from his injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash in Schuylkill County on Saturday.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven, the crash occurred on Route 895/Market Street near the intersection with Summit Lane in West Brunswick Township near Auburn around noon, Saturday.

Police say the crash occurred when Juan Gonzalez-Sanchez, 36, of Hamburg was traveling east on Route 895 on a Honda CBR600RR Motorcycle at a high rate of speed.

Gonzalez-Sanchez lost control of his motorcycle and exited the right should of the roadway striking a wooden pole.

Gonzalez-Sanchez and the motorcycle came to a final rest in the eastbound lanes of Route 895

Gonzalez-Sanchezwas transported to Geisinger St. Luke's in Orwigsburg via Auburn Ambulance but later died at the hospital due to his injuries.

Assisting police at the crash were the Auburn Fire Department and EMS.

Thomas G. Hughes, Sr.
, 89, of Annville, and formerly of Pottsville, passed away on Thursday morning in Cedar Haven Healthcare Center, Lebanon.

Born in Pottsville, on May 14, 1931, he was a son of the late Walter E. and Laura E. (Pappert) Hughes.

Tom was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit, Palmyra, and former member of St. John R.C.C., Pottsville, and its Holy Name Society.

He was a graduate of Pottsville Catholic High School and he proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Tom was employed at the A&P Grocery Stores in various positions, including manager for 25 years and then with the State of Pennsylvania for 22 years, retiring in 1998 as an accountant.

He was a member of the Pottsville American Legion and a member of the former Greenwood Hill Fire Company.

Tom was a wonderful husband and father and had a heart of gold, helping anyone in need. He was very caring, generous, and a faithful friend and blood donor. He especially loved traveling and was an avid reader and bowler and enjoyed roller skating in his earlier days.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by all of his siblings, brothers: Anthony, Vincent, John, Joseph, and Leo; sisters: Anna, Eve, and Louise.

Tom is survived by his wife, Anne (Ryan) Hughes, to whom he was married 58 years; two sons; Thomas G. Hughes, husband of Donna M. , of Pottsville; and Robert A. Hughes, of Annville; grandchildren: Robert A. Herndon, James N. and Rebecca M. Hughes, and Naomi C. McFarland, wife of Alex: great grandchildren: Alexandria and Donovan; and several nieces and nephews.

Services and interment with military honors in St. John #2 Cemetery are private at the convenience of family.

The family will accept visitors at Dutcavich Funeral Home, 200 Sunbury Street, Minersville, on Wednesday from 7:00 A.M. Visitors are expected to follow CDC guidelines regarding wellness and social distancing. Visitation will end promptly at 8:45 A.M. when procession will form. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 A.M. in St. Michael the Archangel Church, 539 Sunbury Street, Minersville. Interment will be in Schuylkill Memorial Park, North Manheim Township.

Violet I Frey
, beloved mother and grandmother. 91 years of age, of South Tamaqua, Pennsylvania passed away on Friday, July 10, 2020, at Hometown Nursing & Rehabilitation Ctr. in Hometown.

Born Friday, November 9, 1928 in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. the daughter of the late Leroy and Stella (Kunkel) Schaeffer. She was also predeceased by her husband Walter Tomas Frey; sister, Grace Serfass.

Surviving are daughter, Lori A. Kammerdiener and her husband Robert with whom she resided; granddaughter, Erika Mullin; niece, Cara Serfass.

A graduate of Tamaqua High School, Violet retired from the former Atlas Powder Co. of Reynolds after 42 years of service. Violet enjoyed her home and spending time with her family.

Jeanette (Thomas) O'Gorman
, of North Lehigh Street Tamaqua, passed away on Saturday July 11, 2020 as a guest of the Hometown Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at the age of 92 years.

Born in Pottsville the daughter of the late John and Anna (Tarconish) Thomas. She was also predeceased by; husband, Robert F. O'Gorman on August 2, 2004; son, Robert O'Gorman on August 16, 2007; sister, Agnes Thomas; brother, Edward Thomas.

A graduate of Blythe Twp. High School, Jeanette was a floor lady in the textile industry. She was a member of St. John XXIII R.C.C. of Tamaqua; however if you asked Jeanette where she had been lately she would reply "at her second church, the casino". Jeanette was very independent and always was the chauffeur.

She is survived by; daughter, Jane A. Dietrich and her husband Jurgen of Kernersville, NC.; daughter-in-law Cindy O'Gorman of California; grandchildren; Sean and Connor O'Gorman, Andreas Dietrich and his wife Christina, Heidi James and her fiancee Michael Rowland; six great grandchildren; brothers, Joseph Thomas of Tamaqua, John Thomas and his wife of Whitehall; many nieces and nephews.

John J. Pizzico, 83, of Minersville, passed away Thursday at his home.

Born in Minersville, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary Antonelli Pizzico.

He was a graduate of Minersville High School and was retired from the Van Heusen Corporation. He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Minersville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-father George Walters Jr. and a brother Joseph.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Carol Koch; a daughter Laurie Tobin and her husband Brian, North Carolina; 3 grandchildren, Melissa Amburn, Matthew Tobin and Brian Tobin Jr.; 4 great grandchildren, Madelyn Amburn, Tucker Tobin, Luke Tobin and Collin Tobin; 3 sisters, Anna Butcavage, Minersville, Rose Marie Minder and her husband Raymond, Forestville and Georgine Walters, Minersville; nieces and nephews.

Bridge Work to Begin This Week on Route 61 in Ashland

PennDOT has announced bridge work that will begin this week in Ashland.

According to PennDOT, beginning Monday, July 13th, 2020, bridge repair work will begin on Route 61 between Brock Street and Water Street in Ashland.

Lane restriction with flagging with be in place between 7:00am and 5:00pm. Drivers should use caution in the area.

The work is expected to be completed by July 30th, 2020.


Road to Close Daily for Bridge Work in Upper Mahantango Township

PennDOT will be closing a road daily this week while they work on a bridge in Upper Mahantango Township.


Bridge Repair work will take place from July 13th, 2020 until July 17th, 2020 on Ridge Road/Main Street between Creektown Road and Hoffman Road in Upper Mahantango Township near Klingerstown.

The road will be closed and detoured between the hours of 6:30am and 2:30pm.  Rain will cause delays for this project.

State Police Seize Nearly $6 Million in Drugs Statewide During Second Quarter of 2020

Last week, the Pennsylvania State Police announced that during the second quarter of 2020, troopers confiscated almost $6,000,000 worth of illicit drugs.


Police say from April 1 through June 30, state police seized nearly 47 of pounds heroin and fentanyl, with a street value of more than $1 million. State police also removed nearly 32 pounds of cocaine and crack cocaine from Pennsylvania communities. 

The following breakdown of seized drugs was provided along with their value:

State police also collected 211 pounds of prescription and other medication as part of its drug take-back program in the second quarter of 2020. There are 65 drug take-back boxes at state police stations throughout the commonwealth, providing a safe way to dispose of unused or unwanted medication 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Pennsylvania Lottery Scratch Off Ticket Worth $5,000 Sold in Girardville in June

Last week, the Pennsylvania Lottery Ticket announced that a scratch off lottery ticket worth $5,000 was sold in Girardville in June.

According to the PA Lottery, Scratch-Off winners claimed $243,034,728 million in prizes during June, including two top prizes worth $3 million. One of those top prizes was split by two players – one from Allegheny County and the other from Chester County. The other was claimed by a player from Philadelphia. 

The Pennsylvania Lottery Scratch-Off "My Best Life" awarded a top prize to a player in Lackawanna County. The top prize offers an annuity option of $1,000 a week for life or a cash option of $1.04 million. Additionally, there were five top prizes worth $1 million claimed in June by players from Schuylkill, Dauphin, Franklin, Fayette and Adams counties.

Congratulations to the retailers who earned a $10,000 bonus for selling the $3 million-winning tickets and the "My Best Life ticket", and to the retailers who earned a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning Scratch-Off tickets worth $1 million. They are:

No Injuries Reported in Beaver Dam Road Crash in Butler Township Overnight

No injuries were reported after a crash in Butler Township overnight.


Around 1:15am, emergency personnel were dispatched to Beaver Dam Road near the intersection of Turnpike Road near Fountain Springs for a one car motor vehicle accident.

The crash occurred as a driver was travelling on Beaver Dam Road and after crossing a bridge over the Little Mahanoy Creek, lost control and drove into a wooded area down a small embankment.

Butler Township Police along with fire crews from Fountain Springs, Englewood, and Lavelle responded to the scene.

Ashland Rescue was called but later cancelled after police were first to arrive on scene and reported the driver was just shaken up and not injuries.

Fire crews cleared the scene within a half hour while Butler Township Police remained on scene until a tow truck arrived.

Millicent D. Szilagyi, 67, of Minersville, passed away on Saturday at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Schuylkill – East.

Born in Indiana, Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late Lysle and Rosalie Lowman Snyder. She was raised in Perkasie and was a 1970 graduate of Pennridge High School. She had worked as an office manager at the former Bethlehem Steel Martin Tower. She was a former Nurse’s Aide.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Miriam Parsons.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Bela William Szilagyi; three children, Jennifer Szilagyi, Minersville, Theresa Szilagyi (spouse, Carlos Cruz), Primrose, Cass Township, and Travis Szilagyi (spouse, Jessie); Hellertown; eight grandchildren, Brian Neff (spouse, Ally), Sixx Neff, Devin Cruz, Jadyn Cruz, Skylor Cruz, Isabella Cruz, Michael Szilagyi and Antoinette Szilagyi; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Karsyn Neff. She is also survived by four siblings, Jeff Snyder, Doug Snyder, Corinna Dyer, Connie Hebert.

The family will accept visitors at Dutcavich Funeral Home, 200 Sunbury Street, Minersville, on Wednesday from 6:00 P.M. with funeral services to follow at 7:30 P.M. Visitors and attendees are expected to follow CDC guidelines regarding wellness and social distancing.

Joann J. Weaver, 79, of Minersville passed away Saturday morning at The Gardens At York Terrace Nursing Home , Pottsville.

Born in Minersville, she was the daughter of the late Vincent and Dorothy Hoskins Haffey.

She was of the Catholic faith and was a retired garment worker.

She is survived by 4 sons, Michael Mason and his wife Cheryl, Newtown, Bruce Mason, Cumbola, James Mason Jr., MarLin and William Mason, Minersville; 2 sisters, Diane Kline, Lebanon and Alice Stevenson, Palo Alto; and a cousin, Larry Haffey. .

Margaret M Schucker, 93, of Myerstown, formerly of Pitman, passed away Saturday, July 11th, at StoneRidge Town Center, Myerstown.

Margaret was born in Pitman, on August 22, 1926, a daughter of the late Gertrude (Snyder) and William G Ochenrider.

She was the widow of Clervin E Schucker.

She was a.1944 graduate of the former Hegins Twp High School

Margaret was a member of St. Paul's E.C. Church, Pitman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and by a daughter Jane Hower.

She is survived by a daughter, Rose M, husband of Lynn Basselgia, of Myerstown; by three grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, Klingerstown,, with Rev. Todd Wolfe officiating.

Burial will be made in St. Paul's Cemetery, Pitman.

Police Activity on Peach Mountain in Norwegian Township Monday Morning

Police and emergency personnel are at the scene of an incident on Peach Mountain in Norwegian Township Monday morning.


Around 9:30am, Monday, emergency personnel were dispatched to the area of 1321 Peach Mountain Road, Norwegian Township, near Saint Clair for an off road rescue.

As of 11:30am, emergency personnel including local and state police are still at the scene.

Driver Flees Scene of Crash in Ashland Late Sunday

A driver fled the scene of a crash late Monday in Ashland.


Around 10:30pm, Sunday, emergency personnel responded to the intersection of Oak Street and 9th Street for a motor vehicle accident.

Ashland Fire Chief Phil Groody was first at the scene and found a SUV crashed through the fence of yard at the intersection with no driver at the scene.

Fire crews and fire police responded to the scene along with the Pennsylvania State Police.

State Police continue to investigate the crash.

Oakland Auto assisted with towing of the vehicle.



TRAFFIC ALERT: Route 54 Closed near Schuylkill/Carbon County Line Due to Crash

As of 1:30pm, Monday, Route 54 is closed near the Schuylkill/Carbon County line due a crash.


A 4 vehicle crash that included a motorcycle reportedly occurred around 1:00pm, Monday near the Hauto Fire Company along Route 54 in Carbon County.

This has caused a road closure of Route 54 from Hometown to Nesquehoning.

Man Shot in Wooded Area in Norwegian Township; State Police Investigate

The Pennsylvania State Police are investigating what they are calling an "accidental" shooting in Norwegian Township.


According to the Schuylkill Haven Barracks, on Monday, July 13th, 2020 around 9:30am, troopers investigated a report of an accidental shooting which took place around 5:30pm on Sunday, July 12th, 2020.

The victim, only described as a 72 year old man, was said to have been found by two hikers.

The victim told police that he was sleeping on a chair in the wooded area east of Peach Mountain Road near a pond when he woke to the sound of gunshots and was struck in the leg by a small caliber round.

The victim also said he saw two males across the pond after he was shot, one of them holding a "AR-15" rifle.

The two men were described as being in their late 20's or early 30's, one was said to have a dark colored beard, the other did not have a beard but had "sandy" colored hair.

The suspects fled the scene in an unknown direction and did not offer the victim any assistance.

The victim was reported to have been wearing fully camouflage as he was sleeping and prior to being struck.

The shooting is believed to have been an accident.

The victim was transported to Lehigh Valley-Cedar Crest near Allentown for treatment.
