A Pottsville man is in custody after he admitted to shooting a dog with a revolver on Saturday.

According to Pottsville Police Chief Richard Wojciechowsky, on Saturday, February 24th, 2018 around 8:20pm, police were dispatched to 207 W Market Street to investigate an incident of a dog being injured.

At the scene, a Pottsville man, who was not identified, told police that his 10 year old German-Shepard named Diddy had been shot by a man who had been inside the apartment with the dog owner and two other adults.

The suspect had fled immediately after the incident and the dog had run out of the house as well.

Police Officers were able to locate the dog and observed a serious wound in the area of his right eye. A representative of the Hillside SPCA responded and assisted police in obtaining emergency medical care for the dog.

An investigation led to police identifying the suspect as Anthony Holmes, 30, of Pottsville, as the person who had shot the dog.

Wojciechowsky said that Holmes was located on Sunday, February 25th, 2018 and took him into custody.

During an interview with police, Holmes admitted to investigators that he had shot the dog with a .38 caliber revolver and had then hidden the weapon inside the home of an acquaintance. Holmes provided further information that enabled officers to recover the weapon.

A criminal complaint was prepared by Pottsville Patrolman Jonathan Randolph charging Holmes with Aggravated Cruelty to an Animal, Possessing Instruments of Crime, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Cruelty to Animal and Discharging a Firearm in the City.

Holmes was arraigned by on-duty Magisterial District Judge Ferrier, Orwigsburg, who set bail at $15,000 and Holmes was committed to the Schuylkill County Prison pending posting of bail or further court action.

Diddy is currently recovering at an emergency veterinarian hospital.  As of Sunday afternoon he was listed in critical condition and had developed aspiration pneumonia.  He is also reported to have had bullet fragments in his jaw. His medical bills have been covered by the Hillside SPCA.

Anyone wishing to help pay for Diddy's medical bills can do so by donating to  Joe and Caroline Emergency Fund online @ Hillsidespca.com, at the shelter, or Hillside SPCA, PO Box 233, Pottsville PA 17901.

The money donated goes directly to Joe and Caroline's Emergency Fund which directly cares for any expenses needed.

Mahanoy City Awarded Grant from PennDOT for Intersection Upgrade

On Monday, Governor Tom Wolf announced that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will distribute nearly $11.5 million in Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) funding to 35 municipalities statewide to fund 41 safety projects including one in Schuylkill County.

Under state law, fines from red light violations at 30 intersections in Philadelphia supply the grant funding. Pennsylvania’s ARLE program aims to improve safety at signalized intersections by providing automated enforcement at locations where data shows red-light running has been an issue.
The law specifies that projects improving safety, enhancing mobility and reducing congestion can be considered for funding. Municipalities submitted more than 143 applications, totaling over $34 million in requests.

Projects were selected by an eight-member committee based on criteria such as benefits and effectiveness, cost, local and regional impact, and cost sharing.

This investment brings the total dollars awarded through the ARLE funding program since 2010 to $62.87 million, funding 366 safety projects.

In Schuylkill County, Mahanoy City will receive $68,000 to upgrade pedestrian facilities at the
intersection of Route 339 (North Main Street) and Park Place Road by installing new ADA-compliant curb ramps, sidewalks and signs.
“This program helps communities across the state make investments in traffic flow and safety,” Governor Wolf said. “These improvements complement the many road, bridge, and multimodal projects happening in Pennsylvania.”

Schuylkill County Obituaries for 02/26/2018

---------------------------------------------------------

Marie Diane Fetterolf, 79, of Lavelle, entered into eternal peace, surrounded by her loving family, Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018 after a 2 month battle with cancer. Marie was born on Feb. 20, 1938 to Russell and Marie Hoffman, of Lavelle. She attended Butler Schools. Marie married the love of her life, William Fetterolf, on June 3, 1958. He preceded her in death in 1998. They have 3 daughters together, Cindy(Susie), Amy, and Wendy, and a very special friend who was like a son to them, Dave Kessler. In her earlier years, Marie worked for the Gitman Brothers at Ashland Shirt Factory. Marie dearly loved her husband, who was her "rock" and her true love, and her children, but she also dearly loved her animals, which were also like her children. Marie had many horses and dogs throughout her life and dedicated much of her time to making sure that they had the best life possible. She loved riding her horses and taking many trips to horse shows throughout the East Coast where she made many friends that shared that same passion. Her young children and her husband were always by her side at the horse shows. Her love of horses shone through and was shared with many of their "horse friends", and many of her and her husband's lifelong friendships were developed and celebrated at the weekend-long events. If anyone was looking for Marie, they knew where to find her: with her horses! She took pride in showing off her Tennessee Walking Horses, and also took pride in her daughter's Clydesdale, Nick, who could be seen courting the Grand Marshal in local holiday parades.
Marie also loved the outdoors, loved having picnics at World's End State Park, going to Knoebel's, with her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, taking motorcycle rides on the back of her son-in-law, Tom's, Harley, going to her favorite place to eat, May's, and really anything to do with road trips and the outdoors with the ones she loved. She would spend all of her free time running errands with her daughter Susie, and with her sister/ best friend in the entire world, Judy. Her relationship with her sister Judy was a bond that could only be broken in death, and was the shining light in every part of her day. Marie's husband Bill had built by hand their horses' home, a beautiful barn, and her most recent endeavor was helping her daughter build a brand new barn for their horses, which she was very proud of. She truly enjoyed the simple things in life, like family, friends, and pets, things that we should all enjoy every day and not take for granted. She always put everyone's needs before her own, a value she passed on to her children.

Marie is survived by her sister, Judy Mattern and her husband, Dan of Lavelle; 3 daughters, Cindy (Susie) Wolfgang, of Lavelle, Amy Francis, of Lavelle, and Wendy Yacko, of Danville; grandchildren; a very special grandson whom her and her husband raised, Russ Weikel, of Ashland, Suzanne (Wolfgang) Bressi, and her husband Darvey, of Paxinos, Amy Fetterolf of Lavelle, Andrea Francis of Phoenix, Az; great-grandchildren Alivia, Alexis, Alana, and Amare; and several nieces and nephews. Marie is also survived by her 2 fur babies, whom she loved dearly, a German Shepard named Sarge and a Jack Russell Terrier named Lilly. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill, an infant brother, Charles, a grandson, Bobby Wolfgang, and many horses that she will be riding once again, in Heaven.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM in the Church of the Nazarene, Rt. 901 Lavelle, on Saturday, March 3, 2018, with Pastor Jeremy Smallwood as Celebrant. Visitation for friends and family will be held from 9:30am-11am, with a memorial service to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hillside SPCA, 51 Spca Road, Pottsville, to any other Dog Rescue of your choice, or to the Central PA Horse Rescue, 100 Spanglers Road, Lewisberry, Pa 17339.Kull-Heizenroth Funeral Home Inc., Ashland, PA is in charge of arrangements.

The Tamaqua Historical society is holding a reception this weekend with exhibits, craft beer tasting, and reenactors.

This Saturday evening March 3, 2018 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, the Tamaqua Historical Society will present its opening reception for a new, large special exhibit titled “Coal Region Breweries” in the Tamaqua Museum Annex at 114 West Broad Street in Tamaqua.

The special reception is free and open to the public.

This is a 250th Anniversary of Anthracite celebratory event.

In addition to the large exhibit of 150 years of coal region brewing history, there will be beer tastings from three regional craft brewers including the Conyngham Brewing Company from outside of Hazleton, the Pilger Ruh Brewing Company from Pine Grove, and the soon to be opened Revere Brewing Company at the east end of Tamaqua next to Sisters Mexican Cantina.

Revere Brewing is one of two new micro-breweries opening in Tamaqua in the near future.

Representatives from the local craft beer club “Anthracite Girls Pint Out” will be helping out with the craft beer tasting. Stop by and find out more about their organization.

The large exhibit occupying most of the Tamaqua Museum Annex includes coal region breweriana such as a replica vintage bar, more than 80 antique beer trays, vintage beer barrels, kegs, cases, cans, bottles, advertising, taps, coasters, openers, coal miner tobaccos, local whiskey jugs, local bar tokens, Tamaqua brewery artifacts, a moonshine still, a 1923 classic coal region refrigerator loaded with contents, and a prohibition display.

Many artifacts are on loan from a number of private collections. The Tamaqua Area Historical Museum next door will also be open with free admission. Several reenactors will add to the coal region atmosphere with music on the old bar player piano, and other antics that are planned for this fun evening.

The historical society will offer snacks and other light refreshments to those who do not want to sample the craft beer brews.
