Lehigh Valley Hospital–Schuylkill is offering a free multi-week program geared to help people at risk of becoming diabetic.

It’s part of the National Diabetes Prevention Program, a free, lifestyle-change program designed to help individuals prevent or delay Type 2 Diabetes. Programs are being offered in Pottsville and New Ringgold beginning in late October.

The New Ringgold sessions are held Wednesday evenings beginning October 25. The Pottsville programs will be offered Thursday afternoons beginning October 26.

LVH–Schuylkill’s Diabetic Educators have been trained as lifestyle coaches and will work with participants to learn skills to make lasting changes such as losing a modest amount of weight, being more physically active, and managing stress.

To register, participants are asked to call 570-621-4997

People with pre-diabetes — higher-than-normal blood glucose (sugar) levels — are 5 to 15 times more likely to develop type II diabetes than those with normal blood glucose levels. In fact, many people with pre-diabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within 3 years if they do not take steps to prevent it.

The program consists of 16 weekly sessions and an additional six monthly sessions. There are certain requirements for the program. LVH–Schuylkill clinical diabetes educators can give more information or register those who are eligible.

Research shows that modest behavior changes, such as making better food choices and increasing physical activity, reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent in people at high-risk for developing this disease. The National Diabetes Prevention Program brings together federal agencies, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, employers, insurers, health care professionals, academia, and other stakeholders to prevent or delay the onset of type II diabetes among people with pre-diabetes. www.cdc.gov/diabetes/prevention.

One in three American adults has pre-diabetes, so the need for prevention has never been greater. The Diabetes Prevention Program offers a proven approach to preventing or delaying the onset of type II diabetes through modest lifestyle changes made with the support of a coach and one’s peers.”

Participants learn how to eat healthy, add physical activity to their routine, manage stress, stay motivated, and solve problems that can get in the way of healthy changes LVH–Schuylkill groups will meet once a week for 16 weeks, then once a month for 6 months to maintain healthy lifestyle changes. The program’s group setting provides a supportive environment with people who are facing similar challenges and trying to make the same changes. Together participants celebrate their successes and find ways to overcome obstacles.

If you're about to play it safe, stop. Consider Robert Neil Laberta, you probably know him as Bobby or Big Bucks Bob, who entered into eternal life on October 4, 2017.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-siblings, Thomas Irving, John Irving and Rose Irving Dziak.

His caring spirit is carried on by his wife of 33 years, Mary Ellen (Peterson) Laberta and his son, Robert Neil Laberta of Mifflinville, as well as his sister in-law and brother in-law, Miriam and Alexander Kosatschkow, along with his nieces and nephews who all provided loving care, humor and comfort in his final days. We were all blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Bobby during his 71 years, among them, "If the opportunity comes, take it."

Born into the world in Hazleton on February 24, 1946, to Margaret (McAndrew) and Neil A. Laberta, he not only preached those words, but lived them.

Searving as a Sgt. in the US Army following his high school graduation in 1964, he began his wild ride through life, taking advantage of each opportunity to come his way. Attending Penn State University, he later applied his knowledge and drive to become a successful businessman, which included being a licensed real estate agent; an independent insurance agent; and finally owner of RNL Enterprises & Z-Sweeper Guy, with offices in PA, Delaware and Maryland.

When he wasn;t busy making money, he liked to spend it. Preferably in Las Vegas where you could catch him rolling dice with lady luck by his side. A modern day Davey Crockett, he loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, trapping and camping throughout the US. He also loved Reese's peanut butter cups, his howling beagle buddy "Buster", TV shows about Ancient Aliens and the late night radio show "Coast to Coast AM". He hated tomatoes, milk and wasted opportunities.

Bobby has left detailed instructions for his wife, child, family and friends to celebrate his mission which is now complete - "Save your money. Live life to the fullest every day. Work hard and never forget that family is everything." He also noted to never forget that "fire is your friend" and " in the begining there was a word. The word was beer......and it was good!"

Private funeral services for Bobby will be held by his family, with interment following in the Mt. Zion Cemtery. To leave a condolence for his family, please visit www.ringtownfuneral.com

The Stauffer-Breznik Funeral Home, Ringtown, is assisiting Bobby's family during their time of need.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 5 announced earlier this week that work to remediate a recent rock slide along US 209/Mauch Chunk Street in  Mahoning Township, Carbon County is scheduled to begin next week.

“We have hired a contractor, and anticipate work beginning next Tuesday,”
Assistant Construction Engineer John Harmonosky said. “The work is expected to take a little over three weeks.”

Work is scheduled to begin Tuesday, October 10, and will entail full closures of US 209 north and south on weekdays (Mondays through Fridays) between the hours of 9 AM and 2 PM. During these full closures, US 209 traffic will be detoured on Packerton Dam Road, Hemlock Drive, PA 902, South 9th Street, PA 443, US 209, Harrity Road, Fairyland Road, Long Run Road, Maury Road, and
PA 903.

A single lane will be open on US 209 north and south weekdays from 2 PM to 9 AM and from 2 PM Fridays through 9 AM Mondays.

“The closures are necessary to protect the public from any rocks that may fall during the scaling work, and provide the contractor space to safely maneuver equipment,” Inspector-in-Charge Calvin Ulshafer said. “We intend to get this work done as safely and quickly as possible.”

Workers will remove fallen rock from the roadway, scale back and remove additional rock from the mountain, install mesh netting to help prevent future rocks from falling, mill and pave US 209 north in the work area, and perform other ancillary work.

On September 8, multiple large rocks slid off the side of the mountain alongside US 209 between Race Street and Oak Avenue. Since then the two-lane section of US 209 north going up Flagstaff Mountain (“Mansion House Hill”) has been reduced to a single lane. When this work is complete the second lane on US 209 north will re-open.

This section of US 209 has an average daily traffic volume of 9,814 vehicles.

New Enterprise Stone & Lime, Inc. of New Enterprise, Pa., is the general contractor on the $354,103 emergency project that is expected to be complete by October 27.
