New enhancements to Mohegan Sun Arena were unveiled Friday.
The Luzerne County Convention Center Authority today alongside State Senator John Yudichack, State Representative Eddie Day Pashinski and the SMG-management staff at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre Township unveiled three recent enhancements to the nearly 18-year-old facility including paving and stabilization of the arena parking lot, renovation of the ice floor surface and installation of acoustic panels throughout the venue.

“For the past five years we have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to make improvements to better the Arena and enhance the guest experience,” said Luzerne County Convention Center Authority Capital Improvements and Strategic Planning Committee Chairwoman Donna Cupinski. “These projects began five years ago with a new video scoreboard and have culminated with a new ice rink, acoustic panels in the ceiling and a completely paved parking lot. From hockey games to concerts to family shows, we hope you enjoy these enhancements at your Mohegan Sun Arena.”

“Over just the past few years, under the direction of members of the LCCCA in partnership with SMG, the world-wide leader in private facility management, we have made great physical improvements to our venue in Wilkes-Barre Township,” said SMG General Manager of Mohegan Sun Arena Brian Sipe. “I want to thank all of the members of the Authority, all of our employees at the arena, all of our local, state and federal officials who support our venue and recognize all of the great things this venue has meant to Northeastern Pennsylvania. Our venue has been nationally recognized for our ticket sales, our employees have won awards recognizing their talents and achievements and Wilkes-Barre continues to be a great market for concerts to see, hockey to enjoy and local high school and college students to play basketball or receive their diplomas. I couldn’t be more grateful to our customers who continue to buy tickets and support the arena.”

Funding for these projects came through the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority (LCCCA) Variable Rate Demand Hotel Room Rental Tax Revenue Bonds Series of 2012 and the Local Share Account Grant awarded to Wilkes-Barre Township on behalf of the LCCCA. All three projects were publicly bid with $1,360,380 going towards the parking lot upgrades, $1,124,647 towards the ice rink renovation and $400,714 towards the acoustic panel installation of which $100,000 was funded by the LSA Grant.

Fans of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have the first opportunity to experience these enhancements as the Penguins host preseason hockey games this week before they open their 19th season at Mohegan Sun Arena on October 7th.

Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza is owned by the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority, a government body appointed by Luzerne County. The arena is managed by SMG, the world leader in entertainment and sports facilities management with catering and concessions services provided by SAVOR at Mohegan Sun Arena.

A man is in custody after crashing into 7 vehicles on Route 61 Friday morning.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven, the crash occurred just before 11:30am Friday.

Police say the crash occurred as a Ford Focus driven by Jeffrey McAnaney, 28, of Pottsville was travelling southbound on SR61 and struck seven (7) vehicles which were stopped at the traffic light at Arch Street near Pizza Hut.

As McAnaney traveled down the hill from Millcreek Avenue headed towards Arch St., some of the operators of the stopped vehicles began to pull to their respective sides of the roadway in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid impact.

McCananey told Police that he had lost his brakes while leaving St. Clair borough and could not bring his vehicle to a stop prior to plowing into the seven (7) stopped vehicles.

He advised that he drove in the middle of the lanes to try and squeeze through the middle of the vehicles but instead, sideswiped all seven. Nobody reported any injuries, and everyone reported that they were wearing their seatbelt.

McCananey was subsequently taken into custody for a drug related DUI.

The Pottsville Police also assisted at the scene.

Two Schuylkill County School Districts Receive Career Readiness Mini-Grants

Governor Tom Wolf, the Department of Labor & Industry (L&I), and Team Pennsylvania announced earlier this week that $270,000 in Career Readiness Mini-Grants have been awarded to 64 school districts from across the commonwealth including 2 from Schuylkill County.

The grants support an assortment of activities for students to learn about career opportunities, and to build stronger connections between schools and employers.

“These grants will enhance the collaborative efforts between the Pennsylvania education and workforce development systems, and help to create the bridge between school and real-world workplace experiences,” Governor Wolf said. “We need to allow our students to explore their career options early, so that they are prepared and informed as they transition into the workforce and post-secondary education.”

L&I awarded a grant to Team Pennsylvania in June to fund career-readiness projects of up to $10,000 each.

From Schuylkill County, the North Schuylkill and Saint Clair School Districts received the grant.

“Labor & Industry is proud to fund and support these education-oriented career readiness projects,” said L&I Acting Secretary Jerry Oleksiak. “These grants allow students to experience different industries in Pennsylvania, including high-demand industries with good, family-sustaining wages. Preparing our students for jobs that pay is a win-win for Pennsylvania’s economy.”

Team Pennsylvania partnered with the Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units (PAIU) and Intermediate Units (IUs) across the state to review applications and select grantees, awarding $30,000 in each of the nine regions in the commonwealth.

“This project perfectly aligns with our organizational principles of partnership and ensuring Pennsylvania’s economic prosperity,” said Ryan C. Unger, President & CEO of Team Pennsylvania.

“Pennsylvania’s 29 Intermediate Units are positioned to facilitate partnerships and connect schools throughout Pennsylvania to the programs and resources needed to support robust Career Awareness and Readiness activities that will engage students in developing meaningful career dreams that can become a reality,” said Dr. Linda Hippert, Executive Director of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.

The project will work to promote collaboration between the K-12 system and the workforce system on a micro-level. Successful applicants are required to work with their local Workforce Development Boards and base their work on regional labor market needs.

The career readiness activities funded by the mini-grants include:
  • Placing students in work-based learning experiences, apprenticeships, pre-apprenticeships, and other opportunities that help students see the connection between the classroom and their future workplaces;
  • Furthering career awareness and exploration programs for students at all grade levels;
  • Designing classroom instruction that will ensure students are prepared to pursue careers in high-demand, well-paying occupations; and
  • Building partnerships between schools and businesses to create future career readiness opportunities for more students.

These career-readiness activities were created in support of the Department of Education’s initiative of expanding options for students to demonstrate their readiness for college, high-demand industries, or the military. The career readiness mini-grant project will identify best practices to share and replicate throughout the commonwealth.

Team Pennsylvania is a non-partisan, charitable, non-profit created in 1997 to bring government and private sector leaders together for the betterment of Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units works to ensure the strength of individual intermediate units, and to strengthen the system of intermediate units. IUs serve as liaisons between local schools and the Department of Education. Every year, more than 175,000 students and 75,000 educators and adults receive services from one of Pennsylvania’s twenty-nine intermediate units.

A complete list of school districts that were awarded the mini-grant can be found on the Team Pennsylvania website at www.teampa.com/minigrantawardees.
