Coal Cracker Kids is scheduled to receive a fresh coat of exterior paint on Saturday and Sunday, September 9 and 10, from 9 am to 5 pm, at its new headquarters, the former Mahanoy City Lumber and Supply Company at 435 West Centre Street in Mahanoy City.

The event is funded in part by a grant provided by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, BEHR, and The Home Depot through Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful's Fresh Paint Days Pennsylvania Program.

The program is designed to provide community groups with paint and painting supplies enabling them to renew a community structure in need into something beautiful through the application of fresh paint and a lot of elbow grease.

Coal Cracker Kids is a 501(c)(3) public charity with a mission to empower young people of Pennsylvania’s Anthracite Coal Region through youth-led projects that explore sense of place and promote professional development. Since 2014, it has published Coal Cracker Youth-led News, a quarterly print & online media outlet for young people ages 12 though 18.

Volunteer help is needed throughout the Fresh Paint Days weekend September 9 and 10. People of all ages are welcome to participate by sharing skills like sanding, scraping, painting, and basic carpentry. Gifts of funding or refreshments are also needed to support the project.

Painting supplies will be provided. Street parking is available near the painting site, but volunteers should be mindful of neighbors and local businesses.

Interested Fresh Paint Days volunteers should register with Coal Cracker Kids prior to September 9 and 10 by visiting CoalCrackerKids.org or calling 570-647-6407.

In case of rain on the event weekend, Coal Cracker Kids Fresh Paint Days will be moved to the following weekend, September 16 and 17.

“We are so grateful for this opportunity to improve our building and to make an immediate visual difference in our neighborhood,” says Krista Gromalski, President of Coal Cracker Kids. “The way a community looks is a reflection of its pride. A community that is well cared for provides a safer environment, offers a better quality of life and inspires residents to participate in community life.”

Since taking ownership of the Mahanoy City Lumber and Supply Company in January 2017, the self-initiated clean-up efforts of Coal Cracker Kids’ young participants have included removal of

tarps from the front windows; installment of large, colorful hand-made signs; removal of trash and debris from the building’s interior; and cleaning and organizing their office space.

"At BEHR, we believe in doing the right thing and we're on a mission to make a difference in the communities where we reside,” said Drew Hatcher, Contract Management Director at Behr Paint. “Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is an amazing organization and everyone in the community is enriched by their Fresh Paint Days efforts. We are proud to once again be partnering with them to help beautify communities across the state."

"Through our partnership with BEHR and The Home Depot, Fresh Paint Days Pennsylvania empowers community groups to take a direct role in community revitalization efforts," explains Shannon Reiter, President of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. "Community revitalization is so critical but resources are limited. The Fresh Paint Days PA Program provides resources as an impetus to improve our communities one structure at a time. It is a valuable program and I want to encourage community groups in Pennsylvania to take full advantage of this great opportunity."

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced Thursday that four Schuylkill County residents were indicted on August 8, 2017, by a federal grand jury for allegedly participating in a methamphetamine trafficking conspiracy from July 2016 through May 2017.

According to United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, the indictment alleges that Anibal Luis Rodriguez a/k/a “Lou,” age 26, of Pottsville, Malcom Wilfong a/k/a “Sleep,” age 26, of Pottsville, David Castro a/k/a “D,” age 27, of Pottsville, and Laverne Schaeffer, age 45, of Schuylkill Haven, conspired to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The indictment further alleges that Rodriguez, Wilfong, and Castro were involved in distributing more than 500 grams of methamphetamine. Schaeffer is alleged to have distributed more than 50 grams of methamphetamine.

Rodriguez and Castro are also charged with five additional counts of distributing methamphetamine. Wilfong is also charged with an additional count of distributing methamphetamine.

The indictment also seeks to forfeit the residence and property of Laverne Schaeffer in Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania.

The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Shenandoah Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa is prosecuting the case.

Indictments and Criminal Informations are only allegations. All persons charged are presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court.

A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

The maximum penalty under federal law for conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of methamphetamine is life imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine. There is also a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years for that offense. The maximum penalty under federal law for conspiracy to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine is 40 years in prison. There is a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison for that charge. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the Judge is also required to consider and weigh a number of factors, including the nature, circumstances and seriousness of the offense; the history and characteristics of the defendant; and the need to punish the defendant, protect the public and provide for the defendant's educational, vocational and medical needs. For these reasons, the statutory maximum penalty for the offense is not an accurate indicator of the potential sentence for a specific defendant.

Attorney General Shapiro Announces Breakup of $1 Million Fox Drug Ring in Luzerne County

$

Attorney General Josh Shapiro today announced the break-up of a drug ring that sold $1 million in heroin and crack cocaine in Wilkes Barre and Luzerne County over the last year.

Fourteen people were charged with drug dealing in a law enforcement investigation called “Operation Outfoxed.”

Brian “Fox” Francis, 35, of N. Hancock Street, Wilkes-Barre, was the main drug dealer supplying heroin and crack cocaine he obtained from New York City for sale in Wilkes Barre and Luzerne County. Enlisting a ring of conspirator dealers, Francis set up an extensive drug network that operated out of motels throughout Wilkes Barre and local residences as well.

“The Fox drug ring sold more than $1 million in heroin and crack cocaine in Luzerne County,” Attorney General Shapiro said at a news conference today at the Luzerne County Courthouse. “They were selling $3,000 worth of drugs every day for more than a year – pushing their poisons into Wilkes Barre. The people of Luzerne County are fed up with this epidemic. We hear you, and we’re taking action. Today we shut down the Fox drug ring.”

Collaborating with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, Bureau of Narcotics investigators first received tips about Brian Francis last April. By September, investigators were making controlled drug buys from Francis and his gang of dealers. In June, the Office of Attorney General obtained court approval for a wiretap on Francis and his cohort of drug dealers. The surveillance obtained evidence of drug sales and planned trips to New York City to re-stock their supply of heroin and crack cocaine for sale in Wilkes Barre.

The network of dealers led by Francis used coded language to communicate by phone and text, calling heroin “movies” and crack cocaine “cookies” or “candy.”

Francis is charged with corrupt organizations – a first-degree felony, criminal conspiracy to delivery cocaine and heroin and manufacture with intent to deliver controlled substances.

Other defendants are charged with manufacture, delivery, or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance and related charges:
  • Derrick Bynum, 34, of Linden Blvd, Brooklyn, NY
  • Karon “Mad Dog” Varick, 25, of Farragut Rd, Brooklyn, NY
  • Jordan “Rambo” or “Scrams” Stacy, 21, of N. Franklin St, Wilkes-Barre
  • Andrew Pope, 39, of Logan St, Wilkes-Barre
  • Brian “Dread” Jackson, 53, of Travel Lodge Motel, Wilkes-Barre
  • John “Domo” Doe, Age and Address Unknown
  • Ras “Dollar” Johnson, 20, of S. Hancock St, Wilkes-Barre
  • Kyle Patterson, 23, of Main St, Avoca
  • Maura Kathio, 28, of Stout St, Yatesville
  • Angela Thomas, 43, of N. Walnut St, Luzerne
Three defendants were charged with criminal conspiracy:
  • Taurean Kemp, 33, Address Unknown
  • Raheem “Free” Richardson, 30, of Hillside Ave, Edwardsville
  • Christopher Mark, 32, of Spring St, Wilkes-Barre
In addition to the Office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Narcotics Investigation, “Operation Outfoxed” involved the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office and County Detectives, FBI’s Safe Street Task Force, DEA, Pennsylvania State Police, Luzerne County Drug Task Force, Plains Township Police, Wilkes-Barre Police, Edwardsville Police, Kingston Police, Luzerne Police and the Luzerne Sheriffs’ Office.

Attorney General Shapiro praised the extensive law enforcement collaboration in this investigation. “We took down a major drug trafficking organization thanks to the strong collaboration between many partnering agencies. Law enforcement collaboration helps make our communities safer. We hear the people of Wilkes Barre and Luzerne County, and we’re doing whatever it takes to get these drug dealers and their poisons out of northeast Pennsylvania.”

Deputy Attorney General William Abraham will prosecute the cases.

On Friday Night, alumni from Shenandoah Valley and Mahanoy Area rekindled their old rivalry on the football field.

The Alumni Game, which was organized by Alumni Football USA kicked off at 7:00pm at Shenandoah Valley's Memorial Stadium.

In total 51 competed, with 27 players for Shenandoah Valley and 24 for Mahanoy Area.  The full contact game felt just like a regular Friday night as crowds arrived at the stadium.  A heavy downpour during the 2nd Quarter didn't stop the action.

The game was back and forth most of the game and a late drive in the 4th quarter by Shenandoah Valley almost tied the game but Mahanoy Area pulled out the win 14-7.

After the game, players from both sides met on the 50 yard line where they shook hands, laughed, and made jokes about playing again next year and ended the game with a prayer.
