Von Dohren, Mammana, Sites, and Geeesaman Take the Checkers at Big Diamond on Sunday

With Friday's weather once again not cooperating, Big Diamond Speedway was forced to use their Sunday rain date to finally get in a show.

A beautiful sun-drenched day presented itself on Sunday for the cars and stars of the Schuylkill County to put on a show for the fans and when the final checkered flag waved on the night taking the big wins were Craig Von Dohren in the 358 Modifieds. The U.S.S. Achey Sportsman win went to Mike Mammana in a hard-fought battle with points leader Matt Stangle. Over in the No Sweat Service Group Street Stock it was Joey Geesaman and in the No Savage 61 Road Runners Kody Sites was your repeat winner.

In the headline Sheet and Metal Service 358 Modified division it was the birthday boy Craig Von Dohren putting on a late race charge up on the extreme outside to take the win.

Skylar Sheriff and Justin Grim brought the field to the green flag with Grim grabbing the lead on the start. Grim would go on to lead the first few laps before Duane Howard would ascend to the lead on lap five. Howard's lead would be short lived as Rick Laubach would get by Howard on a lap seven restart to grab the top spot. Laubach would continue to pace the field as all eyes were on the Searock Fabrications #26 of Ryan Godown who was charging hard from his 17th starting spot. Godown worked his way past Howard for 2nd and was setting his sights on Laubach when his good run came to an end as he coasted to the pits on lap 19 with what turned out to be a broken rocker arm in the motor. With the action out front pretty calm, Craig Von Dohren was starting to make a charge to the front. Von Dohren who usually runs the bottom at Big Diamond had changed his line and was up on and above the cushion as he put on a late race charge to get to the front. CVD made quick work of Jeff Strunk, Howard and Billy Pauch Jr to move into 2nd when the caution came out on lap 21. On the ensuing restart CVD blasted to the lead on the outside of Laubach to take the lead. CVD would go on to lead the remaining laps to take career win #88 ironically driving the Dave Dissinger #88X. The win further solidified CVD lead in the battle for the track championship. Rick Laubach would hold for second with Billy Pauch Jr, Duane Howard and Jeff Strunk completing the top five.

After multiple attempts to get the U.S.S. Achey Sportsman race started the field was forced to go single file to get the Feature going. CVD car owner Dave Dissinger took the lead on the start. Dissinger would continue to lead as 14th place starter Mike Mammana was making moves through the field. A restart on lap 14 was the break Mammana needed as he was able to power by Dissinger to take the lead. Mammana would go on to lead the remainder of the race holding off a strong challenge from points leader Matt Stangle to take the win. Following Mammana and Stangle across the line were Dave Dissinger, Chuck Fayash and Jordan Henn

In the street stock division Joey Geesaman survived an early race battle with Joey Brennan, Elvin Brennan, Heller and Tripp to take the win. Geesaman would grab the lead on a lap 11 restart after a tangle among the Brennan's brought out the yellow. Geesaman would take the win over Chris Derr, Elvin Brennan III, Joey Brennan and Eric Tripp

The road runner division would once again see Kody Sites dominate the race as he took the lead on lap five and was never headed after that. Sites took the win over Terry Kramer, Jim Kost, Devin Trexler and Kyle Wingler. Sites would also win the one on one match races on the night.

Headframe Dedicated at the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine Site

On Monday, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) visited the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine tourism site to dedicate a new addition that represents a big piece of regional history: a 35-foot headframe from a local coal mine.
“This project enhances the educational experience at Pioneer Tunnel and adds an asset to the local tourism economy, while providing a lasting reminder of the integral role anthracite mining plays in northeast Pennsylvania,” said John Stefanko, DEP Deputy Secretary for Active and Abandoned Mine Operations.

The headframe once stood at Bowman’s shaft at North Mahanoy Colliery, where hundreds of local workers passed under it to enter the mine during operations from the mid-1850s to 1931.

The work on the abandoned mine land near the Pioneer Tunnel, completed in 2015, included salvaging the headframe; backfilling a 165-foot-deep mine shaft near several homes; and removing an old pump house, a deteriorated reinforced concrete electrical house and various concrete foundations. The site was regraded and revegetated.

Also speaking at Monday's dedication were Dave Hamilton (Office of Surfrace Mining and Enforcement), Conrad Falvello (Representative for Congressman Barletta), Schuylkill County Commission Frank Staudenmeier, Pennsylvania State Representative Neal Goodman, Ed Wytovich (Pioneer Tunnel), Duane Feagley (Executive Director of PA Anthracite Council), Dave A Lucas (Retired Miner).

DEP awarded funding through the 2016 Abandoned Mine Land Pilot Program to Pioneer Tunnel to refurbish and erect the headframe at the tourism site.

Project partners include the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) at the U.S. Department of Interior; Ashland Borough; Ashland Community Enterprises; Keystone Anthracite; Pagnotti Enterprises; Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum; Pioneer Tunnel Group; and Schuylkill County.

The OSMRE-funded Abandoned Mine Land Pilot Program includes 14 projects statewide targeted to areas where mine reclamation has strong potential for community and economic gain as well as environmental benefits.

The Fayash Memorial Race for the Sportsman Modifieds highlights this Friday’s action at Big Diamond Speedway

$

This Friday night at the Schuykill County oval it will be the U.S.S. Achey Sportsman Modifieds headlining the action as they compete in the “Fayash Memorial” race.

The special race will pay $1,570 to the winner with $157 just to take the green. Matt Stangle and last week’s winner Mike Mammana have to be considered the favorites to battle it out for the big prize but drivers such as Doug Hendricks, Shawn Light along with a host of other drivers will be looking to take home the big money as well. Look for a few invaders to come in and try to steal the big money away from the track regulars.

After what seems like an eternity the Sheet and Metal Service 358 Modifieds finally returned to action last week with point’s leader Craig Von Dohren taking the win and extending his points lead over the rest of the championship contenders. Now is a good time for the 358 Modifieds to start tuning their cars for the upcoming money races hitting the track in the upcoming weeks. After this Friday’s show on August 25th will be the “Prelude to the Coalcracker” which will be 40 laps and pay a cool $4,600 to the winner. The season will then close out with the biggest race of the year for the Modifieds on Sunday September 3rd with the running of the $10,000 to win “Jack Rich” Coalcracker 72.

Also on the racing card for the evening are the Savage 61 Road Runners along with the No Sweat Service Group Street Stocks. As an added bonus on the night there will also be an Enduro Dash 50 plus the Kim’s Kreations Powder Puff Race. The track has also designated the night as “Pink Out” night, so everyone please wear something pink!

As always, the gates open on Friday night at 5:30pm with warm-ups beginning at 7:30pm. General admission for Friday night’s show is $20.00, senior admission is $18.00 and as usual kids under 12 and active military with ID are admitted free.

*Rain date for this show is Sunday August 20th. Heats will start one half hour earlier on Sunday at 7:00pm.

Schuylkill County boy has his dream come true at Knoebels Amusement Resort.

Tanner Quinn of Ringtown, loves Knoebels. He and his family spend many summer days walking the park and riding many of the rides at the popular amusement resort, located in Elysburg. Because of Tanner's love of the park, his mom, Heidi Quinn, contacted Knoebels through social media, to express Tanner's admiration of the Grand Carousel.

Heidi Quinn told Knoebels that it would mean the world to Tanner, if he could be an honorary Knoebels member.

Staff at Knoebels wanted to do the best they could to help make an incredible memory for Tanner, so after speaking with Ride Operations, they came up with what they hoped would be a great experience.

Tanner's special day came on Friday, August 4th, 2017, when Knoebels invited Tanner to be a part of their Grand Carousel Team.

His first official task was to get him his own team member shirt and "Ride Operations" name tag.

Tanner Getting His Shirt and
Ride Operations Name Tag
Then after some brief instructions, it was time for Tanner to "get to work".

The team showed him around, prepped him for his duties, which included collection of carousel rings and manning the brass ring dispenser.

Stacy Ososkie, Public Relations Director for Knoebels, said "Learning how much our carousel meant to him warmed our hearts. We were honored to meet Tanner and his family, and hope that it was a day they will never forget!"

After the day ended, Heidi Quinn reflected on Tanner's special day.
"It was an absolutely amazing experience for Tanner and our entire family. It is a memory we will treasure for for years to come. We have always loved Knoebels, but knowing how they went above and beyond to fulfill a dream for a little boy makes us love them even more. They truly put people first, and we will be forever grateful." .

The future of the Schuylkill Mall property has officially been revealed.

On Wednesday morning, Vice President of the Schuylkill County Economic Development, Brian Hansbury, presented a plan to the county commissioners on behalf of the owners of the Schuylkill Mall property, Northpoint Development.

The plan given by Hansbury was to enact LERTA, Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance.  LERTA allows taxing authorities to exempt new construction in deteriorated areas of economically depressed communities and improvements to certain deteriorated industrial, commercial and other business property.

The plan would give the owners a tax break of 50 percent over 10 years to increase the value of the property.

Part of the plan given by Hansbury would have the mall demolished by the end of 2017.  Demolition would begin on the Sears/Bon Ton end of the mall, leaving the movie theater time to operate through the busy holiday season.

McDonalds and Big Lots are on the same parcel property but will stay and not be demolished.  Cracker Barrel and Holiday are reported to be on their own parcels and will remain open.

The mall would be completely demolition by the end of the winter and new construction of two new warehouses on the property that would be completed by the end of the summer of 2018.

The new buildings will be 890,000 square feet and 360,000 square feet, and are said to be capable of creating a minimum of 830 jobs.

The meeting with Commissioners on Wednesday was a work session and an official vote by the commissioners is planned for next Wednesday.  St. Clair School District and New Castle Township have already voted and approved the project.

More details in a full story later Wednesday.

On Wednesday morning, the plan was revealed to demolish the Schuylkill Mall and develop an industrial park.

During a work meeting with the Schuylkill County Commissioners, Brian Hansbury, the Vice President of Schuylkill Economic Development, proposed a plan on behalf of Northpoint Development.

The plan was part of a presentation that Hansbury presented to commissioners to enact LERTA on three mall property parcels.

LERTA, Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance, allows taxing authorities to exempt new construction in deteriorated areas of economically depressed communities and improvements to certain deteriorated industrial, commercial and other business property.

The plan would give the property owners a tax break of 50 percent over 10 years to increase the value of the property.

The estimated current value of the mall property is roughly over $2,000,000 but after 10 years of development, the estimated property value will be over $20,000,000.

Schuylkill County, New Castle Township, and the St. Clair School District all receive tax revenue from the mall property.  According to the plan proposed, each would see an increase of the follow compared to it's current revenue.

  • New Castle Township
    • Current:  $47,096.53
    • After 10 years with LERTA:  $217,941
  • St. Clair School District
    • Current:  $146,081.13
    • After 10 years with LERTA:  $675,995
  • Schuylkill County
    • Current:  $61,348.34
    • After 10 year with LERTA:  $1,177,826.40
Saint Clair School District and New Castle Township have already approved LERTA.

The official vote by the Schuylkill County Commissioners is expected next Wednesday, August 23rd, during their regular meeting.

Part of the plan given by Hansbury would have the mall demolished by the end of 2017.  Demolition would begin on the Sears/Bon Ton end of the mall, leaving the movie theater time to operate through the busy holiday season.

The mall would be completely demolition by the end of the winter and new construction of two new warehouses on the property that would be completed by the end of the summer of 2018.

The new warehouses will be 890,000 square feet and 360,000 square feet, and are said to be capable of creating a minimum of 830 jobs.

Occupants of the leases have not been determined.
