During a Pottsville Parking Authority Meeting Friday, it was announced that Dick Yuengling, owner of  Yuengling Brewery, would be making a substantial donation for a new parking deck.

Pottsville City Mayor James Muldowney made the announcement that Dick Yuengling would donate up to $2.8 Million for the replacement project of the Mahantongo Parking Deck.

In late 2016, the old parking deck's structure was found to be deteriorating and was deemed unsafe.

During the announcement Friday, Mayor Muldowney stated that donation is the largest in the city's 211 history.

"Our family has been in Pottsville for 188 years. It’s the home of Yuengling, America’s Oldest Brewery. I’m very passionate about preserving our city and its rich history. The current garage that is in need of repair presented my daughters and I with an opportunity to do something that felt right for the entire community. This donation will offer a convenient parking option for local businesses, patrons and visitors. We’re excited to partner with the city, local businesses and the community to make Pottsville a better place to work, live and visit." said Dick Yuengling.

When we asked Yuengling on what he thought about giving the largest donation in the city's history, "I am a big believer in Pottsville’s potential."

Due to the unprecedented amount of Friday night rainouts this season, promoter Jake Smulley has indicated that the track will utilize Sunday nights as rain dates for the remainder of the 2017 season starting with this week’s events.

With the current season winding down quickly culminating the annual Coal Cracker 72 on Sunday Sept 3rd, the track has decided they needed to do this for the teams and the fans of the speedway.

This Friday night the mighty URC Sprint cars will make another appearance at the track. The URC sprints always put on a good show up in “God’s Country” and this Friday night should be no exception.

Also on hand this Friday night will be the Steel and Metal Services 358 Modifieds along with the Savage 61 Roadrunners and the No Sweat Service Group Street Stocks. The Roadrunners will also take part in their rescheduled Pro Shine Challenge races. The U.S.S. Achey Sportsman division will be given the week off unless the Sunday rain date is used (see below).

The Speedway will also present its “Hunt the Giant” night which was previously scheduled last Friday night. The track will have Free Ice Cream (while supplies last) along with Live Music, Free Popcorn, Giveaways and a Kids Victory Lane Contest.

As always, the gates open on Friday night at 5:30pm with warm-ups beginning at 7:30pm. General admission for Friday night’s show is $23.00 and as usual kids under 12 and active military with ID are admitted free.

*Rain date for this show is Sunday August 13th. If the rain date is needed, the URC Sprint cars will not be on the card and the U.S.S. Achey Sportsman Modifieds will be added. Heats will start one half hour earlier on Sunday at 7:00pm.

Man Wanted For Giving a False ID to Law Enforcement and Hindering Apprehension

A man is wanted in Schuylkill County on charges of giving false identification to law enforcement and hindering apprehension.
According to Orwigsburg Police, on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 the Orwigsburg Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of 300 Grove Street for a number traffic violations.

The vehicle, which was operated by a juvenile with a valid Pennsylvania learner's permit, was also occupied by five additional people, including the front seat passenger who did not have a valid driver’s license and was wanted on a non-extraditable warrant out of the state of Florida.

Upon attempting to identify the remaining occupants of the vehicle to verify whether or not any had a valid driver's license in order to lawfully accompany the juvenile driver, another male occupant identified himself by providing his name, date of birth, and social security number because he did not possess an identification card.

The information this man provided was later found to be that of his own brother.

Roberto Mehmeti, 37, of New Ringgold,  identified by the investigating officer with the assistance of the Pennsylvania Justice Network, provided this false information to avoid apprehension on an active bench warrant out of Carbon County.

Mehmeti is now facing charges for providing false ID to law enforcement and identity theft. A warrant has been issued for his arrest on these charges as well.

Deanna Leibowitz, who is married to and was seated next to Mehmeti in the vehicle, admitted that she knew Mehmeti provided a false name, date of birth, and social security number; however, made no attempt to reveal his true identity and is therefore facing a single charge of hindering apprehension.

At a press conference Tuesday morning, Hersheypark announced that they will be building not one but two new water rides for the 2018 season.

Breakers Edge Water Coaster and Whitecap Racer are both scheduled to debut Memorial Day weekend of 2018.

Breakers Edge Water Coaster will be the world's first HydroMAGNETIC water coaster with flying saucer turns and the 14th coaster at Hersheypark.  The four-person inline raft gives families a bobsled ride feeling as gravity drops and smooth Linear Induction Motors power guests up and down hills and turns. This water coaster has an estimated hourly ride capacity of 600 guests and a ride time of about one minute.

Whitecap Racer will be the world’s longest mat racer and will take guests 70 feet high as they race to the finish in six side-by-side tunnels to the bottom. Each rider speeds through two tight 360-degree loops, while open racing lanes with low separator lanes allow racers to see and hear each other as they challenge each other using a slider timing system.

The new attractions will be located between Shoreline Sprayground attraction and Intercoastal Waterway lazy river.

No rides currently at the park will be removed to make room for the new rides.
