The Wolf Administration announced today work is scheduled to begin next week on a $2 million project to repair and resurface Route 443 (Suedberg Road) in Pine Grove Township, Schuylkill County.

“This roadway is used by thousands of motorists each day, and will soon be smoother because of PennDOT’s investment,” Governor Tom Wolf said.

Route 443 will be milled and resurfaced between Peach Street and the Lebanon County line. This section of Route 443 has an average daily traffic volume that varies between 1,824 and 5,423 vehicles. The $2,086,977 project is financed with 100 percent state funds from Act 89, Pennsylvania’s Transportation Plan.

Starting Monday (June 26) and lasting throughout the duration of the project, motorists should be alert for lane restrictions weekdays between the hours of 6:30 AM and 4:30 PM. Updates will be provided whenever schedules change.

Under this improvement project, the contractor will mill off the existing roadway surface and repave the state highways with new asphalt. The new pavement will seal the roadways and provide motorists with a smoother riding surface. The project also includes updating guiderail and repairing drainage
inlets.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, PA is the general contractor on the project, which is expected to be complete in October.

For more information on projects occurring or being bid this year, those made possible by or accelerated by Act 89, or those on the department’s Four and Twelve Year Plans, visit www.projects.penndot.gov.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com.

511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 825 traffic cameras.

Blown Roadwork Sign Leads to Fuel Spill

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, a blown sign caused an accident on Interstate 81 on Wednesday, June 21st.

Police say Erik Hultquist, of Coopersburg, PA and Rasul Dursunov, of Missouri City, TX, were travelling southbound in separate vehicles on Interstate 81 in New Castle Township.

Hultquist was driving a Ford F-150 while Dursunov was driving a Volvo tractor trailer.

Hultquist was hauling a roadwork sign when it came loose and a section of the frame fell to on the highway.

Dursunov who was travelling behind Hultquist drove over the metal frame  when one of the saddlebag diesel full tanks ruptured spilling between 200-250 gallons of diesel fuel on to the roadway and should of the road.

Hultquist initially stopped to help with cleanup but left the scene without providing any of the required identification to authorities.

Schuylkill Mall Statue Finds New Home at Knoebels

If you've been to Knoebels' recently, you may have noticed a little bit of Schuylkill County near the Mine Museum.

Since the mall’s opening in 1980, a solid bronze statue has stood as a tribute to coal miners everywhere, but later this year, the Schuylkill Mall will be closing.

Thanks to one individual, the Coal Miner's Statue that was located in the mall has a new home.

According to Stacy Ososkie, Public Relations Director for Knoebels', Buddy Knoebel received a phone call from Dana Baker, marketing director for Schuylkill Mall in Frackville.

With the impending closure of the shopping facility, Dana wanted to ensure that the statue could be appreciated and enjoyed for years to come.

Ososkie said the connection was obvious: Schuylkill Mall is a family mall, and Knoebels is a family park.

Baker was happy to learn that not only was Buddy already aware of the statue and had great interest in it, but he also knew the perfect location where it could be enjoyed.

Knoebels’ Anthracite Mine Museum is a tribute to the anthracite coal mining industry and our local community. It is open free of charge to Knoebels' 1.5 million annual visitors.

Knoebels team members visited the mall to transport the statue to its new home, and it is already being admired by park visitors as they approach the museum.

Governor Wolf Signs "Stolen Valor" Bill into Law

Governor Tom Wolf today signed the so-called stolen valor bill into law, protecting benefits for Pennsylvania veterans.

Act 9, House Bill 168, was introduced by Representative Rick Saccone, and prohibits the fraudulent representation of military service or military decorations to obtain money, property, or other benefits.

“This new law makes it a crime to impersonate a soldier, a veteran of the armed services, or a recipient of a service medal or decoration in order to gain access to benefits, resources, or job opportunities that we set aside specifically for those who have heroically served our country,” Governor Wolf said. “This legislation is incredibly important because Pennsylvania has the fourth-largest veteran population in the country and it is our duty to be certain that benefits for those veterans are available to those who have earned them.”

“An individual commits this crime if they intend to benefit by fraudulently presenting themselves as a member of the armed serves and/or the recipient of a military award,” Rep. Saccone said. “Criminalized behavior would range from lying to receive veteran or health care benefits to fraudulently obtaining preference in a government contract or a job reserved for a veteran.”

Senator Tony Williams introduced stolen valor legislation in a previous legislative session.
