Police Looking for Man Wanted for Assault
A man is wanted by police for an assault earlier this month.
According to Pottsville Police, on Sunday, June 18, 2017 around 4:50pm, a 37 year old Pottsville woman contacted the Police to report that her husband, Braxton Moore, 34, had assaulted her throughout the day at 480 N. Claude A Lord Blvd., the Pottsville Motor Inn in Room 104.
The woman told officers that an argument between the two had led to Moore placing his hand over her throat, causing her to lose consciousness several times. Moore also reportedly struck the victim in the face with his hand, wrapped a sheet around her neck, used a belt to strike her back and legs, and drug her by the hair to the bathroom and began splashing water on her.
Police observed multiple injuries on the woman consistent with the report, which included: a red mark about two inches long on her neck, a bruise on her right check and one directly under her right eye, and a red mark on her eye ball.
Moore had left the area prior to police being notified and was last known to be in the Port Carbon area.
Patrolman Joel Methven prepared a criminal complaint charging Moore with Strangulation, Domestic Violence, Simple Assault, and Recklessly Endangering Another Person.

PA Senate Passes Bill to Advance Legislation that Would Allow Trained School Workers to Carry Guns on School Grounds
The Pennsylvania Senate today approved Senate Bill 383, legislation introduced by Senator Don White that would give school boards the option of allowing licensed and trained staff to carry firearms on school property.
SB 383, which was approved by a 28-22 bipartisan vote, would allow school personnel to have access to firearms in school safety zones if school districts establish proper guidelines and they are licensed to carry a concealed firearm and have met certain training requirements in the use and handling of firearms in a program approved by the State Police.
“Time is a critical element when a violent incident occurs in a school. Many schools in rural areas rely on State Police coverage, which means response times can vary. Senate Bill 383 gives trained school personnel the opportunity to serve as first responders,” said Senator White. “If it becomes law, I will sleep better at night knowing our school districts have more tools at their disposal to fight the unspeakable evil that causes a few in our society to seek to harm our children.”
The bill was amended on Tuesday to require individuals to pass a psychological examination before they would be entrusted with possessing a firearm in school. The amendment also improved transparency by requiring school boards to notify the local hospital and students’ families when they give personnel permission to access firearms in school. It also requires school boards to file a comprehensive firearm safety plan with the law enforcement agency having jurisdiction over the school.
“Taken together, these changes make this a stronger bill and I thank all of my colleagues for their input and support as this process has moved forward,” said Senator White.
The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.
“Since I first introduced this proposal, there has been much discussion about what the measure does and how it relates to current Pennsylvania law,” Senator White said. “To be clear, this bill is not about the Second Amendment. It’s about permitting the 500 school districts of this Commonwealth to have greater choices when it comes to protecting our most precious resource – our children.”
Senator White said the measure was proposed to him by Mark Zilinskas, a mathematics teacher with the Indiana Area School District, following a stabbing in the nearby Franklin Regional School District in April 2014.

Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Granted Permits
The Pennsylvania Department of Health today granted 27 dispensary permits for medical marijuana dispensaries.
The permittees will now have six months in which to become operational, before they can begin dispensing medical marijuana.
“This has been a highly competitive process and the department received hundreds of quality applications,” said John Collins, Director of the Office of Medical Marijuana. “Once this program is fully operational, patients with serious medical conditions will have locations throughout the commonwealth where they can purchase medication to help in their treatment. We remain on track to provide medication to patients in 2018.”
There will be a total of 52 dispensaries located throughout the commonwealth. Each of the 27 dispensary permit holders is eligible to open a total of three locations. Some dispensary permit holders have opted not to open all eligible locations at this time. A complete list of locations is available on the Department of Health website at www.health.pa.gov .

Concrete Repairs to Start Next Week on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today concrete repair work is scheduled to begin on Interstate 81 north in Schuylkill County.
Beginning July 9, and lasting approximately eight weeks, motorists can expect single lane conditions from 7 PM on Sundays through 12 PM on Thursdays on I-81 north between the Lebanon County line and Exit 104 (PA 125) in Pine Grove and Tremont townships. These restrictions will allow crews to safely repair sections of recently placed concrete that developed premature cracks.
“Restricting a lane again on I-81 north is unfortunate,” District Executive Michael W. Rebert said. “But we need to ensure the concrete is repaired immediately, and we apologize for the inconvenience to the motoring public.”
The cracks started forming this past winter on the newly rehabilitated section of I-81 north. Engineers believe the cracks formed due to unanticipated rigidity of the shoulders, creating a clamping effect that placed a high amount of stress on the concrete travel lanes during freeze cycles.
Work began in June 2015 to improve this section of I-81 north and south, and was originally scheduled to be complete this past spring. The project includes placing an unbonded concrete overlay, interchange improvements at Exits 100 (PA 443) and 104 (PA 125), guiderail updates, signage updates, new pavement markings, brush/tree cutting, and other miscellaneous construction.
Unbonded concrete overlay is a roadway resurfacing process in which a new layer of concrete is poured over an existing layer of pavement with an interlayer between them to break the bond between the two layers. The interlayer allows the layers to expand and contract independently of each other.
Hi-Way Paving, Inc. of Hilliard, OH is the general contractor on the project.
