Francis Joseph Hill, 90, formerly of Tamaqua, PA, died on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 in Hometown, PA. He was the husband of Vivian I. (nee Bachert) Hill to whom he was married 68 years. 

Born in Tuscarora on December 10, 1930, Francis was the son of the late William and Margaret (nee Farrell) Hill. He served in the Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retiring after 20 years of service. Post his military career, Francis was employed by Allied Chemical in Pottsville, PA. He was of the Catholic faith. Francis spent his free hours bowling. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Francis L. Hill and his wife Susan of South Tamaqua and Robert Hill and his wife Brenda of Tuscarora, PA; daughter, Patricia Killian and her husband Ned of Orwigsburg, PA; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and sisters, Margaret Prebulla and her husband George of Weatherly, PA, Regina Heffelfinger of Tamaqua, and Rita Miller of Hometown. Francis was preceded in death by daughters, Susan Johnson, Deborah Chroback, and Amy Einhouse. 

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment with Military Honors will take place at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA.

Marie Flynn
, age 89 years, of Pottsville, died of natural causes Wednesday morning, January 20, 2021 in her home in Pottsville, PA.

Born April 14, 1931, in Gary Indiana, she was the daughter of Louis Sammy of Bitola, Macedonia and Irene Theodoroff Sammy of Pleven, Bulgaria.

For many years, Marie taught music to middle school students in Pottsville. After retiring from the Pottsville Area School District, she became a music instructor at Penn State Schuylkill Campus. She was known to many for singing at civic and entertainment venues in Schuylkill County. She also performed in community opera and theater, even touring Europe in 1994 to sing in A Coal Region Opera: A Pick, A Candle and a Kiss. Marie was an active parishioner at St. John the Baptist Church in Pottsville. In 1997, she organized a trip to Rome for the joint choirs, who performed When the Saints Go Marching In for Pope John Paul II.

During her retirement years, she was a devoted, industrious and talented community leader. She taught music to her beloved children at St. Joseph Center for Special Learning in Pottsville, which included music recitals and presentations. In 2016 she was honored as the St. Joseph’s Ambassador of the Year for her years of service in the classroom and community.

Marie organized several community musical review shows at the Yuengling Mansion on Mahantongo Street in Pottsville, recruiting talented performers from her neighborhood, family and community. She was also a member of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and before the COVID- 19 pandemic restrictions, she had begun writing and rehearsing a musical program to celebrate African American history.

Marie graduated in 1953 from DePaul University in Chicago with bachelor’s and masters degrees in voice and piano performance.

She was married for 61 years to the late William J. Flynn III, the love of her life, who passed away November 3, 2014.

She is survived by her six children, eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Children are: Kathryn M. Igoe and her husband William, Seattle, WA.; Elizabeth S. Flynn and her husband Roy, Cape Cod MA; William J. Flynn IV and his wife Christine, Burke VA; Michael T. Flynn and his wife Therese, Lebanon NJ; Marty L. Flynn and her husband Eric, Chicago IL, and Thomas E. Flynn, Pottsville. She is also survived by her sisters Vera Paczolt of Valparaiso, IN and Rose Yelich and her husband Steve of Walkerton, IN.

Marie will be remembered by her family and friends for her buoyant spirit and her keen sense of humor. Her Christian values were central to her life and were measured by her support of those close to her and her leadership in community service. She was a loyal Notre Dame football fan and took an active interest in current events, local and national. She was an avid, life-long reader, instilling the love of books in all who knew her. Recently she had been reading biographies of American presidents, and she called the collection of her books the Presidential Library.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Baptist RC Church, Pottsville Rev. David Loeper, Off. Interment will be held in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Pottsville. Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Marie took great joy in teaching children with special needs. In honor of her generosity and in lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory would be gratefully received by St. Joseph’s Center for Special Learning, 2075 W Norwegian Street, Pottsville, PA 17901.

Mr. George J. Gaydosh
, age 84, of Morea, died Tuesday night at Lehigh Valley Hospital Schuylkill East Norwegian St., in Pottsville. Born in Mahanoy City, he was the son of the late John and Helen (Roman) Gaydosh. He was a 1954 graduate of Mahanoy City High School. He served with the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. George was a graduate of McCann School of Business, and held a BS degree in Business from Northwestern University.

His working career included being a purchasing agent and assistant manager at Speed Space Corporation in Tamaqua, an employment interviewer with the Office of Employment Security in Pottsville, and foreman with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resource Management in Pottsville working to extinguish the Keely Run mine fire, and the Forestville bank fire. He was also a foreman for Fleetwood Modular Homes, as well as a manager for McKinley Carpets. George also worked for the Public Welfare Department in Tamaqua, and briefly for the Federal Government. He was also a supervisor devoted to the polls every election day for very many years.

In 1972, George received a citation from The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania House of Representatives for his exemplary citizenship and generous service to others during the aftermath of the Hurricane Agnes Flood, which devastated the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area. He worked under the jurisdiction of Governor Milton J. Shapp and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. During that time, he worked in Pittston helping countless people.

He was a life long member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church in Mahanoy City, where he was a member of the church choir, and then served as Cantor for many years. George was also a member of BPOE 695 of Mahanoy City, American Legion Post 74 also of Mahanoy City, and the Greek Catholic Union. He was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, as well as a serving in the officer roles of Deputy Grand Night and Grand Knight.

Preceding him in death were his brothers and sisters Stephen, Nicholas, Michael, Harold and Andrew Kohan, and sisters Mary Litchko and Leona Peel. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, the former Christine Scislaw, a son Gary Gydush and his wife Becky of Pequea, PA, and a daughter Karen Czarniecki and her husband Jim of Orlando, FL.

He is also survived by his grandchildren Tina and Joel Czarniecki, Sandy Cline and her husband Brandon, Justin Czarniecki and his fiancé Raelynn, Kim Long and her husband Andrew, Greg Gydush, Emily Urbanski and her husband Frank, great grandchildren Titus Cline, Andi Long, and Penny Urbanski, as well as nieces and nephews. A private Divine Liturgy with Office of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. James Carroll, with interment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville. David D. Dolores M. Noonan, age 79, of Frackville and formerly of Mahanoy City, died Tuesday night at Broad Mountain Nursing and Rehabilitation in Frackville. 

Born in Mahanoy City she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Getz) Lehigh. She was a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Church in Mahanoy City and had been employed as a secretary for Dr. Setlock. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward F. Noonan in 1994 and 2 brothers Gerald and Jack Lehigh. Survivors include a son Edward and his wife Susan of Catawissa, two grandchildren Brian Noonan and his wife Rachel Anne and Rachel Noonan and her companion Jonathan Cheatdom and a cousin John Ellis. 

A memorial Mass will be announced in the future. David D. Jarrett Funeral Home of Mahanoy City is in charge of arrangements.

Linda G. Dominitis, 63, of Shenandoah, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill E. Norwegian Street.

Services and interment in Annunciation BVM Cemetery, Shenandoah, will be private at the convenience of the family. Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, Shenandoah, is in charge of the arrangements.

Antoinette A. (Cugusi) Opella, 96 a former resident of West Coal Street, Shenandoah passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at the Shenandoah Senior Living Community.

Born in Shenandoah on April 5, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Salvadore and Mary (Rossi) Cugusi.

She worked in the local garment industry and retired from the former Alma Dress Factory, Shenandoah.

Antoinette was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Shenandoah and the former Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Surviving are one son, Edward J. Opella and his wife Rosemary of Mahanoy City; one daughter, Diane Jacobs and her husband Michael of Copperas Cove, Texas; four grandchildren, Nadine Burke, Michele Floyd, Edward A. Opella & Natalie Phy; three great-grandchildren, Christopher Burke, Logan Burke and Landon Phy; three brothers, Louis Cugusi of Mahanoy City, Jack Cugusi of Mahanoy City and Joseph Cugusi and his wife Joann of Frackville; two sisters, Anna Gottstine of Shenandoah and Isabelle Fornito of Connecticut; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding her in death in addition to her parents were her husband, Edward S. Opella on March 8, 1989; two brothers, Carmen and Dominic Cugusi; and three sisters, Jean Benashunas, Mary Hogan and Angelina Tite.

Funeral services and interment will be private at the convenience of the family in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: Thursday, January 21st, 2021

On Thursday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed as of 12:00 a.m., January 21, there were 5,664 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 788,834.
There are 4,882 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19. Of that number, 889 patients are in the intensive care unit with COVID-19. Most of the patients hospitalized are ages 65 or older, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older. 

Statewide, the trend in the 14-day moving average number of hospitalized patients per day has increased by nearly 4,500 since the end of September.

Statewide percent positivity for the week of January 8 – January 14 stood at 12.7%.

As of 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, January 20, there were 260 new deaths reported for a total of 20,128 deaths attributed to COVID-19.

There are 80,719 individuals who have a positive viral antigen test and are considered probable cases and 637 individuals who have a positive serology test and either COVID-19 symptoms or a high-risk exposure.

There are 3,520,836 individuals who have tested negative to date.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 60,597 resident cases of COVID-19, and 11,372 cases among employees, for a total of 71,969 at 1,525 distinct facilities in all 67 counties. Out of our total deaths, 10,137 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities. A county breakdown can be found here.

Approximately 21,862 of our total cases are among health care workers.

In Schuylkill County, on Thursday an increase of 98 new cases was recorded with the total at 10,516 with 6 new deaths being recorded since Wednesday.  The county's death total stands at 311.

Home Destroyed by Fire Early Friday in Butler Township

Fire crews battled a house fire early Friday in Butler Township near Fountain Springs.

At 12:30am, Friday, emergency personnel in Butler Township and Ashland were dispatched to a house fire located at 34 Brown Lane.

Police and fire crews arrived on-scene to find a fully engulfed house fire with entrapment.

One person was reported to have jumped from a roof of the home and was flown to an area hospital with unknown injuries.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Phil Groody Jr. of the Fountain Springs Fire Company, 2 people were unaccounted for.

A tanker task force was called to assist calling in additional water.

The home was a complete loss.  As of this posting there was no word on the 2 unaccounted victims.  A State Police Fire Marshal was called to the scene.

Firefighters and Law Enforcement Still at Scene of Fatal Fire in Butler Township

Butler Township firefighters and law enforcement are still at the scene of a fatal fire that took place early Friday.

At 12:30am, Friday, emergency personnel in Butler Township and Ashland were dispatched to a house fire located at 34 Brown Lane near Fountain Springs.

Police and fire crews arrived on-scene to find a fully engulfed house fire with entrapment.

According to fire officials, one person jumped from a roof of the home and suffered injuries and was flown to an area hospital with unknown injuries.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Phil Groody Jr. of the Fountain Springs Fire Company, 2 people were unaccounted for after the blaze.

The home was a complete loss and the Fountain Springs, Englewood, and Lavelle Fire Companies remained on scene for overhaul.  Just after 7:00am, Friday, one of the victims was pulled from the rubble and was transported from the scene by the Schuylkill County Deputy Coroners office.

As of noon Friday, fire crews were still at the scene assisting multiple State Police Fire Marshals and Butler Township Police dig through the rubble attempting to recover the second victim.

The identity of the victims or a cause has not been made available as of this posting.

Girardville Bar Burglarized Early Thursday; State Police Seek Suspect

The Pennsylvania State Police are looking for a suspect they say burglarized a bar in Girardville early Thursday.

According to State Police Trooper Moyer from the Frackville Barracks, troopers investigated a burglary that occurred at the Guntown Saloon, located at 145 North 2nd Street, in Girardville early Thursday morning.

Police say Steven Robert Melsom, 25, of Girardville is accused of forcibly breaking open the front door of the bar, gaining access, and stealing approximately $120 in cash from the register.

Melsom is described as being 6' 01" tall, weighing approximately 165lbs with brown hair.

Anyone with information on Melsom's whereabouts is asked to contact the Frackville barracks at (570) 874-5300.

UPDATE: Butler Township Police Identify Victims of Friday's Fatal Fire

The Butler Township Police have identified the victims in a fatal fire that occurred early Friday.

According to Chief of Police Edward Tarantelli, on Friday January 22, 2021 at 12:30am emergency personnel were dispatched to a house fire at 34 Brown Lane. 

Upon arrival, officers and responding personnel found a fully involved structure fire. 

Tarantelli confirmed early reports that there four residents within the home at the start of the fire.

Two residents were able to make it out of the home, one uninjured and one was flown to Geisinger Medical Center with unknown injuries after jumping from a roof. 

The remaining residents were unable to escape and were located deceased within the residence. 

The victims were identified as Alison Marie Houser, 29 and her brother Andrew John Charriez, 13. 

State Police Fire Marshals arrived later Friday morning to investigate the cause of the fire. 

Assisting at the scene were Pennsylvania State Police, Ashland Police, Frackville Police, West Mahanoy Twp. Police, Shenandoah Police, Fountain Springs Fire Company, Lavelle Fire Company, Englewood Fire Company, Altamont Fire Company, Washington Fire Co, American Fire Co., local tanker task force, Ashland EMS, Shenandoah EMS, Life Flight 5 and the Schuylkill County Coroners Office.

Man Wanted by Pottsville Police for Death of Infant Arrested in Berks County

A man that was wanted by Pottsville Police was arrested in Berks County on Friday.

According to the Berks County Sheriff's Office, on January 22, 2021, the Berks County Sheriff's Office Warrants Division and U.S. Marshal Task Force arrested Cordell Thomas, 32,  in the 300 Block of Pine Street, Reading.

Thomas was wanted on third-degree murder charges filed by the Pottsville Police Department for the death of his 3-month-old child who died due to blunt force trauma to the head on September 24th, 2020.

Thomas was charged with Murder of the Third Degree, aggravated assault, involuntary manslaughter, endangering the welfare of children, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person.

Thomas was brought back to Schuylkill County where he was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Reiley and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison after being denied bail.

Lucy F. (Loftus) Boardman, 74, of Pottsville, passed away on Wednesday afternoon at Tremont Health & Rehabilitation Center, Tremont.

Born in Pottsville, on February 1, 1946, she was a daughter of the late Francis Loftus, who was killed in a mining accident when Lucy was just a few months old and was raised by James Hanlon and her mother, Julia (Hoptak) Hanlon.

She was a graduate of Nativity BVM and a member of the former Mary Queen of Peace.

Lucy was a factory worker at B & J Knitting Mill and Phoenix Blouse.

She enjoyed gathering with friends and family and making people laugh. She was always the life of the party. Lucy loved the pets she had throughout the years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert R. Boardman, who passed in 2000 and to whom she was married 37 years; and son, John Boardman, who passed September 15, 2017.

Lucy is survived by two sons Robert Boardman, of Pottsville and Michael, companion of Jacqueline Conway, of Pottsville; daughter-in-law, Stacey Boardman, of Pottsville; grandchildren: Cash, Brooke, and Bobby Boardman and Michael Teague; sister, Judy Seaman, of Pottsville; several great grandchildren; a niece and a nephew; and several great nieces and nephews.


Funeral Services will be held on Monday, January 25th at 11:00 a.m. at Lord-Bixler Funeral Home, Inc., 1818 Mahantongo St., Pottsville. A viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of service in the funeral home.

Interment will follow in Mt. Peace Cemetery, Minersville.

Zalane M. (Kotzmoyer) Kunkel
, 64 years of age, of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 21, 2021, at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Medical Ctr. in Coaldale, Pennsylvania.

Born Wednesday, April 18, 1956 in Coaldale, Pennsylvania the daughter of the late Freeman, and Eleanor (Weldon) Kotzmoyer. She was also predeceased by; brothers, Ronald, and Robert Kotzmoyer; family friend, Russell Kramer.

Surviving are; husband of 46 years, Leon B. Kunkel; daughters, Lisa Ziegler wife of Harry of Tamaqua, Zalane Kunkel and her companion Steve Blasko of Tamaqua; sisters, Marcella Staivecki wife of Joseph of Nesquehoning, Eleanor Kotzmoyer and her companion Robert Sandri of Coaldale, Beth Ancharski of Coaldale; brothers, Freeman Kotzmoyer and his wife Mary of Fresno, CA., Brian Kotzmoyer and his wife Jennifer of Pottsville; grandchildren, James, Bronson, Michael, Hannah, Abraham, all of Tamaqua. Zalane was awaiting the birth of her first great grandson, Wyatt Leon.

A graduate of Tamaqua High School, Zalane was employed as a CNA for Rest Haven Nursing Home in Schuylkill Haven for thirty years.

Zalane loved spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren, and always wished she could do more with them.

Linda A Wetzel
, age 61, of Valley View, passed away Thursday, January 21, 2021 at Lehigh Valley Hospital - E Norwegian, Pottsville.

She was born on Tuesday, November 10, 1959, in Pottsville, a daughter of the late Preston Wetzel and the late Jean (Wolfe) Bowman.

She was a graduate of IU 29, MarLin.

Linda was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Valley View.

She is survived by her step father, Charles Bowman of Valley View; two sisters, Julie Ferster and Bonnie Shoop both of Lykens; a brother, David Wetzel of Palmerton; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be private.

Burial will be made in St. Andrew's Cemetery, Valley View.

C. Wayne Bair
, age 99, of Hegins, passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at his residence.

He was born on Wednesday, June 22, 1921, in Tremont, a son of the late Stephen A Bair and the late Mildred (Batdorf) Bair.

He was a 1939 graduate of the former Hegins Twp. High School.

Wayne served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II.

After leaving the service he worked at the former AA Shade Egg Plant in Spring Glen, then for fourteen years as a self employed coal miner, then a farmer and timber harvester, and retired from the former Hegins Precision Division of Penn Reel.

He served as a Hegins Twp Auditor.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley View.

Wayne was an avid river fisherman.

His wife Jean B (Bohner) Bair passed away in 2016. He was also preceded in death by a grandson Cody Bair.

He is survived by a daughter, Sally J Bair of Hegins; a son, David W Bair and his wife Debra of Hegins; a grandson, Kyle D Bair and his wife Kylie of Hegins; a sister, June Seiler of Hegins; a niece, Julie Maurer of Hegins; a nephew, Lane Seiler of Harrisburg; and his beloved English Cockers Lacey and Maggie.

Private services were held at Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, with Rev. Curtis Zemencik officiating.

Burial was made in Fountain Community Cemetery.

Edward J. Zavatsky
, 73, of Newtown, passed away Wednesday at Geisinger St. Luke’s Hospital, Orwigsburg.

Born in Pottsville, he was a son of the late John and Mary (Yaworski) Zavatsky.

He was a machinist with the railroad for 30+ years. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a 1965 graduate of Minersville High School. He was a member of the Most Blessed Trinity Church, Tremont. He was a member of the Newtown Fire Co., the Newtown Gun Club, the Pine Grove VFW and Minersville American Legion Post 544, Minersville.

Ed truly enjoyed his card games with his friends at the Newtown Gun Club and Firehouse, going to the casino and most importantly spending time with his grandkids. He will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Tyler Sincavage.

Edward is survived by his wife the former Ann Marie Lemke; 3 daughters, Amanda Sincavage and her husband Edward, Lake Wynonah, Debbie Zavatsky, at home and Nancy Zavatsky, Llewellyn; 3 grandchildren, Aaliyah Bush, Drake Bush and Tanner Sincavage; a brother, John Zavatsky and his wife Gloria, Oklahoma; nieces and nephews and cousins.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 Noon on Tuesday in Most Blessed Trinity Church, Tremont. Rev. George J. Kochuparambil will officiate. Relatives and friends may call at the Donald J. Butler Funeral Home, 328 Sunbury St., Minersville on Tuesday morning from 9AM to 11:30AM. Visitors are asked to observe CDC and PADOH guidelines for COVID 19. Interment with Military Honors will be in Indiantown National Cemetery, Annville, Pa.

Shenandoah Valley Senior Successfully Auditions for Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District Chorus Festival

For a school record setting third time, Jesse Carl, a senior member of the Shenandoah Valley music program successfully auditioned the District 10 Chorus Festival. 

According to the School District, Jesse previously attended District Chorus Festivals at Boyertown Area, and Exeter Township High Schools. 

Due to the current pandemic, there will be no festival for 2021, but the students will still be honored with a medal for their successful chorus audition. 

Jesse is also a four-time member of the Schuylkill County Chorus as well as a one-time participant in the Schuylkill County Band. 

For the past seven years, Jesse has actively been involved in both the Shenandoah Valley Drama Club, and the High School Band where he plays the tenor saxophone & the bass clarinet.

Schuylkill County Coronavirus update:  January 23rd, 2021

On Saturday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed as of 12:00 a.m., January 23, that there were 5,785 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 799,957.

In Schuylkill County, 100 new cases were reported bringing the county total to 10,701

Statewide, there are 4,169 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19. Of that number, 822 patients are in the intensive care unit with COVID-19. Most of the patients hospitalized are ages 65 or older, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older. 

The trend in the 14-day moving average of number of hospitalized patients per day has increased by nearly 4,400 since the end of September.

Statewide percent positivity for the week of January 15 – January 21 decreased to 10.5% over last week.

As of 11:59 p.m., Friday, January 22, there were 205 new deaths reported for a total of 20,526 deaths attributed to COVID-19.

There are 3,546,910 individuals who have tested negative to date.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 61,355 resident cases of COVID-19, and 11,522 cases among employees, for a total of 72,877 at 1,528 distinct facilities in all 67 counties. Out of our total deaths, 10,217 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities. 

Approximately 22,119 of our total cases are among health care workers.

COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution

Pennsylvania hospitals began receiving shipments of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine the week of Dec. 14 and Moderna COVID-19 vaccine the week of Dec. 21.

Through Jan. 22:

626,532 doses of the vaccine have been administered. Please note that this does include vaccine administration through the CVS as part of the Federal Pharmacy Partnership.
There are 413,450 people who have received one dose (partially covered).
There are 106,541 people who have received two doses (fully covered).
The math results in 626,532 doses administered to 519,991 people.

Two People Swindle Supermarket Employees Out of Cash

The Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven are investigating the theft of cash from a supermarket in North Manheim Township.

Police say on January 10th, 2021 around 3:00pm, two unknown suspects were able to successfully confuse two cashiers out of $230.00 in cash at the Redners Market on Manheim Road.

Emergency Personnel Responding to Working House Fire in Tamaqua

Fire crews are responding to a house fire in Tamaqua Saturday evening.

Just after 7:30pm, emergency personnel were called to 126 Clay Street, Tamaqua for a possible house fire.

As personnel arrived on scene they found a working fire in the basement of the home.

UPDATE: (8:00pm) - Fire is out, overhaul in progress.

Robert Repella
, 84, of Mahanoy City, PA, passed away Thursday, January 21st, at Ridgeview Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center.

Bobby was born in Park Place, PA on December 25, 1936, a son of the late Anna (Radansky) and Joseph Repella.

Bobby graduated from Mahanoy City High School.

He served in the U.S. Marines.

He was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church Mahanoy City.

Bobby is also survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Yankus, of New Jersey; Katherine Bolish, of Mahanoy City, nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by Brothers William, Joseph, Theodore, Steve, Nicholas and Albert and Sisters Anna Klitch, Virginia Stremba, and Tina Repella

Russell S Wolfe, Sr.
, 76, of Sunrise Court, Lebanon, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2021 at Broad Mountain Health & Rehab Center, Frackville.

Born on March 4, 1944 on his grandparents farm in Swopes Valley, Pine Grove, he was a son of the late Roy and Grace Wolfe Roth.

He attended Pine Grove Area Schools.

Russell was an Army Veteran and served from 1962-1965 with the 101st Airborne Div.

He was a Crane Operator at Bethlehem Steel and then worked for Farmers Pride in Fredericksburg. Most recently he was a truck driver for Pierce Welding and Fabrication, Bethel.

Russell loved being outdoors, cutting grass and tending to his flowers.

Preceding him in death were his wife Nancy L. Fisher Wolfe in 1999; two brothers, Roy Roth and Leonard Roth.

Surviving are two sons, E. Scott and wife Debbie Wolfe of Lancaster, Russell Jr. and wife Robin Wolfe of Myerstown; a daughter Cindy and husband Kevin Bender of Mt. Zion; four grandchildren, Hailey Wolfe, Kyle Allen, Nikki Maldonado and Matthew Wolfe; three great grandchildren, Brian, Lexus and Kole; a brother Ronald "RJ" and wife Karen Roth of Lebanon; his companion Beatrice Bordner of Lebanon; aunt, Eva (Polly) Kutz of Tremont; nieces and nephews.

Graveside Services and interment will be held on Friday, January 29, 2021 at 11:30 A.M. at Jacob's Lutheran Cemetery, 316 Suedberg Rd., Pine Grove with Chaplain Dean Luther and Chaplain Sylvester Grier officiating. There will be a viewing on Friday, January 29, 2021 from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at the H. L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc., Pine Grove following CDC guidelines. Dennis H. Seigfried
, 74, of Schuylkill Haven, PA went to be with the Lord on Saturday January 16th surrounded by his family.

Dennis was born January 15th, 1947 in Reading, PA. Son of Mary Jane (Hendricks) Seigfried and the late Harvey H. Seigfried.

He was the husband of Melanie A. (Antalosky) Seigfried. They were married on September 1st, 1990 and shared 30 wonderful years of marriage.

Dennis was in the U.S. Navy and proudly served in Vietnam from 1967-1969. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, National Defense Metal, Vietnam Service Metal and Vietnam Campaign Metal. Upon returning to the states he worked in the field of construction and later became the owner/operator of MAS Trucking.

Dennis had a need for speed and a real passion for fast cars. His great grandparents owned the Fort Lebanon Speedway which explained his passion for racing, it literally ran through his blood.

Dennis is survived by his two daughters, Renee, wife of Jason Correa and their children Blake and Bradley; Krysta, wife of Jacob Stoudt and their children Ava and Luke as well as a son, Timothy Seigfried.

A celebration of Life service will be held at Kimmel’s Church located at 179 Pine Creek Dr. Orwigsburg, PA 17961 at 2 P.M. on February 27th, 2021.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be made in Dennis’s honor to Tyler Reeser Racing 955 S. Liberty St. Orwigsburg, PA 17961.

Joseph A. Jordan, Sr.
, 79, of Cresswell Gardens, Ashland, a member of the former Jordan Brothers band, passed away due to complications of Covid-19, Wednesday, January 20th, 2021, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born in Ashland, he was a son of the late Angelo F. and Adele (Aleknavage) Jordan. He was a graduate of the former Frackville High School, class of 1958.

Joseph achieved musical notoriety in the Rock and Roll scene alongside his fellow Jordan Brothers, Frank, Bob and Lew Jordan.

A devoutly religious man, Joseph was a lifelong member of Saint Joseph the Worker Parish, Frackville, and served as a Eucharistic Minster; active with many social clubs, he was a member of the Rev. James A. Hogan, Knights of Columbus Council 2580; American Legion Post #398 and South-End Field and Stream, all of Frackville; he was also a member of the Broad Mountain Archery Club; Blind Veterans Association; Smoke and Ash Hunting Club, Tioga County and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

He was a U.S. Army veteran having served as a Medical Corpsman; he was an active Army Reserve from 1963 until 1969.

Joe enjoyed music, hunting, gardening, fishing, making wine and cooking. He was fortunate to show off his talents for 10 years with the band, “Another Side.” While Joe acquired many unique passions throughout his lifetime, his greatest devotion was always to his family.

In addition to his mother and father he was preceded in death by his brother; Robert J. Jordan.

Joseph spent 50 loving years married to his wife, Becky Jordan. A dedicated and supportive husband, Joe and Becky raised 4 children together: Angelo Jordan husband of Maureen, Hazleton; Joseph Jordan, Jr. husband of Shannon, Ashland; Vicki wife of Eric Vinskie, Frackville and Gina Jordan, Frackville. brothers; Frank and Lew Jordan; a sister; Kathleen Verano; Along with his four children, Joseph was blessed with 15 loving grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Between hosting family dinners, quad rides, fishing excursions and countless other family-oriented adventures, Joseph prided his rolls as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and God father.

Ever by his side, Joseph’s family remained supportive and loving as he prepared to transition on from this world and into God’s loving embrace. His wisdom, strength of character, and genuine heart will be forever cherished by his surviving family, friends and fans.

This past week, Joe Jordan of the Jordan Brothers passed away due to complications of COVID-19.

Jordan was well known locally and nationally through the band, the Jordan Brothers.

From the 1950's to the 1980's, the Jordan Brothers rocked and entertained fans. On Sunday, they were honored with their own Legacy Room in Frackville.

Known as the first Rock and Roll act from our area, the Jordan Brothers hits the charts with "Gimme Some Lovin", "Heart', and "Beach Party".

Many of their fans remember the band playing at the Lakeside Ballroom in Ryan Township, The Spot in Minersville, and Willow Lake.

Joe's work the band is honored through the Jordan Brothers Legacy Room in the Frackville Museum that opened in 2015.

Most recently Joe was known to play at local block parties and events with the band Another Side.

 
Joe's Obituary

Joseph A. Jordan, Sr., 79, of Cresswell Gardens, Ashland, a member of the former Jordan Brothers band, passed away due to complications of Covid-19, Wednesday, January 20th, 2021, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born in Ashland, he was a son of the late Angelo F. and Adele (Aleknavage) Jordan. He was a graduate of the former Frackville High School, class of 1958.

Joseph achieved musical notoriety in the Rock and Roll scene alongside his fellow Jordan Brothers, Frank, Bob and Lew Jordan.

A devoutly religious man, Joseph was a lifelong member of Saint Joseph the Worker Parish, Frackville, and served as a Eucharistic Minster; active with many social clubs, he was a member of the Rev. James A. Hogan, Knights of Columbus Council 2580; American Legion Post #398 and South-End Field and Stream, all of Frackville; he was also a member of the Broad Mountain Archery Club; Blind Veterans Association; Smoke and Ash Hunting Club, Tioga County and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

He was a U.S. Army veteran having served as a Medical Corpsman; he was an active Army Reserve from 1963 until 1969.

Joe enjoyed music, hunting, gardening, fishing, making wine and cooking. He was fortunate to show off his talents for 10 years with the band, “Another Side.” While Joe acquired many unique passions throughout his lifetime, his greatest devotion was always to his family.

In addition to his mother and father he was preceded in death by his brother; Robert J. Jordan.

Joseph spent 50 loving years married to his wife, Becky Jordan. A dedicated and supportive husband, Joe and Becky raised 4 children together: Angelo Jordan husband of Maureen, Hazleton; Joseph Jordan, Jr. husband of Shannon, Ashland; Vicki wife of Eric Vinskie, Frackville and Gina Jordan, Frackville. brothers; Frank and Lew Jordan; a sister; Kathleen Verano; Along with his four children, Joseph was blessed with 15 loving grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Between hosting family dinners, quad rides, fishing excursions and countless other family-oriented adventures, Joseph prided his rolls as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and God father.

Ever by his side, Joseph’s family remained supportive and loving as he prepared to transition on from this world and into God’s loving embrace. His wisdom, strength of character, and genuine heart will be forever cherished by his surviving family, friends and fans.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for immediate family. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic; the safety of family and friends is most important to us at this time. We greatly appreciate all the outpouring of prayers and support from everyone. Wear your mask and be safe. A Celebration of Life service will be announced at a later date.
