North Schuylkill Board Approves Phased Reopening Plans

$
0
0

Last week, during a special meeting on August 12th, 2020, of the North Schuylkill School Board, the district approved a phased reopening health and safety plan.

The full plan can be viewed at:
http://www.northschuylkill.net/covid/Health%20and%20Safety%20Plan.pdf

The board unanimously approved the plan that was organized by Superintendent Robert Ackell and the North Schuylkill administration.

The plan originally allowed children and families to chose to between a "full send" back to school where students returned to class 5 days a week or chose virtual learning 5 days a week from home.

After Governor Wolf made his recommendations in regards to county COVID-19 statistics, the district changed their "full send" plan to a hybrid learning approach.

Students who chose to use the hybrid plan with the last name starting with A through L will attend school Monday and Tuesday and work from home virtually the remaining three days.

Students M through Z will work virtually from home Monday through Wednesday and attend in-school on Thursdays and Fridays.

North Schuylkill is scheduled to start school Thursday, August 27th, 2020.

In a statement from Board President Charles Hepler:

"The North Schuylkill School District is committed to keeping our students, staff, and community safe. In order to best serve our stakeholders, we have adopted the recommendations of the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Department of Education. These recommendations are that the North Schuylkill School District and all Schuylkill County Schools should adopt a hybrid educational model. We feel that these recommendations should be implemented to begin the school year to keep our children and community safe.

We also realize that in these unprecedented times we must be flexible. Our hybrid learning plan will be reevaluated constantly. Our goal has been and always will be to bring all students to school for 100% in person learning five days a week. This switch to hybrid learning does not change that commitment!

We understand the hardship that this may cause some parents, however, we feel that the transition time is necessary in order to comply with state guidance. The North Schuylkill School Board, Administration, Faculty and Staff have worked tirelessly over the summer to ensure that the best educational interests of all students can be met. We still believe that 100% in person learning is essential to achieving this goal, and are committed to bringing all students back. We ask for your understanding, cooperation, patience, and support while we make the transition from online in the spring, to hybrid in the beginning of the school year, and finally to our goal of having all students back in class as soon as possible."

North Schuylkill has released additional details since the meeting on virtual and hybrid learning

LVHN and Pottsville Area School District Announce Program to Develop More EMT's in Schuylkill County

$

On Tuesday evening, the Pottsville Area School District approved a partnership with LVHN to help in the shortage of EMT's in Schuylkill County.
Schuylkill County, like much of Pennsylvania, has a dramatic shortage of emergency medical technicians (EMTs). A new partnership between Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Schuylkill, Pottsville Area School District, Schuylkill EMS and the East Lebanon County School District (ELCO) hopes to change that. The four organizations announced the formation of a new EMT training program to begin in the new school year at Pottsville Area High School.

“We are both excited and encouraged that this program will result in more emergency medical technicians in our community as well as the educational and career opportunities it will provide to our youth,” says William “Bill” Reppy, President, LVH–Schuylkill.

The year-long curriculum begins with the new school year. The program expects to draw about 30 high school students who will meet one period every day, in the classroom or through online learning. Those students already expressed an interest in pursuing EMT certification during spring scheduling.

“We are very excited for this educational opportunity for our students and for the long-term health and safety benefits for community,” says Jared A. Gerace, Acting Superintendent, Pottsville Area School District.

In addition to the daily class schedule, students will also participate in “field experiences” aboard Schuylkill EMS units. The classes, taught by Schuylkill EMS Staff, will include quizzes and tests as part of the curriculum. At the program’s conclusion, students will then sit for the National Registry Exam, a computer-based testing program that will give them both State and National Certification.

“We have experienced the EMT shortage first-hand,” notes Patrick Moran, Education and Community Outreach Coordinator with Schuylkill EMS and one of the instructors. “With the presence of COVID-19 that need for additional EMT’s has grown quite a bit. We anticipate the program will also provide some great professional opportunity as these students finish high school and beyond.” Moran also noted that the program will use all accepted social distancing measures, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and any other precautions.

Program organizers have noted that in addition to becoming an EMT, the program can encourage additional educational and professional development in the health care field.

Lehigh Valley Health Network has maintained a strong partnership with Schuylkill EMS as it provides medical directorship of the ambulance service.

In the partnership, Pottsville Area School District is providing its classroom facilities and access to interested students. Schuylkill EMS is providing the EMT instructors. ELCO has been providing EMT training in their schools for more than 20 years and is offering their program expertise to Schuylkill. Lehigh Valley Hospital–Schuylkill is funding the program.

Pennsylvania Farm Show to be held Virtually in 2021

On Wednesday, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding announced that Pennsylvania's agriculture industry will be celebrated virtually for the 2021 PA Farm Show, with no in-person events or competitions, to mitigate against COVID-19.

"There are times in the life of a farmer when the risks are too great or uncertain, requiring farmers to make the tough decision to leave a field fallow," said Redding. "To protect our assets – both our people and our resources – from incalculable losses, we have made the tough decision to take a year to lie in fallow. Rather than an in-person Farm Show, we will celebrate Pennsylvania agriculture virtually for 2021 as we prepare for a productive future.

"We'll look at our strengths and where we need to invest together in order to grow and cultivate for tomorrow. We'll consider what has become crystal clear during the pandemic – that agriculture is essential for life; our people are resilient and innovative. We will focus on agricultural awareness, education, and literacy while highlighting the interconnectedness of our food chain," added Redding.

The department announced the theme for the 2021 virtual PA Farm Show to be Cultivating Tomorrow. Details of the virtual show will be announced as they unfold over the coming weeks. Virtual events will be focused on education and awareness for both the general public and the agriculture industry. Any competitive ag events that are held virtually will not require the purchase of an animal.

"Each year, the Pennsylvania Farm Show uses a theme to convey our vision for the future of Pennsylvania agriculture – through Cultivating Tomorrow we'll tell this story through technology as we envision and cultivate a prosperous, thriving future together," said Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex Executive Director Sharon Myers. "We have not lost sight of what this industry means to Pennsylvania, in fact, this pandemic has highlighted our reliance on it. The show will go on, just as agriculture has persevered."
