Shenandoah firefighters made quick works of a kitchen fire in the borough Monday afternoon.

Around 3:40pm, Monday, emergency personnel were dispatched to 323 West Cherry Street, Shenandoah, for a house fire.

As police and the first fire personnel arrived, the fire was reported as a working fire in a first floor room of the home.

By 3:55pm, the fire was reported out with firefighters checking for extensions which turned up negative.

Firefighters remained on scene to ventilate the home.  No nearby homes were damaged.

According to Shenandoah Fire Marshal, Rick Examitas, the cause of the fire was determined to be a culinary incident from a pot with oil left on a stove.  One resident was evaluated but no injuries were reported.

Examitas credited working smoke alarms in the home for waking a child that was sleeping upstairs.  The child escaped the home during the fire while smoke filled the 1st floor of the home.

Fire units from Shenandoah, Mahanoy City, and Frackville responded to the scene.

Musicians past and present from the North Schuylkill School District played taps around the area Monday.

Due to the early closures of Pennsylvania's school districts, that left Memorial Day Parades without marching bands and stopped bands from playing.

Musician, Band Director, and Music Teacher, William Lennox from the North Schuylkill School couldn't sit around Memorial Day morning without playing some sort of music, so he turned to social media.

Lennox put out a notice to Schuylkill County musicians that were interested in playing Monday.  Four of his current and past students reached out with interest.

Instead of marching Monday, Lennox, along with Jacob Hepler, Zach Piampi, Brandon Joseph, and Mark Klitsch visited the cemeteries of Frackville, Fountain Springs, Ashland, Centralia, Aristes, and Ringtown and simply played Taps to honor the lives lost and were laid to rest.

Woman and Two Children Injured in Crash in Minersville; Charges Pending

A woman and two children were injured in a crash in Minersville on Wednesday.

According to Minersville Police, around 1:00pm, Wednesday, emergency personnel were dispatched to the area of the 500 Block of Third Street, Minersville for a motor vehicle accident.

Police say the crash occurred when Suzanne Marie Hedemann, 30, of Pottsville, was travelling south in the 500 blk of S. Third Street when she exited her lane of travel and collided head on with a concrete mixer truck who was travelling northbound.

The mixer was unable to avoid the collision and Hedemann’s vehicle struck the mixer head on.

After collision, Hedemann’s vehicle traveled backwards coming to rest approximately 50 feet from the mixer.

Hedemann's Chevrolet Equinox sustained heavy damage with a 10 year old male passenger that was trapped under the dash.

Hedemann suffered a severe head injury while a 4 year old female passenger suffered head and chest injuries.

The Minersville Fire Department and the Yorkville Fire Department extricated the 10 year old from the vehicle and was found to have suffered severe leg fractures and head trauma.

Hedemann and the 10 year old were flown from the scene to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville while the 4 yr old female was transported to Geisinger by ambulance.

Upon further investigation, police learned that Hedemann did not have a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.

An initial investigation indicates that Hedemann was possibly distracted by using a cellular phone at the time of the accident. Hedemann’s cellular phone was seized from the vehicle and a forensic exam will be conducted of the phone by police. Hedemann faces charges of multiple counts Aggravated Assault by Vehicle along with numerous other charges pending completion of the investigation.
