Leesport McDonald's Fire Believed to Have Started from a Discarded Cigarette

The Pennsylvania State Police have released some information in regards to Wednesday's fire that damaged a McDonald's in Leesport.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police Troop L Public Information Officer, Trooper David Beohm, on Wednesday, May 20, 2020 around 2:00 PM Fire crews responded to 5500 Pottsville Pike, Ontelaunee Township, Berks County for a report of a fire on the front wall of the McDonald’s.

Upon arrival firefighters encountered a fire extending from the ground to the roof along one wall.

The wind conditions made suppression efforts difficult for firefighters.

Fire crews fighting the fire on the roof were forced to quickly suspend efforts and get out of the way of the fast-moving fire by fleeing the rooftop.

Several fire tools were damaged as a result of them fleeing the roof.

Police say no injuries were reported and no damage estimate is available at the time of this update. The store is hoping to resume drive-through operations within the next several weeks.

An investigation by a State Police Fire Marshal showed that the fire originated on the exterior wall at the ground in the area of the mulch bed. The investigation shows that the fire likely originated as a result of a discarded cigarette by someone approaching the door to the restaurant.

The investigation is ongoing.

Schuylkill County to Move to "Yellow Phase" Next Friday

Governor Tom Wolf has announced that Schuylkill County will move from the "Red" to "Yellow Phase" next Friday.

The move will take effect at 12:01am, May 29th, 2020 and includes eight counties that included Dauphin, Franklin, Huntingdon, Lebanon, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, and Schuylkill moving to yellow.

At the same time, Seventeen PA counties that had already moved to yellow will move to green and includes Bradford, Cameron, Clarion, Clearfield, Crawford, Elk, Forest, Jefferson, Lawrence, McKean, Montour, Potter, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga, Venango and Warren.

Any counties that remain red will move to yellow on June 5th, 2020.

According to a press release from the Governor's office, In deciding which counties to move to yellow, the state used risk-based metrics from Carnegie Mellon University combined with contact tracing and testing capability and a sustained reduction in COVID-19 hospitalizations. While the 50 new cases per 100,000 population was considered, it did not weigh any more heavily than other factors.

Over the past two weeks:
  • The state has seen sustained reductions in hospitalizations. From May 8 when the first counties moved to yellow to yesterday, the number of COVID-19 patients hospitalized dropped by nearly one thousand – from 2,618 to 1,667.
  • The number of COVID patients on ventilators shrank by about a third, from 505 to 347.
  • New cases continue to decline: From May 8 to May 15, the state added 6,384 cases and from May 15 to 21, added 4,770.
  • The current COVID-19 incidence rate in the state is 83.4 cases per 100,000 people. Two weeks ago, it was 113.6 per 100,000. Most other states are seeing their new case rate continue to increase or remain flat. Pennsylvania is one of just 19 states with new case-rate declines.
The following guidelines are to be followed during the "Yellow Phase"

Diocese of Allentown Parishes to Reopen Masses to the Public

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
The Diocese of Allentown announced Friday when parishes can resume public masses.

On Friday, Bishop Alfred Schlert announced that parishes in the Diocese will reopen Masses to the public beginning June 1st, 2020.

“Our faith plays a vital role in our lives, especially during times of pandemic,” Bishop Schlert said. “Catholics throughout the region, deprived of the Eucharist for so long, yearn for the opportunity to once again receive Holy Communion.”

Parishes have been closed since the Diocese suspended public masses on March 27th, 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions..

According to the Diocese, mass attendance remains voluntary in the yellow phase. Those who do not feel safe, or who have compromising health conditions, should not attend. The dispensation from the Mass obligation will remain in place until the green phase, and online livestream Masses will continue.

Priests are being trained in new protocols, including how to distribute Holy Communion safely. Precautions will be taken to ensure that the distribution can occur reverently, but also in a manner that protects the health of the people involved.

In a press release from the Diocese, it stated "The main priority is the safety of the faithful, and the safety of priests. The faithful will be required to wear masks. Strict social distancing will be required, and ushers will help ensure that protocol. Mass attendance indoors will be restricted to no more than 25 percent of a church’s seating capacity. Larger outdoor Masses will be permitted, with proper distancing precautions."

There will be no hymnals, to help prevent the spread of the virus. Only certain entrances and exits will be in use, and the faithful will be dismissed by pew to limit large gatherings after Mass.

Parishes are securing cleaning supplies and sanitizer. Holy Water fonts will remain empty.

For Baptisms, weddings and funerals, the participation limit also is no more than 25 percent of the church’s seating capacity.

“The decision to end public attendance at Masses was painful for everyone involved, but necessary for the times,” Bishop Schlert said. “With the precautions that we have taken, we can now offer responsible worship for those who wish it, while continuing to act in service of the public good.”
