All Pennsylvania Schools to Remain Closed for Remainder of Academic Year

On Thursday, Governor Tom Wolf announced that all schools will remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the governor made the decision in consultation with Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine and Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera.

Students and families can continue to pick up meals at designated sites.

Although schools are closed, teaching and learning may continue: schools are strongly encouraged to provide continuity of education for all students in the most appropriate and accessible ways possible. PDE has secured resources intended to help all schools that want to use them – including those not currently offering online platforms, those requiring additional technology support, and those that may rely on traditional methods, such as paper lessons, to continue educating students. There is no cost to schools or students for these resources.

“We must continue our efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus during this national crisis,” Governor Wolf said. “This was not an easy decision but closing schools until the end of the academic year is in the best interest of our students, school employees and families.”

Secretary Rivera said the administration’s primary consideration has always been to make the best decision in the context of student and community health and safety.

“While the rapidly evolving COVID-19 pandemic and its mitigation efforts have created uncertainty in our schools and communities, today’s action to close schools for the remainder of the academic year provides school communities with predictability and understanding of the conditions under which they’ll be operating and serving students,” Rivera said. “As schools and communities adapt to the prolonged school closure, PDE will continue to work with our state, educational, and business and nonprofit partners to meet the needs of students.”

Thursday’s decision applies to all public K-12 schools, brick and mortar and cyber charter schools, private and parochial schools, career and technical centers and intermediate units. All Department of Education early learning program classrooms, including those for Pre-K Counts, Head Start Supplemental Assistance Program (HSSAP) and Preschool Early Intervention, will also remain closed.

Colleges and universities may not resume in-person instruction or reopen their physical locations until the governor permits them to open or lifts the closure of non-life-sustaining businesses.

Schools will remain closed though the end of the 2019-2020 academic year as it is defined by the local school calendar.

Under the state’s directive, schools could begin summer programming on the day after their academic year ends.

Secretary Rivera added that all re-openings will be contingent on public health guidance provided by the Secretary of Health and stay-at-home orders issued by the governor.

In addition to the school closure announcement, through his order Secretary Rivera also took action that will ensure crucial stability of education programs. Under Act 13 of 2020, the secretary has exercised his executive authority to adjust requirements for the evaluation of professional employees and waive student teaching requirements that may not be possible in the context of school closures.

“By taking these actions, the department is providing flexibility in the near term, while signaling that core functions of public education can and will continue,” he said.

A Good Friday tradition continued today in the borough of Gordon when the Simpson United Methodist Church held the "Trek of the Cross".

While walking barefoot and wearing a crown of thorns, Jeffrey Nemeth, of Frackville, portrayed Jesus Christ as he carried the cross through the streets of the borough.

The annual tradition began in 1979 making this the 42nd year of the event which began when Nemeth's great uncle portrayed Jesus.

The "trek" began in front of the Simpson United Methodist Church on Biddle Street and traveled down Biddle Street and back up McKnight Street back to the church, all while barefoot with temperatures in the mid 30's and some light flurries.

Due to the COVID-19 concerns, borough residents were not allowed to join in the trek, but borough residents watched from their porches, as the tradition carried on.

LVHN Updates Criteria for Testing Individuals with Suspected COVID-19

$
0
0

Effective immediately, Lehigh Valley Health Network’s (LVHN) criteria for testing individuals suspected of having coronavirus (COVID-19) have been updated.

The new criteria have been implemented at all Assess and Test Centers throughout the LVHN network.

Under the new criteria, only symptomatic people ages 65 and over, symptomatic people at a higher risk of complications and other defined symptomatic at-risk people will be tested for COVID-19.

The new testing criteria was recommended in light of continued regional and national shortages of COVID-19 test kits and other testing supplies. These recommendations reflect the current state of COVID-19 spread in our respective markets and are based on evolving data, observations and availability of testing supplies.

Symptomatic people at a higher risk of complications include those with chronic lung disease and asthma, significant heart disease, immunosuppression, diabetes, morbid obesity, chronic kidney disease and chronic liver disease. In addition, higher risk people include pregnant women, those that reside in long-term care facilities, healthcare workers, and first responders.

Testing of individuals exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 infection and living with someone with a confirmed or presumptive diagnosis of COVID-19 is no longer recommended. These patients can be presumed to have COVID-19 and should be encouraged to follow the same recommendations for infected individuals.

Otherwise healthy individuals who have classic symptoms of COVID-19 infection and who are not considered high-risk based on the testing criteria will no longer be tested. They are encouraged to self-isolate (separate oneself from others) at home, get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids and take fever-reducing medication.

COVID-19 screening options continue to be available to people exhibiting signs of the infection. These options include accessing LVHN e-visits at LVHN.org/evisit, calling the LVHN information line at 888-402-LVHN or scheduling an LVHN virtual screening at LVHN.org/videoscreening. A medical professional will conduct an evaluation, and, if applicable, will provide a presumptive diagnosis of COVID-19. They will also provide instruction on self-care.

Health care providers advise seeking emergency care immediately if symptoms are getting progressively worse, you’re experiencing significant shortness of breath, have chest pain, and can’t seem to function in daily activities as you have been. In case of emergency dial 911. Indicate to the dispatcher that you have COVID-19, and, if possible, wear a mask when emergency personnel enter your house to avoid the spread of infection.

If your condition is deemed non-life-threatening, there is no need to go to the emergency room (ER) or call 911. Continue to follow the self-care instructions provided by your health care provider.

Asymptomatic patients will not be tested at any LVHN Assess and Test centers. Current tests are only capable of making the diagnosis of active COVID-19. The test does not confirm or rule out a significant exposure.

North Schuylkill has found a way to remind their 2020 graduates that they are still thinking about them even though they are missing out on many events because of the COVID-19 virus.

On Thursday, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf and the Department of Education announced that the state's schools would remained closed for the remainder of the academic school year.  While students are still being taught from home, senior students learned many of the events that they thought they would get to experience, including prom and graduation, would also be cancelled or altered.

On Saturday, North Schuylkill's Superintendent announced a way the district will be honoring those graduates until the end of the school year.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Ackell announced that beginning Friday, April 17th, 2020, and occurring again every Friday night through May 29th, 2020, at 8:20pm (20:20 Military Time), the lights at Ghosh Orthodontics Field at Spartan Stadium will be lit to let the Seniors, the Class of 2020, know that the school district and North Schuylkill Community are still thinking about them.

The lights will stay on for 20 minutes and 20 seconds in honor of this year's senior class.

The District asks that anyone that attends the lighting, to please practice social distancing and remain in your vehicle.
