According to Pottsville Police Chief Richard Wojiechowsky, on March 6 2020 at approx. 6:30pm, the Pottsville Bureau of Police were contacted by the owner of OIP Restaurant, located at Route 61 and Mauch Chunk Street, in reference to a theft from his business.

The Detective Division was assigned this case and immediately began an investigation into the incident which included video surveillance footage from the business showing a male with distinctive clothing entering the business during the early morning hours on 03/06/20 with a key in order to steal cash from inside the store.

New Rural Health Center to Provide Heath Care for the Ashland Area

In a time when health care is more important than ever, a new rural health center is ready to provide additional health care to those that may not have access to the care they need in the Ashland area.

A rural health center is a clinic intended to increase access to primary care services for patients in rural communities. RHCs can be public, nonprofit, or for-profit healthcare facilities.

RHC's provide health care for under served areas and communities where the citizens may not have  access to the best insurances.  The centers are required to use a team approach of physicians working with non-physician providers such as nurse practitioners (NP), physician assistants (PA), and certified nurse midwives (CNM) to provide services.

Through an approved RHC, a patient's insurance still pays their part of the medical bill, but the federal and state government pays the remainder of the bill so the doctor's office does not go bankrupt and can continue to provide services.

The new Cornerstone Coordinated Health Care Center in Ashland, located at 2114 Centre Street, is operated by Dr. James Greenfield, who has also operated a rural health center, Cornerstone RHC, in Frackville, since 2012.

Greenfield opened the second clinic to provide health care in after seeing the need for one in the Ashland. and Mount Carmel areas.

"Our area needed more facilities that are going to help out with patients that can't get to doctor's offices without transportation.  The new facility is within walking distance and it's a nice location for people to get to other locations if they need to." said Greenfield.

Currently, the clinic is providing primary care which means they will see anyone from a few weeks old to the elderly.  The clinic also accepts ALL insurances.  For those interested in additional services they can contact their Frackville office. These additional services include counseling, drug addiction services, and most recently in car, drive up COVID-19 testing.

The new office has four exam rooms, with additional rooms that will be used as needed.

Anyone wishing to schedule an appointment can contact the Ashland office at (570) 794-6123.

A special phone number has been set up for those looking for COVID-19 testing at (570) 392-3338, and for all other appointments and or questions/concerns please call the main office at (570)794-6123.

On Friday, the Diocese of Allentown announced they would be suspending Holy Week Public Masses.

According to a press release:

After continued consultation with healthcare professionals, and taking into account the restrictions put in place by civil authorities, Diocese of Allentown Bishop Alfred Schlert has announced that the suspension of public Masses in the Diocese will remain in place for the entirety of the upcoming Holy Week, April 5-12.

The Bishop said he made the decision only after prayerful reflection. “I am pained to have made this decision,” the Bishop said, “I certainly never envisioned that there would be a time when we would have to cancel public Masses for Holy Week and Easter. However, it is the safest course of action for our region.”

Priests of the Diocese will celebrate private Masses and conduct private services throughout Holy Week, which includes Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. The Bishop asked that all possible electronic and spiritual resources be made available to the faithful so they may share in these services.

Bishop Schlert has been celebrating a livestream Mass from his private chapel every day. Celebrated at 8 a.m. Monday through Saturday and at 10 a.m. on Sundays, the Mass is available at www.ad-today.com.

“I assure the faithful that priests will continue to be available to them, and will be creative in the ways they serve the people entrusted to their care,” Bishop Schlert said.
