Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission to Hold Mentored Youth Fishing Day at Sweet Arrow Lake

$

For the second year, at Sweet Arrow Lake, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s Mentored Youth Fishing Day will be held March 28.

Craig Morgan, Sportsmen’s Advisory Board (SAB) Chairman, said that last year’s weather was ‘absolutely horrible’ for the mentored youth fishing day. Even though thousands of trout, including 50 lunkers (18 to 25-inch trout) were stocked for the kids, Mother Nature threw the kids a knuckle ball. A cold, windy day greeted the mentors and their kids and only a couple trout were caught.

‘This year we hope Mom nature will treat us better’, said Morgan. Along with the Sportsmen’s Advisory Board, the 501c3 Friends of Schuylkill Parks and Recreation, Sweet Arrow Lake Park Board, Swatara Co-op Trout Nursery and a grant from the Schuylkill Area Community Foundation will make sure there are loads of trout for the kids, including another 50 lunkers.

Any youth under age 16, along with a licensed adult with a trout permit may fish on March 28 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. However, the youth must have either a Voluntary Youth Fishing License or a Mentored Youth Fishing Permit. The cost for the license is $2.90. The Youth Voluntary License is free. ‘We encourage mentors to purchase the license as the Fish and Boat Commission, through the Wildlife and Sportfish Restoration Program, will receive about $5 for every license sold’, Gary Slutter, Vice Chairman, commented.

It is so much easier for kids to fish a lake than trying to navigate streams and slippery banks. Boats with electric motors only are also allowed on Sweet Arrow Lake. Kids may keep two trout and mentors may fish but must return all fish to the lake unharmed. Morgan’s advice to mentors is to leave the fishing to the kids.

In addition to the Mentored Youth Day, the groups mentioned above are sponsoring the Bruce ‘I Go Fishing’ Schneck year long trout fishing event at Sweet Arrow Lake. In addition to all the fish stocked for the mentored day, an additional

$10,000 worth of trout will be stocked with a $1,000, $500, $750 lifetime maintenance free reel from Innovative Reel Technologies and 30 other $100 cash prizes, winnable if a tagged trout is caught. Registration is $15 per person 16 and over by April 4th southeast region trout opener. See www.sweetarrowlakepark.com for more information.

The investigation showed that a Mahanoy City EMS ambulance being operated by an 18 year old female EMT from Mahanoy City had been en route back to Mahanoy City after being dispatched for an emergency call while at the Geisinger St. Luke’s Medical Centre in Orwigsburg.

The ambulance driver approached the intersection traveling northbound with the emergency lights activated on the ambulance.

St. Luke’s Miners, Blue Raider Foundation Present Tamaqua Student with Scholarship to Attend Penn State Pre-Med Academy

St. Luke’s University Health Network's Miners Campus and the Tamaqua Blue Raider Foundation will provide a Tamaqua Senior High School student with a scholarship to attend the Penn State Pre-Med Academy this summer.
This year’s scholarship recipient is Grace Stegemerten, a sophomore at Tamaqua. She will travel to University Park campus this July to participate in the six-day Academy, during which she will learn medical techniques, use medical equipment, and gain exposure to the specialties and career possibilities in the medical field.

“[I am interested] in the Penn State Pre-Med Academy to help advance my plans of going into the medical field after graduation,” Stegemerten says. “I am grateful for being given the opportunity to attend this camp so I can learn techniques and figure out the profession I will pursue in this field.”

The partnership between St. Luke’s Miners Campus and the Tamaqua Blue Raider Foundation was formed two years ago to encourage Tamaqua students interested in the medical profession to gain experience and greater insight into their career options.

“High school students considering a career in the medical field need to make critical decisions that are going to lead them down that road,” explains Wendy Lazo, President of St. Luke's Miners Campus.

“Through this partnership, St. Luke's is proud to support local students and serve as a resource for them as they navigate these decisions and learn more about career opportunities. Part of our commitment to our students is that this isn't a once-and-done investment.”

To underscore Lazo's point, the winner of the 2019 Penn State Pre-Med Academy, Lottie Mateyak, returned to St. Luke's Miners Campus for a job-shadowing experience.

“This is a phenomenal opportunity for top students interested in exploring careers in the medical field,” says Walter Kruczek of the Blue Raider Foundation. “It gives students exposure to a collegiate environment and lets them see firsthand what it takes to be successful as a medical student.”

St. Luke's Miners Campus' partnership with the Tamaqua Blue Raider Foundation is just one of the ways it is working to provide guidance to local students with career aspirations in health care. It also holds its annual Future Physicians Dinner, during which local students interested in becoming doctors have dinner with St. Luke's doctors to talk about educational and career paths, and to learn about practicing rural medicine. In 2018, St. Luke's Miners Campus also started a family medicine residency with a rural training track.

“We are now hosting and training residents who are interested in family medicine in a rural setting,” explains Micah Gursky, Director of Business Development & Physician Relations.

“Physicians are more likely to practice in the vicinity of their training. Through programs such as these, we are addressing the physician shortage in our region while providing students with exciting opportunities. We see it as a strong investment in the health of our area.”

Kruzcek lauds St. Luke’s Miners Campus for its commitment to its community.

“This is a great partnership,” he notes. “Tamaqua is not in an area that provides a lot of tax credits and we don't have major corporations in our backyard. We rely on partnerships. St. Luke's is the premier healthcare provider in the region and, with their help, we are able to provide opportunities for our students that have a positive impact on our area now and in the future.”

Service of Remembrance will be held Saturday at 2PM from James E. Humphrey Funeral Home, Pottsville, with Deacon John E. Quirk officiating. Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 1PM until the time of services. Interment will be private.

On Wednesday morning, Geisinger enacted visitation restrictions at their hospitals and clinics in order to help protect their patients from the spread of the Coronavirus.

A Press Release from Geisinger stated:

To continue protecting our neighbors and health plan members against the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Geisinger has enacted masking recommendations and visitor restrictions for those with respiratory illness symptoms. The changes are now in place at all Geisinger hospitals and clinics.

Symptoms of respiratory illness include fever, runny nose, cough and shortness of breath. Patients who are exhibiting respiratory illness symptoms will be provided a mask for use through the duration of their visit to the hospital or clinic. Those patients do not need to cancel their appointments.

Visitors who are considered essential to be with a patient, including a parent, spouse or primary caregiver, should also wear a mask throughout a visit if they’re showing respiratory illness symptoms. Anyone else showing respiratory illness symptoms should not visit a hospital or clinic until their symptoms have subsided.

Patients and visitors can find masks at or near the entrance ways of Geisinger’s hospitals and clinics.

Geisinger has established a hotline and webpage to help address any questions or concerns about COVID-19. Before visiting a doctor’s office, walk-in care clinic or emergency department, call your primary care doctor’s office or call Geisinger’s novel coronavirus hotline at 570-284-3657. For general questions and information about COVID-19, you can visit geisinger.org/coronavirus.
