On Wednesday, Governor Tom Wolf announced seven new low-interest loan approvals through the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA) that will support the purchase of new technology and equipment, provide early intervention and adult care services to Pennsylvanians, create a new Commercial Driver License certification center, and support the creation of new full-time jobs across the commonwealth.
“The funding awarded today will help businesses in six Pennsylvania counties — businesses that serve as a snapshot of the growth we are seeing across the commonwealth — better serve their customers and communities,” said Gov. Wolf. “My administration is committed to supporting businesses of all sizes as they grow and evolve, and this funding will help these companies launch new services, save money, and operate more efficiently.”

In 2019, PIDA approved $52,906,326 in low interest loans that have resulted in $104,174,333 in private investment and supported the creation and retention of 1,977 full-time jobs.

In Schuylkill County, Columbia Street, LLC, through the Schuylkill Economic Development Corporation, was approved for a $778,292, 15-year PIDA loan at a 2.75 percent fixed interest rate to acquire and renovate a 14,128-square-foot single tenant facility located in Schuylkill Haven. The facility will be leased to one tenant, Evans Network of Companies, and will be used as an extension to the company’s national headquarters located less than a mile away. The total project cost is $1,556,584.

PIDA provides low-interest loans and lines of credit to Pennsylvania businesses that commit to creating and retaining full-time jobs within the commonwealth, as well as for the development of industrial parks and multi-tenant facilities. Loan applications are packaged and underwritten by a network of certified economic development organizations (CEDOs) that partner with PIDA. PIDA is currently offering interest rates between 2 and 3 percent for applications received by March 31, 2020.

-----------------------------------------

The following companies were also approved for one of the PIDA loans:

Cumberland County

The purchase of the scanner will allow the company to replace its conventional intra-oral dental impression techniques, substantially reduce municipal dental waste materials, generate savings, increase office productivity, and increase patient safety. The total project cost is $25,555.

Northumberland County
SJR-JLC, LLC and Reis Holdings, LLC, were appro for a $164,000 PIDA loan, at a 2.75 percent interest rate for fifteen years to purchase the real estate of the Professional Driver’s Academy located in Milton Borough. Governor Wolf: Pennsylvania’s Unemployment Compensation Tax Rate Reduced to Lowest Level in 40 Years

On Wednesday, Governor Tom Wolf  announced that Pennsylvania businesses will see a reduction in their unemployment compensation (UC) tax rates, saving an estimated $552 million this year. The Department of Labor & Industry eliminated the 1.1 percent UC tax rate interest factor effective January 1, 2020. This is the lowest UC tax rate on record since 1979.
“We are continuing our efforts to drive down the cost of doing business in Pennsylvania,” said Governor Wolf. “Lowering the UC tax rate will help business owners invest in their own company and workforce to create more jobs, while also maintaining fair benefits for workers who lose their job through no fault of their own.”

Today’s rate cut announcement comes following completion of repayment of Pennsylvania’s unemployment UC bond debt on January 1, 2020. Act 60 of 2012 included provisions for refinancing Pennsylvania’s federal loans for UC through the sale of bonds to obtain the lowest possible rate of interest. The 1.1 percent interest factor was assessed for businesses from 2013 to 2019 to repay the UC bonds. This refinancing of Pennsylvania’s UC debt saved employers approximately $57 million in interest costs.

“This is a good day for Commonwealth job creators, who pay some of the highest unemployment compensation taxes in the country,” said Gene Barr, President and CEO, Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry. “The Great Recession put the state’s UC Fund in financial crisis, threatening this important program and forcing us to borrow billions from the federal government. We were proud to work with a bipartisan coalition of legislators and the Corbett administration to shore up this critical safety net and refinance the federal loan, which employers were still responsible for paying off but under more favorable terms. We are pleased employers can start off the New Year with a lower UC tax rate and thank Governor Wolf for recognizing the need to drive down business costs in PA.”

The UC Trust Fund’s solvency is calculated annually to ensure Pennsylvania is prepared for periods of economic downturn. As of July 1, 2019, the fund’s solvency percentage was 181 percent, the highest level since 2001. The fund is considered solvent when its level reaches two and a half times (or 250 percent) the average annual benefit payout over the last three years.

Unemployment compensation provides temporary wage replacement income to qualified workers who have lost their job through no fault of their own. The Unemployment Compensation Law requires covered employers to make contributions into a pooled reserve known as the UC Trust Fund. These contributions are used to pay benefits, for a limited time, to jobless individuals who are able and available for suitable work but continue to be unemployed while looking for another job.

After postponing the Pottsville Winterfest that was scheduled for this Saturday, the Pottsville Area Development Corporation has released information and announced a change in the entertainment for the event.

Pottsville’s second annual Winterfest is postponed, due to inclement weather. The event will now take place on February 8th, from 11AM-5PM on South 2nd Street between West Market Street and Mahantongo Street. Unfortunately, the city of Pottsville is expecting heavy rain throughout the day, with  an approximate ½ inch of accumulation and strong winds. The safety of attendees and outdoor vendors are top priority to the event organizers, and ultimately resulted in this change of plans.

The majority of Winterfest with remain the same, as many of the local craft and food vendors have already committed to attending on February 8th instead of the original date.

Blue Mountain Ski Resort will be donating 2 truckloads of snow for the family-friendly snow play area, indoor vendors will be housed inside the Pottsville Area Development Corporation building, including face painters and artisan level crafters, and the Yuengling beer garden will be in full swing for adults. In addition, there will be a live ice sculpture demonstration happening on South 2nd Street, sponsored by the Schuylkill County Visitors Bureau.

Sapphire will no longer be able to participate as the main entertainment, but Toolshed Jack, a crowd favorite from last year’s Winterfest event, will replace them. Crimson Academy for the Performing Arts and Spotlight kids will still be performing.

Volunteers who signed up previously will be contacted as soon as possible with updated information.  Anyone looking to sign up as a volunteer can find the link on www.downtownpottsville.com/events.

The entire Winterfest planning team, including PADCO, the Continued Progress Project Committee, and the historic Greater Pottsville Winter Carnival hope to see the community come out enjoy festivities on February 8th.

Knoebels Announces New Ride and Ride Removal for 2020 Season

On Thursday, Knoebels announced their newest ride arriving in 2020 named "Tornado".

Knoebels Amusement Resort is celebrating the new year with the announcement of a new ride for their 2020 season.

America’s largest free-admission amusement park announced a new ride named “Tornado.” According to Knoebels’ spokesperson, Stacy Ososkie, the 32-passenger ride is expected to be ready for the park’s April 25 opening day.

“Eight cars hold four passengers each in individual seats facing the inside of the car,” said Ososkie. “Once the ride reaches speed moving in a circle, it tilts 20 degrees and lifts the cars up to 15 feet from ground level.”

According to Knoebels’ park president, Richard “Dick” Knoebel, there’s another aspect of the ride that will likely be the favorite for many guests.

“Controlling part of a ride provides a really unique and exciting experience,” said Knoebel. “Riders will be able to spin the cars of our new ride themselves, choosing their thrill level.”

Visitors need to be 38 inches tall to ride Tornado with an adult, and 48 inches to ride alone. It will be located near StratosFEAR drop tower ride and Kreeper’s Pumpkin Patch game.

While there will be an addition to the ride lineup, 2020 will also see the removal of a ride that has been at the park for more than 20 years. Debuting at Knoebels in 1998, 1001 Nacht took guests on a magic carpet ride reaching 85 feet in height.
1001 Nacht will be removed before the 2020 Season
at Knoebels

“The ride is nearing the end of its operational life and ridership isn’t strong, meaning it makes sense for us to remove it to help with future planning for the park,” said Ososkie.

More details on 2020 changes and additions will be made available as Knoebels’ 94th season approaches.

Two men were taken into custody on warrants and drugs were seized after an incident on Interstate 81.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, on Tuesday, January 7th, 2020, around 5:15pm, a State Trooper was travelling north on Interstate 81 in Butler Township near mile marker 121.3 when he came upon a disabled vehicle on the right shoulder of the highway.

The trooper approached the vehicle and the driver, James Sites, 52, of Myerstown told him that his vehicle was out of gas and that AAA was on the way.

A check on the registration of the vehicle indicated that Sites had a suspended license from a DUI and also had a warrant.

When the Trooper approached the vehicle a second time, he had Sites and his passenger, Blake Worhacz, 23, of Williamstown exit the vehicle.  Sites was then taken into custody.

While being taken into custody for the warrant, the Trooper smelled an odor of marijuana on Sites, and he also showed signs of impairment.  The Trooper also smelled marijuana in the vehicle.

A probable search was conducted where marijuana and methamphetamine was found and seized.

Worhacz was also found to have a warrant for his arrest, was taken into custody, and admitted to having methamphetamine inside the vehicle.  Worhacz also provided a false name and date of birth to the Trooper.

Sites is facing DUI and drug charges while Worhacz will face drug charges.

Cumberland County Sheriffs took custody of Worhacz while Sites was committed to SCI Frackville on a parole warrant.
