Geisinger Pottsville Clinic to Participate in Medication Takeback Day

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
This Saturday, Oct. 26, is the semi-annual national Medication Takeback Day with Geisinger offering convenient locations to drop off unused or expired medications.

Geisinger has 40 medication-disposal boxes through central and northeastern Pennsylvania, including one inside the Geisinger Pottsville Clinic at 529 Terry Reiley Way in Pottsville. The box can accept prescription and over-the-counter solid medications, tablets and capsules, liquid medications in the original containers, prescription patches, medical creams and ointments, vitamins, nasal sprays and even pet medications. The boxes are secure, allowing narcotics and controlled substances to be accepted. If possible, leave prescriptions in their original bottles.

“Cold and flu season is almost here, and you might be reaching to take some medicine,” said Jenny Plummer, a Geisinger pharmacist and director of Geisinger’s retail and mail-order pharmacy. “Now is a great time to look inside your medicine cabinets and around the house and collect any old or expired medications.”

Letting medications accumulate at home can cause problems, including opening the doorway for those medications to fall into the wrong hands, Plummer said. She recommends frequently sweeping your home and looking closely at expiration labels.

“As you check your medications, make sure they’re not expired or labeled incorrectly, and most importantly, keep them out of reach of young kids,” Plummer said. “Leaving unused prescriptions or expired over-the-counter medications in the home poses a great risk. If you have a question about a prescription or medication, you can always ask your pharmacist about whether a medication is safe to keep or properly dispose of it.”

Not everything can be accepted in the takeback boxes, however. Items not accepted include intravenous solutions, injectables, syringes, needles, hydrogen peroxide, compressed cylinders or aerosols (like asthma inhalers), iodine-containing medications, thermometers or alcohol.

Geisinger’s medication takeback team is a coalition of dedicated health care professionals working to elevate the importance of reducing the impacts of unused, unwanted and expired medications on public health, including drug addiction and environmental impacts. The team works year-round to encourage to the utilization of medication takeback boxes as the safest and most efficient way to securely dispose of medications.

Two St. Clair Restaurants Pass Follow Up Inspections

In the past couple weeks, news had circulated about two St. Clair restaurants that recently received bad inspection reports from the Department of Agriculture and were considered out of compliance.  After follow up inspections were done, both have now passed.

The first inspection that took place was on Vito's Coal Fire, located in Coal Creek Plaza on September 25, 2019.  The restaurant received 17 violations and was considered "Out of Compliance", the report included based off the inspection and violations, the "Person in Charge" did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of the PA Food Code.

A follow up inspection was completed on October 3, 2019 where the restaurant received zero violations and was again considered "In Compliance".

The second restaurant was the Uma Hibachi Steakhouse also located in the Coal Creek Plaza, with an inspection that took place on October 8, 2019.

That report had shown that "rodent-like" droppings had been found inside a small outside dry storage shed among the other violations ruling the restaurant "Out of Compliance".

A follow up inspection on the previous report was completed on October 16, 2019 and the restaurant was deemed "In Compliance" only reporting back one violation of "Old Food Debris" in a deep fry area.

The PA Department of Agriculture performs regular inspections of "retail restaurants".  Inspections are considered a 'snapshot' of the day and time of the inspection. An inspection conducted on any given day may not be representative of the overall, long-term cleanliness of an establishment. Also, at the time of the inspection, violations are recorded but are often corrected on site prior to the inspector leaving the establishment.

Reports are publicly available and can be searched anytime by going to

Who has heard the story of the Gordon Mountain Ghost?

A GRUESOME UNSOLVED MURDER ALMOST 90 YEARS IS RESPONSIBLE FOR 1 OF THE COAL REGION'S MOST ENDURING GHOST STORIES. Click LIKE if you heard and/or believe the tale of the "Broad Mountain (or Gordon Mountain) Ghost".

**Editor's Note:  This is a repost of a story written by "Coal Region Connections" from 2014.  We were asked to share this again.  Enjoy!

Today's post was suggested by many page fans & inspired by the book "Coal Country Ghosts--Legends & Lore", written by Charles Adams III. Charlie, a long-time radio veteran at WEEU Reading & writer for the Reading Eagle, has penned over 25 books on ghosts, hauntings, legends, shipwrecks, & train wrecks. More info about Charlie's many books can be found at www.exeterhousebooks.com. We strongly recommend Charlie's works. On April 25, 1925, Palm Sunday, 2 hikers on the Broad Mt. between Gordon & Heckschersville, were walking on an old logging road just off the main road. A flock of crows attracted the hikers to a small clearing where they discovered a horror almost beyond words.

Lying on scorched grass was the mutilated, badly-burned body of a young woman. Her skull was smashed in & there were gashes on her arms & scalp. This murder on the mountain sparked an intense police investigation that yielded little. The perpetrator of this dastardly deed was never discovered. The girl was believed to be between ages 16-20, but she has never been identified to this day. Some say she was a runaway & others speculate she worked at a nearby "house of ill repute".

It has been said her translucent, ghostly figure roams the forest in the area of where the body was discovered. Some folks say their car headlights have dimmed traveling over the Broad Mt., while others claim "spirit energies" have shut down car engines & radios.

For decades, thousands have flocked to the Broad Mt. hoping to catch a glimpse of the restless spirit. Traffic jams on the Broad Mt. were reported especially around Halloween, the nights of a full moon, & on the anniversary of the murder.

It's also reported years ago that a former Gordon area car dealer & 2 buddies embellished spirit sighting reports by putting up bed sheets & tying mannequins to trees. Paranormal investigators have combed the area & have shared mixed reviews about the area.

Halloween is less than a week away. Have we "intrigued" you enough for you to make a pilgrimage to the Broad Mt. between Gordon & Heckshersville? We can not guarantee you will see a spirit, but the fall foliage on the mountain should be spectacular in the coming weeks as hinted in the photo below.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced Thursday that Josiah Ferrebee, age 23, of Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, was sentenced on October 22, 2019, to 15 years’ imprisonment followed by five years’ supervised release by Senior U.S. District Court Judge James M. Munley, for production and attempted to production of child pornography.
According to United States Attorney David J. Freed, Ferrebee previously admitted to persuading a 14-year-old female from the state of Michigan to take sexually explicit images of herself and send them to him via the internet. Ferrebee admitted that after he persuaded the minor to take and send some initial images to him, he threatened to post those images online unless she sent him more sexually explicit images of herself, which she did. Ferrebee committed the crime—what some have termed “sextortion”—in January 2016, when he was 19-years-old.

Ferrebee must also comply with the requirements of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.

The matter was investigated by the Department of Homeland Security and the Pennsylvania State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Francis P. Sempa and Jenny P. Roberts prosecuted the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys' Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims. Skook Grilled Cheese Conquered; Competitive Eater Finishes New Monstrous Food Challenge

A competitive eater, who was the first to attempt the new "Skook Grilled Cheese Challenge" completed it Thursday night in Pottsville in just under 20 minutes.

On Thursday evening, The Wheel Restaurant in Pottsville held a special event where they invited Randy Santel, a well known competitive eater who has completed various eating challenges. In the 9 years that Randy has been eating professionally he has completed 794 food challenges in all 50 states and 36 different countries prior to Thursday's attempt.

Randy was be the first person to attempt Wheel’s newly invented “Skook Grilled Cheese Challenge”.

The challenge is comprised homemade ingredients from around Schuylkill County including 2 slices of 12-inch by 12-inch bread home made from Minersville bakery, 6 different types of cheese equaling over 1lb, 1lb of local favorite Kowalonek’s Kielbasa, and 10 of Mrs. T’s delicious Pierogies.

In addition to the monstrous sandwich those attempting the challenge have to eat a bowl of Wheel’s tomato bisque soup, 6 homemade croutons, and wash it all down with a 12oz hometown bottle of Yuengling Lager.

The challenge must be completed within 30 minutes.  Should you fail the challenge, you must pay $40 for the meal.  Should you succeed, the meal is free, you receive a t-shirt, and your name goes on the restaurant's hall of fame.

Roughly 100 people attended the event Thursday night in Pottsville to see Santel's attempt.  Santel is well-known on social media and many of his fans arrived early to meet him and get autographs.

Senator Argall stopped by to meet Santel prior to the start of the challenge and also attending was the Mayor of Pottsville, James Muldowney, the Kowalonek Family from Kowalonek's Kielbasy Shop, Shenandoah, the Twardzik Family from Mrs. T's Pierogies, and Bob Krohmer and Diane Mickshaw from the Minersville Bakery.

Attempting the challenge with Santel was Mike Hornacek, of Harrisburg, who is the current record holder of the previous food challenge at the Wheel.  Hornacek was able to complete that challenge in 5 minutes and 40 seconds.

Hornacek is also the reigning winner of the Mrs. T's Pierogie Eating Contest at the 2019 Pottsville on Tap.  During the event held in the summer, he was able to eat 50 pierogis in 3 minutes.

Santel and Hornacek kneeled side-by-side while those who attended watched them chow down their full plates of food.

Santel finished the entire plate, plus the beer in 18 minutes and 6 seconds.  Hornacek was able to finish the sandwich, got through about half the bowl of soup, but was unable to finish.

Afterwards, Santel said "There as not one part of the meal he didn't like, he loved the whole thing".

"Grilled Cheese Challenges are one of my favorite kinds of challenges", added Santel.

When asked what he would tell others thinking of attempting the challenge, "Just make sure your body is trained and ready to eat that much food".

Anyone get attempt the challenge anytime during regular hours.

Schuylkill IU 29 Offering Student Resource Officer Training

Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 (IU29) is partnering with the National Association of Student Resource Officers (NASRO) to offer the 5-Day, 40 hour Basic Student Resource Officer NASRO Training at the Mar Lin location.

This course educates law enforcement officers about the unique circumstances of functioning as a police officer within a school setting and also includes discussions about problem solving and teaching skills. Stacey Collis, an approved NASRO Instructor, based in Colorado, will be facilitating the training.

The NASRO Training is mandated for all Student Resource Officers by Act 67 of 2019 (Act 67), which went into effect August 31, 2019. Act 67 amends Article XIII-C of the Pennsylvania School Code and makes updates to Pennsylvania’s school safety laws, specifically regarding the training and credentials for school resource officers (SROs), school police officers (SPOs), and school security guards. This mandated training must be completed by February 2020. “Meeting the requirements of Act 67 has been challenging for school districts and law enforcement offices across the commonwealth due to the time commitment of the training, the cost of instruction, and the need to travel for the specialized training. IU29 is pleased to offer this service locally,” said Dr. Gregory Koons, Executive Director of IU29.

“Fifteen participants, representing school districts and law enforcement offices from throughout the county, are currently registered for this training”, said Barb Wilkinson, Supervisor of School Improvement and District Support Consultant, who coordinated bringing this training to the county.

Schuylkill Community Shows Support for Injured Spartan Quarterback

North Schuylkill's quarterback was injured Friday night after a hard hit during their game with Pottsville.

A lot was on the line Friday night, when North Schuylkill faced Pottsville Area during Week 10 of the regular high school football season.

Ghosh Field at Spartan Stadium was filled to capacity on both the home and away sides with parents and fans who wanted to see their team take home the Schuylkill League Division 1 title.

The packed stadium went silent though during a scary moment during the 3rd quarter with 6:10 left on the clock, the team's quarterback, Jaden Leiby, #6, went down during a tackle and never got back up.

The game was stopped for roughly 10-15 minutes while team doctors from St. Lukes and members from the Washington Ambulance tended to Leiby.

Leiby was eventually put on a stretcher and raised his hand to the crowd, while being surrounded by his concerned teammates, as he was loaded into the ambulance.

Leiby was transported to Memorial Field in Ashland where he was flown to area hospital.

As of 11:00am, Saturday, no information has been released on his condition by the family or school district.

We will have more information when it's available.

Schuylkill County communities have shown a lot of support behind Jaden, as shown below
