State Rep. Neal P. Goodman and state Sen. David Argall announced Monday that Blaschak Coal Corp. of Mahanoy City has secured a $25,000 grant that will help the company extract rare earth elements and critical materials/minerals from anthracite-based resources.

Rare earth elements and critical materials/minerals are used in electronic, optical and magnetic devices. The lawmakers said China currently produces nearly all these materials, and there is a large demand to have it produced domestically.

“I’m pleased that a local company is helping to make our commonwealth and our country less reliant on a foreign source of these important materials,” said Goodman, D-Schuylkill.

“Using the carbon components of anthracite as an industrial mineral provides further avenues for use, and I am pleased to see Blaschak Coal look at anthracite as more than a commercial and residential heating fuel source,” said Argall, R-Schuylkill/Berks.

Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania provided the grant. Blaschak, which has mines in Schuylkill and Luzerne counties, has partnered with Lehigh University’s Energy Research Center to develop a process to extract these materials from anthracite mine water.

According to Ashland Police Chief Gerard Daley, around 3:00pm Monday, police were dispatched to the even side of the 1300 Block of Centre Street in the borough for a report of dogs fighting.

When Daley arrived on scene, he was informed that 3 dogs were fighting inside one of the homes.

At the time, Daley was informed that a woman, and 3 children that reside in the home were in the backyard.  Daley found the woman in the backyard with bite wounds on her arm.

The woman told police that only two of the children were outside with the third child, an infant, still being on the third floor of the home.

Ashland Firefighter Philip Groody Jr. climbed to the 3rd floor of the home, went in through a window and retrieved the infant.

Groody passed the child to Chief Daley through a second story window down to safety.

After the child was rescued, a male owner of the home arrived and secured the dogs in different rooms.

Dog Warden Hine was contacted by police and will follow up on the incident.

The woman was reported to be the only person injured and was treated by EMS.

Ashland Police Officer Weikel, Ashland EMS, and members of the Washington and American Hose Fire Departments assisted at the scene.

Minersville Man Arrested for Sexual Assault of 12 Year Old Girl

A Minersville man was arrested last week for allegedly sexually assaulting a 12 year old girl in Pottsville.

According to Pottsville Police Chief Richard J. Wojciechowsky, on Wednesday October 16, 2019 Brandon Kyle Mohl, 30, of Minersville was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Reiley on charges filed by Det. Joseph Welsh charging him with Sexual Abuse of Children, Unlawful Contact with a Minor, Obscene and other Sexual Materials and Performances, and Corruption of Minors.

The arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by Welsh after the Pottsville Bureau of Police was informed that a 12 year old Pottsville juvenile had divulged to her guardian that she had been sexually abused by Mohl multiple times within the city.

Police were provided with a cellular phone that belonged to the victim and contained inappropriate photographs of Mohl in various stages of undress as well as a text conversation between Mohl and the victim that was sexual in nature.

The investigation included several interviews, search warrants and evidence seizures, and a forensic examination of a cellular phone seized from Mohl’s former residence at 1748 W. Market Street Pottsville.

The forensic examination of the communication device was completed at the Harrisburg Pa State Police lab and produced incriminating evidence against Mohl.

Following his arraignment, Mohl was committed to the Schuylkill County Prison after being unable to post $15,000(10%) bail set by MDJ Reiley.

Authorities are investigating a school threat that was made Tuesday.

According to Pottsville Police Chief Richard Wojciechowsky, on Tuesday afternoon the Pottsville Bureau of Police were contacted by the Pottsville Area High School Administration and advised that a handwritten threat had been discovered on a bathroom stall in the high school.

The short printed message stated “3-2-1” and that a “Boom!!” would occur on October 23, 2019.

The Pottsville Police worked along side the PA State Police and the school administration to investigate.

Wojciechowsky, said as a matter of utmost caution the Pottsville Area High School was completely searched and cleared by K-9 units from the PA State Police and Capital Police, along with officers from the Pottsville Bureau of Police and the investigation into the origin of the writing is continuing.

The facility and grounds will be secured for the duration of the evening until class time tomorrow and the PASD administration plans to enact additional safety protocols for the immediate future that will be announced by school officials shortly.
