The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Engineering District 5 announced work began this week to replace the PA 901/Gordon Nagle Trail Bridge and the Beckville Road Bridge in North Manheim Township.

Both bridges traverse the West Branch of the Schuylkill River and are rated as being in poor condition.

Starting this past Wednesday and lasting throughout construction, PA 901 will remain open to traffic. However, traffic is shifted onto a temporary bridge and there will be times when only one direction at a time will be able to go through with flaggers controlling traffic.

Also, River Street will be closed to through traffic between PA 901 and Birch Street, and Mengle Street will be closed to through traffic between PA 901 (at Beckville Road) and PA 901 (at Woodland Drive). River Street through traffic will be detoured on Birch Street and PA 901. Mengle Street through traffic will be detoured on PA 901.

Later in the project the Beckville Road bridge will be closed with passenger vehicle traffic being detoured on Wilder Street, PA 183 and PA 901. There will be a separate truck detour for Beckville Road, with trucks being routed on PA 443, PA 61 and PA 183.

Susquehanna Valley Construction Corporation of New Cumberland, Pa., is the general contractor on the $4,949,989 project. The project is anticipated to be complete in November 2020.

The PA 901 Bridge is a steel I-beam bridge that was constructed in 1938. It is 102 feet long and 33.5 feet wide. The new one will be a 41.5-foot-wide, 99-foot-long pre-stressed concrete adjacent box beam bridge. This section of PA 901 has an average daily traffic volume of 11,269 vehicles.

The Beckville Road Bridge is a concrete T-beam bridge that was constructed in 1927. It is 82 feet long and 36 feet wide.
