Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill) and Representative Jerry Knowles (R-Schuylkill) announced a grant on Monday from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) that will finance repairs to 13 sections of deteriorated highway in Kline Township.

The numerous improvements to local roadways supported by the grant will address a variety of safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians.

“These upgrades will play a big role in making travel safer throughout the township, not only for daily residential, commercial, and industrial traffic, but also for walkers, joggers, bicyclists and others who share the benefits of the local transportation infrastructure,” Argall said.

“This funding to make much-needed repairs to our local roadways is just another example of how Act 89 is making our communities better and safer places to live, work and get around,” Knowles said. “I commend everyone at Kline Township for all of their hard work to obtain this $211,667 grant to make improvements to local roadways making them safer for pedestrians, joggers, bicyclists, and drivers that us these highways daily.”

The $211,667 grant was awarded as part of PennDOT’s Multimodal Transportation Fund grant program.

Bob Zimmerman never lost the grace that distinguished his life. Succeeding in business, marrying late, blending a family, his quiet smile shone through all of life’s twists and turns.

He died on January 28, 2019 at Carmel Hills Living Facility following a lengthy illness. Bob was 88 years old. Everyone fortunate to have know him will tell you that not even dementia could take away his good cheer or abiding Christian faith.

A native of Tamaqua, he was a son of the late Walter and Emma (nee Leiby) Zimmerman of the Lewistown Valley and a 1947 Tamaqua High School graduate.

Bob served in the Army during the Korean War. His nose for numbers led him to become a CPA. Bob worked in several positions before spending seventeen fruitful years as Vice President/Treasurer with SKF USA. He was all business, except at lunch, where he often played a little bridge. He accomplished more in his career than he ever would have dreamed. Building a family, however, came first, even if it took a little longer than usual.

Bob and Barb Zimmerman, both single again, met in 1989 at a Singles Adult Bible Study. Their courtship was capped by marriage three years later. He was 62, she was 48, and their life together flourished. Self-confessed nomads, he retired, she gave up the children’s/maternity shop she co-owned, and they lived in Pennsylvania and several places across the South before settling down in Charlotte in 2003. The Zimmermans then began the journey of blending their two families.

Bob is survived by his wife, Barb, who defined for years what it means to be a loving caregiver after dementia caused by several neurological diseases changed everything for them.

He is also survived by children, Eric Zimmerman and his wife, Teresa, of Conover, NC, Karen Swain and her husband, Jim, of Harrisburg, PA, and Ann Hoffer and her husband, Marv, of Mt. Joy, PA. Bob was one of four brothers.

He is predeceased by Ken (Gloria) and Floyd (Peggy); and is survived by one brother Ron (Peggy). Five grandchildren and several great grandchildren filled his heart as well. Beloved, as well, in his life were Barb’s children, Todd Kalish (Traci) of Columbus, GA and Kurt Kalish of Savannah, GA – and five more beloved grandchildren.

A memorial service celebrating Mr. Zimmerman’s life will be held at 11AM on February 5, 2019 in Church at Charlotte, 2500 Carmel Road with The Rev. Jeff Alexander presiding. The family will greet friends and neighbors at the clubhouse at The Cottages at Carolina Place, 9915 Bishops Gate Blvd., Pineville, NC following the service. A private graveside service was held on February 2, 2019 at Zion Cemetery of the Lewistown Valley. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes a gift in his honor be received by Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, 7845 Little Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28226.

Joseph S. Vinglinsky, 83, of Port Carbon, passed away Saturday, February 2nd, at St. Joseph's Medical Center, Reading.

Born in Auburn on May 25, 1935, he was a son of the late John & Helen (Santella) Vinglinsky.

In addition to his parents, Joseph is also preceded in death by his brother, John Vinglinsky.

He is survived by his loving wife, Grace A. (Daubenspeck) Vinglinsky, whom he married June 12, 1971.

Joseph was formerly employed as a union carpenter, and had served in the U. S. Army Reserves.

Services will be privately held at the family's convenience.

Senate Committee Approves Legislation to Amend Lieutenant Governor Candidate Selection Process

$

0
On Tuesday, the Senate State Government Committee approved legislation, which would amend the state’s constitution to permit candidates for governor to choose their lieutenant governor candidate after the primary election – a process that mirrors how presidential candidates currently select their vice presidential running mates.

Senator David G. Argall (R-Berks/Schuylkill), the prime sponsor of Senate Bill 133, extended his gratitude to the committee for its bipartisan support, noting the importance of such reform in Pennsylvania. “A leadership team can’t be separated into two warring factions that ignore each other,” Argall said. “It’s plain and simple: Pennsylvania’s residents deserve to have their top two leaders of the executive branch function as a team in order to best represent their interests.”

Pennsylvania’s constitutional amendment process requires that the proposal be approved by the House and the Senate during the same legislative session in which it was introduced, followed by a re-approval of the House and Senate in the next legislative session in 2021 before it is placed on the ballot for the approval of Pennsylvania’s voters.

The bill will now move to the full Senate for consideration.

Five people were indicted for conspiring to distribute drugs into Schuylkill, Luzerne, and Lackawanna counties.

On Tuesday, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced that William Terron, age 35, of Reading, Francheska Quinones, age 26, of Reading, Amanda Boyle, age 36, of Sweet Valley, Rudolph Ford, age 30, of Olyphant, and Adam Holcomb, age 35, of Shickshinny, Pennsylvania were indicted on December 11, 2018, by a federal grand jury for conspiring to distribute methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The indictment was unsealed following the arrests of the defendants.

According to United States Attorney David J. Freed, the indictment alleges that defendants conspired to distribute more than 500 grams of methamphetamine, more than 100 grams of heroin, and more than 500 grams of cocaine in Schuylkill, Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties between January 2017 and the present. One hundred grams of heroin is the equivalent of approximately 4,000 individual doses of heroin.

The matter was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), the Pennsylvania State Police, the Kingston Police Department, the Luzerne County Drug Task Force, and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara is prosecuting the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. The Department of Justice reinvigorated PSN in 2017 as part of the Department’s renewed focus on targeting violent criminals, directing all U.S. Attorney’s Offices to work in partnership with federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement and the local community to develop effective, locally-based strategies to reduce violent crime.

Indictments are only allegations. All persons charged are presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court.

Couple Facing Charges After Crash in Shenandoah

$

A man and wife will be charged after crashing a vehicle in Shenandoah on Tuesday, then fleeing the scene.

According to Shenandoah Police, on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, around 1:15pm, Officer Stamets was dispatched to 183 Pioneer Road, Shenandoah, to speak to David Havlicek.

Havlicek told police that someone came to work on his vehicle and took the vehicle without permission; however, he told police that he did not know the identity of the male. The vehicle was reported to be a white Ford Explorer.

Not longer after, police received a dispatched for a vehicle collision located in the 700 Block of East Centre Street involving a white SUV.

When emergency personnel arrived, they found a White Ford Explorer that had crashed through the side of a concrete garage but the driver of the vehicle had fled the scene.

Police investigated and located credit cards, an access card, and a Pennsylvania identification card which were lying in the center console with the name, Caleisha B. Havlicek.

Caleisha Havlicek was later identified as David Havlicek's wife.

Based on the position of the vehicle and markings in the grass prior to striking the garage, police believe it appeared the vehicle was traveling westbound into Shenandoah when it lost control, crossing the double yellow and opposite lane of travel. The vehicle proceeded in the grass and nearly struck a telephone pole before traveling up a slight incline in the yard and colliding with the concrete block of the garage. The vehicle suffered extensive front end damage.

As part of the investigation, Officer Stamets left the scene of the accident and returned to 183 Pioneer Road to speak with David Havlicek.

Havlicek told the Officer that he met a male who works on cars on a mobile app called "LetGo".

He reported that he messaged him utilizing the LetGo application; however, the post and messages were deleted.

Havlicek said they are gone because the male deleted the post.

He also said that he never gave the male permission to drive the vehicle.

The statement provided was not consistent with Officer Stamets investigation and explained that to Havlicek.

Havlicek then admitted the vehicle was not stolen and he provided a false story.

Havlicek initially reported that he was operating the vehicle during the collision.

Officer Stamets explained how the seat was positioned and that it would not be possible for him to fit.

Caleisha Havlicek then told police that she was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. Caleisha also told police that she has a suspended license.

The Havliceks then told police that Caleisha was driving with David in the front passenger seat and their two children, ages 2 and 4 were in the back seat. Caleisha told police she was traveling westbound when she began to lose control of the Explorer. She feared that she was going to strike the telephone pole but just missed it and then struck the side of the building.

Caleisha reported that she suffered a leg injury in the crash,  and David and the two children were not harmed.

The Havliceks will be charged by Shenandoah Police.
