Special Egg Hunt Scheduled for Children with Disabilities

$

A community in Schuylkill County has come together to create an egg hunt for children with special needs.

Last year, Dustin, a 7 year old boy with autism attended an egg hunt  in Schuylkill County with other children and due to his disability, was unable to get any eggs. He did not have adequate time and the noise of the horn scared him due to a sensory issue.

With the lack of events geared towards individuals with disabilities, Dustin’s mother gathered some friends and sprung into action.  Together they have been planning an egg hunt for kids with special needs for several months.

The event, called Dustin's Special Egg Hunt, is scheduled for April 13th, 2019 and will be held at the South Cass Fire Co grounds just outside Minersville and is open to all Schuylkill County children 16 and under who suffer from a disability.

There will be 3 separate areas with the specific needs of the children in mind.  The event will be limited to children that are hearing or vision impaired, autistic, wheelchair bound, or have down syndrome.

Each child is guaranteed to receive eggs and have an equal opportunity for larger prizes.

Each participant will also receive an Easter Bag sponsored by Mechanicsville Game and Fish and a voucher for food and drink sponsored by Aaron’s Sales and Lease of Pottsville at the event. Mascots and characters in will also be in attendance, along with emergency apparatus on display, and some craft/decorating/coloring areas as well.

Registration forms and waivers are available on our Facebook page “Dustin’s Special Egg Hunt". This event is limited to 300 children and each participant needs to submit a registration form and waiver by March 17th.

Registration forms can be found at:  https://www.facebook.com/events/655708538197710/

Egg hunt starts at 1pm and each group will have a time and area to register and start.

The schedule for events are as followed:
 - Vision impaired 1:00pm start
 - Hearing/Autistic/Down Syndrome 145pm start
 - Wheelchair bound 2:30pm start

They ask that participants register an hour before the start of their hunt.

Organizers are also looking for several sponsors for the event.

If you are interested with your business or in memory/honor of someone, please reach out to us on the Facebook page “Dustin’s Special Egg Hunt”.

SCAM ALERT: Pottsville Police Warn Residents About Phone Scam

$

0
The Pottsville Police have issued a warning to City and County residents about a phone scam.

According to Chief Richard Wojiechowsky, the Pottsville Bureau of Police was recently made aware of fraudulent solicitations being made by phone in which the caller claims to be representing a “Police Officers Association” and then attempts to solicit money to help retired officers.

Wojiechowsky says this is not a legitimate organization and the phone numbers the callers are using for identification purposes are fake and randomly generated.

As always, never provide any personal information or credit card numbers over the phone to anyone who has called to solicit money or who claims to be with some type of billing or collection agency.

Instead, terminate the call and take any steps necessary to verify the authenticity of the call.

PENNVEST Funding Approval for Area Infrastructure Project in Hegins and Hubley Townships

Funding for the design portion of the Hegins-Hubley Authority’s sanitary sewer project was approved Wednesday by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST), according to Rep. Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill/Dauphin) and Sen. David Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks).

The Hegins-Hubley Authority sanitary sewer project was approved for $2 million low-interest loan to fund the design, engineering and permitting phases to construct a conveyance and treatment system for the areas of Hegins and Hubley townships, which are experiencing failure of on-lot systems. The proposed sewer system will consist of 166,610 feet of gravity sewer mains, 21,564 feet of low-pressure mains and seven pump stations. The wastewater treatment plant will have the capacity to treat 600,000 gallons per day.

"This funding will certainly go a long way in helping to fund the sewer project,” said Tobash. “The grant will enable the township to help make the necessary upgrades and meet additional customer demand. It will hopefully allow businesses to grow and create a number of new jobs.”

“Through everyone’s collective efforts, the authority was awarded this grant to design a new system that will provide efficient wastewater treatment that replaces non-functioning on-lot systems that were polluting the environment,” said Argall.

PENNVEST provides grants and low-interest loans to communities across the Commonwealth for sewer, stormwater and water projects. The projects contribute to improving Pennsylvania’s environment and the health of its people, while also providing opportunities for economic growth and jobs for Pennsylvania workers.

“Transportation is critical to connecting communities and economies, and we are an important partner in bringing progress across the state,” Governor Wolf said. “These investments will improve overall mobility and safety while bolstering commercial projects.”

Reflecting Governor Wolf’s and PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards’ commitment to improving locally owned infrastructure, several of the projects will also help local governments address bridges and roadways in need of repair or replacement.

“Whether we’re making roadways more accessible to all means of travel or creating new connections for businesses investing in our communities, transportation is integral to our quality of life,” Richards said. “These projects will bring long-lasting improvements across the state.”

PennDOT evaluated the applications and made selections based on such criteria as safety benefits, regional economic conditions, the technical and financial feasibility, job creation, energy efficiency, and operational sustainability.

Schuylkill County:
  • County of Schuylkill— $674,720 for full depth reclamation, shoulder restoration, guiderail replacement, replacement or restoration of storm drainage features, and repaving of the park-and-ride lot on Airport Road.
  • Kline Township— $211,667 to improve existing transportation infrastructure assets and enhance pedestrian safety through the repair of 13 sections of deteriorated highways used for residential, commercial, and industrial traffic throughout the township.
