Spartans Thank Veterans for Service During Program

Students from the North Schuylkill School District thanked local veterans during their annual Veteran's Day Program.

The program was held Tuesday morning in the high school auditorium with the entire student body in attendance.

Ten local veterans attended. Tom Dando, Daniel Weikel, Paul Snyder, Charles Hughes, Fred Spieles, Ron Wallace, Harry Haas, Francis O'Connell, and Larry Helwig.

The program was opened by Principal Ken Roseberry who introduced Social Studies teacher Marc Wislosky who led the program.

Wislosky spoke to students on the history of Veteran's Day, how it came to be after World War I, and originally being called Armistice Day.  He also spoke on the importance of recognizing our veterans.

"There are over twenty million veterans that come from all walks of life.  They are parents, children, grandparents, friends, neighbors, and co-workers and are important parts of their communities." said Wislosky.

"Today, we recognize Veterans, but everyday we should be thankful for their sacrifice". added Wislosky.

Wislosky introduced four students who were chosen for their writing on what Veteran's Day meant to them.

Those four students were Jack Kempsey, Gracie Orosco, Zeb Thompson, and Lexi Green.

"I don't think any amount of gratitude could equal what these men and women have done for us.", said Kempsey.

"The reason you are all sitting here today is because of these fine men sitting before us.  Without veterans and active military members we wouldn't have the right to an education.  Everything you know right now and will know in the future goes back to people sacrificing their time and lives to all you to have opportunities such as education." said Orosco.

"Ever since it was formed, the United States has served as the global beacon for natural rights and liberty."  said Thompson.

"We all owe an enormous debt to those that ensure it stays that way" added Thompson.

"To me [Veteran's Day], is day to honor and thank all the amazing men and women who have the courage that so many of us do not.  Let's always thank anyone who served from active to military veterans for the sacrifices they have made." said Green.

Wislosky then turned the program over to the veterans who introduced themselves, their rank, and when they served the military.

"I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank Mr. Roseberry, the staff, administration, and students for taking the time to honor us today" said Thomas Dando.

The program was closed by the high school chorus, along with the Treblemakers who sang "God Bless America".

After the program, as each student and staff member left the auditorium, they shook the hands of the veterans and thanked them for their service.

This #GivingTuesday, the Ringtown Area Library will celebrate giving by giving back to donors.

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this year’s #GivingTuesday will take place on November 27th and will kick off the giving season by inspiring people to collaborate and give back.

When you donate $25 or more to the Ringtown Area Library on #GivingTuesday, the library will return the favor and give you a free gift, your choice of an Old White Church art print, a set of 3 Old White Church greeting cards, or a Ringtown Library stemless wine glass. Donate $50 or more and choose any two gifts, while supplies last.

Founded in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y – a community and cultural center in New York City − #GivingTuesday inspired millions of people to give back and support the causes they believe in.

Those who are interested in joining the Ringtown Area Library’s #GivingTuesday initiative can visit www.ringtownlibrary.org. For more details about the #GivingTuesday movement, visit the #GivingTuesday website (www.givingtuesday.org), Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/GivingTuesday) or follow @GivingTues and the #GivingTuesday hashtag on Twitter.
