If you were a massage therapy client of the Spa at McCann and you have been lamenting the closure of that business, you are in luck.

The staff from the former Spa at McCann have branched out to a new business; The Spa at the Plaza, recently opened in Kings Plaza in Minersville.

“The same staff are offering the same services in the new location, 14 Kings Village Plaza in Minersville, at very close to the same price point,” said Spa Coordinator, Erica Boyer.

Customers have been pleasantly surprised that we have been able to keep prices for services very close to the former rates and through a partnership with Berks Technical Institute (BTI), we continue to offer services performed by massage therapy students at the student rates, said Boyer.

According to Shannon Brennan, former McCann Administrator and Owner of The Spa at the Plaza, “When we realized that McCann would close, starting a new business seemed like an opportunity to preserve some jobs, while continuing to make reasonably priced massage therapy services available to the community. said Brennan” After an exhaustive search, the new location in Kings Village Plaza was selected. The new Spa offers 5 treatment rooms, customer loyalty discounts, senior discounts, and a variety of seasonal specials; including the new and very popular CBD Massage.

A ribbon cutting will be scheduled early next month. For more information, individuals may follow the new spa on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pottsvillemassagetherapyspa/?ref=bookmarks or call (570) 581-8868.

Schuylkill Haven Woman Pleads Guilty to Methamphetamine Trafficking

A Schuylkill Haven woman has plead guilty to have taken part in a methamphetamine trafficking conspiracy.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced Thursday that Laverne Schaeffer, age 46, of Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty on October 30, 2018 before U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani to conspiracy to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine.

According to United States Attorney David J. Freed, Schaeffer admitted to conspiring with her husband, Ernest Schaeffer and others to distribute methamphetamine to customers in the Schuylkill County area. Schaeffer committed the offense between July 2016 and May 24, 2017, in Schuylkill County and elsewhere.

Schaeffer was indicted by a grand jury along with three other persons in August 2017. Schaeffer’s husband Ernest previously pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.

As part of a plea agreement, Schaeffer agreed to forfeit dozens of acres of real estate in Schuylkill County—property that Schaeffer and her husband used to store and distribute methamphetamine.

Judge Mariani ordered a presentence report to be completed and sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pennsylvania State Police, and local police from Schuylkill County. Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa is prosecuting the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. Attorney General Jeff Sessions reinvigorated PSN in 2017 as part of the Department’s renewed focus on targeting violent criminals, directing all U.S. Attorney’s Offices to work in partnership with federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement and the local community to develop effective, locally-based strategies to reduce violent crime.

A Mount Carmel man was injured in a crash that closed Interstate 81 on Thursday.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Jonestown, the crash occurred around 5:45am in the Southbound lanes of Interstate 81 near Milemark 105.3 in Tremont Township.

Police say Gerard Reichwein, 21, of Mount Carmel, operating a Jeep Wrangler and Eduardo Rodriguez, 51, of Scranton, operating a Freightliner were traveling south when Reichwein impacted the tractor trailer in the rear.

The Jeep Wrangler became stuck under the Freightliner's trailer.  Rodgriguez was able to pull the tractor trailer to the side of the rode dragging the Wrangler with it and coming to a final stop near Milemark 105.0.

It took crews nearly an hour to extricate Reichwein from the vehicle where he was transported to the Hampton Inn near Pine Grove and flown to Hershey Medical Center with unknown injuries.

The Jeep Wrangler was heavily damaged.  The Freightliner sustained minor damaged to the trailer and Rodriguez was no harmed.

Police say cited that Reichwein was following too closely.

Interstate 81 southbound was closed from the Tremont Exit to the Ravine Exit for nearly 2 hours.

On Friday, judging took place for PennDOT's "Paint the Plow" program at the PennDOT Maintenence Facility for Schuylkill County in Schuylkill Haven.

"Paint the Plow" is a community outreach program in which students are invited to paint a PennDOT snow plow blade with original artwork to represent their individual school. In addition to being visible when in full service during the winter-weather months, the blades will be used within the school's community to enhance public awareness, promote safety, and foster greater appreciation of both PennDOT and the school's art program.

The five plows from Schuylkill County School Districts included North Schuylkill, Shenandoah Valley, Mahanoy Area, Tamaqua Area, and Pine Grove Area.

High School had put hours and hours of work into their project.

"Our students put 45-50 hours of work into their plow",  said Kerri Herring, North Schuylkill art teacher.

"Students worked on the project as part of their portfolio class and after school to complete it", added Herring.

Others also used the plow to show school spirit.

"The students incorporated the Cardinal because they wanted to show their school spirit.  I'm very proud of what they did."  said Pine Grove art teacher Megan Bux.

PennDOT invited the members of the media to Friday's event as judges.  Attending were Skook News, Republican Herald, Shenandoah Sentinel, and South Schuylkill News.  The Republican Herald opted not to participate in the judging.

Judging was based on a 1-10 Scale in five categories including tie to safety, creativity, overall appearance, originality, and theme incorporation.

The theme for the contest was "Don't Crowd the Plow".

"The program has worked great across Pennsylvania, but this is a first for Schuylkill County", said Sean Brown, District 5 Safety Officer.

"The Don't Crowd the Plow theme is a great way to get the word out about plow safety", added Brown.

The winners of the contest, as well as the "Fan Favorite", will be announced early next week.
