Mahanoy Area Dedicates Field to Football Coach Icon

On Friday night, during their game against the Shenandoah Valley Blue Devils, Mahanoy Area renamed their field to honor a long time football coach.

From the late 1970's, through the 80's, and to the beginning of the 90's, the football program at Mahanoy Area was led by Coach Bill "Faz" Fazio.

With over 14 years of coaching under his belt at Mahanoy Area, 1978 to 1992, Coach Fazio, 81, led his team to back to back Eastern Conference championships, 87 wins and left a lasting mark on the players he coached, those who coached under him, the school district and the Golden Bear community.

At half time during Friday night's game, a special ceremony was held dedicating the field in his honor.

During the ceremony, Mahanoy Area Superintendent Joie Green presented Fazio with a plaque, before pointing everyone to the scoreboard, where it was revealed the new name of the field as, "William 'Coach Faz' Fazio Field".

"Coach Faz" as everyone calls him, credited his success on the coaches that worked under him and the students that played for him.

"We wouldn't of had the success we had without the best coaches in Schuylkill County and players that played for me throughout the years.  They are the real heroes". said Fazio.

As half-time ended, the 2018 Mahanoy Area Golden Bears returned to the field, and gathered on the sidelines and huddled around "Coach Faz" to say "thank you".

On Friday at North Schuylkill Elementary, Bloomsburg University students were able to sharpen their teaching skills in front of a classroom.

The reading day is annual tradition, which was started in 2013, where college students visit the 4th, 5th, and 6th Graders to use the skills they learned as part of their Department of Exceptionality Program.  For some university students, this is their first time in front of an actual classroom.

The college students were each given a children's book to develop a lesson plan from.

The day is coordinated between Bloomsburg University Professor Kali Fedor and North Schuylkill Elementary's Title I reading specialists Anne Tarantelli, Beth Huntsinger, and Megan Gierka.

Ashland American Hose Thanks Those Who Helped Them Over the Years

$

The American Hose Company in Ashland thanks those that have given to them over the years.

In Schuylkill County, all the fire companies are volunteer, which means they rely on their communities to support them.  All the support and funds that the fire departments receive, goes towards new equipment, vehicles, and other items to keep the community safe.

On September 8th, 2018 the American Hose Company in Ashland held their annual Chicken BBQ dinner. The fundraiser sold near 400 platters and helped raise nearly $2,000.

The BBQ dinner was started in the early 2000's by it's members at the time.  All the cooking for the dinner was done "in-house" by department members, with the Women's Auxiliary providing desserts and helping serve.

Members begin preparing the food at 2:00 am to have the platters ready for serving at noon.

As the fundraiser grew each year, the department ran out of room to handle the demand for cooking all of the orders.

What started as cooking the chicken in the backyard of Chief Groody's home now has grown to a permanent pit at Memorial Field in Ashland.  When the pit was first built, members would haul 4 truck loads of block and all the cooking supplies from the firehouse to the field each year.

When the BBQ first began, Gordon Fire Company provided their experience and also let them borrow the cooking equipment that they were unable to afford at the time.

From the start, Groody Catering in Ashland, also assisted.  The American Hose has used Groody's to purchase the food supplies, ingredients, and chickens for the dinner.

When the BBQ was moved to Memorial Field and a bbq pit was built with the permanent roofing, Joseph Woodward, a long-time member, donated a shed to store the supplies. Brian Rich, of Pottsville Materials, provided materials and rock for the shed base, while Ash Resources provided trucks for hauling.  The shed reduced the workload greatly which stopped the hauling of all the cooking equipment and supplies each year.

Chief Groody thanks all of the members of the fire department for their time and dedication over the years as well as the citizens of Ashland and the surrounding communities for purchasing dinners. Without all of the help and support they received over the years, the American Hose Company, wouldn't be where they are today.

The American Hose will have more fundraisers through the rest of 2018 which includes their monthly gun raffle and their Christmas Toy raffle.
