Brush Fire Spreads to Abandoned Garage in Cass Township

A brush fire spread to an abandoned garage in Cass Township Saturday.

Just before noon Saturday, emergency personnel were called to the area near the intersection of Valley Road and Highridge Park Road, Cass Township, for a brush fire.

When crews arrived, they found the brush fire had spread to a nearby abandoned garage.

A tanker task force was called and Valley Road was closed while crews battled the blaze.

Minersville and Gordon fire companies assisted Heckschersville Fire Company along with other units from around Schuylkill County in the tanker task force.

It took crews several hours before bringing both fires under control.

Pauch Jr., Yankowski, Ney and Brennan Victorious at Big Diamond Opener

Results from Big Diamond on Friday, April 13th, 2018.

It was unbelievably warm spring night up in God’s Country as Big Diamond presented their 47th season opener. Standing tall in victory lane on “Schaeffers Motorsports Night” and taking top honors were Billy Pauch Jr after a terrific battle with rival Ryan Godown in the Mattera’s Electrical and General Contracting 358 Modfieds feature race. Youngster Alex Yankowski was the USS Achey Sportsman winner with Kris Ney taking the Savage 61 Roadrunners main event and Elvis Brennan III winning the No Sweat Service Group Street Stock feature.

A great crowd was on hand as the cars took the track for the evening. Despite all of the harsh weather we’ve had over the past few weeks the track was in pretty good condition for a season opener with both an inside and outside groove available for the racers to choose from.

The first feature of the 2018 season to hit the track was for the Savage 61 Roadrunners and it didn’t disappoint as Kris Ney, Mike Reichert and Shawn Mulhall put on a terrific three car battle for the win. Inside, outside Richert and Mulhall tried to get by Ney but with no avail as Kris Ney stood tall in the seat win his first feature of the year. Reichert held on for second with Mulhall in third. Steve Gromis and Matt Ney rounded out the top five.

Next feature up on the docket was the 30-lap, $4000 to win season opener for the mighty Mattera’s Electrical and General Contracting 358 Modifieds. The race did not disappoint as Billy Pauch Jr battled arch-rival Ryan Godown tooth and nail for the last portion of the race to grab the win. For Pauch it was a well-earned victory and the New Jersey driver was happy to get the season started off in a big way at the speedway.

“It was a good way to start the season, this is a good car and it was fast right out of the box. My guys put in a lot of hours and dedication to get this car ready and it all worked out tonight. I couldn’t do this without them. This is a new car right, it was never on the track until tonight and it ran great. I have to thank Bicknell Racing, Morgantini Engines, Bilstein Shocks and all my sponsors for making this all happen.”

The feature started with Frank Yankowski on the pole with Ryan Godown right alongside of him. Yankowski jumped out to lead lap one with Godown putting on the pressure immediately. Just as Godown thought he had Yankowski cleared for the lead on the backstretch the two made contact forcing Godown up over the cushion dropping him back to eighth in the running order.

This put Pauch Jr in second as he started to put pressure on the leader. Just as Pauch Jr took the lead a yellow came out negating the pass thus handing the lead back to Yankowski. It didn’t take long for Pauch to get the lead again as he made the pass on lap 10 and started to pull away. Meanwhile Godown was very fast in his new Searock Fabrications Troyer car and was steadily making his way back to the front passing the likes of Duane Howard, Jeff Strunk and Craig Von Dohren on his way. Godown had worked his way back up into the runner-up spot at the halfway point and now the stage was set for another anticipated Pauch/Godown battle and they did not disappoint.

A lap 21 yellow put the two rivals alongside each other and on the restart Godown made the pass for the lead going into turn one and made it stick. But Pauch was not giving up and one lap later made a bold move coming into turn one to regain the lead. Godown was not giving up either and some contact was made but it was all in the form of hard racing. Pauch was able to hang on and keep the lead but Godown was right there just waiting for Pauch to make a mistake but the former Big Diamond never made that mistake and was able to speed under the checkered flag for the well-earned victory.

“Ryan made nice clean pass on me for the lead there, but we were able to come back and slide back by him to get the lead back. We race each other hard but overall, I think we ran each other clean tonight. Sure, there was some contact but that’s the way it goes sometimes, and we’ll move forward.”

Billy Pauch was your winner with Godown a close second. Craig Von Dohren, Jeff Strunk and Duane Howard rounded out the top five. Finishing sixth thru tenth were Ryan Watt, Rick Laubach, Kevin Beach Jr, Erick Rudolph and Gary Hager.

The USS Achey Sportsman feature was won by thirteen-year-old Alex Yankowski who started on the pole and led all 20 laps enroute to his first ever feature win at the speedway. Yankowski was in total control of the race as the drivers battled hard behind him. A hard crash on lap 18 eliminated some of the top runners as they were trying to catch the leader. On the restart Yankowski was able to stay in front and take the victory. Ken Eckert Jr was second followed by veterans Craig Whitmoyer, Dave Dissinger and Wayne Witmer completing the top five. Doug Hendricks put on quite a show for the fans after starting 20th, Hendricks was making moves on the outside and was up to sixth when something broke forcing him to call it a night.

The No Sweat Service Group Street Stocks were the last feature of the night and Elvis Brennan III took home the top honors after a hard battle with Chris Heller. Brennan III was finally able to get by Heller on lap 16 and take the checkered flag. Following Brennan III and Heller across the line were Mark Berzowski, Dean Hine and Robin Wagner.

Schuylkill County Police Log for 04/16/18

Schuylkill County Police Log for 04/16/18

No Injuries Reported in Crash on Interstate 81 Monday Morning

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville,  the crash occurred around 7:30am in the Northbound lanes of Interstate 81 near Mile Marker 128.7.

Police say Melanie Roy, 44, of Gatineau, Quebec lost control of her Mazda 3 on the wet road way, spun 180 degrees and slid into a ditch.

Roy was not injured in the crash.

PennDOT Announces Traffic Deaths Lowest on Record in 2017

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that traffic deaths in Pennsylvania reached a new low in 2017, dropping to 1,137, the lowest since record keeping began in 1928, and 51 less than 2016.

“Pennsylvania has continued to defy national crash trends by steadily decreasing the number of deaths on our roadways,” PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said. “Our biggest priority continues to be getting the public to their destinations safely through educational outreach, the latest
innovations, effective enforcement and low-cost safety improvements.”

While the number of highway deaths dropped in many types of crashes, there were significant decreases noted in impaired driver, pedestrian, and unrestrained fatalities. Fatalities in impaired driver crashes dropped from 341 in 2016 to 246 in 2017. Unrestrained fatalities also decreased from 408 in 2016 to 378 last year. There were 150 pedestrian deaths in crashes in 2017 compared to
172 in 2016.

Aside from the year-to- year decline, longer term trends also continue to decrease. For example, compared to 2013, there were 71 fewer total traffic deaths, 203 fewer deaths in crashes involving impaired drivers, and 47 fewer unrestrained deaths.

There were some types of crashes which saw fatality increases in 2017. There were 153 fatalities that occurred in crashes involving drivers aged 75 years or older, up from 132 in 2016. Also, fatalities in red-light running crashes increased to 35 from 28 in 2016. Finally, fatalities in work zone crashes
increased from 16 to 19.

The department also recently unveiled additional enhancements to its Pennsylvania Crash Information Tool (PCIT) website, www.dotcrashinfo.pa.gov which uses reportable crash data from law enforcement to assist in reviewing this data. Users can now select a geographic location using a map by using a drawing feature that helps select a specific geographic area, like a public
neighborhood, school or other geographic area, so that the map displays the  reportable crashes for the selected location.

In addition, from 2013 to 2017, PennDOT has invested more than $395 million in Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program funds on 458 unique safety projects.

During that same timeframe, another $50 million was invested in low-cost safety improvements at approximately 3,600 locations. Examples of low-cost safety countermeasures include centerline and edge-line rumble strips, and signing and pavement markings. PennDOT also invests about $20 million annually in federal grant funds for safety education and enforcement efforts statewide.

Governor Wolf Signs Law to Strengthen Protection of Victims of Domestic Violence

Governor Tom Wolf today signed Senate Bill 449, known as Tierne’s law, strengthening protections for victims of domestic violence, and urged the House to pass a package of Senate domestic violence reform bills.

The governor was joined by Tierne’s Law sponsor Senator Camera Bartolotta, Pennsylvania’s Victim Advocate Jennifer Storm, legislators, stakeholders, and members of Tierne’s family.

Tierne Ewing, a victim of domestic violence, was murdered by her estranged husband in 2016 after he had been arrested for domestic abuse, then released.

“We all know the tragic story that led us to take a hard look at our laws, and make this change,” Governor Wolf said. “We mourn Tierne’s loss with her family, and while we can never fix what they’ve had to go through, Tierne’s law will help us prevent senseless and horrible situations like this one from happening to more Pennsylvania families, and will hold perpetrators of domestic violence and abuse accountable for their heinous crimes.

“But there is more to be done, so I urge the House to pass a package of domestic bills, which were approved overwhelmingly in the Senate, including Senate Bill 501, which would fix an arcane law that allows domestic abusers to have access to guns. We know that many domestic abusers use firearms to harm their victims, as was the case with Tierne, who died from a gunshot wound inflicted by her abuser spouse.

“I thank the Senate for its work and ask the House to vote on these commonsense measures now.”

Tierne’s Law allows judges to use risk assessment tools to determine whether the perpetrators of domestic violence pose a continued danger to their victims and provides additional avenues for judges to use these tools when setting bail amounts in domestic abuse cases. Additionally, the law adds strangulation to the list of offenses for which police officers can arrest a perpetrator without a warrant when this offense has been committed against a family member or someone sharing their household.

“Tierne’s senseless death was devastating to all of the friends and family who loved her,” said. Sen. Bartolotta. “Today, we honor her memory with this important step towards protecting domestic violence victims who are still in danger. Clarifying the law regarding the use of risk assessment tools will help more judges keep the most dangerous offenders where they belong – behind bars.”

In addition to signing Tierne’s Law and urging passage of additional domestic violence bills, Governor Wolf recently gave his support for Marsy’s Law to help crime victims, and made a call-to-action for criminal justice reforms that will enhance the efforts of Tierne’s Law by recommending adoption of a single assessment tool model to be used from pretrial until parole completion, and ensuring a correlation between length of probation and risk in order to structure probation lengths that result in better supervision.

This Friday night April 20th, 2018 the Minersville, PA dirt oval will present the 6th annual “Money in the Mountains” big block / small block challenge event.

It will be “No Sweat Service Group” night at the speedway which will culminate with a 40-lap feature event for the Modifies paying $6000 to the winner with $400 to take the green flag. The winner will also receive a guaranteed starting spot for the “Anthracite Assault” Short Track Super Series event scheduled for Tuesday June 5th.

The first MITM race was run in 2013 with Jeff Strunk, the “Bechtelsville Bullet” Jeff Strunk taking the win. In 2014 it was the “Ringoes Rocket” Ryan Godown who bested the competition to take the win. 2015 saw the “Electric Company” Ryan Watt winning his first of two MITM feature events with the other coming last season in 2017. The “Quaker Shaker” Rick Laubach was first under the checkered flag in 2016 taking home the big money.

Noticeably absent from the list of MITM winners are the track’s top two all-time feature event winners Craig Von Dohren and Duane Howard. Von Dohren and Howard would like nothing better to add a win in this special event to their resumes.

The MITM race has typically brought in some of the best in the business to compete for the big money and this race should be no different. Dirt Modified superstars Billy “The Kid” Pauch and the “Sensational One” Jimmy Horton are both expected to be in the field Friday night looking to etch another notch in their belts and take the checkered flag back to New Jersey.

Formers winners Jeff Strunk in the Keystone Racing #126, Ryan Godown in the Searock Fabrications 26, Rick Laubach in the Ryan Kerr #1K along with two-time winner Ryan Watt in the Roberts Racing #14W will all be back hoping to add another win to their already impressive career stats in this special event. Add in opening night winner Billy Pauch Jr in the Kid Racing #15, former Coalcracker winner Doug Manmiller along with second place finisher at Grandview last week Mike Gular in the Terry Fanascht #2A along with the always tough Big Diamond regulars and you end up with a very competitive field of Modifieds all looking to grab the $6000 first place prize.

The rules for this Fridays Money in the Mountains race are as follows: Big and small block engine combinations are permitted to run. Chevrolet/GM, For or Chrysler/Dodge engines ONLY. Aluminum

small blocks are not permitted. Standard or spread/wide bore small-block engines over 450 cubic engines are not permitted.

(max. 363 cubic inches-tolerance is 370 cubic inches); big-blocks: 2,500 lbs. (more than 363 cubic inches, max. 477 cubic inches) & “Big Cubic Inch” or aluminum big-blocks (more than 477 cubic inches): 2,600 lbs. All weights are determined by track scale.

Body: Normal Big Diamond body rules apply, NO sail panels.

This will be a draw event with 24 cars to start the feature event. There will be 75 show-up points given out to all teams.

Also scheduled to compete on Friday night are USS Achey Sportsman cars along with the Savage 61 Roadrunners and the No Sweat Service Group Street Stocks.

General admission for Friday night is $25, Seniors $23. Kids 10 and under are free! Active military with ID are free.

Gates open at 5:30 with warmups getting underway at 7:30

The month of will conclude on Friday night April 27th with a regular show for the Modifieds, Sportsman and Roadrunners. The 600 Modifieds will also be in action with the Street Stocks being given the night off.
