State Police Launch U DRIVE. U TEXT. U Pay Campaign

$

On Thursday, the Pennsylvania State Police announced a new campaign raising the awareness of the deadly risks of texting and driving.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, for the past decade, distracted driving has taken the Nation’s roads by storm, endangering not only those who drive distracted, but also those drivers’ passengers, adjacent vehicle occupants, and nearby pedestrians.

Distracted driving takes many forms: talking on or manipulating the phone, adjusting the radio, applying makeup, eating, or drinking can all distract a driver from the essential task of safe driving.

However, texting is one of the most common, pervasive forms of distracted driving, and too many drivers are succumbing to this deadly—and often illegal—habit. That’s why the Pennsylvania State Police is partnering with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to raise awareness about the potentially deadly risks from texting while driving. From April 12th to April 16th, 2018, as part of the U Drive. U Text. U Pay. campaign, law enforcement will be watching closely for distracted drivers.

The Pennsylvania State Police offered some frightening stats:
  • According to NHTSA, 3,450 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2016.
  • In 2016, 9.2 percent of fatal crashes in 2016 were reported as distraction-related.
  • Texting while driving has become an especially problematic trend among millennials. According to NHTSA, young drivers 16 to 24 years old have been observed using handheld electronic devices while driving at higher rates than older drivers since 2007.
  • Nine percent of drivers 15 to 19 years old who were involved in fatal crashes were reported as being distracted at the time of the crash in 2016. This age group has the largest percentage of drivers who were distracted at the time of a fatal crash.
  • Handheld cellphone use while driving is highest among 15- to 29-year-old drivers, but female drivers are most at-risk for being involved in a fatal crash involving a distracted driver.
  • Female drivers with a cell phone have been more likely to be involved in fatal distracted-driving crashes as compared to male drivers every year since 2012.
Safety Tips for Driving from the Pennsylvania State Police:
  • If you are expecting a text message or need to send one, pull over and park your car in a safe location. Once you are safely off the road, it is safe to text.
  • Designate your passenger as your “designated texter.” Allow them access to your phone to respond to calls or messages.
  • Do not engage in social media scrolling or messaging while driving.
  • Cell phone use can be habit-forming. Struggling to not text and drive? Put the cell phone in the trunk or back seat of your vehicle until you arrive at your final destination.
Put Your Phone Away or Get Ready to Pay:
  • Don’t follow the trends. When you get behind the wheel, be an example to your family and friends by putting your phone away. Texting and driving isn’t a “cool” or trendy behavior—it’s a deadly and, oftentimes, illegal activity that could kill you, a loved one, a friend, or a stranger.
  • In 47 States, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, texting while driving is an illegal, ticketable offense.
  • If your friends text while driving, tell them to stop. If your passengers catch you texting while driving and tell you to put your phone away, put it down.
  • No one likes to be called out by a friend for doing something wrong, but it’s even worse to get caught by law enforcement and end up paying a fine.
  • Remember, when you get behind the wheel, put your phone away!

PA Lottery Expands Debit, Mobile Pay Options

The Pennsylvania Lottery is expanding debit and mobile pay options to make playing games more convenient for the growing number of players who carry little cash.

“Just like any business, the Pennsylvania Lottery wants to make it easy for customers to make purchases in a way they find convenient,” said Lottery Executive Director Drew Svitko. “The older Pennsylvanians who benefit from Lottery sales are counting on us to modernize and stay competitive in an evolving retail environment.”

Over the past year, the Lottery has been adding debit PIN pads to many of its newer touch-screen, self-service vending units and at stores where games are sold from the counter. More than 2,100 sales counters and 400 touch-screen vending units now have the equipment.

The PIN pads also accept mobile payment options including Google Pay and Apple Pay, as well as cards with “tap to pay” capability.

“Research shows that carrying cash has fallen out of favor with many consumers,” Svitko added. “One study showed nearly half of those asked carry less than $20 in their wallets.”

While the Lottery’s point-of-sale PIN pads do not accept credit, nothing in law or policy prevents credit card sales of lottery games. Retailers may accept credit cards at their discretion.

“It’s good business for the Lottery to offer the flexibility that today’s consumers want,” Svitko said. “No matter how they pay, we ask players to play responsibly and within their means.”

Pet Carnival Becomes Annual Event

The high school kids that created Kids Fight for Animals (KFFA) group in the Tri-Valley area are once again planning a carnival for pets and their owners.

The event will be held at the Valley View Park in Valley View, PA, on Saturday, June 23, 2018 from 11:00am to 4:00pm.

Last year’s event drew hundreds of pets and their owners, showcasing regional vendors offering a variety of pet-related merchandise and services. Also in attendance were area animal rescue organizations, including Speranza Animal Rescue, caretakers of Libre, a rescue dog who went on to change animal abuse regulations across the country.

This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than the first. States Christine Lettich, mother of Hailey, KFFA’s founder, “The girls are really stepping up to the challenge this year and are excited about making this event even more fun for pets and their owners. Last year we had animals of all kinds, including a goat. We could see the excitement in pet owner’s eyes at being able to come to such an event with their pets. We hope this year will be even more educational and fun.”

In addition to new and returning vendors, the 2018 Annual Pet Carnival will also feature nine rescue groups, including Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA, Hillside SPCA, Mommy & Me Rescue, It Takes a Heart Kitten Zoo, Back in Black Rescue, and Paws for a Cause PA. Anthracite Animal Clinic will sponsor this year’s pet agility course and plenty of carnival games will be available for humans.

Food will also be plentiful at this year’s carnival. The Tri-Valley Lions Club will be selling ice cream, Broad Street Barbeque will feature pulled pork sandwiches, K&D Concessions will be on hand with funnel cakes and shaved ice, Friends of the Tri-Valley Community Pool are making tacos-in-a-bag, and Wendy Updegrave will be selling hamburgers, hot dogs, and drinks. Additional food and merchandise vendors are still being added to the event.

Proceeds from the carnival benefit the rescues in attendance. Lettich states “The KFFA kids want to make people aware of how many animals need help and this is a great way to bring attention to their cause. People who attend the carnival also benefit because they are exposed to local resources they may not have known about otherwise.”

The event features entertainment by DJ Dan Poletti. There will also be a Chinese Auction on the day of the event and auction items are still needed. Anyone interested in donating to the auction can contact Tisha Tolar at 570-590-8468. For more information or to be a carnival sponsor, contact Christine Lettich at (570)449-7149.

It will also feature commercial space that will be utilized for senior services including adult day care and therapy services. It is being funded through tax credits and through the PennHOMES program administered by the Pennsylvania Housing Financing Agency (PHFA). The tax credits awarded through the highly competitive process total $1,018,618 and a grant through PennHOMES of $ 1,200,000.
