Woman Rescued from Roof After Frackville Fire on Friday Afternoon

A woman was rescued during a fire in Frackville Friday afternoon.

Around 2:30pm, Friday, fire crews were called to 9 South Railroad Street, Frackville, for a working structure fire.

Police and fire crews were first to arrive and found a woman waiting for help on a front porch roof.  Officers were able to use a ladder to get the woman to safety.  She was not injured.

The fire was under control and out within a half an hour.

Officials at the scene told Skook News that the fire appeared to have originated in a first floor front room of the home.  

Even with high winds, firefighters kept the majority of the fire damage to 9 South Railroad Street which was listed as moderate, 7 South Railrood Street sustained minor damage.

Two adults that live in 9 South Railroad Street are being helped by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.  A State Police Fire Marshall will be called in to investigate.

According to PPL, as of 10:30am, 1,606 customers are without powers.

Averi Jordan Becomes North Schuylkill's Girls All Time Leading Scorer

On Saturday, Averi Jordan, the Senior forward for the North Schuylkill Lady Spartans, became the district's all time leading scorer.


Going into Saturday afternoon's game at Martz Hall against the Saint Basil Academy, Jordan had scored 1,728 points in her high school career. 

The Senior was able to score 15 points during the game to surpass the school's record held by Michele Simons by 1.  Her current total stands at 1,743 points.

North Schuylkill moves onto the PIAA State Playoffs where she will continue to add to her record.

Vehicle Reported Stolen Overnight in Mahanoy City

The Mahanoy City Police are investigating a report of a stolen vehicle in the borough overnight.

Police say the incident occurred sometime between 2:00am and 9:00am on Saturday morning.

The victim told police that a Red 2004 Honda Pilot, bearing PA Registration KHW0841 was taken from the 100 block of East Pine Street. 

Anyone with information is urged to call the Mahanoy City Police Department at (570) 773-2310. If the vehicle is spotted, call 911.

Man Injured in Overnight Crash on Interstate 81

A Shenandoah man suffered minor injuries in a crash on Interstate 81 last night.

According to the Pennysylvania State Police at Frackville, the crash occurred around 2:30am in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Delano Township near Milemarker 134.9

Police say Randy Zamudio-Estrada, 27, of Shenandoah was traveling northbound in a Chevrolet Avalanche on Interstate 81, when for unknown reasons, traveled off the left side of the highway, struck and road sign, and went down an embankment.

The vehicle then traveled back across both northbound lanes and came to a rest on the right berm of the highway.

Zamuido-Estrada was reported to not be wearing a seatbelt and suffered facial injuries from striking the windshield.

Assisting at the scene were the Delano Township Fire Company and Ryan Township Ambulance.

Coroner Called to Crash near Tower City

A Schuylkill County official has been requested to the scene of a crash near Tower City Sunday morning.

The crash is reported to have occurred Sunday morning on Dietrich Avenue, near Muir and Tower City where one person has died.

Tower City Man Dies in One Vehicle Crash Sunday Morning

A Tower City man died Sunday morning in a one vehicle crash.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, Joshua Hoppes, 29, of Tower City died in the crash on Dietrich Avenue, near Muir, Porter Township, when his vehicle went off the road on a curve, struck a large rock, and rolled several times.

Hoppes was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle during the crash.

A Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner pronounced Hoppes dead at the scene.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing.

Schuylkill County Obituaries for 03/04/2018

Walter "Vladamir" Mistishen, age 90, of Diener's Hill, PA passed away with his loving wife Mary by his side on Saturday, March 3rd, 2018 at The Gardens at York Terrace in Pottsville, where he resided for the past 2 years.

Born in Eagle Hill, PA on March 14, 1927, he was the son of the late Andrew and Theodosia “Sadie” (Danschock) Mistishen.

Walter was a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Saint Clair, the former Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Saint Clair and the Saint Clair American Legion, Post 719.

Walter was a graduate of Blythe Township High School, Class of 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy in WW II. After discharge, he began working at Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, CT. After a few years, he returned back home to Schuylkill County, hauling coal with Reading Anthracite, as well as welding for Kropp Steel, where he helped to prepare the steel structure of the DHH Lengel Martz Hall. He worked in maintenance at Zapata Industries in Frackville for 21 years until retiring in 1989. He was quite a creative genius and always ready to take on a new project.

He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters, taking them on walking excursions to local playgrounds, working on crossword puzzles, watching softball games in Forrest Hills, and cheering them on at their piano recitals. He was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan.

He was born into a very musical family and enjoyed playing his accordion at family parties and was savvy enough to collaborate on writing and recording polkas for “The Shoreliners,” in which his late brother Harry was a member. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a 2 sisters: Mary Shimkus and Theresa Seasock and 4 brothers: John, Michael, Harold, and Nicholas Mistishen.

Walter is survived by his wife, Mary A. (Sabadish) Mistishen, Diener’s Hill. Walter and Mary celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary on June 14, 2017; 2 daughters: Mary Jane Balas and her husband Joseph, McAdoo and Nancy Ann Hardock and her husband Dennis, Pottsville; 2 granddaughters: Jennifer Kohn and her husband Jason, South Amboy, NJ; and Christina DiCello, and her husband Robert, Harrisburg; sister Martha Fabian, Orwigsburg; and nieces and nephews.

Requiem Devine Liturgy will be held at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Saint Clair at 10AM on Friday, March 9th, with Msgr. Myron Grabowsky and Father Paul Makar officiating.

Relatives and Friends are invited to a viewing Thursday evening from 5-8PM with Parastas at 6PM and Friday morning from 8:30-9:30AM with Panachida at 9:30AM at Robert A. Evans Jr. Funeral Home, 208 Pike St., Port Carbon.

Interment with Military Honors will be held at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Saint Clair.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church Memorial Fund, North Morris St., Saint Clair, PA 17970.

Home Destroyed by Fire in Ashland Early Monday Morning

Emergency personnel were called out to an early morning house fire in Ashland.

Around 1:15am, Monday, fire crews were called to the 300 Block of Walnut Street, Ashland for a working structure fire.

Crews arrived to find the front of the home fully engulfed in flames and upgraded the fire to a 2nd Alarm calling in additional units.

By 2:00am, the fire was declared under control.

Nobody was reported to be home at the time.

Ashland Fire Chief Phillip Groody reported that the fire appeared to have started in the front first floor room.  A State Police Fire Marshal has been called to determine an exact cause.

Neighbors reported that a person driving by was the original person to call in the fire and began blowing their vehicle's horn in order to wake all the neighbors in the area.































One Person Injured in Route 901 Crash on Sunday

One person suffered minor injuries in a crash in Cass Township on Sunday.


According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, the crash occurred on Route 901 in Cass Township, near the intersection with Old Phoenix Road, around 5:30pm.

Police say a vehicle driven by Edward Palamar, 66, of Pottsville was stopped due to traffic that was stopped ahead.

Another vehicle driven by Meralea Cook, 34, of Bloomsburg, stopped behind Palamar.

Finally a third vehicle, travelling behind Palamar and Meralea, driven by Katherine Slane, 61, of Pottsville failed to stop crashing into the back of Meralea and pushing her vehicle into Palamar's.

Slane was reported to have suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Snow Covered Road Ways to Blame for Crashes on Interstate 81 on Friday


No Injuries Reported in Interstate 81 Crash in Mahanoy Township

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, the crash occurred around 9:30am on February 2nd, 2018, in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Mahanoy Township.

Police say the one vehicle accident crash occurred when Harjinder Heer, 51, of Laval, Quebec was traveling southbound and lost control of his tractor trailer on the snow covered roadway.

The truck jackknifed and struck a guard rail on the off ramp at the Mahanoy City exit. 

Heer was not injured in the crash.

Jackknifed Tractor Trailer Blocks Interstate 81 Traffic

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, the crash occurred around noon on February 2nd, 2018 in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Mahanoy Township.

Police say the one vehicle accident crash occurred when Sanlake Chomchat, 45, of Lakewood, California was traveling northbound and lost control of his tractor trailer on the snow covered roadway.

The tractor trailer jackknifed and struck a guard rail blocking both northbound lanes of Interstate 81 for approximately 50 minutes.

Chomchat was not injured in the crash.

No Injuries Reported in Interstate 81 Crash in Delano Township

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, the crash occurred in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 near Mile Marker 136 in Delano Township.

Police say the driver, Rita Brooks, 60, lost control on the snow covered roadway, slid off the berm and struck a guard rail.  The vehicle sustained heavy front end damage.

Brooks and two other passengers in the vehicle were not injured in the crash.

WEDNESDAY EVENING...

*WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 6
inches at lower elevations with localized amounts up to 10
inches possible on the ridges.

* WHERE...Dauphin, Schuylkill, Lebanon, York and Lancaster
Counties.

* WHEN...From late Tuesday night through Wednesday evening.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Plan on difficult travel conditions,
including during the evening commute on Wednesday. Significant
reductions in visibility are possible.
