Schuylkill County to Standardize Fire District Numbering

$

Schuylkill County will be standardizing their Fire District numbering system.

Many of us know our local fire district numbers based off the Schuylkill County Fire pages whenever they are dispatched.  What many may not know is those numbers are not consistent across the county.

Roughly 75% of the county abides by a consistent district numbering but the remaining 25%, which are mainly the numbering within each's district, such as the engines, ambulances, tankers, etc. are not.

A vote was approved the January County Fire Chief's Association to make the change.

Frank Zangari, President of the Schuylkill County Fire Chief's Association, told Skook News after the meeting last month that the change is all about consistency.  "The numbering system is all about keeping consistency across the board making it easier for dispatching".

The official system operate with dispatch numbers that will be grouped:

0-9 Fire Chiefs
10-19 Engines
20-29 Aerials
30-39 Tankers

Scot Krater, the Schuylkill County Communications Director, wrote in a letter to all Schuylkill County Fire Departments that the transition to the new system will be completed by July 1, 2018.

PPL Workers from Schuylkill County Aid in Restoring Power in Puerto Rico

For three Schuylkill County men, it is a job like no other on an island 1,600 miles from home.

For the past several weeks, linemen Paul Hertz of Minersville and Nick Zukowsky of Tamaqua as well as transportation mechanic Larry Kuhns of West Penn Township have been working with fellow PPL Electric Utilities workers to restore power in Puerto Rico, ravaged by Hurricane Maria in late September.

PPL crews are working in the Caguas region of Puerto Rico, south of San Juan in the Central Mountain Region of the island.

They’re restoring power to residents who have not had electricity since the hurricane. One day, they were able to restore electricity to a church’s day care center. On another day, a nursing home got its power back. Working from sunrise to sunset every day, PPL crews say their work is sincerely appreciated by local residents.

“It’s been very rewarding working here,” said Hertz “The people of Puerto Rico have demonstrated incredible kindness. At least two to three times a week, people stop, talk to us and offer us food. I will never underestimate the resilience and power of these people and the strength of their culture.”

Most of the current PPL contingent of nearly 40 workers and support personnel arrived in Puerto Rico on Jan. 25 and is about to be replaced by a new group of PPL workers. PPL was one of 18 investor-owned utilities in the mainland U.S. who recently traveled to Puerto Rico in a restoration effort coordinated through the Edison Electric Institute, a trade group. Unlike mutual assistance situations here in the continental U.S., crews could not drive their equipment to where it was needed. PPL’s bucket trucks and other vehicles went to Puerto Rico on barges that departed from Norfolk, VA and Lake Charles, LA.

PPL workers in Puerto Rico assisted the Salvation Army on Valentine’s Day, helping to distribute supplies to local residents. PPL employees here in Pennsylvania donated more than $10,000 for the Salvation Army’s work in Caguas.

The suspects were dressed in black hood sweatshirts, dark pants, gloves, black hats, backpacks, with bandanas covering their faces.  They then left the school by prying open a door with a pry bar they had in one of their backpacks.  They then fled in an unknown direction.

The Pennsylvania State Police K9 unit was requested to sweep the school.  It's unknown if anything was stolen.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the 2 suspects that are pictured is asked to contact the Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven at (570) 754-4600.
