Drug Warrant Leads to Finding Over $73,000 Worth of Drugs

A drug warrant executed Friday led to the finding of over $73,000 worth of drugs including methamphetamine.

On February 9, 2018, members of the Schuylkill County District Attorney’s Office, Drug Task Force, and Pennsylvania State Police, executed search and seizure warrants on a residence located in Cressona and a related vehicle. 

Items considered contraband were seized from the both the vehicle and residence including,
1 3/4 pounds of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $73,400.00, approximately fifteen grams (15 g) of marijuana with an estimated street value of $300.00,  cocaine, mushrooms,  and $1,852.00 of United States Currency.

As a result of the searches, Stephen Robert Dronick, 44, of Cressona, was charged with Possession With the Intent to Deliver (Methamphetamine), Possession With the Intent to Deliver (Marijuana), Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine), Possession of a Controlled Substance (Marijuana), Possession of a Controlled Substance (Cocaine), Possession of a Controlled Substance (Psylocybic mushrooms), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Dronick was arraigned by on-call Magisterial District Judge Anthony J. Kilker, Shenandoah, and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $50,000.00 bail.

Brenda Louise Schaeffer, age 69, of Valley View, passed away Friday, February 9, 2018 at Premier at Susquehanna Nursing Center, Millersburg.

She was born on Monday, November 8, 1948, in Ashland, a daughter of Royle F Miller and the late Gloria L Huntzinger Miller.

She was a 1966 graduate of Tri-Valley High School.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley View.

Brenda provided thirty years of in home child care for area children. She loved camping and spending time with her family.

Preceding her in death in addition to her parents were a sister Tonya Miller.

She is survived by her husband Kenneth W Schaeffer, to whom she was married for 51 years.

She is also survived by a son, Troy R Schaeffer and his wife Vickie of Pillow; a daughter, Tammie G Nelson of Pottstown; two granddaughters, Kerilyn Kramer of Valley View and Samantha Nelson of Pottstown; a grandson, Shane Nelson of Pottstown; two brothers, Thomas Miller of Valley View and Kenneth Miller of Halifax; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley View, on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at 11:00 am, with Rev. Brian Beissel officiating.

There will be no visitation prior to the service.

Robin T. Spicher, 62, of Hegins, passed away Thursday at the Hershey Medical Center.

Born in Ashland, November 24, 1955, a son of Bernice Miller Griffiths, Mount Carmel and the late Bobby Spicher.

Robin was a 1973 graduate of Tri Valley High School. He was a retired highway foreman from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

He was an active member of the Valley View Church of God, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, served on stewardship and property committees, church council and a elder. He was a member of the Hegins Fire Company.

Robin was a former board member of the Valley View Park Association; a former Little League and Teener baseball coach for Tri-Valley and a former Valley View Cub scout leader.

Robin's life revolved around his family, his wife, sons and grandchildren meant the world to him. He enjoyed hunting and spending time on his farm.

Surviving in addition to his mother; are his wife of 42 years, Charlotte Updegrave Spicher; three sons, Terry Spicher, Hegins; Matthew Spicher and his wife Charlene, Hegins and Mackenzie Spicher and his wife Daniele, Ashland; his four grandchildren he adored, Riley and Logan Harman; Addyson and Maggie Spicher; two sisters, Tammy Zerbe and her husband Craig, Valley View and Tina Langel, Newport. Half brother, Scott Griffiths, Wrightsville. Aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be Monday, February 12th at 11 am from the Valley View Church of God, Valley View with Pastor Gerald Frey. Viewing will be from 9-11 am at the church. Bridges to Close Monday for Upcoming Rehabilitation Projects

Rehabilitation projects will close two bridges starting Monday in Schuylkill County.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Engineering District 5 announced Friday work will began on Monday, February 12 to rehabilitate the Port Carbon St Clair Highway Bridge over Mill Creek in East Norwegian Township and Mount Laffee Road Bridge over West Branch Schuylkill River in Norwegian Township.

Beginning Monday, Port Carbon St Clair Highway will be closed and detoured between Mill Street and Industrial Park Road. The detour will utilize Russell Street, PA 61, and US 209. The bidge is estimated to be completed in June.

Also on Monday, Mount Laffee Road will be closed and detoured between Valley Road and New Street. The detour will utilize Valley Road, PA 901, US 209, and PA 61. The bridge is estimated to be completed in July.

Work on the bridges includes replacing the deck on the Port Carbon St Clair Highway Bridge and replacing the deck and beams on the Mount Laffee Road Bridge.

The Port Carbon St Clair Highway Bridge is a single-span adjacent box beam bridge originally constructed in 1964. It is 77 feet long and 52 feet wide.

This section of Port Carbon St Clair Highway has an average daily traffic volume of 8,505 vehicles.

The Mount Laffee Road Bridge is a single-span adjacent box beam bridge originally constructed in 1962. It is 49 feet long and 43 feet wide. This section of Mount Laffee Road has an average daily traffic volume of 3,532 vehicles.

Rylind Construction Company, Inc. of Lewisberry, PA, is the general contractor on the $899,695 project.

Mahanoy City Police Take Two Into Custody During Warrant Sweep

The Mahanoy City Police took two more into custody on Friday with active warrants.


On Friday, February 9th, 2018, Mahanoy City Police headed by Patrolman Thomas Rentschler, conducted a search for fugitives hiding within the borough limits.

Police say Michael Kane, 49 was located and taken into custody in the 600 Block of East Centre Street on a Schuylkill County Bench Warrant.

Cynthia Viquez, 30 was located and taken into custody in the Unit Block of South A Street on a Schuylkill County Bench Warrant.

Both individuals were transported and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison.

Dense Fog Advisory Issued for Sunday Morning

The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for Early Sunday morning.

 The National Weather Service in State College has issued a Dense Fog Advisory, which is in effect until 10 AM EST Sunday.

* VISIBILITY...Areas of dense fog with visibilities near zero will continue through mid morning.

* IMPACTS...Reduced visibility will hamper travel.

Nancy Jo Doraski, 78, Ashland, passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning at her home.

Born in Muncy, she was a daughter of the late Roy “Sparky” and Maude Hall Adams. She worked for Clorox Company and in the housekeeping department at Geisinger, Danville before her retirement.

Nancy was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Ashland. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 541, Catawissa and also served as a bartender for many years.

She enjoyed crocheting and was very generous with the items that she made for many people. She was a great person, who was loved by all.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Tom Doraski.

Nancy is survived by her loving companion, James J. Cuff, Ashland; her son Mike Van Cleave, Roseburg, OR; her brother Edward E. Adams, Muncy; her sister Alice Luce, Frewsburg, NY; her two grandsons: Steven and Fred Van Cleave; several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Ashland with pastor, Rev. Paul Rothermel, as the celebrant. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery in Elysburg. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from Noon until the time of mass.

Philip J. Dangelo, 69, Harrisburg, former Girardville resident passed away peacefully Friday at Pinnacle Health Hospital, Harrisburg.

Born in Ashland, he was a son of the late Philip and Josephine Corigliano Dangelo. He was of the Catholic faith.

He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Jo Myer.

Philip is survived by several cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. from the Thomas M. Sullivan Funeral Home Girardville with Rev. Paul Rothermel officiating. Sarah L. Cooper, 89, of Berwick, PA, formerly of Ashland, passed away Friday, February 9, 2018 at Signature Healthare,Bloomsburg, PA.

Born in Ashland, PA March 2, 1928 the daughter of the late Charles and Emma (Derr) Trathen. She graduated from Ashland High School. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Evansville and was the church organist for many years. Preceding her in death was her husband, James Cooper in 1999. Also preceding her in death were four sisters and two brothers: Anna, Emma, Alma, Clara, Charles, and Clarence. 

She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Cooper, Nescopeck, PA. Also surviving are two grandchldren, and two great-grandchildren. Nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 12 noon Monday, February 12, 2018 in Christ Church Cemetery, Fountain Springs, PA . Rev. Robert Rice officiating.

Alexander F. “Alex” Chesonis, 68, of Shenandoah, passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Shenandoah, December 4, 1949, he was a son of the late Alexander E. and Florence (Novatka) Chesonis.

Alex was a 1967 graduate of the former J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah.

He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Shenandoah, formerly St. George Church. Alex was an avid hunter and fisherman but, above all, his family was of most importance to him.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his daughter, Angela Chesonis; sister, Carol Ann Pryzbylik Jones.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, the former Margaret L. “Marge” Vislusky; a daughter, Beverly Labosky and her husband, Michael, Shenandoah Heights; a son, Dave Chesonis and his fiancee, Susan Smith, Shenandoah; four grandchildren, Melissa Chesonis, and Nathan, Sydney and Morgan Labosky; three great-grandchildren, Brayden, Lilliana and Gabriella; brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Casimir Church, the sacred worship site of Divine Mercy Parish, 229 N. Jardin St., Shenandoah. Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Dawn Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights.

Andrew T. Popalis, 93, of Shenandoah Heights, PA, passed away Friday, February 9th, suddenly, at his residence.

Andrew was born in Shenandoah, PA on March 7, 1924, a son of the late Anna (Lokitus) and Joseph G. Popalis.

Andrew left his mark of craftsmanship throughout the region as an expert carpenter, tile and carpet mechanic. His work still remains in many homes, businesses and churches to this day.

His love of design is present in his home where he lived for 61 years. He also worked at Locust Mountain and Coaldale State Hospital.

Andrew was lovingly called “Yendrok” and Gramp by his wife and family. The happiness and protection of his family always came first. He shared with his family and community a strong faith and commitment to doing the right thing. His heart and home were not only given to his family and others but he and Rose also fostered over 40 children, and adopting 5.

A proud Veteran of WWII, serving in the army Air Corp. in the China Burma India Theatre as a Tech Sergeant. He repaired combat damaged aircraft and was in charge of a large group of men.

Andrew was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, a member of the Catholic War Veterans, the D’Amato Post, and last served as Chaplain. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church and choir. He was also a member of and past president of the Shenandoah High School Band Parents, never missing a game, chaperoning and helping in any way.

Andrew loved his Lithuanian Heritage. He also embraced the Italian traditions he adopted from his wife and family.

He cherished God, family, work, baseball and his pipe.

He was husband of the late Rose M. (Bell) who passed away Sept 25th, 2016. They celebrated 70 years of marriage September 7th, 2016.

Andrew is survived by four daughters, Rosanne, wife of Walter Hall, Shenandoah Heights; Annette, wife of Terry Deitz, Johnstown; Mary Elizabeth Stefanowicz, Kulpmont; Theresa, Shenandoah Heights; five sons, Andrew M., husband of Patricia; Joseph, husband of Joanie, Bethesda, MD; John Zucotti, husband of Jewel, Dillsburg; Michael, Downingtown; and Eric, NY.

He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers Albert and Joseph.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Devine Mercy Catholic Church, 218 West Cherry Street, Shenandoah, at 11 a.m. on Thursday February 15th, 2018.

Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. Interment will be in Our Lady of Mount Carmel cemetery.

Family prefers donations be made to the D’Amato Post.

William J Arner, husband, father, grandfather and brother of 429 N Railroad St Tamaqua passed away Saturday February 10, 2018 at his home peacefully with his family at the age of 78.

He is survived by his wife Faith (Lucas) Arner, and children Lisa Dolan, Becky Major, Amy Walburn, Justin Major, and Heather Major, also sister Theresa Arner and five grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews.

William served in the U.S. Army in the Korean war. While he was retired from being a heavy equipment operator he was an active member of the Hometown Fire Co. and Fire Police for many years.

Born on Tuesday, February 21, 1939 in Coaldale, Pennsylvania the son of late James and Helen Arner. He was predeceased by his sisters Helen, Sara, and Patricia and brothers James, Bernie, Russell, ,Charles, John, Francis, Joseph, Larry, and Robert.

Marie “Shorty” Baum, 92, of Pitman, passed away Friday, February 9th, 2018 as Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. 

Marie was born in Dornsife, on April 14th, 1925, a daughter of the late Mazie and Charles Campbell. She graduated from Primary school on April 20th, 1939. She worked at Snyder’s Greenhouse in Leck Kill, the General Store in Leck Kill, Snyder’s Restaurant in Pitman and the Carriage House in Klingerstown. 

She was a member of Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church, Leck Kill. She enjoyed playing cards, working in her garden and lawn and helping in the kitchen at Jack’s Spot. She was the window of the late Lester L. Baum who passed away January 29th, 1990. She was preceded in death by a daughter Ruby Williard who passed on July 7th 2007, and a son-in-law Charles Williard who passed on September 28th, 2016. 

Marie is survived by a daughter, Anita Shissler and companion Jack Bensinger, Sr., of Pitman; grandchildren Michelle Williard of Huntingdon, PA and Leroy Shissler, his wife Maura, and 2 great children, Amanda and Kaitlyn of Chelmsford, MA. 

Viewing will be held on Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 from 6-8 PM at the Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home 1133 Ridge Rd, Klingerstown and on Thursday, February 15th, 2018 from 10-11 AM at Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church, 5189 Schwaben Creek Rd, Leck Kill, where the funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM.

Man Injured in Roof Collapse

A man was injured when a roof collapsed on Sunday.

Around 12:00pm Sunday, emergency personnel were called 77 Silver Creek Road, in Blythe Township near New Philadephia for a roof collapse with entrapment.

According to authorities, a man was working on the home, which was being demolished when the roof collapsed on top of him.  The man was reported to have been unconscious when the pulled the man from the debris.

The identify of the victim was not released but the man was reported to have been taken to an area hospital for his injuries.

Man Wanted in Schuylkill County Taken into Custody in West Hazleton

A man wanted in Schuylkill County was taken into custody during a traffic stop in West Hazleton Sunday evening.

According to West Hazleton Police, on Sunday, February 11, 2018, around 11:15 pm, West Hazleton Police Officer on patrol observed a vehicle being operated with a lighting equipment violation. During the course of a vehicle traffic stop, the driver, and a passenger, were found to be wanted persons.

Justin Paul Haines, 30, AKA “Justin Azar”, of Shenandoah, was wanted by Schuylkill County Adult Probation for violating probation conditions following a heroin sales conviction. Haines faces charges for False Identification to Law Enforcement, and drug related charges as a result of the traffic stop. Haines was taken into custody and transported to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility.

The vehicle operator, Joseph Michael Elliss, 35, of Hazleton, was wanted by the Luzerne County Sheriffs Department for failure to appear. Elliss also faces drug related charges, and driving with a suspended/revoked license as a result of the traffic stop. Ellis was taken into custody and transported to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility.



Thieves Steal Truck, Trailer, and ATVs Worth Over $70,000 in Lebanon County

Police are looking for three thieves who a truck, trailers, and ATV's worth over $70,000 over the weekend in Lebanon County.


According to the Pennsylvania State Police, late Saturday or early Sunday morning thieves stole a white 2005 Ford F250 on Tulpehocken Road, in Jackson Township, Lebanon County. 

After stealing the truck, the thieves proceeded to Off Road Motorsports, located along 422 also in Jackson Township.  Around 1:55am, the thieves broke into the business and loaded 3 side by side off road utility vehicles into a white color 35 foot enclosed trailer that belonged to the business.  The thieves attached the trailer to the stolen truck and fled the scene.

Three suspects were observed on the surveillance footage of the business.  All three were wearing dark clothing and masks.

The license plate of the F250 is YSB4505 and the trailer's is XJP2811.

The side by sides were identified as an orange colored 2014 Polaris RZR two seater, bearing VIN# 4XAST1EA9EF361133, a black and red colored 2017 Polaris RZR four seater, bearing VIN# 3NSVCE873HH009495, and a yellow colored 2013 Can-Am Commander two seater, bearing VIN# 3BJKKCP18DJ000659. The estimated value of the stolen side by sides and trailer is $55,000. The estimated value of the stolen F250 is $14,000.

The owner of Off Road Motorsports is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the return of the vehicles stolen from his business, and the arrest and prosecution of those involved.

Joseph M. Timko, age 71, of Mahanoy City and formerly of Shenandoah, died Sunday morning at his home. Born March 19, 1946 in Upper Shaft he was the son of the late George and Tessie (Gulick) Timko.

He was a 1963 graduate of Shenandoah Catholic High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force and served on Monkey Mountain in Vietnam. He was of the Roman Catholic Faith and a member of the former St. Stephen's Church in Shenandoah. He was a member of Mahanoy City American Legion Post 74, Ashland VFW Post 7654, BPOE 695 in Mahanoy City and was a life member of the William Penn Fire Company. He was an avid fan of the New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants.

Joe was a well known accordion player with the former band "The Legends" of St. Clair in the 1970's and 80's.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were a son Joseph in 1992 and a brother George in 2012.

Survivors include two sons Michael and his wife Holly of Mahanoy City, Christopher of Lost Creek, sister in law Shirlee Timko of Hazle Township, a niece Debbie Yanuzzi of Hazle Township and 3 grandchildren Colin, Nolan and Christopher Timko.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a religious service and military honors on Friday morning at 10 AM in St. Michael's Cemetery in Shenandoah Heights.

Msgr. Ronald Bocian will officiate.

Friends may call at the David D. Jarrett Funeral Home in Mahanoy City on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM.

Contributions in Joe's name to the Mahanoy City American Legion Post 74 or the Mahanoy City American Legion Ladies Auxiliary would be appreciated by the family and will be accepted at the visitation.

Walter E. Shubeck, 87, of Coaldale passed Sunday February 11, 2018 at St. Luke's Miners Campus, Coaldale.

Born in Coaldale, July 10, 1930, he was a son of the late Stephen and Myrtle (Gewehr) Shubeck.

A 1948 graduate of Coaldale High School, he retired as a Printer working at both The Reading Eagle and The Tamaqua Courier. He was a member of the Coaldale American Legion. Walter enjoyed working on cars, cooking and visiting Chinese auctions.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Joyce Gabos.

Surviving are his companion, Charlotte Scheidly, Tamaqua, two brothers, Stephen Shubeck and his wife Dorothy, Macungie, PA, John Shubeck, Shoemakersville, PA, two Nephews Thomas Gabos and Stephen Shubeck, and one Niece Valerie Shubeck.



Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 655 E Broad St., Tamaqua, PA 18252.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday February 15, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with the Rev. Dan Meader officiating. Friends may call from 9:30AM to 11:00AM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Luke's Rehabilitation & Nursing 360 West Ruddle St., Coaldale, PA 18218.

Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Tamaqua, Pennsylvania.

Elizabeth Didjunas, 96, a lifelong resident of Mill Creek, passed away Thursday at Schuylkill Center, Pottsville.

Born in Mill Creek, Oct. 23, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Julia McDonald Hoke and widow of Edward D. Didjunas, who passed March 23, 1972.

A graduate of Saint Clair High School, Class of 1938, she was a member of St. Clare of Assisi R.C. Church, Saint Clair, and the former St. Casimir R.C. Church, Saint Clair.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Catherine Hoke, Monica McCaffrey, Dorothy Snyder, Sara Brennan and Mildred Stoudt.

Surviving are her daughter, Kathleen Didjunas, with whom she resided; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday from St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 250 E. Hancock St., Saint Clair, with Monsignor William F. Glosser officiating. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Clare of Assisi Memorial Fund, 250 E. Hancock St., Saint Clair, PA 17970. Burial will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery, Port Carbon. Bruce T. Hart Funeral Home, Saint Clair, is in charge of arrangements.

Robyn Lyn Barrett, 39, of Buck Run, beloved daughter of Holly and John, best friend and cherished sister of Heather and dog mom to her puppy Dasher, passed away at home on February 9, 2018.

Robyn was a graduate of Minersville Area High School, Dickenson College and Towson University. She taught environmental science and biology at the high school level. The environment was her passion.

She lover her family and friends and always looked forward to spending time with them.

Robyn loved baseball, especially her Pittsburgh Pirates, and spending time at the beach watching for dolphins.

She enjoyed playing card games and board games, with family and friends. She really enjoyed playing mini-golf, where she always wanted to keep score. She frequently won.

Her smile and laughter will be greatly missed by all she touched.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on April 7, 2018 at 2pm at the Trinity Lutheran Chapel, Buck Run.

Black Ice to Blame for Rollover Crash Monday Evening

Slippery roads are to blame for a rollover crash Monday evening.


Just before 7:00pm, emergency personnel were called the Vulcan Hill (Route 54) Mahanoy Township, near Mahanoy City for a one vehicle rollover crash with entrapment.

Before emergency personnel arrived, the driver was able to escape the vehicle.

According to Mahanoy Township Police, while travelling on Route 54, the truck hit a patch of black ice, lost control, and rolled onto it's side.

The driver refused treatment at the scene.

Mahanoy Township Police are still investigating the crash.
