Below is a video we have been working on since the summer.

The Schuylkill Mall properties were purchased earlier in 2017 by Northpoint Development and it was later announced that the mall would be torn down to create two warehouses.

In the summertime, we took the drone video below and the photos included were submitted by our readers.

Girardville Man Arrested on Outstanding Warrant, Aggravated Assault, and Resisting Arrest Charges

A Girardville man is facing additional charges after being wanted for an outstanding warrant.


According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, Christopher Weston, 35, of Girardville is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, escape, driving with a suspended or revoked license, driving while under the influence of a controlled substance, and other charges after an incident in the borough on November 28th, 2017.

Police say while they were on patrol in the 100 Block of West Ogden Street in the borough, they encountered Weston in the driver seat of a vehicle, blocking traffic.

Police learned Weston was already had an outstanding warrant on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle from Magisterial District Judge Christina Hale's office.

While Police attempted to take Weston into custody, he fled on foot, and led police in a pursuit.

Weston was captured on Richard Street and despite the use of a taser gun and physical force, he continued to resist being taken into custody.

After being taken into custody, Weston was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer, Tamaqua and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison on $25,000 straight cash bail.

On 12/6/2017, unsecured bail was set on the charges of the original warrant.

Vincent A Love, age 90, of Molleystown, passed away Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Lehigh Valley Hospital - E Norwegian, Pottsville.

He was born on Tuesday, October 11, 1927, in Tremont Twp, a son of the late William Love and the late Ellen Zimmerman Love.

He was a graduate of the former Tremont High School.

Vince was an ore miner for Bethlem Steel, Cornwall and then was a truck driver for Mallard Quarry, Palmyra until his retirement.

Vince enjoyed working in his woodshop, boating, model trains, camping, listening to polkas, and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lorraine J Rehrer Love; a son, Richard A Love; three brothers Russell Love, William Love, and Norman Love; and by two sisters, Joan Wisnosky and Ann Eroh.

He is survived by a son, Dale E Love of Molleystown; a daughter, Carol A Bensinger of Hegins; five grandsons; five great grandchildren; a sister Jackie Koppenhaver of Pine Grove; and by several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Pine Grove, with Rev. Duane Bardo officiating.

Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, is in charge of arrangements.

Denise A Leitzel, age 59, of Leesburg, FL, passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at her residence.

She was born on July 8, 1958, a daughter of the late Harold Ney and the late Emma Jane Starr Ney.

Dee grew up in Rough and Ready, PA.

She was a graduate of Tri-Valley High School.

She leaves behind her husband, Allen Leitzel; three daughters, Brandi, Brittany, and Kerri, who are her princesses; four grandchildren, Cameron, Lenix, Sariah, and Lorelei, twelve siblings, Yvonne, Stephen, William, Rebecca, Lucinda, Vincent, Sally, Richard, Charles, Kenneth, Crystal, and Jolynn; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She will be remembered as an amazing and loving wife, mother, nana, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend.

Dee will be remembered for her amazing smile, infectious laugh, and the love she shared for everyone who knew her.

Memorial services will be held at Salem Church of Rough and Ready, Rough and Ready, PA, on Saturday December 16, 2017 at 11A.M. with Rev. Mark Rothermel officiating. There will not be a visitation prior to the service.

James “Jamie” R. Short of Gilberton, passed away Thursday, December 7, 2017 surrounded by his family and friends.
Janie was born in Coaldale, September 12, 1951; he was the son of the late Charles and Anna Short. A kind, loving, big hearted man departed this world much too early. He was a true and trusted friend to so many and will truly be missed. He was a graduate of Mahanoy Area High School and studied at North Schuylkill Vo-Tech and Penn State.

Jamie was a skilled worker as a furnace operator, head smelter and foreman, but he was most proud of his service with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. He was certified in over 18 types of heavy equipment and was known widely as a superb trainer for many PennDOT workers in the proper and safe use of equipment.
Jamie was a life member of Gilberton Continental Hose Company # 3, active member of several adult softball teams and member of Lavelle Hose Co. But his greatest and proudest membership was to the Ashland Masonic Lodge # 294 F. and A.M. He held membership and leadership in the following: member and past high priest of Griscom Royal Arch Chapter No. 219 Ashland; member and current Eminent Commander of Prince of Peace Commandery No. 39, Ashland, member and current Thrice Illustrious Master of Regal Council No. 65 Pottsville; member of Schuylkill Council No. 265 Allied Masonic Degrees, Pottsville.

Jamie is survived by his sister Susan and spouse Stephen Bensinger and nephews Samuel and Sean Bensinger all of New Orleans, LA; his sister Mary and spouse Terry Scott of Evans, GA, and his adopted/extended family Sheila and spouse Robert “Ferbs” Dengler, son Randy and spouse Nicole and their children Lucas and Greyson. He was Uncle Jamie to those two children. They gave him great joy and they will surely miss each other.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, December 11, 2017 from the Nice – Hart Funeral Home Inc., 9 North Lehigh Ave., Frackville, PA, 17931, with the Rev. Robert Finlan officiating. Friend may call 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to The Ashland Masonic Lodge # 294, 2500 Center Street, Ashland, PA, 17921. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Butler Township.

Bridge near Girardville Reopens

A bridge near Girardville officially reopened Friday.

On July 5th, 2017, PennDOT closed Main Street, Girardville from the Route 54 Intersection in Homesville, Butler Township to Julia Street in the borough to replace the deck and perform other repairs on the bridge over Mahanoy Creek on Homesville Road.

Since then, traffic has been detoured around the borough using Route 54.

The bridge was originally scheduled to be completed by September 15th, 2017 but PennDOT had said they were waiting for guiderail to arrive from the manufacturer.  On Thursday, crews were seen installing the new guiderail.

According to PennDOT officials, the bridge officially reopened Friday morning.

Kathryn M. Becker, 89, of Joliett, passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 in the Tremont Health & Rehab Center.

Born on October 10, 1928 in Lincoln, she was a daughter of the late William H. Sr. and Minnie Mae Leffler Becker.
Kathryn was a life time member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Ravine, where she had been active in Children's Sunday School Class, Choir, Altar Guild, Women's Auxiliary, Sunday School and church council. Kathryn loved to send greeting cards and praying for family, friends, and anyone in need. She had been doing that since she graduated High School. Kathryn loved and was well loved by her family and friends.
She was a 1947 graduate of Tremont High School.
Preceding her in death were four sisters, Erma Becker, Amy Hetrick, Dorothy Kreider, and Minerva Lodish; four brothers, John Becker, William Becker, Jr., Theodore Becker, and Thomas Becker.
Surviving are a son, Kerry and wife Mary Becker of Texas; six grandchildren: William and wife Lauren Becker, Robert and wife Catherine Becker, Jean Becker, Michael Becker and wife Jillion, David and wife Robyn Becker, Sarah and husband Gordon Bolton; 19 great grandchildren: Adam, Jacob, Ammon, Timothy, Phineas, Natalie, Ella, Anna, Emma, Alasyn, Joseph, Zachariah, Emerson, Levi, Isabel, Hewwit, Kerrick, Forest, Brandon; a sister Gloria Kroh of Joliett, many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at the H. L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc., Pine Grove, with SALM John Ziegler officiating on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 1:00 P.M. There will be a viewing on Tuesday, Dec. 12, from 11:00 A.M. until time of service at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow in St. Matthew's Lutheran Cemetery, Pine Grove.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer contributions be made to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Pine Grove, c/o Richard Wolfgang 240 Tremont Rd., Pine Grove, PA 17963 in her memory.

Margaret L. (Howells) Bernhard, 77, of Shenandoah Heights, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill E. Norwegian Street.

Born in Turkey Run, Shenandoah, on Sept. 14, 1940, she was a daughter of the late Ben and Anna (Millichap) Howells.

She was class salutatorian and a 1958 graduate of the former J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah.

Prior to her retirement, Margaret was employed for 35 years at Ateeco Inc., Mrs. T’s Pierogies, Shenandoah, where she was the office manager.

On July 11, 1959, in the former First Baptist Church, Shenandoah, she married Ronald Bernhard, who survives.

Margaret was a devout and active member of the former First Baptist Church, Shenandoah. In the church, she was a member of the Ladies’ Missionary and a former Sunday school teacher. She participated in the annual Shenandoah Heritage Days, having portrayed her Welsh ancestry. Currently, she attended the Kulp United Methodist Church, Catawissa.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were two sisters, Edith Sinkiewicz and Harriette Shafer; a nephew, Thomas Shafer.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 58 years, Ronald Bernhard, are a son, Dr. Ronald G. Bernhard and his wife, Lisa, Catawissa; a daughter, Nancy Kantor, Schnecksville; six grandchildren, Casey, Colt, Colby and Cage Bernhard, Kayla Masullo and her husband, Alex, and Thomas Toborowski and his fiancee, Karlena Price; a brother, the Rev. Thomas Howells and his wife, Jean, Springfield, Mass.; a sister, Lois Houser, Ashland; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Religious services for family and close friends will be held at noon Monday at Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah. Pastor Adam Miller of the Kulp United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. Family and close friends are invited to attend a viewing from 10 a.m. until noon Monday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy will be accepted at the funeral home and can be made to the Kulp United Methodist Church, 1395 Old Reading Road, Catawissa, PA 17820.

Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, Shenandoah, is in charge of the arrangements.

Children and Youth and Police Looking for Runaway Teen

Schuylkill County Children and Youth and the Pottsville Police are attempting to locate a runaway teen.

The teen is identified as Blake Deeter, 16, and his last known address was in Ashland.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Pottsville Police at (570) 628-3792 or Schuylkill County Children and Youth at (570) 628-1054.

No Injuries Reported in Roll Over Crash Saturday Afternoon near Ringtown

No injuries were reported in a rollover crash in West Mahanoy Township on Saturday.


According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, around 12:30pm a crash occurred on Route 924 in West Mahanoy Township near Ringtown.

Police say the crash occurred when a vehicle driven by a 17 year old was traveling northbound on Ringtown Boulevard (Route 924) and lost control on a snow covered roadway.  The vehicle traveled off the road, struck a guard rail and rolled over an embankment.  The vehicle came to a rest back on it's wheels.

The 17 year old and a passenger were not injured in the crash.

Assisting at the scene were the Shenandoah Heights Fire Department and Shenandoah EMS.

Ashland Celebrates Old Fashioned Downtown Christmas in the Snow

Despite the snow Saturday afternoon and evening, Ashland residents came out to enjoy the Annual Old Fashioned Downtown Christmas.


The event, which was coordinated by the Ashland Area Historic Preservation Society was held at 5th and Centre Streets in the borough.

The event had free horse and carriage rides, hot chocolate and cookies.

Schuylkill County Police Log for 12/09/17

Snow Covered Road Causes Crash in New Philadelphia

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, Daniel Spillane, 31, of Middleport was traveling on Route 209 in the southern end of New Philadelphia near the intersection of Valley Street and Hickory Lane when he lost control and struck a tree.

Spillane was not injured in the crash the vehicle needed to be towed from the scene.

The Good Intent Fire Department of New Philadelphia assisted at the scene.

Interstate 81 Closed Sunday Morning for a Tractor Trailer Fire

A tractor trailer caught fire on Interstate 81 Sunday morning.

Just after 7:00am Sunday morning, fire crews responded to the southbound lanes lanes of Interstate 81 near milemarker 132 near Mahanoy City for a tractor trailer fire.

As of 9:00am, the southbound lanes of the Interstate are still closed from the Delano Exit to the Mahanoy City exit for for cleanup.

UPDATE: Interstate Reopens After Tractor Trailer Fire

Interstate 81 has reopened after a tractor trailer fire closed both southbound lanes Sunday morning.


According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, the incident occurred around 7:15am when a tractor trailer driven by Fregy Attelus, 32, Allentown was traveling southbound on Interstate 81 near Milemarker 132 in Delano Township.

The fire started in the rear trailer and Attelus pulled over to the shoulder of the highway where the trailer became engulfed in flames.

No injuries were reported and the trailer was able to be towed from the scene.

The cargo inside the trailer was reported to be from Amazon.

Both lanes of Interstate 81 southbound were closed while fire personnel got the fire under control.

The passing lanes/left lane reopened around 9:30am and the right lane were closed for several more hours while the scene was cleared.

Assisting at the scene were the Delano Fire, McAdoo Fire, Hometown FIre, and the Good American Fire (Mahanoy City).

Deborah Wilner, 60, of Mahanoy City, passed away Tuesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Schuylkill East Norwegian Street, after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Mahanoy City, September 17, 1957, Debbie was a graduate of Marian High School, and was of the Catholic faith.

She had worked for McDonalds, Frackville, Wal-Mart, St. Clair, Kmart, Frackville, and Morgan Knitting Mills, Hometown.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Rosie Wilner, father, Stephen Wilner, and her buddy, Mitch the Cat.

She is survived by loving neighbors and co-workers, and her “adopted” niece and nephew, Meredith and Jack Rhoades.

Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday December 19th, at Louis D. Truskowsky Funeral Home, Mahanoy City with Pastor Jack Murray officiating as service at 7pm.
Donations are preferred to Coal Cracker Kids and can be made at the service.

Charles H. Nunemacher, 85, of West Phillips Street, Coaldale, PA died on Friday, December 8, 2017 in Lehighton, PA. 

He was the husband of the late Betty (nee Scheitrum) Nunemacher who died July 29, 2006. 

Born in Tamaqua, PA on January 31, 1932, Charles was a son of the late George and Gertrude (nee Lauchnor) Nunemacher. As a member of the United States Air Force military police from 1951-1955, he served his country and earned a bronze star during the Korean War while stationed in Seoul, South Korea. Retiring from Lehigh Asphalt after 20 years employment, Charles also worked for the Trojan Powder Company for 12 years and Bethlehem Steel for for 15 years. He was a life member of the Nesquehoning VFW Post #8008; a member of the Lehighton American Legion Post #314 for 32 years; a former member of the Lansford Amvets from 1971-2014; and of the Protestant faith. Charles enjoyed sports, bingo and traveling. 

He is survived by sisters, Betty Bablo of Tamaqua, Dorothy Poorman of California, Lois Reed of Alabama, Marian Fritz of Pittsburgh, PA and Joyce Nunemacher of Andreas, PA; brothers, Kenneth Nunemacher of Tamaqua, George, Jr. of Tamaqua, and Edward Nunemacher of Lansford, PA; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. 

Charles was predeceased by brothers, Russell Nunemacher, Raymond Nunemacher, Paul Nunemacher, and Robert Nunemacher and by a sister, Beatrice Boracius. 

A military graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, December 16, 2017 in Sky View Memorial Park, Hometown, PA with The Rev. Kevin Roberts officiating.

The Greater Shenandoah Area Chamber of Commerce is again sponsoring a holiday decoration contest for local residents.

People are asked to keep their lights on nightly for judging. Winners will be selected and notified prior to Christmas Eve, according to Mark Bernardyn, chamber treasurer and co-chairman of the contest committee.

Eileen Marie Sheehan, age 59, of Port Carbon, PA passed away with her loving family by her side on Thursday, December 7th, 2017 at her home.

Born in Pottsville, PA on May 26, 1958, she was the daughter of the late Philomena M. (Tobin) Lipshaw and George J. Lipshaw Sr., who survives her in Port Carbon.

Eileen was a graduate of Nativity B.V.M. High School, Class of 1976. She worked as a crime clerk for the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop N in the Hazleton Barracks and she was a member of the St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Saint Clair.

Eileen is survived by her husband of 34 years, James J. Sheehan, Port Carbon; a son Brandon J. Sheehan and his wife Maureen, Collegeville; a daughter Lauren M. Sheehan, Pottsville; two grandsons: Ryan and Colin Sheehan, Collegeville; three brothers: George Lipshaw Jr. and his wife Janet, David Lipshaw and his wife Tina, and Scott Lipshaw and his wife Kelly, all of Port Carbon; and nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church in Saint Clair at 12 noon on Wednesday, December 13th, with Msgn William Glosser and Deacon Thomas O'Brien officiating.

Relatives and Friends are invited to a viewing on Wednesday morning from 9:30-11:30AM at Robert A. Evans Jr. Funeral Home, 208 Pike St., Port Carbon.

Interment will be held in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Saint Clair. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hillside SPCA, P.O. Box 233, Pottsville, PA 17901. Please send condolences to www.robertaevansjrfh.com
