Filmmakers have announced screening of upcoming Documentary about Centralia.

"CENTRALIA, Pennsylvania’s Lost Town" is a documentary directed by Joe Sapienza II.

The film follows the story of Centralia and its infamous mine fire through the perspectives of former and current residents, the government’s own actions, and local news archives.

Joe Sapienza, a native of Philadelphia and camera assistant and assistant producer with NFL Films, is executive producer and director along with producer Allyson Kircher, an assistant at CESD Talent in New York who oversaw the project.

Over a four-year period, they successfully completed a documentary that will tell Centralia’s fate through the perspective of Centralia’s former and current residents, the government’s own actions, and local news archives. Joe screened a private rough cut of the documentary twice in the fall of 2016 to former cast, crew, and residents of Centralia and Byrnesville.

(03/22/2017) A man led police in separate chases in Schuylkill County Tuesday night.

According to Pottsville Police, on Tuesday night, at approximately 10:15pm, Pottsville Bureau of Police officers were on special patrol in an unmarked police car when they observed a red Chrysler 300 turn from the 400 block of Coal St. onto Mauch Chunk Street almost striking their vehicle.

The vehicle continued east on Mauch Chunk and turned into the Dunkin Donuts parking lot at a high rate of speed, then crossed Route 61 eastbound onto Stein St., where the officers lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later another Pottsville policeman operating a marked patrol car observed a vehicle matching the vehicle's description parked in the middle of the road in the 400 Block of East Market St.

As he approached the vehicle,  the driver, later identified as Josh Hickey, 23, of Pottsville, drove off and turned north onto N. George Street then west onto E. Race Street and north on Route 61.

Despite being followed by a marked patrol car utilizing audible and visual emergency signals to stop, Hickey accelerated in an attempt to elude police. After obtaining positive identification of the suspect vehicle registration, Pottsville police disengaged from the pursuit due to safety concerns for other motorists being caused by Hickey’s reckless driving during the pursuit.

Pottsville Police alerted departments north of the city to advise them of the situation and the description of the suspect's vehicle.

Not long after, around 10:30pm, Frackville and Mahanoy City Police located the vehicle.  Hickey attempted to elude police again in Frackville where he then failed to make a turn near the intersection of Pine and Balliet Streets.

Hickey reportedly attempted to flee on foot but police were right behind and took him into custody.

The subsequent investigation led to Pottsville Police being given permission to search the vehicle by the registered owner, a 38 year old Pottsville man not present at the time of the incident, and seized synthetic marijuana packaged for sale, US currency, a digital scale and several items of drug paraphernalia.

A criminal complaint was prepared by Pottsville Police charging Hickey with Fleeing or Attempting to Elude Police, Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Driving Vehicle at Safe Speed, Stop Signs, Careless Driving, Reckless Driving and Drivers required to be licensed. He was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge James Ferrier, Orwigsburg, who set bail at $15,000 and Hickey was remanded to the Schuylkill County Prison pending posting of bail or his preliminary hearing.

Frackville, West Mahanoy Township, Shenandoah, Mahanoy City, and Pottsville Departments were all involved in the incident along with Frackville Ambulance.

Over a dozen dogs were rescued from a home in Pottsville last week.

According to Humane Officer, Janine Choplick, last Monday, an anonymous report was received for a concern of a large number of dogs at 246 Pierce Street, Pottsville.

When authorities responded on last Monday, a notice was left at the home when no one answered the door.  Multiple dogs could heard when they knocked on the door.

After no reply was received the following days, authorities returned on Friday.  The owner was home and asked authorities to take all 15 of the dogs in the home.

10 puppies, all 6 weeks old, and 5 adult dogs were taken from the home.  Choplick said all the dogs are very sweet but under socialized.  All will require house training, learn how to walk on a leash, and how to meet new people.  The puppies are not ready for adoption and the adults will need to be spayed and neutered.

All 15 dogs are now being taken care of at the Hillside SPCA, Pottsville.

The Pottsville Code Department was also notified an on Monday, the home was posted as "Unfit for Human Habitation".

The woman who lived in the home has not been charged.

Governor Wolf Makes Emergency Declarations for Northeast Pennsylvania Schools

In response to several Pennsylvania counties grappling with the effects of winter storm Stella, Governor Tom Wolf announced his administration will make emergency declarations to provide schools in Northeast Pennsylvania that were forced to close last week with options to otherwise satisfy the 180-day requirement.

“I understand the importance of keeping Pennsylvanians safe in times of emergency or in the case of a natural disaster, and this measure further extends those protections,” said Governor Wolf. “While recognizing the responsibility school administrators have to plan their calendars accordingly, this provides more flexibility in the face of unpredictable and unforeseen emergencies.”

Last week, schools in a number of counties, including Berks, Bradford, Carbon, Columbia, Lackawanna, Lehigh, Luzerne, Monroe, Northampton, Pike, Schuylkill, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Wayne, and Wyoming, expressed concerns they may not meet the number of required instructional days after being hit by winter storm Stella. Governor Wolf asked Secretary Rivera to make the emergency declarations for schools in those counties in accordance with Act 4 of 2016, which serves as a last resort for schools that are having difficulty meeting attendance requirements due to unpredictable emergencies. School administrators still must include a sufficient number of “make up” or “snow” days into their school calendars.

“School attendance impacts student achievement, and emergencies that require a school closing take away important instructional time,” said Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera. “While the top priority must be student safety, the Department’s goal is to ensure that schools are meeting the academic needs of students while also recognizing that extenuating circumstances do sometimes occur.”

Under Act 4, the Secretary of Education may issue a weather, safety, or health related emergency declaration at the request of a school or a charter school or on a county or statewide basis. The emergency declaration permits affected schools to institute options to otherwise satisfy the School Code’s 180 instructional day requirement.

When the Secretary of Education issues an emergency declaration following approval of a request, a school can satisfy the School Code’s instructional day requirement by:

1. Meeting a minimum of 900 hours of instruction at the elementary level and 990 hours of instruction at the secondary level in lieu of 180 days.

2. Scheduling of additional instructional days on one Saturday per month to complete 180 instructional days, or 900 hours at the elementary level and 990 hours at the secondary level. Student excusals for certain reasons are included in this option.

Both options must be approved by a majority vote of the school board or other governing body.

The Department of Education also reminds schools in counties outside those included in the emergency declaration, that they can still request an emergency declaration through PDE’s Office of School Services. PDE will then evaluate a school’s request on a series of factors

Police are warning residents of another phone scam that is being reported in the area.

On Wednesday March 22, 2017 The Pottsville Bureau of Police received two separate reports of an attempted phone scam that involves a caller claiming to be an employee with PP&L and that the victims’ residence/business owes money on their electric bill.

The caller continues to say that if payment is not made, PPL will cut electrical service to their residence/business within 30 minutes.  The caller then instructs the resident/business owner that in order to rectify the matter they must purchase prepaid gift cards and upon purchase to call them for further instructions as to where to send the cards to.

It is noted that caller ID’s show PPL with different 800 numbers attached.  At this point, 1-800-358-6623, 1-844-867-2387, and 1-855-406-4187 have been utilized.  However, these are not legitimate registered numbers for PP&L.

Resident and business owners are reminded PPL will not call and threaten to shut off power within 30 minutes nor do they accept gift cards for payment. If you receive such a call DO NOT give out any personal information and DO NOT send any form of currency.

If you are unsure about the situation call PP&L directly or your local law enforcement agency.
