An Amber Alert was issued for a 2 Year Old abducted in Columbia County.

UPDATE:  AMBER ALERT CANCELLED, Alexis and the vehicle were found close by and safe.

Columbia County State Police say, 2 Year Old, Alexis Weber, was abducted from 2200 West Front Street in Berwick on Sunday around 7:00 p.m.

She is described as 3 feet tall, 30 lbs., with blond hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a white coat, blue polka dot shirt, and black pants. Weber was inside a 2005 yellow Ford Mustang convertible with Pennsylvania registration HWN-1367.

The mustang was reportedly stolen while Alexis was still in the vehicle.

Anyone with information or has seen the vehicle, should call 911 immediately.

Eleanor (Yodis) Baddick, mother, and grandmother, 90 years of age, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 5, 2017, in the care of her daughter, and son-in-law in Jamison, Pennsylvania. 

She was the widow of William J. Baddick who died December 23, 1995.

Survived by; daughter, Mrs. Jessica Calcagno wife of John of Jamison, PA; grandchildren, Dr. Christopher J. Calcagno and his wife Amy, Dr. Scott W. Calcagno and his wife Katarina, Jeffrey Calcagno; 8 great grandchildren. 

A Tamaqua High School graduate, Eleanor was a store supervisor for Sears Stores in Abington, and North Wales for over twenty years. She was Catholic by faith and an avid skier. 

Born Tuesday, March 16, 1926 in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania the daughter of the late Joseph, and Tillie (Yankauskas) Masitis- Yodzewicg. She was also predeceased; by sisters, Mrs. Matilda (Masaitis) Backus, Mrs. Josephine (Masaitis) Sorrick-Messimer; brothers, Mr. Stiney Masaitis, Mrs. Joseph L. Marks, and Mr. Edward Yodis. 

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. of 655 East Broad Street Tamaqua, Pennsylvania 18252. (570) 668-2550.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 o'clock AM on Friday February 10, 2017 from St. Cyril of Jerusalem R.C.C. located at 1410 Almshouse Road Jamison, Pennsylvania 18929. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until time of services on Friday morning February 10, 2017 in church. 

Interment will be in SS. Peter & Paul R.C.C.C., Tamaqua, Pennsylvania.

Ida Irene (Herring) Spotts, born on February 17th, 1918, in Rock, PA, died peacefully on February 4th, 2017 at Schoolyard Square Assisted Living Facility, Pine Grove, PA.

She was the widow of Jay R. Spotts who passed away in 1996. She is survived by two sisters, Edna Staller and Ruth Kimmel (both in their 90’s). She is also survived by her two children and their spouses (Bob and Betsy Spotts and Cheryl and Steve Cranford), her treasured grandchildren, (Tara Hurt, Kip and Jay Owens, Addie Spotts Sterner, and Jesse Spotts), and her beloved 14 great grandchildren.

Ida lived her adult life on Long Run Road, Schuylkill Haven, until 2010 when at age 92 she moved to School Yard Square, Assisted Living in Pine Grove.

She loved being a mother and homemaker and was famous for her good cooking and baking (shoe fly pie was one of her specialties). When her children were older, Ida worked out of the home at Alpha Mills, in Schuylkill Haven.

First and foremost, Ida’s faith guided her life. She was a lifelong member of the First Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school late into her years and remained active in women’s society and bible study.

Throughout her life she served as the shining example to those around her with dedication to family and enthusiasm for life. She loved to play cards – pinochle was her choice and she enjoyed fellowship with the lovely friends through her card club. Ida, known affectionately by her 14 great grandchildren as Nanny Spotts, is deeply treasured by her family and they will always remain grateful for her love.

There will be a celebration of life service at First United Methodist Church, Schuylkill Haven, PA, on Saturday, February 11th, 2017 at 2 PM. Her family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be sent in honor of Ida Spotts to First United Methodist Church, General Fund, 420 Saylor Street, Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972.

John T. Holmes, 58, of Ashland,PA passed away Friday, February 3rd, 2017 in Ashland,PA Born in Ashland, PA September 16,1958 the son of the late Henry and Rosemary (Hancock) Holmes. He attended North Schuylkill Schools and last worked at Massers in Hegins,PA. He was a member of the Good Fellowship Club in Ashland. A brother Henry Holmes Jr. preceded him in death. Surviving are two sisters and six brothers: Donna wife of Harold Weikel, Ashland ; Rosemarie Holmes and her companion Harry ,Pottsville,PA; Robert Holmes, Locustdale,PA; George Holmes, Ashland; Joseph and his companion Kim, Pottsville,PA; William husband of Brenda Holmes, Ashland; Stephen husband of Barbara Holmes, Pottsville and David husband of Michelle Holmes of Locustdale,PA Nieces and nephews survive .

Memorial Service will be held at the Kull-Heizenroth Funeral Home, Ashland, PA Thursday, February 9th, at 7:30 PM with Rev. Paul L. Rothermel officiating.
Visitation Thursday 6:00-7:30 P.M. at the Kull-Heizenroth Funeral Home, Ashland.

Mary Louise Davis, 89, of Ashland, PA, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Friday, February 3 at 6:20pm. Loving sister to Peggy Hoban and Shirley Halko, beloved wife of Chester I. Davis, and devoted mother of Chet, Richard, and Robert.
Mary was born in Butler Township, PA on October 6, 1927 to the late John Kane and Anna Wolfgang. She graduated from Ashland High in 1946 and worked at Gellert’s Store for many years. Mary was married to Chester Davis on January 14, 1950; they were married 61 years.
She enjoyed bowling, playing her organ, vacationing on the beach in Fenwick Island and Ocean City, Maryland, playing cards and bingo, winning at the casino, cheering on Penn State footnall, and time with her family, friends and animals. She was an active volunteer/member of Ashland Voting Polls.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Chester Davis; and her parents John and Anna Kane.
Mary is survived by her children Chet husband of Sandra,Shamokin, Richard of Churchville, and Robert husband of Jessica, Danville; grandchildren Valerie, Melanie, Lauren, Eric, Jake, Brian, Isaac and Michael; great-grandchildren Emily, Jake, Callie and Natalie; and many other family and friends. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 8,2017 at 11:00 AM in Zion's Reformed UCC, Ashland,PA. Rev. David Grant Officiating. Interment in Brock Cemetery, Ashland,PA. Olga “Baba” Farrone, 86, Ashland passed away peacefully Thursday evening at Lehigh Valley Hospital Schuylkill East, Pottsville.

Born in Frackville, she was a daughter of the late Metro and Julia Dziczek Halupa. She worked as a union secretary until her retirement.

She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Ashland.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Farrone in 2012 and by her eight brothers.

Baba loved and devoted her life to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and is survived by her two sons: Lawrence Farrone and his wife Sandy Jo Roemer, Lavelle and Joseph and his wife Kathy Farrone, Ashland; two daughters: Mary and her husband Rick Gomez, Pottsville and Julia “Cookie” Farrone, Ashland; a sister: Julia Cresina, Frackville; nine grandchildren: Larry, Jennifer, Kevin, Matthew, Rena, Tony, Francesca, Joey and Anne; sixteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Ashland with Rev. Paul Rothermel, pastor, as the celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Mauritius Cemetery, Ashland. Friends may call at the Church on Thursday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of mass.

Pennsylvania Basic Boating Course at Sweet Arrow Lake

Sweet Arrow Lake County Park and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission are sponsoring a Basic Boating Education Course at the Sweet Arrow Lake County Park on February 25, 2017, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.



A Pennsylvania Boating Safety Education Certificate is required for all Pennsylvania residents born on or after January 1, 1982, to operate any boat greater than 25 horsepower and all operators of personal watercraft (commonly called jet skis). The course is scheduled for eight hours with a ½ hour lunch break (lunch is not provided). The course includes all necessary materials. Successful completion of the examination at the end of the course will result in the issuance of a temporary boating safety education certificate and enable the student to apply for a permanent boating safety education certificate.

Police Looking for Man Missing from From Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel Police Dept are asking for the public's help in locating Jeffrey Kays, 36, of Mount Carmel who was reported missing by his family on Sunday February 05,2017.

Kays was last seen by his family on Saturday at aprox. 1130amm Sunday. 

Kays is believed to be operating a silver 2016 Dodge Dart.

Pennsylvania Rep Introduces Bill to Make All Schools Begin New Year After Labor Day

Pennsylvania State Representative Robert Godshall, R-Montgomery County, has reintroduced a bill that would make it a law for all public schools Statewide to begin their new year after Labor Day.


Godshall reintroduced former House Bill 48, An Act amending the Public School Code of 1949, which is now House Bill 73, Opening of Schools after the Labor Day Holiday.

A 2006 university survey showed that the public supports the legislation 47 percent to 26 percent, Godshall wrote in a December 2016 memo to all Pennsylvania House of Representative members. Godshall said, “This bill was introduced as a way to ensure that Pennsylvania families get all the benefits of a full, traditional summer vacation, while not negatively impacting the education of students.” He continued to explain that he has received “many calls, e-mails and letters in support of it as well.”

Police are investigating the theft of copper piping.

The Saint Clair Police Department is seeking assistance with a theft investigation of the recent theft of copper piping from an apartment and garage located at 18 South 2nd St., Saint Clair.

Woman Charged in Incident

Frackville Borough Police have filed charges against Carisa Rhoads from an incident that occurred on October 31, 2016.

Police were notified by Schuylkill County Detectives Office to make contact with a Robert Carnell due to out standing warrants. When Police responded to Carnell's address Rhoads was unaware of his where about. Rhoads was advised to contact this department if Carnell was to show back at that address, and if Rhoads failed to do so, she would be arrested.

Police attempted to contact Carnell at the same location on January 18, 2017. Carnell was then located and taken into custody.


Carisa Rhoads is charged with one count of Obstructing Admin Law or Other Governmental, and one count of Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution. All charges will have to be answered to MDJ Hale, Frackville.

Man Facing Harassment Charges

Frackville Borough Police have filed charges on Edward Kennedy due to an incident that had occurred on January 9, 2017.

Police were notified from an on going incident involving Kennedy, harassing an individual, after Kennedy was notified to no longer make any type of contact.

Kennedy was charged with 2 counts of harassment. All charges will have to be answered to MDJ Hale, Frackville.

Body of Hunter Found in Butler Township

(02/07/17) The body of a hunter was found Tuesday morning in Butler Township.

The body of Robert J. Valent, 65, of Pottsville was found in a wooded area on Stein Road near High Road in Lavelle, Tuesday Morning.

Deputy Coroner Andrew Szczyglak pronounced Valent dead around 9:00am, Tuesday.

Szczyglak says the death does not appear to be suspicious. A virtual autopsy is scheduled.

Butler Township Police were also at the scene.

Tamaqua Police Officer Joins in on Basketball Game

While some Tamaqua kids were enjoying the warm weather and playing basketball, a borough Police Officer decided to join in.


Tamaqua Patrolman Jeremy Sborz says, on Monday afternoon, he was on patrol near the South Ward Playground, Tamaqua, when he says some kids enjoying the weather, and playing some basketball and decided to join in on their game.

Sborz walked up to the kids and asked if he could join in.  He says at first the kids were confused as to why the officer was walking up to them, but when he asked if he could play, they were excited to play against him.

Sborz says he played basketball with the kids for about an hour.

Leonard L. Blyler, Sr. 81, of Ashland, PA passed away Sunday, February 5th, 2017 at Vintage Knolls, Danville, PA.

Born in Hegins, PA August 29,1935 the son of the late Albert and Ida (Lucas) Blyler.
He attended Hegin's schools and was a member of Christ's United Lutheran Church, Ashland. He worked as a truck driver his whole working life, last working for Rick's Backhoe Service, Tremont, PA.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois (Jones) Blyler whom he married in 1957.
Also preceding him in death is a sister, Ruth Wetzel.

He is survived by three daughters and one son : Kathy Bixler of Hegins, PA; Sandra wife of Randy Hunter of Pine Grove, PA; Lenette wife of Jerry Nemitz, Layton, Utah; and Leonard Blyler Jr. husband of Jeanine, of Jonestown, PA. One sister: Ellen wife of Claude Knorr, Hegins, PA Seven grandchildren: Jennifer, Lindsey, Andy, Ryan, David, Kyle and Amanda. Six great grandchildren
Funeral Services will be held at Christ's United Lutheran Church, Ashland, PA, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 11th, with Rev. Dr. Kim Lengert officiating.

Thomas R. Schofstal, 63, of Llewellyn, passed away on Sunday at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Schuylkill – East Norwegian Street.

Born in Pottsville, he was a son of the late Robert and Rose Wedro Schofstal. He was a 1971 graduate of Minersville Area High School, and received his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Lock Haven University. He taught Physical Education at the elementary school level for over 35 years before retiring.

Tom was a member of the East Ward Social Club, Schuylkill Haven, where he would spend time with his golfing buddies. He enjoyed spending Tuesday evenings with his “wolfpack” at the Greystone Restaurant.

He is survived by his wife, the former Terry Novitsky, to whom he was married for 37 years; his son, Ryne Schofstal and his wife, Adrienne Stone, Chicago; a sister, Carol Rada and her husband, Gregory, Lebanon; a nephew, Gregory Rada II; a niece, Lesley Boyd, two great nephews, Gregory Rada III and Tyler Boyd; two great nieces, Alexandra Rada and Aubrey Boyd; an aunt, Janet Dinko, Troy, New York.

Relatives and friends are invited to offer comfort and support to Tom’s family on Wednesday from 6:00 P.M. at Dutcavich Funeral Home, 200 Sunbury Street, Minersville. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers contributions to the Knights of Columbus Council 431, 106 North Sixth Street, Pottsville, PA 17901 in support of their Thanksgiving Dinner Project.

Florence Frye, 94, of Brandonville, was born into eternity on Monday, February 6th, 2017.

Born in Shenandoah, on September 16, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Frances and Joseph Kalkis.

Florence operated a beauty shop out of her home in Brandonville until her retirement. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Ringtown.

She loved playing cards and bingo and was a member of the Shenandoah Senior Citizens, the Ringtown Senior Citizens and the Sheppton-Oneida Senior Citizens.

She was also a member of St. Mary's Church in Ringtown.

The last member of her immediate family, Florence was preceded in death by sisters, Anna Bell, Frances Kargol, Betty Sverha, Josephine Kull, Margaret Highland and a brother Joseph Kalkis.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph "Ginger" Frye on August 28, 1999.

Many nieces and nephews survive.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at at St. Mary's Church, Ringtown, at 11 AM on Saturday, February 11th, 2017. Burial will take place at Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery, Shenandoah, immediately following mass. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Florence's family from 10 AM until the time of the mass at the church on Saturday morning.

Storm Watch...which is in effect from Wednesday evening through
Thursday morning.

* LOCATIONS...Central and Southern Mountains and the Susquehanna
Valley.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...4 to 8 inches.

* TIMING...Snow will begin over the central mountains early
Wednesday evening. Rain and snow will begin early Wednesday
evening over the Lower Susquehanna Valley, with a changeover to
all snow between 10 pm and 2 am. A period of heavy snow is
likely late evening into the overnight.

* IMPACTS...The heavy snow will create snow covered roads and
produce scattered power outages.

WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 10 PM THIS EVENING TO 10 AM EST THURSDAY...

The National Weather Service in STATE COLLEGE has issued a Winter Storm Warning...which is in effect from 10 PM this evening to 10 AM EST Thursday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

Hazardous Weather...

* Rain late in the evening briefly mixes with sleet before quickly changing to snow after midnight.

* Snow intensity increases through the predawn hours with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

* Heaviest snow ending around daybreak with snow tapering off by mid morning.

* Total snow accumulation 5 to 8 inches.

* Temperatures falling below freezing Thursday with 25 to 30 mph wind gusts into the afternoon.

Impacts...

* Dangerous travel conditions on snow covered roads with very low visibility.

* Heavy snow will impact the early morning commute with very slow speeds and increased risk for accidents.

Man Wanted for Murder in Reading Reportedly Spotted in Schuylkill County

A man wanted for murder in the city of Reading has been reported to have been in Schuylkill County.


According to Minersville Police, Elree Williams, AKA "Grubby" and is a member of the Crips and also goes by "Taz".

Williams is wanted for a murder in the City of Reading and has been reportedly in Minersville.

Anyone who observes Williams is asked to call Minersville Police at 570-544-6212.

Police say do not approach Williams as he is considered armed and dangerous.

Rose Corneliussen, 88, of Barnesville, PA, passed away Monday, February 6th, at Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport PA.

Rose was born in New Boston, PA on March 9, 1928, a daughter of the late Frances and John Koneschusky.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church Mahanoy City.

Rose attended Lincoln Grade School in Morea and Mahanoy Twp High School.

She was wife of the late Arne Corneliussen.

Rose is survived by two sons Victor Corneliussen, husband of Helie of Coundersport; George Corneliussen, husband of June of Cincinnati Ohio; and by a sister, Stella Lysebo, of Bridgewater NJ.

She is also survived by 1 Grandchild, and 3 Great Grandchildren.

Rose is preceded in death by a Grand daughter Cari-Ann Corneliussen/Pogwist, Brothers Joe, John, Henry, Frank, and Sisters Betty Lapinski and Josephine Cyran.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Louis D. Truskowsky Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Mahanoy City, PA, at 1 PM on Saturday, February 11th, with Rev Fred Crawford officiating.

Friends may call Saturday from 11AM to1PM.

Interment will follow at Skyview Memorial Park Hometown.

Walter “Wally” Borzok, 94, of Frackville, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Monday at Shenandoah Senior Living Center.

Born in Philadelphia, August 17, 1922, he was a son of the late Gregory and Sophie Voss Borzok.

He attended Frackville and schools and in 1940 enlisted in the US Navy.

He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He was a Machinist’s Mate First and served on the USS Astoria, USS Childs and the USS Antietam. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal with 1 Star; American Area and Defense Medals; the Philippine Defense Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

Walter was a member of the Annunciation BVM Catholic Church, the American Legion Post #398; the Rev. James A. Hogan, Knights of Columbus Council #2580 and the Altamont Fire Company; all of Frackville

He worked as a meter reader for the Pennsylvania American Water Company for 24 years.

Walter was preceded in death by his wife Leona Banket Borzok, in 2008; brothers; George and Anthony Borzok; sisters; Helen Borzok and Gerry Ann Larson; he was the last member of his immediate family.

He is survived by two sons; Walter J. Borzok and his wife Marlene; Richard Borzok and his wife Michele; all of Frackville; a daughter; Tina Blundi and husband Tony, Obelisk; seven grandchildren; Larissa, Shane, Emily and Shelly Borzok; Brandon Borzok and his wife Jaelynn; Kristen and Katie Blundi; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning in Annunciation BVM Catholic Church, Frackville, with Rev. Robert. Finlan, pastor as celebrant. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation Saturday morning from 9:30 till time of Mass, at the Church. Interment with Military Honors will be Monday at 1:00 p.m. in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Wally’s name to St. Joseph’s Parish Memorial Fund, 7 S. Broad Mountain Ave., Frackville and/or the Charity of your choice.
