The monthly meeting of the Pottsville Area School Board Tuesday night brought many changes to staffing at the district.

During the meeting, numerous votes were held to rearrange administration positions as well as move employees from Full Time to Part Time positions and also suspend several employees as well.

The first vote created a new Special Education Supervisor position as JSC Elementary and was followed by a vote to transfer the Assistant Principal of JSC, Deneen Reese, to the new position.

The assistant principal position was then eliminated.

Next, 13 employees from across the district had their status changed from from full-time to part-time effective the 2020-2021 school year keeping their same rate of pay.

Those names included Michelle Aungst, Karen Bevan, Susan Griffin, David Hess, Bernadette Ott, Kimberly Pekarik, Tessa Remaley, Karen Runkle, Diane Schweikert, Brittany Stevenosky, Kathy Thompson, Christine Trapani, and Kathleen Weiss.  It was not said what kind of positions these employees held in the district.

The board then voted to accept a proposal to suspend 6 temporary and professional employees.  Those employees names were not announced but the board sited that the suspensions were because of "Due to the substantial decline in enrollment, in order to curtail its educational programs and conform with standards of organization and educational activities, as well as maintain a thorough and efficient public school system".

The board then voted to suspended 7 nonprofessional employees. These suspension also were reportedly "Due to the substantial decline in enrollment, in order to curtail its educational programs and conform with standards of organization and educational activities, as well as maintain a thorough and efficient public school system".

A final vote was held to maintain "Full Day" kindergarten in the district.  The district allocated funding through the Emergency Relief Fund to continue full day through the 2020-2021 school year.

This funding was noted that if it was not obtained, the board would have had to furlough the district's kindergarten positions.

Floodwaters Down in Gilberton, Clean Up Begins

The flood waters have finally receded in Gilberton but now the cleanup begins.

Almost a week since the flooding began in the small borough of Gilberton, the floodwaters are back to a normal level.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Main Street and Railroad Street were clear of water as residents went back into their homes to begin cleanup.

The hardest hit homes had piles of furniture and other items on their sidewalks that were ruined by water on their first floor and basement.

PPL was out late Tuesday and early Wednesday restoring power to many of the homes.

Now that the waters are down and clean up has started, the worry isn't over as water still continues to leak through the "cribben" from the nearby Mahanoy Creek.  Many of the locals call the wall next to the nearby railroad tracks and Mahanoy Creek, the "cribben".

Route 924/Main Street and the Route 924 off ramp also remains closed while cleanup continues.

The investigation continues as to the exact cause of this past weeks flooding.

Girardville Mayor Announces Collection for Gilberton Flood Victims

$

On Friday, the Mayor of Girardville announced the borough would begin collecting for the victims of the Gilberton Flooding.

From the Mayor Michael Zangari, Mayor of Girardville

On June 11th, 2020, the borough of Gilberton was quickly and unexpectedly flooded, giving residents very little time to prepare. Throughout the course of that day, water continued to rise swiftly and evacuations had to occur. Residents who were affected had to leave their homes without being able to remove their belongings. Over the next few days, many homes on the south side of main street had flood water of over 4’ on the first floor. For many residents, their first floor includes their kitchen, dining room, living room, laundry room, etc... Homes sustained damage to their basements as well. Damages in the basement included hot water heaters, boilers/furnaces, electrical panelsand other core components to their homes. This does not include the large amount of debris brought in by the flood water including but not limited to silt, mud, oil, sewage, sand, stone, etc.

Many residents do not have flood insurance and are on a fixed income which makes clean up and recovery very difficult. As the mayor of Girardville, I met with Gilberton Borough officials to offer my assistance in any way possible. The decision was made that the borough of Girardville will begin to accept “essential items” to aid in the recovery efforts.

Essential items include:

cleaning supplies, bleach, Dawn dish soap, buckets, hand pump sprayers, mops, towels, sponges, tarps, boxes/containers, toiletries, gloves (work and disposable), masks, eye protection, hand sanitizer, garbage bags, non-perishable food, clothing, etc…

drop off location:

Girardville Municipal Building: June 22nd, 2020 to July 2nd, 2020

Monday – Friday

8am to 11 am and 12pm to 2pm.

To schedule a drop off of supplies not during business hours, contact

Mayor Michael Zangari at 570-276-1635.
• All monetary donations can be made through https://www.gofundme.com/f/gilberton-borough-flooded-residents
• Girardville borough will not accept any monetary donations!
• Furniture is currently not being accepted. A furniture drive may be announced at a later date.

Thank you in advance for your support as we help our neighbors get back on their feet

Girardville Fire Chief Gives Thanks to Local Volunteer Firefighters

After rescuing a man from a burning building in the borough of Girardville earlier this week, Fire Chief Frank Zangari says the real heroes are the volunteer firefighters that came to assist at the scene.

Just prior to 7:45pm, Tuesday, emergency personnel were dispatched to 341 North 2nd Street in Girardville, for a working structure fire.

Girardville Fire Chief Frank Zangari was first to arrive on scene and found heavy smoke coming from the three attached homes of 339, 341, and 343.

A check for occupants led to the finding of  Andrew Petrosky inside one of the homes trying to escape. Zangari said he found the victim disoriented inside the smoke filled home and pulled him out to safety.  Petrosky was not injured.

After many of the headlines from news sources like Fire and Film read "Girardville Fire Chief Pulls One Out of House Fire" or the Republican Herald read "Girardville Chief Rescues Man from House Fire",  Chief Zangari contacted Skook News, personally, to thank all the volunteers who came to the scene to help.

"The real kudos goes to the men and women who showed up that day at a moment's notice" Chief Zangari said Friday morning.

Zangari said even though he was the first firefighter on scene, any of the other volunteers would have made the grab.

Firefighters from surrounding Schuylkill County and Northumberland County communities responded to the scene for the fire including Ashland, Mahanoy City, Shenandoah, Frackville, Mount Carmel, West Mahanoy Township, and Butler Township.

"Our fire companies work great together and are always helping others.  At the drop of a hat, they will drop everything to come to your aid" said Zangari.

Zangari also specifically thanked the dispatchers at the Schuylkill County Communications Center.  "Every call starts there", Zangari said.  "Every second counts at the scene of an emergency, and without their professionalism, any situation could have a whole different outcome."

Zangari also thanked Ashland Fire Chief Philip Groody during the fire. "He is like a brother to me, and I know when I need him at the scene, he will have my back, and I will have his.  While I focused on getting the victim out of the home, Chief Groody was establishing a water supply." Zangari said.

Zangari also referenced the aid that was provided to Gilberton during flooding over the last week.

"When disaster hits anywhere in Schuylkill County, help will be on the way" Zangari said.  "No matter who, what, when or where.".

During the flooding, help came from all over Schuylkill County and parts of Northumberland to help in pumping flood waters and helping evacuate victims.

"These volunteers deserve all the credit" Zangari said.

Zangari also said there is always a need for more volunteer firefighters.  "You don't necessarily need to fight fires to be a member of a fire company.  We always need help rolling hose, cleaning up, and helping with fundraisers."  Zangari said anyone interested should reach out to their local fire company.
