Obituaries for Schuylkill County and the surrounding areas.

----------------------------------------------------

Richard W. Kemmery, age 73, died April 17, 2020 at home in Frackville surrounded by his immediate family. Richard died peacefully in his sleep after a hard fought battle with mounting health issues.

Richard is survived by his wife of nearly 44 years, Kathy, their four children Brian Kemmery, Megan Kemmery Reister, Mark Kemmery, and Patrick Kemmery, two daughters-in-law, Alisha and Liz, one son-in law, Adam, and eight adoring grandchildren Mason Noelle, Clark, Braden, Nicholas; Charlotte Ann; Thomas, Benjamin, and Daniel.

Richard is an Air Force veteran having completed 20 years of service to his beloved branch, retiring as Master Sergeant. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War, during which he served as a special operator combat controller. For his heroic service, he earned multiple medals and continued his Air Force career as an air traffic controller at Dover Air Force Base, during which time he met a special education teacher from Pittsburgh and asked her to dance - the first step which led to the dedicated family who supported him at his bedside until his final breath.

He grew up in Port Carbon, the son of his parents Robert "Pop" and Alice Appleby Kemmery. He was preceded in death by both parents and his brother Robert and sisters Ollie and Ruth. He dedicated his life to serving his country, family, and community.

After his retirement from the Air Force at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborn, Ohio, he continued his service to his former brothers and sisters in arms and current veterans by working as an accountant for the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Prior to working for the VA, he was employed as a purchasing agent at H.L. Miller’s in Schuylkill Haven. He coached his sons' Little League baseball teams, acted as Cub Scout den leader, served on the Advisory Committee of Holy Family School, was a member of the Frackville Knights of Columbus Council 2580 and spent countless hours supporting every endeavor his four children pursued. He, himself, pursued and enjoyed several hobbies: motorcycle riding, flying airplanes through his private pilot’s license, playing golf, watching baseball, gathering with fellow Pottsville High School Class of ’65 alum (during which he loved to reminisce about his days of playing the drums in PAHS' band) at their monthly breakfasts, and taking road trips with Kathy.

In keeping with the theme of service to the community, Richard worked at Schuylkill County Housing Authority, was a volunteer paramedic, and Frackville Little League treasurer. After his next retirement, with Kathy by his side, their volunteer work continued as they visited local nursing homes with their loyal collie dog, they delivered Meals on Wheels, and joined the prison ministry team allowing him to share his Catholic faith after having converted 45 years ago. Even in his last years, whether traveling to be with his children and grandchildren or serving those closer to home, he always focused on those most in need. His work life and volunteer efforts mirror the values he exhibited daily as a husband, father, and grandfather. The needs of others remained his top priority throughout his entire life.

A private family service will be held at St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, Schuylkill Haven, PA and he will be interred at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Live streaming services will be available at 10:30 a.m. Thursday April 23rd via a link that can be found on www.thomasmsullivanfuneralhome.com

In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s name can be made to the American Heart Association at PO Box 417005 Boston, MA 02241-7005 would be very much appreciated.

On Wednesday, D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc., celebrated the 50th anniversary of Earth Day with new, limited-edition American Eagle Foundation (AEF) Yuengling Traditional Lager cans in honor of its partnership with the nonprofit.

AEF is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring the national community to guard and protect the U.S. National Symbol, the Bald Eagle. An integral part of Yuengling’s rich history, the Bald Eagle has been prominently featured on the brand’s logo since its founding in 1829 and commemorates the values of strength, independence, and resiliency that have been essential to the brand’s success for almost two centuries.

The packaging for the AEF Traditional Lager cans includes a new patriotic “Let’s Go USA” design, communicating to consumers and fans alike, the pride and independent spirit inherent in both the Bald Eagle and Yuengling brand. With the limited-edition AEF Traditional Lager cans, fans at home are encouraged to support and contribute to the conservation and protection of Bald Eagles and their natural habitats. Consumers who are interested in helping to conserve and protect the Bald Eagle can donate at https://www.eagles.org.

“In 1829, our family founded the Yuengling Brewery, originally named the Eagle Brewery, and debuted the iconic eagle symbol as our logo. Nearly 200 years later, the Bald Eagle remains an integral part of our brand’s identity, and a symbol of strength and inspiration for our family and fans,” said Debbie Yuengling, Employee Engagement & Culture Manager and 6th generation family member at D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. “We are proud to bring further awareness to AEF’s mission and the great work they have done to conserve and protect our national symbol. It is our hope that, through our contribution, we can help to keep the Bald Eagle flying strong and free for generations to come.”

The 12-ounce, 12-pack and 24-pack AEF Traditional Lager cans will be available for purchase throughout Yuengling’s entire 22-state footprint. These special cans are a part of a year-long partnership with AEF, which also includes:

Yuengling-Sponsored Eagle Nest Cam

Earlier this year, Yuengling invited fans around the world to tune into AEF's high-definition, live-streaming Northeast Florida (NEFL) Bald Eagle Nest Cam to witness the incredible Bald Eagle nesting process. In mid-January, fans watched in anticipation as a Bald Eagle named Gabrielle laid two eggs, which later hatched into newborn eaglets named Jules and Romy. As organizations embrace virtual Earth Day celebrations this year, Yuengling encourages viewers at home to join Gabrielle and her partner Samson to observe as they care for their offspring and start a new chapter in NEFL history. Participants can also engage with AEF moderators in real-time and comment or ask questions about the eagles and their eaglets.

Eaglet Release
This summer, fans will also have the opportunity to watch, via nest cam, as an eaglet takes flight into the wild in honor of a fallen service member. Through Yuengling’s partnership and support, AEF has sustained its successful breeding and rehabilitation programs for the care and release of hundreds of Bald Eagles, which is an extension of AEF’s mission. Fans can follow the brewery and AEF on social media to learn more about future eaglet releases.

“The partnership between Yuengling and the American Eagle Foundation has been a highlight of 2020 for us,” said Jessica Hall, Executive Director at the American Eagle Foundation. “Yuengling’s donation allows us to continue our efforts of education, conservation and rehabilitation of the Bald Eagle and other native birds of prey. We couldn’t be more excited to see our logo on the iconic Yuengling Traditional Lager can!”

In times of need, an organization in Pottsville stepped up and wanted to make a difference.

Story and Photos by Jocelyn Hcarah/Danie Mae Photography LLC

Dustin’s Adventureland, wanted to ensure that children in Pottsville and surrounding areas would be able to get a lunch if needed, along with first responders.

“The program started in the middle of March, when the schools shut down. There was nothing set up to provide the children lunches. With our group, we decided to try to put something together to serve lunches. We put it together pretty quickly. We started out with only 50 children. I contacted Terry Alexander from the soup kitchen to get some connections with food, and St. Pat’s Church generously gave us use of their facility. We were able to expand to 100 kids from 50, and now we are averaging 160 kids, plus we serve grocery store workers, first responders, etc. We are actually maxed out with the routes that we have.” Jeffrey Dunkel stated.

“The support has been pretty overwhelming, Skook Auto Sales has been our biggest supporter since the beginning. Next week is sponsored by Vintage 61 Store House in Deer Lake. We also did a facebook fundraiser, the original goal was $1,000, by the end of that day we surpassed the goal. Eventually, we reached $4,300. Actually, on Thursday night me and Jimmy Womer, the president of our group, are shaving our heads due to reaching the goal amounts.” said Dunkel.

Right now the group is planning on serving lunches until the end of May. At that point, all the volunteers will hopefully be going back to their normal jobs when the pandemic ceases to exist.

Some of the volunteers on Wednesday, included Eric Salen, Eric Salen Jr., Adrianna Bodnar, Charles Shuster, Sarah Moyer, Megan Mike, and Jodece Hook. At the end of the day, April 22nd, the program has served over 4,400 meals.

Dustin's Adventureland is a 501c3 that is working on constructing Schuylkill County's first ever playground for children with special needs.  The group was also organizing the 2nd Annual Dustin's Special Egg Hunt which is Schuylkill County only egg hunt that was developed for children with special needs.

Stay tuned later Thursday to watch the Facebook live video of some of the volunteers shaving their heads!

Skook News will share when the video goes live!
