Following an initial review of the recent death of inmate Tyrone Briggs at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Mahanoy, Department of Corrections (DOC) Secretary John Wetzel, on Friday, suspended 13 employees pending the outcome of any criminal and administrative investigations.

The Pennsylvania State Police is investigating the matter.

The DOC will not release the names of the suspended individuals, but confirms that the employees include medical and security staff. Suspensions are without pay pending the outcome of the investigations.

"Whatever the outcome of this case, we are going to be as transparent as possible, and the DOC will take whatever remedial measures deemed to be necessary," Secretary Wetzel said.

n November 11, 2019, at 3:20 PM, inmate Tyrone Briggs was reported to be involved in an altercation with another inmate on the walkway near their housing unit.

While waiting to be processed into the restricted housing unit, Briggs became unresponsive. Medical was notified, and Briggs was transported to the prison’s medical triage area where CPR was started. Briggs was pronounced dead by Dr. Saifullah at 4:56 PM.

Briggs, 29, was serving a 15-to-30-year sentence for rape of a child out of Philadelphia County. He was committed to the Department of Corrections on August 19, 2008, and had been at SCI Mahanoy since August 2011.

Wetzel also noted that this incident should not serve to tarnish the reputation of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections and its 16,000 dedicated men and women who work every day toward a goal of providing public safety and reducing recidivism.

One person was injured Friday morning in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 in Mahanoy Township.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, the crash involved three vehicles, A Chevrolet Cruze driven by Mark Kessler, 54, of Winston Salem, NC, A Red Hawk Motor Home, driven by Howard Teeter, 59, of Windsor, NY, and a Tractor Trailer driven by Daniel Antonetti, 61, of Port Jervis, NY.

Police say the accident occurred around 11:30am, Friday, November 15, 2019 in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 near Mile Marker 132.5 in Mahanoy Township.

Police say the crash occurred when Kessler, for an undetermined reason, veered to the right into a weigh station entrance lane.  Kessler's vehicle impacted the guiderail.

Antonelli, reportedly saw the crash occur in his rearview mirror and began to pull over to call 911.

As Kessler bounced off the guiderail, he veered to the left and sideswiped Teeter.

According to police, at this point, Kessler began to rapidly accelerate, strike the guiderail and veer across the lane of travel.

Kessler continue south on Interstate 81 until he ran directly into the trailer of Antonetti who was parked.

At this point, all vehicles involved in the crash were stopped.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and Kessler was transported via Ryan Township Rescue to an area hospital with unknown injuries.

No other injuries were reported by anyone else involved and all drivers were reported to be wearing seatbelts.

Kessler's vehicle was severely damaged in the crash and was towed from the scene.

Santa will skydive and parachute into Veteran's Memorial Stadium, next to Shenandoah Valley High School at 12:00pm.  Gates will open at 10:30am.

If weather forces Santa to cancel his Skydive, he will arrive at the stadium by helicopter or firetruck.

Following Santa’s arrival, he will parade through the town along with the Shenandoah Valley High School Band, local fire trucks and the Shenandoah Police Department.

Minersville and Ryan Township to Receive State Grants for Pedestrian, Vehicular Safety

Last week, State Rep. Neal P. Goodman and state Sen. David Argall announced that Minersville and Ryan Township will receive state grants to improve pedestrian and vehicular safety.

“l want to congratulate Minersville and Ryan Township officials for putting together strong applications and securing these substantial grants that will help with these important projects,” said Goodman, D-Schuylkill.

“I would like to thank Ryan Township and Minersville officials for applying for these important projects, which will make a real difference for local residents and people traveling here to visit. I know that both have been long-sought goals here and that the funding program is very, very competitive,” Argall said.

Minersville will receive a $736,000 grant for streetscape improvements along Sunbury Street. The borough plans to remove and replace deteriorated sidewalks and curbing and to install street lights. The project includes installation of five roof drain pipes, 1,116 square yards of concrete sidewalk, 2,310 linear feet of concrete curb restoration, pavement restoration and 35 acorn-style light poles.

"As a child, I remember happily walking down a very aesthetic Sunbury Street,” said Minersville Council Vice President Ian Mahal. “However, the last 30 years has taken a toll on our town and main street. This grant will continue the transformation and revitalization of Minersville. Unsafe and deteriorated sidewalks from Brough Hall to Third Street will be replaced with new safe sidewalks and curbs, while the main business section of town will be beautifully lit with decorative lighting seen in most quaint towns. This will all be accomplished without any costs to our taxpaying citizens."

Ryan Township will receive $176,372 to repair 885 linear feet of Locust Lake Road at the entrance to Locust Lake State Park, where the subbase of the road has failed. The project will include the installation of a new subbase, base and overlay, as well as storm water improvements.

Both grants were awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority through the Multimodal Transportation Fund Program. The Commonwealth Financing Authority was established in 2004 as an independent agency of the Department of Community and Economic Development to administer Pennsylvania's economic stimulus packages.

Ashland Junior Girl Scouts Presented with Bronze Award

Three Ashland Junior Girls Scouts were presented last week with the Bronze Award.

Last Monday, November 11, 2019 , Ava Hubler, Elizabeth Nahodil, and Katelyn Nahodil were officially presented their Bronze Awards, earned while they were Junior level Scouts.

The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. These girls completed multiple steps to reach this achievement.

The Bronze Award project selected by the girls was to create a book collection of new and gently used books for those who utilize the Ashland Area Food Bank. Books can be taken and kept or brought back and exchanged. The girls selected this project after learning more about literacy and the impact of socio-economic factors. They recognized that those who utilize the food bank may not be able to purchase books of their own. They organized a book drive to get the collection started and continue to receive donations from family, friends and community members.

Members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and Rev. Dana Beil have been supportive of these efforts, providing a permanent home for the bookshelves and helping to fill them.

A special thanks to the family that donated the book shelves

Girl Scout Leader, Deborah Hubler said "These girls are making a difference in the world with direct impact in their local community. We are so very proud of their achievement and the example they are setting for our younger members."
