Students from STC are working on a year-long project to convert a former Tastykake delivery truck into a fully functioning food truck. Each of the program areas at STC will participate in the project.

Progress on this project began in the spring of 2019, when Collision Repair students sanded down the body of the truck and Welding students extended the frame to accommodate the propane tanks. Auto Repair Technology Students then put in new brake lines and worked on the engine. Collision students are now installing the propane generator onto the undercarriage of the vehicle. The next step will be for Plumbing and Collision students to install the clean and grey water tanks. All plumbing supplies for this project have been donated by Antz Energy Systems of Shenandoah. Fromm Electric, of Schuylkill Haven, has pledged to donate electrical supplies.

STC has raised $42,803 in donations to fund this project, which is being conducted in conjunction with the Schuylkill Area Community Foundation.

State Grant Announced for the Schuylkill River Trail

    $
    0
    0
A state grant will help close a gap in the Schuylkill River Trail in Auburn Borough and support improvements that will create new recreation and transportation opportunities for local residents, according to Senator David G. Argall (R-29) and Representative Mike Tobash (R-125).
The $367,500 grant from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) will support the construction of .15 miles of trail from River Road to the Auburn Bridge Road. The project will also include construction of a ramp and retaining wall, landscaping, ADA accessibility features and other site improvements.

Earlier this year, the Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area announced that the Auburn Bridge would be rehabilitated to extend the trail and close one of the last remaining gaps in the Schuylkill River Trail from Frackville to Philadelphia. The extension project is expected to be completed in 2020.

The dead-end in the trail near Auburn was a source of frustration for trail users for decades, Argall said.

“The Schuylkill River Trail near Auburn Township is one of the most scenic trails in all of Pennsylvania, and it provides an extremely valuable means of recreation and transportation for people who work in neighboring communities,” Argall said. “It not only supports new recreation opportunities, but also highlights the natural beauty of our area and provides another way to connect the growing communities in southern Schuylkill and northern Berks counties.”

“In addition to creating new recreational opportunities in the area, this project offers an alternate path for community residents to travel back and forth without using SR 61,” Tobash said. “Creating another way for members of the community to travel will create a safer environment for motorists, bicyclists, joggers and other people who travel between Schuylkill and Berks counties.”

The grants were awarded as part of DCNR’s Community Conservation Partnerships Program, which provides funding for planning, acquisition of land, construction, and rehabilitation and maintenance of trails and trail-related facilities.

An alumni of the Schuylkill Technology talked to Mahanoy Area students recently.

On Monday, Journeyman Electrician, Taylor Pecika, a member International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 743 in Reading spoke to 9th grade students at Mahanoy Area school District to talk about the benefits of the Schuylkill Technology Center.

Taylor, who is employed by H.B. Frazer Company, is a graduate of the Mahanoy Area School District and a 2012 graduate of the Residential Industrial Electricity Program at Schuylkill Technology Center.

Taylor was looking towards attending college until he heard the presentation from the IBEW while he was attending the Residential & Industrial Electricity program at STC-South. Taylor expressed interest and contacted the union and applied for their apprenticeship program. The application process consists of completing an aptitude test and depending on your score, meeting a panel of electrical contractors to test the applicant’s knowledge of electricity. Once an applicant is accepted into the apprenticeship, they will work during the day and take evening classes for 5 years and ultimately complete 8000 hours of training, both in the field and in the jobsite.

Taylor is one of the youngest union foreman in the IBEW and is an example of how following your own path and working hard will pay off. The goal of Taylor's presentation to the Mahanoy Area 9th grade students, was to inspire some students to look towards the trades.
