A man under the influence caused a dangerous situation near Ringtown Saturday afternoon.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, the incident began around 1:30pm, when David Houser, 55, of Ringtown was southbound on Ringtown Boulevard,  approximately 1/2 mile north of Route 924 near the entrance to the windmill farm.

Police say Houser was "under the influence of some type of intoxicating substance" and began to lose consciousness.

Houser's vehicle went off the northbound side of the road, striking a rocky embankment and ripping the muffler and a fender liner from the vehicle.

Houser reentered the roadway and continued northbound down the mountain where he began to lose consciousness for a 2nd time and crossed into northbound traffic nearly striking an oncoming vehicle. swerved back across the road and continued North.

Houser then lost consciousness a 3rd time drifting into the northbound lanes, striking and shearing off a mailbox at the Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall, then drove into fencing at an adjacent residence before coming to a stop.

Houser was revived by Ringtown and Frackville Rescue/EMS units, then transported to an area hosptial.

Police will file charges on Houser based on testing conducted.

Assisting Police at the scene was the Ringtown Valley Fire Company.

Priest Removed from Ministry After Alleged Sexual Abuse of Minor that Occurred in Shenandoah Decades Ago

A priest has removed from ministry after allegations were reported of sexual abuse of a minor in Shenandoah decades ago.

According to the Archdiocese of Allentown, Father Robert J. Potts, pastor of St. Ursula Church, Fountain Hill (Bethlehem), has been removed from ministry pending investigation of an allegation that he sexually abused a minor in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The allegation was made recently to the administrators of the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program, who then notified the Diocese. The Diocese had no prior knowledge of the allegation until being notified by program administrators. The program was established by the Diocese to provide compensation to abuse victims as one part of their healing.

On the day he was notified of the allegation, Bishop Alfred Schlert immediately removed Father Potts from ministry and immediately directed that law enforcement be notified.

The removal of Father Potts from ministry at this time is not a determination of guilt, but rather a precautionary measure until the appropriate investigations are completed.

The abuse allegedly occurred when Father Potts, now 82, was pastor of the former St. George Parish, Shenandoah. He was ordained in March 1964.

As part of its cooperation with law enforcement, the Diocese sought the guidance of the Schuylkill County District Attorney’s office regarding the appropriate timing of a public announcement.

Parishioners of St. Ursula’s were informed of the allegation at all Masses this weekend.

Penn State Health Announces Intent to Purchase Holy Spirt Health System from Geisinger

Penn State Health and Geisinger announced Tuesday the signing of a letter of intent to transfer ownership of Holy Spirit Health System to Penn State Health.

Target date for completion of the transaction is by June 30, 2020, dependent upon regulatory timeline and approval.

Specifically, the letter of intent is for the two health organizations to enter into a member substitution agreement for Penn State Health to replace Geisinger as the sole corporate member of Holy Spirit Health System.

“We have considered many options for Geisinger Holy Spirit to move forward, and we believe we have the right organization in Penn State Health,” said Geisinger President and Chief Executive Officer, Jaewon Ryu, M.D. “We already work together on joint programs such as neurosurgery and cardio-thoracic surgery in the Harrisburg region. This is a positive next step for Holy Spirit to continue its legacy of providing quality, compassionate care to this community.”

The transfer includes Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, its affiliated outpatient practices and urgent care centers, as well as the Ortenzio Heart Center and West Shore EMS in the Holy Spirit market.

“This makes sense for both organizations, and more importantly for the people in the Cumberland County and Greater Harrisburg region,” said Steve Massini, Penn State Health chief executive officer. “People in these growing communities will continue to have local choice and access to the health services they need to live their lives the way they want.”

Geisinger has invested more than $120 million at Holy Spirit, recruited nearly 100 new providers, and added or expanded important services including trauma, stroke and diabetes care since Holy Spirit joined Geisinger in October 2014.

“By enabling our patients from Cumberland and Perry counties to be cared for closer to home at Holy Spirit, we can create increased capacity for patients in need of the kind of complex care that is only available in our region at Hershey Medical Center,” Massini said.

He added that Penn State Health intends to honor Holy Spirit’s catholic tradition and sponsorship by the Sisters of Christian Charity, “just as we have done in Berks County following the addition of St. Joseph Regional Health Network into our organization in 2015.”

Ownership of Holy Spirit Hospital will not affect Penn State Health’s plans to open Hampden Medical Center, its new, 108-bed adult hospital under construction in Hampden Twp., Cumberland County.
