Tractor Trailer Spills Over 17 Thousand Pounds of Pierogie Ingredients near Shenandoah and Gilberton

A tractor trailer hauling pierogie ingredients made a mess near Shenandoah and Gilberton early Friday.

Just after 5:00am, a tractor trailer hauling excess pierogie ingredients was leaving Mrs. T's Shenandoah Plant when it pulled onto Route 924 from Herald Road.  As the truck pulled onto the highway, 17 giant tote-type containers holding approximately 1,000 pounds each of biodegradable food waste fell out of the trailer and onto Herald Road and Route 924.

The driver, not realizing what just happened, continued and eventually lost 2 more containers on Main Street in Gilberton near the off ramp of Route 924 where he finally pulled over.

The truck and driver were reported to be from a company from Danville that uses the excess pierogie ingredients to feed to farm animals.  The company was reported to be sending employees to take care of the cleanup.  Mrs. T's employees cleaned up most of the mess on Route 924 to allow traffic to continue.

Emergency personnel remained on scene while the mess was cleaned up.

Responding to the scene in Shenandoah were Shenandoah Police, Shenandoah Fire Police, and members from the Hook and Ladder as well as the Columbia Fire Company.  In Gilberton, Frackville Police responded along with members from Gilberton's Continental Fire Company.

UPDATE: In a statement from Mrs. T's Pierogies in regards to the incident.

As part of Mrs. T’s Pierogies’ sustainability efforts, our biodegradable food waste is recycled into animal feed.  On the morning of Friday, October 4 between 5-5:30 am, the recycling company’s truck picked up bins of Mrs. T’s biodegradable food waste and lost 18 bins at the corner of Herald Road and Rt. 924.  Two more bins were lost near the Gilberton exit off of Rt. 924.  The bins are out of the road and in the process of being cleaned up.  There are no reported injuries at this time.  Our number one priority is safety and we are thankful to everyone who was onsite including Shenandoah Police, Shenandoah Fire Police, Shenandoah Rescue Hook and Ladder Fire Company, Columbia Fire Company, Frackville Police and Continental Fire Company in Gilberton.

Schuylkill Haven Delivery Company to Add 65 Jobs

$
0
0
On Friday, Governor Tom Wolf announced that Evans Delivery Company (EDC), an over-the-road trucking company and broker, will expand its operations in Schuylkill Haven, creating 65 new jobs and maintaining 321 existing employees.

“EDC made a commitment to revitalize Schuylkill Haven almost two decades ago, and the company has been dedicated to those efforts ever since,” said Gov. Wolf. “This project further builds on those efforts and shows how a town can initiate change with a simple vision and a little teamwork, driving economic and social benefits directly into the community.”

As part of the community’s ongoing efforts to revitalize the local area, EDC will acquire and renovate a 9,046-square-foot office building and will demolish an existing surface car wash to create a corporate annex and 70 parking spaces. The project will consolidate back office jobs, currently performed out of state, nearer to the company’s 60,000-square-foot headquarters. The company is required to invest at least $2,482,658 in the project, and create at least 65 new, full-time jobs at the site.

“It’s an honor to help with the revitalization of Schuylkill Haven by renewing a historic building that was so much a part of the original growth of the borough,” said EDC Board Chairman Albert “Bert” Evans, Jr. “It’s also rewarding to see how five organizations: the Downtown Merchants, the Island Organization, Penn State Schuylkill, the Heritage River Group, and the Walk In Art Center all have contributed to the revitalization project. It would never have been possible without the help of our elected public servants Governor Tom Wolf, Senator Dave Argall, and Representative Mike Tobash. It was a team effort and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

“A community like Schuylkill Haven is lucky to have an entrepreneur like Bert Evans and Evans Delivery. Sometimes it takes just one person to be a catalyst for community and economic development to begin the transformation process,” said Sen. Argall. “Schuylkill Haven really is “the little town that could” and projects like this one are proof of a community’s success. I applaud Evans Delivery for relocating out of state jobs not only to Pennsylvania but Schuylkill Haven. I look forward to many years of growth by Evans Delivery.”

EDC received a funding proposal from the Department of Community and Economic Development for the project. The proposal includes a $250,000 Pennsylvania First grant, $65,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits to be distributed upon creation of the new jobs, and a $17,400 workforce development grant to help the company train workers. The company was also encouraged to apply for a $1 million loan through the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA). The project was coordinated by the Governor’s Action Team, an experienced group of economic development professionals who report directly to the Governor and work with businesses that are considering locating or expanding in Pennsylvania.

“As Chairman of the Schuylkill Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors, I am always pleased when we can help a local, home-grown company expand,” said SEDCO Chairman David Snyder. “The Evans Network of Companies not only provides a tremendous amount of employment opportunities to county residents, but is also committed to giving back and helping to make Schuylkill County a better place every day. We are also very grateful of the Governor’s assistance in helping Evans continue to grow.”

EDC is part of “The Evans Network of Companies (ENC),” and is the largest privately held intermodal drayage carrier, and 20th largest common motor carrier in the country. ENC includes 34 brands at more than 350 locations and a fleet of 7,050 trucks. EDC has been owned and operated by members of the Evans family since 1939.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Spartans Defeat Raiders Friday Night

Those who attended the North Schuylkill/Tamaqua game at Spartan Stadium didn't want to move from their seat Friday night.

Although the Spartans took home the victory Friday night, it wasn't until the final minutes of the game that they were able to breathe a little easier.

Throughout the game, it was the Tamaqua Raiders gun slinging passing offense and North Schuylkill's run game offense up against two tough defenses.

The game was within 3 points up until the final minutes of the fourth quarter when the Spartans turned 21-18 into 27-18.

The Spartans fought hard for their victory after Tamaqua was North Schuylkill's only loss during the regular season in 2018.

North Schuylkill moves on to face Blue Mountain in Orwigsburg next week and Tamaqua will visit Lehighton.
