Schuylkill County Obituaries for 09/25/19

-----------------------------------------------------

Eleanor A. Racis (nee Comisac) has left her 93 years behind at St Luke’s Hospital, Coaldale Campus on Tuesday evening, September 24, 2019.

Anyone who knew Ellie was aware of her deep devotion to and for her family, both near and far. Her favored means of showing that love was through the preparation and sharing of food. The small Racis house in Coaldale was often filled with laughter, storytelling, hunger-inducing aromas, family and friends. No one could leave her table without having eaten far more than intended, and then couldn’t leave the house without taking more food to go. Pirogi, halupki, blini, babka, chicken soup, cakes and pies and so much more. There can be no doubt she was welcomed into eternity by her late husband, Stanley (Sticky) Racis.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John & Teresa (nee Marcinkus) Comisac, and her siblings, John (Buddy) Comisac & Jean Miller.

Eleanor is survived by her 3 children, Stanley Racis, Jean Lobitz and Joseph Racis.

There will be a private service at Sky View Memorial Park where Eleanor will be buried next to her Sticky. The family would ask you to remember and emulate her devotion to family, her generosity and her wonderful sense of humor. And instead of flowers please consider donations on her behalf to St Luke’s Hospital-Coaldale Campus, c/o Development Office, 801 Ostrum Street, Bethlehem, PA 18015.

Online condolences may be made at www.zgfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are being handled by the Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 500 East Broad Street, Tamaqua.

Gov. Wolf, Lt. Gov. Fetterman Unveil Report on Statewide Recreational Marijuana Tour; Discuss Next Steps

$

Governor Tom Wolf and Lt. Governor John Fetterman today held a press conference to announce the final report from the Lt. Gov’s statewide recreational marijuana tour and proposed next steps as a result of input from thousands of Pennsylvanians who attended a listening session or submitted input via an online form.

“The Lt. Gov. made good on his promise to visit all 67 counties to hear from Pennsylvanians about whether or not they support the legalization of adult-use recreational marijuana in the state,” Gov. Wolf said. “And among the many who voiced their opinions, the majority supported legalization.”

In addition to the public and media, all local elected officials were invited to each tour stop. By a show of hands, a majority of attendees supported legalization in all but a handful of counties. Key takeaways from the tour are included in the report.

The report is comprised of two sections. The first section examines the volumes of correspondence received through an online form hosted on the governor’s website, remarks made, and comment cards received at tour stops, and all other comments received by the lieutenant governor’s office in various formats.

It includes a county-by-county breakdown of support and opposition, including the most common arguments received for and against legalization during the tour.
The second section highlights positive and negative results of legalization among individual states where recreational marijuana has been legalized.

Lt. Gov. Fetterman said he appreciates the comments from thousands of Pennsylvanians he met during the tour, and those who forwarded their comments through the online form and via other means.

“We’ve heard you, and this announcement today is our earnest effort to bring about the changes you’ve told us you want,” Fetterman said.

In addition to announcing the report, Gov. Wolf and Lt. Gov. Fetterman called for three actions:

1. Asking the legislature to get a bill to the governor’s desk that decriminalizes non-violent and small cannabis-related offenses.
2. Seeking a path to restorative justice through the expungement of past convictions of non-violent and small cannabis-related crimes.
3. Calling on the General Assembly to seriously debate and consider the legalization of adult-use, recreational marijuana.

“We now know the majority of Pennsylvanians are in favor of legalization, and that includes me,” Gov. Wolf said. “I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together, especially the criminal justice reforms I am proposing today, which will have an immediately positive influence on thousands of families across Pennsylvania.

“Thank you again to Lt. Gov. Fetterman for conducting this important research, and to all the Pennsylvanians who took the time to attend a tour stop, write a letter or make a phone call to make their opinion known.”

On Thursday, the Liberty Fire Company No. 4 of Schuylkill Haven announced that they have been awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) in the amount of $455,239.00 to replace their 1980 Mack CF pumper.

The federal grant awards were announced publicly today by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the agency which administers the program.

The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

The Liberty Fire Company No. 4 purchased the 1980 Mack CF pumper in 1994 after it served more than a decade with the FDNY in the Bronx. Since 1994, the Mack has served the Borough of Schuylkill Haven and its surrounding communities as a front-line engine and is one of the oldest fire engines still in-service within our county.

"The acquisition of this vehicle grant will allow us to purchase a brand-new apparatus that will provide our volunteer firefighters with the life-saving equipment necessary to safely and aggressively protect lives and property for years to come.", the fire company said in a press release.

"The Liberty Fire Company No. 4 would like to thank our community, as this opportunity would not have been made possible without your continued support."

Former Schuylkill County Priest Admits to Assaulting Minor

$

A former priest that once served in Schuylkill County has admitted to assaulting a minor.

According to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Allentown, Father Stephen J. Halabura, 87, who has been retired for 11 years, has been found unsuitable for ministry after an investigation of an incident that Father Halabura self-reported to the Diocese of Allentown.

In May 2019, Father Halabura admitted sexually abusing a minor in the early 1980s. After Father Halabura self-reported the incident, Bishop Alfred Schlert removed Father Halabura from ministry, and law enforcement was notified.

As the result of the Diocese’s investigation, conducted by an independent investigator, the allegation was determined to be credible. The Independent Review Board, a panel of experts that advises the Bishop on clergy abuse matters, recently recommended that Father Halabura was unsuitable for ministry. Bishop Schlert accepted the recommendation. Father Halabura remains barred from ministry.

Father Halabura’s name has been added to the list of credibly accused priests on the diocesan web page, https://sp.allentowndiocese.org/priests/.

The incident occurred at the former St. Anthony of Padua parish, Millmont, which was later closed and merged into St. John Baptist de la Salle, Shillington.

Father Halabura was ordained in May 1961. Since his retirement, he had been serving as a substitute priest when needed.

Halabura had served in Schuylkill County at the following locations in Schuylkill County

St. Canicus in Mahanoy City from 1961 to 1963
St. Stephen in Port Carbon from 1963 to 1964
St. Stanislaus in Minersville from 1984 to 1987

A Reading man has been charged with attempted homicide for a shooting in Pottsville over the weekend.
According to Chief Richard Wojciechowsky, on Saturday September 28, 2019 around 8:30pm, Pottsville Police were dispatched to the 400 block of East Arch St. for a report of a gunshot victim at that location.

As police were arriving, they were advised that the injured person was attempting to flee in a vehicle and a short time later Sgt. James Joos located a vehicle matching the description of this fleeing vehicle traveling south on Route 61.

A vehicle stop was initiated near Mauch Chunk Street where it was confirmed that the 45 year old male driver from Reading, Pa had been shot multiple times.

Emergency care was rendered by police and arriving Schuylkill EMS units prior to the male being transported to a medical facility for treatment of his injuries which were later reported by medical personnel to be non-life threatening.

Information obtained from the injured male along with two passengers in his vehicle led police to 423 East Arch Street which was subsequently identified as the location of the shooting.

During an immediate canvass of the area police were advised that the actors most likely fled from 423 E. Arch into 429 East Arch Street.

At 429 E. Arch Street police found Nicole Finken, 40, the registered owner of 423 East Arch St. along with her boyfriend, Jordan Sanchez, 25, of Reading hiding in the basement.

Information provided by witnesses had identified a male named “Jordan” as the shooter and Sanchez and Finken were both immediately taken into investigative detention for further questioning.

Investigators obtained multiple search warrants for both addresses as well as the vehicle the injured male had been operating.

During the search of 429 E. Arch Street police recovered spent 9mm shell casings and a Ruger P95 handgun hidden in the ceiling tiles of the basement where Sanchez and Finken were found, as well as a large quantity of synthetic marijuana.

As a result of the investigation Det. Joseph Welsh prepared a criminal complaint charging Jordan Sanchez with Attempted Homicide, Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, Possessing Instruments of a Crime Recklessly Endangering Another Person, and Persistent Disorderly Conduct.

He was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Christina Hale and then committed to the Schuylkill County Prison with no bail being set due to the Attempted Homicide charge.

Additionally, criminal complaints were also prepared by Captain John Morrow charging Sanchez and Finken with Felony Possession with Intent to Deliver A Controlled Substance and Criminal Conspiracy for the Synthetic Marijuana recovered during the search.

Both were arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Christina Hale on these charges with bail being set at $25,000 cash and Finken was also committed to the Schuylkill County Prison.

On Monday, Geisinger announced the appointment of Matthew Walsh to the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, effective Oct. 1.

Walsh, who joined Geisinger in 2017 as Chief Operating Officer for the clinical enterprise, joins Geisinger’s executive leadership team following more than two years of progressive leadership for Geisinger’s 1,300-plus physicians, 13 hospital campuses and more than 100 outpatient and ambulatory clinics. In his new role, Walsh will continue progress toward creating a seamless, user-friendly experience for everyone in the communities Geisinger serves.

“I can’t think of a more exciting time to be a part of Geisinger as we engage with our communities to build and develop programs that make choosing health a reality for everyone,” Walsh said. “In front of us stands an incredible opportunity to make health easier for members of our communities by unifying the touchpoints across their journeys to health with a simple, cohesive experience whether it’s in a physician’s office, walking into an urgent care facility, at the pharmacy or calling in to make an appointment.”

As Chief Operating Officer of the Clinical Enterprise, Walsh oversaw several key initiatives and clinical program developments to improve ambulatory, operating room, emergency department and inpatient access. Additionally, Walsh oversaw an overall operations performance improvement initiative that achieved performance improvement value of nearly $400 million over three years.

“During his time at Geisinger, Matt has proven that he is the clear choice to lead Geisinger’s efforts to make health easier for our communities by bringing together all aspects of our organization to better serve our friends and neighbors,” said Jaewon Ryu, MD, JD, Geisinger’s president and chief executive officer. “His diverse experience and community-first approach will have a direct, positive impact on the communities we serve by creating more seamless paths to health and well-being.”

Prior to joining Geisinger, Walsh, a University of Michigan Ross School of Business alum, held several leadership roles over nearly twenty years with the Henry Ford Health System. His most recent appointment was senior vice president and chief operating officer for Health Alliance Plan.

Walsh succeeds executive vice president Lynn Miller, who previously announced her intention to retire in spring 2020 following a 30-year career at Geisinger.
