Whitmoyer Wins Coalcracker 40 Sportsman Race

The Friday night it was the USS Achey Sportsman turn to headline the evening’s racing card and they did not disappoint.

It was a battle of the titans as Craig Whitmoyer and 2019 USS Achey Sportsman champion Doug Hendricks fought side by side for over 15 laps with Whitmoyer winning the war to take home the $1800 first place check.

Pole sitter Kenny Eckert in his first race back after suffering a broken back earlier this season at the Grandview Speedway jumped out to the lead at the drop of the green. Eckert would continue to lead over Nate Brinker, Whitmoyer, Brad Brightbill and modified driver Jared Umbenhauer as the first caution of the race was put on lap nine as 18th place starter Hendricks was rocketing his way through the field.

It’s Eckert still leading when the race resumes with Whitmoyer now up to the second spot and starting to apply pressure to the leader. Whitmoyer made the pressure payoff two laps later as he went by Eckert to take away the top spot. As Whitmoyer was starting to extend his lead, Hendricks was on move making a beeline to the front taking over the second spot on lap 14. A lap 15 caution would slow the pace putting Hendricks right on the bumper of the leader Whitmoyer.

This is where a very good race turned into a great race as the two veterans Whitmoyer and Hendricks would engage in a spectacular battle for the top spot that would rage on for the next 15 to 20 laps. Side by side, lap after lap Whitmoyer and Hendricks would race for the lead. Whiitmoyer holding steady in the middle groove as Hendricks tried to work the low line around the speedway. Hendricks could pull even with Whitmoyer going into the turns but just couldn’t get enough grip down low to complete the pass. At one-point Hendricks went by for the lead but unfortunately for Hendricks the yellow would be displayed before the lap was scored handing the lead back to Whitmoyer.

On the restart the battle would resume with Whitmoyer once again staying out front as Hendricks tried every trick in his repertoire to get by. Finally, with the two leaders taking the five to signal, Whitmoyer started to put a little distance between himself and Hendricks.

Whitmoyer would go on to take the checkered flag and the $1800 first-place prize after an amazingly clean and hard-fought batter over Hendricks. Ray Woodall Jr would finish third with Eckert holding on for fourth and Michael Burrows finishing fifth.

The Eash’s Towing & Recovery Street Stocks made their return to action Friday night as part of Coalcracker weekend with Jason Geeseman returning to victory lane. Kody Sites would grab the lead from his fourth starting spot on lap one. Fifth place starting Geeseman would takeover the second spot on lap five and start putting the pressure on Sites for the lead. Sites and Geeseman would race door to door over the next ten laps with Sites remaining in front. A lap 15 caution would change the complexation of the race as Geeseman would get by Sites on the restart for the lead and start to open up an advantage. As the checkered flag flew, it was Geeseman taking the win over Sites with Jeff Haag, Eric Tripp and Scott Thunburg rounding out the top five. With his second-place finish, Sites remains the points leader with the final race of the season coming up on Sunday September 1st.

Alex Ditzler would take the lead from his outside row one starting spot in the Savage 61 Road Runner feature event. Seventh place starter Shawn Mulhall is on the move early and on lap two gets by Ditzler to take over the top spot. Once in front it was all Mulhall as he would go on to win the main event followed by Jim Kost, Chris Holland, Mike Reichert and Matt Ney. With one race remaining, Chris Holland remains the points leader.

In the Pizza Shop of Etters, Central PA Legend feature event it was Alex Schmiedel taking the win holding off the challenges of Chandler Pagnotta who returned from an early race incident to finish and Jeremy Ott. The three cars of Schmiedel, Pagnotta and Ott ran nose to tail the last ten laps of the main event putting on an exciting show for the fans.

The 50-lap Enduro race was won by Scott Riggleman who has swept the last nine Enduro races at the Big Diamond Speedway.

Walmart to Discontinue Sales of Certain Guns, Ammunition After Deadly Shootings

$

Walmart announced Tuesday that they will discontinue the sales of certain guns after two deadly shootings that occurred in their stores.

In a press release, CEO Doug McMillon announced that:
  • After selling through current inventory commitments, they will discontinue sales of short-barrel rifle ammunition such as the .223 caliber and 5.56 caliber that, while commonly used in some hunting rifles, can also be used in large capacity clips on military-style weapons
  • They will sell through and discontinue handgun ammunition
  • They will discontinue handgun sales in Alaska, marking their complete exit from handguns
"We know these decisions will inconvenience some of our customers, and we hope they will understand. As a company, we experienced two horrific events in one week, and we will never be the same. Our remaining assortment will be even more focused on the needs of hunting and sport shooting enthusiasts. It will include long barrel deer rifles and shotguns, much of the ammunition they require, as well as hunting and sporting accessories and apparel. We believe these actions will reduce our market share of ammunition from around 20% to a range of approximately 6 to 9%. We believe it will likely drift toward the lower end of that range, over time, given the combination of these changes." McMillon wrote.

The changes come after two shootings in the southern United States.

The first shooting occurred in Southaven, Mississippi when two Walmart associates were killed by another associate.

The second shooting occurred in El Paso, Texas when a gunman used an assault-style rifle and launched a hate filled attack in a Walmart Store, shooting 48 and killing 22.

Von Dohren Wins $17,000 Paycheck in Thrilling Jack Rich, Inc Coalcracker 72

$
0
0
With the richest payday ever offered at the Big Diamond Speedway to the winner of the Jack Rich, Inc. “Coalcracker 72”, you just knew the racing would be top notch and at night’s end the capacity crowd would not be disappointed as Craig Von Dohren fought off the charges of Brett Kressley and Duane Howard to take home the huge win.

“That was a helluva race,” said an excited Von Dohren as he exited his car in victory lane. “I didn’t’ know where to go and I didn’t know what to. When you take the lead early like that it makes it hard because the track changes. I ran the bottom early and saw (Alex) Yankowski was up to second during the yellow and I knew he drew bad so I figured the top was good so I moved out there and then the track started to move to far out so I moved down again and then it’s just a matter of moving around to find the right groove. Brett (Kressley) got me there when I got stuck behind a lapped car but once we were able to clear the lapped car I was able to get my momentum going again on the bottom and work my way back by him to get back in front. “

Kevin Beach and Nick Rochinski would lead the field to green in the richest paying Coalcracker race ever with Beach getting the jump to lead the way. The first caution of the night would come out on lap one when outside pole-sitter Rochinski stopped coming out of turn four ending his hope of a huge payday. Back to green flag racing and Beach remains the leader with fourth place starting Craig Von Dohren making moves to the front. Von Dohren would wrestle second away on lap four and one lap later would drive underneath Beach to take over the top spot.

Once in front, Von Dohren would start to pull away as the action behind him was starting to heat between Danny Bouc, Duane Howard, Ryan Godown, Jeff Strunk and Richie Pratt Jr all battling hard to catch the leader Von Dohren. Lap 13 saw another player enter the fray as modified rookie Alex Yankowski was making his towards the front from his twelfth starting spot. Yankowski was flying on the outside and by lap 19 was the new second place runner and starting to rundown the leader Von Dohren.

Just as Yankowski was starting to pressure Von Dohren for the lead, the caution would come out for a slowing Cale Ross. Von Dohren would once again lead the way on the restart as Brett Kressley was starting to make his presence felt as he entered the top five. Billy Pauch Jr would bring out the yellow on lap 25 with a right rear flat with Von Dohren leading over Yankowski, Godown, Kressley & Howard.

Back to racing and second place running Yankowski gets out of shape going through turns one and two allowing multiple cars to go by dropping him out of the top five. Von Dohren continues to lead the pack with great racing behind him as Godown, Kressley, Howard and Timmy Buckwalter are all going at it within the top five. Consecutive yellows on laps 35 and 37 would stop the race for the mandatory fuel stop with the top five consisting of Von Dohren, Howard, Kressley, Godown and Strunk.

When the field returned to racing it was once again Von Dohren to the point as seventeenth place starter Mike Gular entered the top five looking to throw his hat into the mix. The last yellow of the race would be displayed on lap 40 when the car of Buckwalter slowed to a stop.

The remaining 32 laps would run caution free as the crowd witnessed possibly the best racing ever during the running of the Coalcracker race and maybe ever at the speedway as the track’s two leading feature winners of all-time Von Dohren and Howard along with the young veteran Kressley swapping spots amongst themselves in the one the most cleanest hard-fought battle this writer has ever saw.

Von Dohren running the inside while the young Kressley was giving it everything he had up on the cushion trying to make the pass. Kressley could pull even with Von Dohren through the turns but just couldn’t get the momentum off the corners to complete the pass. Howard lurked right the behind the two leaders in third just waiting to capitalize on a mistake by either of the top two. Howard would get by Kressley for second only to have Kressley power back around a lap later to get back to the runner-up spot.

Von Dohren kept plugging away in the lead as Kressley again went back to the extreme outside with lapped cars now starting to enter the picture. Lap 61 saw Kressley pin Von Dohren down low behind a lapped car as he cruised by on the outside to take over the top spot. However, the veteran Von Dohren was not rattled. One lap later as they cleared the lapped cars Von Dohren would start to work his way back under Kressley to regain the lead.

Lap 62 saw Von Dohren make the low line stick as he was back in front. With ten laps to go it was the same three still going at it hard for the win with Gular a distant fourth. Von Dohren, Kressley and Howard were running under a blanket as the laps wound down with Kressley still trying hard up on the wall with Howard working the bottom both trying to work by the leader Von Dohren. Howard would work his way past Kressley for second and started to work his way by Von Dohren but just couldn’t find that extra gear to do so. The final five laps saw the three leaders race clean and hard as they started to come up on some more lapped cars. Von Dohren was able to hold off the charges of Howard and Kressley to go on and win his fourth career Coalcracker race and take home the big prize of $17,000. Kressley would sneak by Howard at the line for second with Gular and Frank Cozze the top five. Sixth through tenth would be Strunk, Godown, Pratt, Pauch Jr and Rick Laubach.

“I’m kind of speechless right now”, cited Von Dohren. This race was good money and I’m thankful everything stayed together tonight, and I was able to drive my race. We’ve struggled here the past couple of weeks and changed a few things and it all worked out for us. There are a lot of people who help me and my wife to make this all work, Dave Dissinger for providing me these cars along with Bob Greene of Pioneer Pole Buildings, Jason Bashore, Nick Gatto, Doug Rose and all the people that support me. This is great!”

Also on the racing card for the Sunday night was the final event of the year for the Savage 61 Road Runners and at the end of the 20-lap main event it was the 2019 points champion Chris Holland punctuating his title by winning the feature after taking the lead away from Matt Ney on lap 11.

The Eash’s Towing & Recovery Streets Stocks capped off their season on Coalcracker Sunday with Jason Geesaman once again in victory lane pulling off the weekend sweep. Jeff Haag took the lead lap one from his fourth starting with the sixth place starting Geesaman taking over the top spot on lap three and

checking out on the field to take the win over Ryan Smith and Haag. Kody Sites held off a late season charge from Haag to win the 2019 points title.

Geoffrey Sutton was the winner of the 20-lao Xcel 600 Modified feature over Matt Warner, Sam Scicchitano, Jeff Sechrist and Brianna James.
