Friday Night Results from Big Diamond Speedway - 08/09/2019

$

The “Ringoes Rocket” Ryan Godown had enough of being fast every Friday night and not being able to get to the front quick enough to take the win. Friday night Godown was on a mission, the Ringoes, NJ driver went out and promptly won his heat and then went on to dominate the nights 25-lap main event for his second win of the season.

The “Hook” Craig Whitmoyer would lead the Insigner Performance Modifieds to the green flag and take command at the start. Godown is on the move early after starting eleventh moving into fourth as the field completed lap six.

The first stoppage of the race would happen on lap seven when the red flag was displayed after a frightening crash on the front stretch. Loudon Reimert would slow coming out of turn four with a flat tire causing the field behind him to scatter and wreck. The cars of Tim Apgar, Kevin Albert (making his return to the Big Diamond field), Scott Albert and Ryan Krachun all stopped and spread out in front of the starters stand as Bobby Gunther-Walsh torpedoed into the stopped cars. Thankfully all drivers were ok, Gunther-Walsh did go to the ambulance and to the hospital but as learned on Saturday suffered only minor injuries. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the modifieds of Scott Albert, Krachun and Gunther-Walsh whose cars all suffered major damage.

After the long red flag period, racing finally resumes as Whitmoyer continues to lead the way with Godown now up to second. Lap ten, it’s Godown to the point as he sails by Whitmoyer to take command of the race with Stangle, Billy Pauch Jr putting the pressure on Whitmoyer for second. Lap 12 finds Pauch Jr by Whitmoyer taking over the runnerup spot just as the caution flag waved to regroup the field.

Only the restart it was Godown rocketing away to the lead starting to open an advantage over the second place running Pauch Jr. While Godown was setting sail on the field, all eyes were now on the battle for second as Craig Von Dohren was now up to third and pressuring Pauch Jr for the runner-up spot. The two former speedway champions went at it hard with Von Dohren running the outside as Pauch Jr would stay down low. Von Dohren seemed to have the edge running high but Pauch Jr would be able to hold the advantage as they crossed the line. Finally, on the last lap, Von Dohren made it work as he was able to get by Pauch Jr and finish second. Duane Howard and Whitmoyer would complete the top five.

The annual “Fayash Memorial” was on tap Friday night for the USS Achey Sportsman paying a nice $1750 to the winner. With the extra money available, Brad Brightbill made the tow to Big Diamond hoping to take home the extra cash. At night’s end it was Brightbill standing in victory lane as he held off points leader Doug Hendricks to take the big win.

Two-time winner this season Brandon Edgar would grab the lead from his outside pole starting position and open a big lead on the field. Brightbill starting ninth was moving through the field quickly and was up to fifth after the completion of lap one. Brightbill would move into second on lap five and start to track down the leader Edgar who had built up a commanding lead at this point. With a stretch of green flag racing, Edgar had started to encounter lapped traffic allowing Brightbill quickly gobble up the almost half a track advantage Edgar had built up. Lap fourteen would find Brightbill right on the leader’s bumper and quickly moving by to assume the lead as the caution would come out.

Back to racing and Brightbill takes command and starts to pull away. Multi-time winner Doug Hendricks would be the show now after early race struggles. Hendricks found what he was looking for in his No. 80 and was starting to make a beeline towards the front putting on a show for the fans as rockets into the top five on lap 25. With two laps to go, Hendricks is now up to second but runs out of time to catch Brightbill. Brightbill goes on to take the win with Hendricks, Edgar, Wayne Witmer and Matt Ellery rounding out the top five.

Kody Sites once again was dominate in the Eash’s Towing & Recovery street stock division winning the 20-lap feature event. Sites would take the lead from early race leader Elvin Brennan on lap six and was never challenged as went on to take the win. A fantastic battle behind Sites was raging on for second as Jason Geesemen, Jeff Haag and Chris Derr were going at it fast and furious with Derr winning the battle to finish second. Haag, Geeseman and Brennan completed the top five.

In the Savage 61 Road Runner division it was Chris Holland taking the win after early leader Shawn Mulhall spun out on lap 14. Holland would go to take the victory with Kris Ney, Terry Kramer, Jim Kost and Mulhall the top five.

Betty Louise Dietz, 72, passed away peacefully in her sleep the morning of Saturday, Aug. 10, at her home in Deer Lake. She was discovered by her husband Doyle and their Labrador retrievers Dingus and Doc when they went to wake her for lunch. Betty and Doyle celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, January 25, and in February treated themselves to a vacation in Punta Cana. They enjoyed taking occasional breaks from fishing and hunting and watching baseball and football by vacationing in the Caribbean, and previously had visited Bermuda and The Bahamas. Born in Danville, May 16, 1947, Betty was the daughter of the late Paul and Dorothy (Ashenfelter) Seidel and is survived by her sister Beverly Laubach of Danville. A 1965 graduate of Danville Area High School and a 1969 graduate of the then Bloomsburg State College, Betty began a 34½ year teaching career at Panther Valley in the middle school as a Language Arts instructor, eventually becoming the department head, advisor to the school newspaper and served on the negotiating team. She was a member of the National Education Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association and Panther Valley Education Association, but as a conservative member of the Republican Party often disagreed with the liberal agenda of those organizations. At an early age Betty developed an appreciation for music, learning to play the piano and as a pre-teen she became a lifelong fan of Jerry Lee Lewis, and was a member of the DHS chorus and several service clubs. She was a member of the Rainbow Girls at Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg. Betty and Doyle began what became a 56-year partnership when they began dating during his senior year in high school. Their lifelong mutual interests included, but were not limited to, attending New York Football Giants and New York Yankees games, travel, hunting, fishing, films, dogs, cooking and restaurants, reading and attending concerts – their favorites being the Allman Brothers Band, who they saw more than 50 times at the Beacon Theater alone, and Bob Dylan and his Band. Betty was especially proud of her Scotch-Irish ancestry and through research discovered she is a member of the Gunn Clan – the same as the McGregors of the legendary Rob Roy. She and her sister enjoyed a tour of Ireland in 2015, the highlight for her being able to sit in Bono’s church seat that he uses Christmas Eve. Betty enjoyed all types of fishing, especially trips to the Chesapeake Bay and Lake Ontario – where she caught her largest king salmon of 21 pounds this spring – and in two days caught an 8-fish limit of walleye to bring home this summer from Quebec. It became a running joke, but fact, that she caught bigger fish than her husband, including a trophy char on a trip to Alaska and smallmouth bass in the St. Lawrence and Susquehanna rivers. A member of Salem United Methodist Church, Orwigsburg, for many years Betty served on its board. For more than 15 years she was treasurer of Blue Ridge Rifles Muzzleloader Club, Summit Station. Growing up on her father’s turkey farm in Washingtonville, Betty never understood the fascination that bordered on obsession hunters had – especially her husband -- with pursuing spring gobblers, until shooting a 23-pound bird in Missouri. After taking several birds in Pennsylvania, her proudest moment came two years ago when she called in and took a bird in Schuylkill County with a 12-inch beard. Because of her writing skills and love and knowledge of the outdoors, Betty joined the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association and was a contributor to the Pottsville Republican Herald since 2010. She also was a member of Friedensburg Fish and Game, National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, National Rifle Association, National Wild Turkey Federation, Pennsylvania Deer Association, Pennsylvania Federation of Black Powder Shooters, Schuylkill County Sportsmen’s Association and Schuylkill Valley Corvette Club. In addition to her husband and sister, Betty is survived by brothers-in-law Ronald Dietz, Victorville, California; James Dietz, New Columbia; and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and great-nephews. Hamilton-Breiner Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 116 S. Liberty St., Orwigsburg, is in charge of arrangements. A celebration of life is Saturday, Aug. 31, beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service conducted Rev. Steward Warner beginning at 11 a.m., and those attending are invited to wear fishing clothes if they wish. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 133 South Liberty St., Orwigsburg PA 17961, or the American Diabetes Association, Box 15829, Arlington VA 22215.

Tremont Mayor Submits Resignation to Borough Council

On the 1-Year anniversary of historic flooding in the borough, Tremont Mayor Ricky A. Nye Jr. submitted his resignation Wednesday evening at the borough's council meeting.

Nye, who was sworn in as Mayor of Tremont in 2017, read the following submitted it to council during the meeting.

"We, as elected officials of the borough of Tremont, have each taken on the challenge as we took our position and the oath of office the responsibility to become deeply involved in our common interest in seeing our community succeed and flourish.  As my mission statement and campaign was for a Safe and Strong Community!  Together as Mayor and Council, we have been hurled many issues with the change in parking meters, ATV issues, drug activities, speeding and traffic control issues, quality of life and code enforcement concerns, attempting the crime watch program, and the major flooding we all have been devastated with.  I believe we reach the lives of a lot of Borough residents in one form or another.  During our time together, we have won friends, made enemies, riled the media, and most importantly, persevered in our mutual mission of progress and improvement.  The gratification I personally feel when we assist someone who lacks the ability to help themselves.  To me, this is why we are all here.

With this in mind, it becomes unsettling when conflict erupts internally.  Naturally, disagreements within the local, state, and federal government are expected.  Council is deliberative body and should be discussing contrasting points of view.  However, the hostility that has still been present over my tenure, it has compromised the civility and objectivity we pride ourselves in exercising.  Rather than helpful suggestions, we have been subject to brutal and unilateral demands both of ourselves and of employees.  The art of compromise (the mark of good government) has been abandoned, and in its place a hostile environment of mistrust and strife has erupted.  In such a scenario, we who still strive to govern through courtesy, deliberation, and respect to our colleagues and employees feel increasingly irrelevant and pushed away from the table.  Discourse between calm and conscientious members of our administration is no longer present.  Sensibility and rational decisions have given way to an unquenchable drive for absolute authority and concentrated micromanagement done at the peril of employees and the stability of our government at large.  With the increase number of complaints lodged against the department and the time involved and lengthy investigations have made a burden to my mind and lately the past flooding has all taken weight onto me and giving me some health concerns.  I cannot continue to feel this way to I hope everyone can respect my decision to resign.

It is for these reasons that I feel I am no longer able to effectively exercise the duties of Mayor.  By continued sidelining and marginalization, my policies and legitimacy as Mayor has lost momentum.  The budget is not sufficient to effectively run a professional police department and with the infrastructure issues which I am forever grateful locally we have been trying to work on but without the state and federal aid and the folks above us aiding in our needs of our destruction the countless hours, days, and weeks we all have fought is meaningless.  So, as a citizen if we don't get them fixed, we will not have a community.  Our homes values have gone down and no one is helping us, they all call and stop and show up but don't help us prevail and my apologies to the residents of this community.  I have work years as a medical professional and I want to keep my name as a medical professional of value so I need to give up this cumulative stress and hostile environment.  Even the simple act of doing my payroll, and managing my employees has undermined the professional relationship I had previously enjoyed with Council in the past two years.  I have spent hours on hours into working with this department and gaining the public trust in our department, defending the men in uniform, and with all the recent personnel matters, and the community members with all hours of the night and day with snarling remarks I feel my sponge for advocating is full and will not soak up any more water.  I will see my kids' graduate school, have grand kids, and spend time with my family.  Therefore, I submit my resignation to Tremont Borough Council to be effective immediately with the receipt of this document.  I humbly ask that this letter be accepted as soon as possible.  All Borough-owned materials and keys will be immediately turned over to the Borough Secretary.

As per 1030 of the Pennsylvania Borough Code, Council President Robert Donmoyer will carry out my duties until a successor can be named by Council or a Vacancy Board in accordance with 901.  All relevant documents, scheduled meetings, weddings, and other appearances will be turned over to him upon my departure.

On a personal note, my time with the Borough of Tremont has been the best experience of my life, and my decision to leave this position is without regret.  I have been defined as a person by my experiences as a Paramedic and being an advocate for the people of this Borough, and I hope that my involvement and the assets we brought as a team to the table have benefited those who I was elected to serve.  It is with a heavy heart that I submit this letter, but have immensely enjoyed getting to know all of you and feel privileged in calling you friends and colleagues for the betterment of the community that we all love.

Best regards,
Rick A. Ney Jr., Mayor
